I don't recall whose idea it was at first (some wonderfully organized youtube crafter I came across once), but at the end of the crafting day I cut my bigger scraps into sizes A4, A5, A6 or 5x5", depending what the scrap allows me to. Then I have them standing together on the shelf in the order of size and colour, ready to be used as card backgrounds or journalling cards.
And the rest (tiny bits that left) I throw into the basket, and when it's full I make myself kind of "scraps extravaganza" ;) punching shapes and cutting flowers, while chatting over the phone with friends :) or making patchwork patterns.
Recently my favourite style of using these smaller scraps is creating backrounds from hexagons cut out from different patterned papers, kind of paper quilting :)
So mine are like an army of soldiers ready for the battle, with some laggards hiding in the basket ;)
My grandkids love "crafting"!! So I cut my scraps up the other day and put them in a medium storage bin. That way it's easy for the kids to see what they have!!!
I'm drowning in strips so I've started using them to make contrast borders/surrounds for my matts and layers. You just need to mitre the corners and they look as good as using a whole piece of card. Generally, I put my strips and leftovers back in with the cardstock packs,so I can go straight to the colour I want and then they are easy to find for small die cuts or sentiments sentiment layer borders and tags.
I’ve only been making cards for a year!! Yes it’s fun! I’m 75 and make them for Our Senior Facility. I don’t and can’t afford “ Dies”, Although I have a lot of scraps and strips. Your “ Rainbow” strips is gorgeous!! I will try that but I’m not sure to use on top!! Thank you for sharing they are all just beautiful!
I keep my scraps in plastic sleeves with the same color cardstock. I use from the scrap sleeve before I use a full sheet. That helps keep the scraps down.
I do the same but mine land in my top drawer first for easy clean up and get sorted when the drawer gets full
@@justinehovey I have a small tote that fits on a shelf below my table. I toss the scraps into that little tote, then later sort into the matching sleeve.
I do the same. It helps tremendously!
I’m a bit worried that if I stick my scraps in with my full size papers that the heft of the scraps will warp my full sized ones. I’ve found a long, though not very tall, color-coded “wallet” to make do for now, but I’m eyeing a larger (letter sized?) version with about 3 or 4 multiples of “rainbow” tabs. Sadly, the thing comes from China, and I’ve not had the best of luck ordering from them. Does anyone else have ideas for scrap storage?
@Titanic for sure 😔...I can’t bring myself to throw them away, then I’m too lazy to get them out to use. But I’m getting ready to start my own RUclips channel, so I have been organizing, and like @VickyReuter, I am getting mine separated into their proper color families. It’s a process, cuz I’ve been making cards for over 25 years and probably have scraps that are 10-15 years old 😳. But I digress. Thanks Justine for the inspiration!! I’m making a 6 month New Years resolution, to use my scraps!! Will check out Ingrid next. Thanks, again, you’re amazing 💗💗💗
Those paperback adhesives must be a dream in using up these strips! They can be such a pain to glue on so I can imagine how much faster it must be to have them
I have a 6 drawer unit that I keep my scraps in....once a year, I go thru and get rid of the ones that I like the least.
Once in a while, I have cut the the scraps into all one size; put them into a ziplock; and dropped them in the Goodwill bin.
I save the tiniest scrapes. They are in ziplock bags, labeled with the name of the color, stored with the full size sheets of that color. I use every little bit!
Beautiful cards. I could almost fill the trunk of my car! 🤣
Titanic, but going to use them up now!! Thank you!
My scrap hoard is more like the Titanic. I cut my backgrounds to 1/4 inch smaller than my card base, add my scraps then run them through my die cut machine without a die. Firmly affixes the strips to the dry adhesive. A laminator with a “no heat” option works well too.
I think I like the rainbow look
One idea for adding a piece of card stock to help strengthen the die cuts is to use your “ugly” paper you wouldn’t use anyway. 😉
Thank you for this awesome tip!
A couple months ago during quarantine I separated all my color cardstock scraps. I placed each color family in big plastic bags. Since then, oh my, how convenient that has made my card making. No more long searches. Now pattern paper I have all in one bag.
