Explanation for the ending where Sweden throws away the photo of him and Aland: Sweden realises that he has to move on and couldn't stay in his shell any longer, so he seeks out someone new to accompany him. But on one side, despite him throwing the photo away, he still loves Aland, and trusted her to keep the photo of him so she can remember the good times back then. This shows that Sweden no longer sees his daughter, Aland, as a daughter, but as an equal, and wishes to longer seek her. In all, Sweden finally understands her and himself, he doesn't want to pry into her anymore, and due to his true love for her, wishes her to be truly happy, with him or not.

They decided that Åland should remain with Finland due to the continuous island chainlink Finland has to Åland, which means it is possible to sail to Åland while always having land in sight. The same is not possible from Sweden although Åland is technically closer to Sweden. The Swedes argued that it should be ruled by distance while the Finns argued that their archipelago was a more meaningful connection. Meanwhile, the big powers also wanted to reduce Swedes might, remembering the Swedish empire of the past. So they thought it was a nice way to cut down Swedens might a little bit at the same time, so they opted for the Archipelago argument. Meanwhile Åland also enjoys demilitarization, which means there are no military bases in Åland despite its tactically advantageous location. If Åland opted to cut out of Finland, this status between Finland and Russia would also come into jeopardy as Sweden would not have such restrictions. Meaning that Ålanders would likely be conscripted into the Swedish military together with a Swedish military / naval base being constructed in Åland. All in all, it's a matter of convenience and comfort all around that makes most people happy with the situation. Finland will always protect Åland as Åland is a major source of income for the Finnish state as it is one of the richest parts of Finland overall.

Well in fact Åland is in better position being autonomous region under Finland than being part of Sweden. For example taxes gathered in Åland go to local government (And having quite much of shipping industry there that said tax sum is not very small either.) Åland is one country's wealthies regions. And Helsinki has very little that it can order Åland to do. If it was province of Sweden, then there would be no local autonomy, probably local economy would be quite much smaller and so on...
When I first watched this a couple of years back I didn't know what the music was and now I do and it brings back my own more recent memories too and It's just weird how my emotional state hasn't changed much since then.

Volvo they was volunteers. Sweden didnt SEND anything. And it was about 8000 not 10 000
And Finland really didn't get _that_ much sympathy after WWII, as they were counted as Axis cobelligerents. Finland had to pay war reparations to the USSR. Then again, Finland did also work in the Allies' interests during the Lapland War, kicking out the Germans in the north. It's complicated.

Well in fact Åland is in better position being autonomous region under Finland than being part of Sweden. For example taxes gathered in Åland go to local government (And having quite much of shipping industry there that said tax sum is not very small either.) Åland is one country's wealthies regions. And Helsinki has very little that it can order Åland to do. If it was province of Sweden, then there would be no local autonomy, probably local economy would be quite much smaller and so on...

This is so relatable and emotional. Really hits you hard in the feels
When I first watched this a couple of years back I didn't know what the music was and now I do and it brings back my own more recent memories too and It's just weird how my emotional state hasn't changed much since then.
5:33 Soviet Union did all this in 1939, not 1941. Winter War started in 1939 when Soviets demanded large land areas from Finland, and when Finland said no, Soviets faked an attack on themselves, blamed Finns and attacked.
