First time I picked up a guitar, my freind who was playing exceptionally well as far as I was concerned told me the secret to playing guitar (or any instrument for that matter). TIMING Stay in time and even if you can't get your fingers to the frets quickly enough just keep playing...they will eventually catch up. Tap with your foot and develpo a natural metronome. Oh and just play the notes that sound good. QED.
He's got this list in his blog: 1) Know what chords go together 2) Know what scale works over these chords 3) Understand this concept (which is called diatonic harmony) and be able to know the key of a song BY EAR 4) An ability to read rhythm notation and know how to read guitar TAB is also essential to progress past an early beginner stage.
As a beginner watching this video is like skipping school for a month and trying to figure out wth you’re talking about. Back to day 6 for me. See ya 👋
I believe it's a big advantage to be able to read music fluently even though I personally can't but would like to star learning. And thank you for this video.
You just explained how to know what chords are in that key better than any guitar teacher I've ever had 👌👏 the only thing I've been struggling with recently solved in 5 minutes! Can't thank you enough! ❤ x
Key is like key to a puzzle Puzzle is a bunch of chords that are together Key is the one that unlocks the puzzle in a way that the puzzle after unlocked feels even or good Chords f g dm etc Key will be c
if you have an internet connection and some common sense...type it in your browser! the common sense is for all the internet garbage out there. tons of pros and people like our host to guide us... good video!
Wow this is the first time I understood Music theory after being confused for so long. And I could translate my lessons from Indian classical music to Western Music ( sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni, Sa) Thank you so very much 😊
Just started watching your channel after playing guitar for over thirty years. And you know what, I never even knew what chords were in the key of G...or C, or any key for that matter. I've always written songs just by ear and what sounds good. But I thought it's finally about time I should learn some theory lol. So I'll be watching more of your videos as I like your teaching style. Keep up the good work.
Im pretty sure the key of your song depends on the chords you play. But the key of the song gets its pitch raised. And so the way it works is each time you go up the guitar neck that's 1 step. So from E to F. 1 step.
Hi Andy. Just a quick thank you. You have helped me more than you'll ever know. The look on your face when you make reference to Radiohead is priceless, in a good way. Keep up the great work, I admire your courage and commitment.
You learn to speak before reading and writing but, it sure helps in life to be able to do all three.😎 I always think it's a case of the exceptions proves the rule here, as so often is. . The often quoted gang of non readers super players are/were so gifted musically that, it didn't really matter. For mere mortals.....
By FAR the clearest, most thorough explanation of essential music theory I have found in my viewing of hours and hours of intro to theory guitar videos.
Learn to read standard notation! I was going to send this to a student but not after hearing “Most of my favorite musicians didn’t read music.” I admit I stopped the video so if he goes on to say read Music I apologize. Separate yourself from the crowd. Many times, as a banjo player, employers have been shocked that I can read standard notation, I like that. You can’t fully understand theory unless you can read! I make most of my students learn how to read because I can then teach the theory. You can’t teach theory with tabs. Playing by ear is also very important. Not knowing theory doesn’t mean you can’t play, it just means it’s much harder to articulate your ideas, or understand what is happening. Music is not magic, it’s math. Rhythm is key, that I agree with.
Paul McCartney can sight read really well. He orchestrated No More Lonely Nights. George Martin taught Paul & John. I now think it’s extremely helpful to navigate through written music. Since I’ve stated to learn it I’ve improved my music theory & I can pick up tunes and melodies much faster.
good singing here, love you, and i also would like to see a music theory for beginners, such as CAGED system, circle of 4ths and 5ths, intervals and all their practical usage if its even possible, anyway, cheers from Russia, Andy
“think of it like a painters pallete certian colors go together really well” me: oh thank god I know this one “idk what colors go together really well”
Let me help, here are a few to start with. Guitar Goddess, Guitar by Ash, Ellen aka for3v3rfaithful, Lari Basilio, Nita Strauss, Kate Kate OneMusicSchool, Sophie Burrell, Mary Spender, Sophie Loyd, Lizzy Hale 🎸
Andy does the addition of a Capo change the key of the song as well? I ask because singers often decide on where to put a Capo to best fit with their voice when they play and sing or when they believe a song needs to b either higher/lower.... this sometimes is referred to as a key.... so are keys of songs exclusively based on the chords or scales used... or does a Capo decide on the key as well apologies for the long and confusing question
+Y.A.P the Red Yes. A capo changes the note sounds to a higher pitch than open tuning, so therefore changes the key 100%. Learning CAGED shapes can help in working out what chord is actually being sounded when a capo is used 👍🏻
Hi Andy, have been following you for a few months now, love your lessons, was wondering when you are holding a workshop in Leeds again as myself and two bandmates (just starting out together) would love to come over to one of your workshops?
My problem is I am dyslexic and looking at music notation is an exercise if futility. The notes swim in front of my eyes. Is there a method that will translate music notation into tab or another simple to read notation?
did you know, that someone who it is said is the best songwriter to come out of Manchester in many years, someone who was the song writer for one of the biggest bands since the Beatles, cant even name most of the chords he is playing on the guitar. Course im talking about noel Gallagher and oasis.
Now I know sight reading well because it's the easiest way to learn new pieces on the piano. But only people who play classical guitar really use it for guitar. The piano did help me learn harmony better than the guitar because it's just easier to see relationships on the piano.
Thanks Andy, What is a fourth and a fifth? I get that fact that we use do- re- me- far- so- la- tee- do or (doh) . I thought 'Doh' when you mentioned 4th's n 5th's :)

So true 👍

I've been trying to avoid music theory for too long now.
Ive been learning piano for 8 years. And u can't survive pianio without music theory so this is all basic stuff for me.
@@claremoloney985 So you just came here to comment and mention how good you are? Lol.

My requests for new lessons:
1. Explaining time signatures (other than 4/4)
2. Muting the strings for playing the lead guitar
ZielonySzparag i can teach you muting, touch the string so it does ring 🙂🙂😂
@@jimmygubbins my guitar must be broken, when I touch my strings they do the complete opposite😉
"I don't know what colours go together well"
Andy Crowley 😆
Andy Guitar what do u want to say in vedio? I am bad at english ..
Red and Green always go together if they are the only two colours 😂
reds and purples.. blue and purples, pink..orange and yellows.. green and blue.. some dark, pastels or neon.. :)
Miiiiiister Crowley..
Red and green are opposite colors on the color wheel and are very striking when put together, actually. Van Gogh and Picasso used them together a lot.

that blew my fugging mind thank you!
so basically a key is a class of particular chords that go really well together
am I right???
Thats it dude

Supper good video to start music theory
This is a lot to take in?
Yes, study the major scale, that is true, most of our music is based on it. If you want to study jazz learn the melodic minor, and it’s harmony.
I was with you till you started playing.
God bless you Andy !!!
1st 3rd 5th note
Started learning today, almost got the hang of 'for what it's worth'. Great videos Andy keep it up
Finally I understand. I was wondering why I'm learning these scales. Thank you Andy!
I thought music theory would be extremely difficult but Andy's beginner's video is superb. Thanks.
This is what I want....thanks for this lesson
Thanks 😅
All of those musicians know some music theory. They know a lot of patterns which are part of scales and what the notes they're playing are.
I think diatonic means two tones and not from the tonic. Di is a Greek prefix for two.
Any special course for left handed playing right hand guitar
Thank you so much for this! Very helpful☺️
Lol, reds go with oranges but not with their complimentary colors like green, I just thought that was funny