I love this look! This is something I can do because I have and use cardstock. This is one of my favorites!
I have a ton of scraps! Totes and totes full!
I save my scraps and often make herringbone backgrounds out of them. 🙂 Sometimes I emboss them as well.
In each batch of scraps I handle each scrap piece in a couple of ways. First if the scrap is big enough, I cut out as much as I can to use for a card base/backer. Then I move to manual punches to cut typically used shapes such as squares, hearts, and circles, tags. etc. I use the cardstock/papers that have had pieces cut or punched out and maneuver around to get as much of the paper used as possible. Yes, I use the small punches too so that there are only teeny, tiny, unusable pieces left when I am done. The whale tail and flat Stampin up type punches are the easiest type to use. When I am done I place them in containers by shape. You could sort by color if you prefer. (Cheap alert: Gerber baby food 2nd foods come in a small plastic container with a snug lid. I had a lady that cleaned and saved the containers and lids for me so I got a TON of free containers for storing small pieces! You can the store those in a decorative box to keep the containers corralled ).
This is a way to manage the scrap pile and keep your hands busy if you like to do mindless kinds of things while watching tv.
Thanks Justine, I love your colorful scrap cards. My fav has to be the Birthday background. I am a scrapaholic - nothing gets thrown away. I have several plastic sets of A4 drawers - each color coded and they are my go-to when cardmaking.
I use an 8 1/2 x11 accordion file holder from staples to hold scraps, sorted by color. I love your ideas. Thank you for the inspiration!
Nothing goes to waste. I use a lot of scraps for sentiments and layering them. I find fun strips used g your technique with my patterned leftovers.
Anyone?? ... Bueller? .... LOL!!! These are great ideas! Between your video and Ingrid's video - I have a TON of ideas to start using up my scraps. Thank you!
I have kept scraps, recycled scraps, purged scraps, all of it! I keep minimal scraps in plastic pouches and store them with the same color card stock. I use scraps before cutting whole sheets. If it is smaller than a sentiment strip, it goes in the recycle bin!
I love these cards so much. Thanks for sharing this process. Nothing quite so cheerful as a rainbow 🌈 😁
Love all your cards Justine. This series is so vibrant & lovely. Like so many others here, I can't bear to throw scraps away. Lol
I have a shallow wooden tray in a desk drawer for my scraps. It’s easier to grab than getting a new sheet of card/ paper and I make a point once a month to go and use some up. I love to sit and crank out die cuts too! I got some really cool leaves out of watercolour backgrounds and mono prints😊
I love rainbows and rainbow colours, so I definitely approve of these ideas lol
I like doing this with scraps and your cards are lovely! Thank you for sharing great inspiration with us and ideas.😊
I may have more scraps than cardstock at this point. Did not throw out the scraps for 20+ years and now I’m focused on managing my scraps as opposed to the scraps managing me. Right now ( literally) I am using Washi tape to decorate bookmarks that I’m creating to donate to local libraries. I use linear embossing folders to impress a pattern into my 6.25 x 2.25 card stock, use the embossing to set the ‘line’ for Washi tape or paint or markers, then mount the artwork onto a 7” x 3” base. Works as a bookmark or as artwork on a 5” x 7” card. If I could figure out how to upload photos to yt I would show & tell.
Another tip for getting rid of the Hershey Kisses peak on Nuvo drops: when you have applied all the drops, lift the card, taking care to keep it horizontal (parallel to your work surface) and tap it sharply underneath a couple of times. I usually flick my index finger against my thumb. This makes the peak flatten but still keeps the drop rounded.
Still keeping the card horizontal, put it back on your work surface to dry.
That doesn't work for me. I never put the bottle in my armpit but I will now! 😉
Barbara Burgess Pardon? What armpits?
I keep my scraps in hanging files in a file bin organized by colour. I prefer the hanging files over plastic sleeves because it is easier to throw them in or pull them out. I probably wouldn't put them away if I had to open a plastic sleeve organizer thingummy. But also because of my consulting work I tend to have a bunch of portable file bins as I use them for projects in order to be able to pack up related files and go off to meetings. Easy to re-purpose to holding craft scraps and I have another one that holds images I have cut out for collaging.
Shred shred shred😲🤷♀️👍
Super video Justine! I love the eyes going back & forth waiting for an answer... My scrap paper storage is a 2" H x 6"W x 10" L plastic tub that is about 1/2 full in H, & also in it sits a small square box 3" x 4" & the littler pieces are all divided into colours with a larger piece separating each. I just used some black & white strip scraps to make a diagonal background today before I saw your video. Now I'm going to make some rainbow ones.
Since I don't have space for my Gemini to be out all the time, when I am using it, I make my cuts and then I use it to cut up, usually using the dies I just had out, to cut more pieces for the future out of my scraps, such as flowers, snowflakes when I have white or white/silver glitter paper scraps. Some of those papers are expensive so they need to be used up. I also quilt and I do this same thing with my fabric. I make my own precuts of fabrics in specific sizes that I use frequently when quilting. This means when I want to start a new quilt project, I am ready to go. With paper though I don't have a big stock, but for right now I know if I need to make a quick card I already have flowers cut out and ready to glue. I do like the fabric strips as it is like quilting. Thank you.
Soooo … NEXT Question!! How do you store your spare die cuts?!? I’ve begun to keep templates of cards I make, plus spare “bits” (paper, brads, INSTRUCTIONS, die cuts, etc.) together in cd or dvd boxes. But I’m wondering if I’ll need a whole bookcase in a year to store them!!
Great ideas, I keep scraps in the file folders that are pleated....holds more🤪 I store colors together for ease in finding. I do think they grow on their own in between card making days!!!
I agree with you. They multiply like little rabbits when you're not looking. 😀😀
This is one of my all time favorite videos. Those cards are just so Happy! Thanks, Justine.
I was saying “yes, I do that” while the crickets 🦗 were drowning me out! I put my scraps in zip lock bags and have my card stock in hanging files in a small 2-drawer filing cabinet and I put the zip lock bags in front of the color in the same hanging file! Works for me and is inexpensive. Love your videos! 🇨🇦
wow that is impressive. I have a bin that is christmas scraps and everything else gets thrown in the other bin. I try to be organized but it never works lol
I'm somewhere in between. I do have protectors and keep the scraps in the front and full pieces in the back but they first go in a drawer and when the drawer is full, they get sorted
Same here pikeandike! I literally said “That’s me” out loud. 😂 I keep my cardstock in job ticket holders. As I cut down paper, all of the scraps go back into the pocket. This has saved me! Before I started doing this, I had colored 12x12 paper storage bins. I put scraps in the bins by color family. Even then I suppose I was a bit neurotic. 🤪
Oh, Girl … L O V E the idea of hanging files. But doesn’t the paper droop down and get curved over time?
@@pineapplepapercrafts me too
My scraps are usually patterned paper rather than colored card, but for those I tend to use them up by diecutting with them. For patterned paper scraps they are more difficult to use up, I always dig in my folders to see if I can though rather than use new things and add to the pile.
i do this "make some backgrounds out of all those scraps in that bucket" thing regularly, so my collection is more like a rowboat than the Titanic.
I love that! Hahahaha! You r fun.
My scraps are in file folders two for each color. One for prints and one for solids. I do use them for strip cards and hexagons!!
I have a lot of scraps, I keep them separated by color in sleeves in a drawer and white has a drawer all its own. I also have a drawer for glitter scraps. I need to give this a try, great cards.
Some great ideas to use up my scraps. I keep 81/2 x11 clear envelopes of each color scraps and go to it first, also have a small drawer of colored strips that I use to make card fronts. Thanks Justine💖
Thank you for the tip with Nuvo drops, I am definitely going to do that.
If it’s big enough to make a card base it goes in a bin at the top of my 81/2x11 Cardstock. Thin paper strips go in a lunch bag on a shelf. Tina paper scraps go in another lunch bag to make handmade paper and the rest go in an accordion folder that hasn’t closed in 10 years. In fact it has exploded and is now on the floor under my table. It is sorted by color and I do use it all the time but not as much as I put in. I am in the process of looking for maybe a file cabinet or file folder bin that would work. Great videos from u both
I primarily make cards do I save all sizes and organize by color in clear pockets. Stored in a sturdy file basket so they are easy to flip through. I need to add tabs though.
I have a shoe box size stack of strips,( that one inch that comes off the 8.5×11) and I have a Rubbermaid drawer stacker color coordinated for larger solid color scraps and another bin for designer paper scraps.
I love this idea and I see it often. I would love to see the beginning process. Like “here is my stash, let’s show you how to do this without full page strips”. How do you use up scraps that are smaller that a full page? Your cards are beautiful and I’m loving your content!!!! ❤️
I keep my paper scraps in large 12" x 12" heavy plastic "baggies". I have just recently started to collect my strips in a round plastic container. I think I have lost of ideas between you and Ingrid to start using them. Thank you for the great ideas!
I have a little drawer cabinet that has different colored drawers (plastic) I received as a gift that houses a "few" of my many paper scraps...a small mountain that still won't fit in little baskets besides and I have started to use them up creating backgrounds like I have seen you do. Thanks for the inspiration !
Thanks Justine. 😊
love those rainbow cards. My scraps are not that pretty organized. I would say they are about as large as a shoe box. I purge often.
I like this idea. The double sticky backing allows us to prep the scrap backgrounds to be ready to cut for different cards. So much easier than fitting them as you go on individual cards. This would be nice if done in a color palate. Like reds & pinks or shades of blue etc.
Brilliant video,so inspirational thankyou.x
Since I haven't created enough layouts or cards in order to have a lot of scraps, I'll keep your video available for when I need it. I saw an online video that demonstrated cutting strips of paper by using a paper shredder that didn't cut crossways. Also, I've ordered the Tim Holtz Deckle Torn Edge Trimmer so I'll be able to weave different colors of cardstock that doesn't have a smooth look. WOW, there's so much to utilize in our hobby!!!
Welcome to the hobby, you'll get those scraps soon enough! There are lots of tools. Go slow and enjoy the process!
I keep anything one square inch and up, that's mostly because I have many small dies that I can use small bits instead of a large cardstock sheet. I recently used a bunch of strips (varying widths) much like you did in this video, but set them aside (temporarily) for inspiration. That makes this video very timely for me. Thanks!
Absolutely save my scraps! I tend to use them a lot so my collection does stay manageable.
Thank you for the great ideas.
I keep everything!
Great inspiration. THankYou for sharing… now I want to go try some of your ideas😘
I keep my scraps in a basket the size of a cigar box...then when it's full, I make a bunch of panels to use another time. Thanks for the great card ideas (love that TSM bday die!)
Justine, these are all so cheery and happy! It makes me want to start trimming down my scrap bin, which is overflowing. Fun video.
My scraps fit more into the category of dingy size. I occasionally go thru and toss them. I also make the decision when it becomes a scrap if it is big enough to keep
That was fun! Thanks!
Amazing cards, I love your card designs 😍 I am okay with throwing scraps away most days 😂 the colored cardstock scraps I have in A4 plastic pockets green& blue together etc. So my scraps pail is about the size of a pizza box ❤ thanks for sharing your creativity Hugs xx
I have large plastic envelopes and I sort my scraps by rainbow color. I keep these in the bottom section of my cubby that is right next to my feet. I find I use my scraps a lot more when they are close and sorted. I also labeled my envelopes and this helps me too. Loved your ideas - going to go make some right now!
My Scraps are in file folders for each color And are filed in a large plastic container. It’s very helpful and encourages me to use My scraps!
Great ideas! I always enjoy your videos.
I keep a box of paper scraps; mostly bigger pieces. About the size of a high school annual? Anyway, I enjoy the ideas for using up scraps.
I've started gluing scraps into pages in a book to then cut up as desired for my junk journals. But sometimes I get behind. I love this idea to use up paper strips!
I'd say my scrap pile is the size of a box 15" x 15" x 10". Great suggestions! Thx.
Thank you for sharing!
LOVE THIS!!! I had SO much fun doing this with you chickie. I now NEED (okay...want) an 8 1/2 x 11 die cutter.....enabler!!!! Those cards are INSANE. Love them all. I keep them, have a hard time getting rid of them.....lol. 😘😃😘🎨
Love all of your ideas. Didn’t ever think of using something like this to diecut pieces such as words. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful cards! As for my scraps, well, they could have fit into the bathtub for sure with maybe a bit of room. Lol. I have recently downsized. I went through and kept only large pieces and sentiment strips. That’s is. I cut away the used parts from using my Cricut. Now I put everything by colour into a 12” x 12” scrapbook. It doesn’t close but I leave it by my desk on the floor and it is working really well for me. Easy access to them and just as easy to put away another piece that was used. I do recommend this. Thames the time to cut down the unusable bits and put them by colour in a scrapbook sleeve. Keep the white page that it cames with for stability. If you remove it your pages will just droop. Hope this helps someone. This has been the best solution for me so far.
I’ve been contemplating just that kind of storage for my full 12” x 12” pieces. At this time I already have them in scrapbook sleeves but store them in the clear plastic boxes purchased from Michael’s, JoAnn’s, Tuesday Morning, etc. But just yesterday I thought how great it’d be to store those sleeves in the kind of apparatus that used to be in phone booths, wherein the oftentimes quite large phone books would be suspended from a shelf, but then could be flipped up and over onto the shelf for access. Just a pipe dream I’m sure, as I doubt that there are many who even remember those gizmos!!
Very cool! Tfs!
Love these cards! Thanks for sharing. I have a huge drawer filled with scraps and I go through them once year. :)
I just did my yearly punch and purge of scraps...when my kids were little that was a job for them...and they could create with whatever they punched. Great ideas for more ways to help me use up all the scraps.
Great idea!
Amazing video, so far the best one using scraps!! Thank you so much.
Mine is like Pinocchio’s nose - always growing! :)
haha!
My scrap bin is a small 5x7 bin
Thank you for the sharing your great ideas for scrap strips your ideas are super cute !!!! Love this video.
I love them all, such fabulous ideas.
I use 2 iris 12x12 plastic boxes...keeping warm colors in one and cool colors in the other. Unfortunately I rarely use them! 😕
Love, love, love! Thanks for sharing your talents and techniques!
I like this idea! i keep every piece/strip of patterned paper from my 6x6 packs. these would be great as a little border! Would typing paper (I'm dating myself here!) as a base be sturdy enough, do you think?
Sad to say I have a milk crate bin full of card scraps. All broken down in color families. But still WAY to much. I could spend a week cutting scraps with various dies.
Love What you did, Justine! TFS
At one point I had an overwhelming amount as well. I sorted and only kept everything bigger than a card panel. One time I threw out the whole box. Do what you gotta do!
Great ideas🙌🏽🙌🏽thx
Beautiful cards Justine! Love the different ways you used this rainbow scrap sheet!
Genial!
My solid colored paper scraps fit into a 12x12 scrapbook paper container. I have them roughly divided by color, and each color in its own pocket folder. I have another paper container for patterned scraps, and the really narrow ones that make good striped backgrounds are separate as well.
Gorgeous cards!
Titanic, of course!
Awesome video! Thanks for all of the great ideas!
What a great video!!! Love all those ideas for all the scraps I have lying all over the place. Each card was so beautiful.
I do save my strips in a 12 by 12 plastic bin. Thanks for the great ideas, I'm so inspired to get out the scraps and start making cards! I found you from Ingrid's video--have now subscribed to you as well!
Thanks for stopping by :)
Great ideas thanks
Great!!
Great cards!
Such great and happy cards, love how you used the strips💕you are the CAS Queen😍👑
Fabulous collaboration with 2 of my favorites! My supply is minimal but soon to get smaller thanks!!!
