  • A road atlas or road map may seem outdated since everybody has a smart phone with GPS now. The truth is a good, old-fashioned paper map never loses signal or has a dead battery. Let's look at a few different ones to see which ones you like better.

If you're a AAA member you can get all the road maps from the entire United States for free! But I also have an atlas as well.

I’m a long haul trucker, I have the truckers atlas, I rarely use it anymore but you never know when the map apps and gps might go down. I pick up free state maps from welcome centers and rest areas. They usually have more detail than the atlas.
    Great video Bryan.

I like the Rand McNally truckers road atlas. It gives great mileage data for planning. I also carry an exit guide. It tells what is at every exit along every interstate. Great for finding lodging, gas stations or food if you want a particular brand.

We keep a current Rand McNally atlas in the vehicle even though we have GPS. Since my youth, I have enjoyed going over a map with a nice magnifying glass. One of the most interesting maps I have seen are those used by pilots flying without instruments. It was very detailed and showed things like stock ponds, small lakes large metal barn roofs....anything that would reflect light so you can find your bearing.

Man this bought back many memories traveling with my father on scouting trips. We always had a rule whoever sat upfront in the passenger seat had to stay alert and follow on the map so we always knew our location and also any detours to avoid traffic etc. You would calculate general distance and such with the scale and all. Its a lost skill that really is still helpful to this day.

Helpful, thank you. Driving across the US soon and already know there's no cell service in some areas. I got the Rand McNalley 2025 Large Scale Road Atlas. Wish I'd had one sooner. I learned to drive with GPS and have a poor sense of direction and location as a result. With the atlas, it's easier to develop a mental map and understand my position at nay given time, even in my current city.

I'm glad you've done a map video! I like to use them, I think I'm faster with them most of the time. No battery power required.
Decades ago, when I was in 4th grade, we had a class just about maps. You'd take a laminated map out of a file box, and the corresponding worksheet. You would learn to use the Legend, learn to find routes through either a city, or across a country. Near the end of that year, we drew our own maps of real locations. Some people have trouble learning to use maps, I never have. It's definitely a skill more people need.

Great video. I have road atlas in one vehicle but not the one we would most likely bug out in, and it is 25 years old. Thanks brian for waking me up to the need to get new ones in every vehicle.

Great information. I have always carried a Rand McNally in my car. The one thing people that travel on a regular basis to places a little out of the way. Update your maps of the areas you go to every year - two years. Depending on what is going on in a given State or area there might be faster routes that are added with new streets or sometimes roads get closed off and that won't be shown on an out of date map.
I am a AAA member so every time I go on a trip. I'll check to see if there is a newer map for my destination.
And as was said in another comment. AAA will send you the maps you need at no cost.
But I still keep the big Rand McNally for interstate travel.

When I am driving cross country, I always stop at the Welcome Center, when I am entering a state. I also have local maps for the area where I live.
I've never used topographic maps, but I know that they are very useful when in wild country.

This video is So valid. I have used maps/atlas's for a Long time. Suddenly we have GPS , Satellites, Great! My buddy and I traveled to Cherokee to check out the elk. Phone GPS working great, on the highway. I was going to bring printouts of the area and an atlas. Nope, lets move with technology! The onboard GPS of the rental and my phone were completely inoperable within minutes of getting off the highway. We had No idea where we were so we backtracked instead of 'winging it'. Signage was not prevalent in the area; road signs, 'elk viewing' this way etc. I found my atlas and bought an updated map as soon as we got home.

Great video! Do not underestimate the value of this information and these tools. Either for planning purposes or backup. I've always kept an atlas in my backpack as I've flown throughout the country and it has come in handy many times. When I was stuck driving thru Arkansas after severe flooding had closed many major roads, the GPS was useless. Only the paper map could help me see the big picture and get me to where I needed to be.

The Land Navigation Course I took at Pickle Meadows back in 1979 made me kind of a map-junkie.
I’ve never gotten used to a little tiny screen to tell me which way to go. A map shows you the big picture.

Over the years I have had very good luck when stopping at the state welcome center. They often have free state maps of their state. I have a collection of all the states I have been in and every few years when going to a state I have not been to in a while I make it a point to stop at the welcome centers and pick up a more current map. Paper maps are great, free makes them even better. Will not leave home with out one.

G'day Brian, great subject for a vid mate and couldn't agree more. I do prefer the book type for the car, pretty hard to spread out a large paper map in the drivers seat, but I do tuck one inside the cover to lay out on the bonnet or a table.
FYI; here in Victoria, Australia we can purchase the map books that the first responders use, (the level of detail is amazing and provides contour lines also), so they are good for on the road as well as camping etc. Anything like that in the US ? If so, well worth a bit extra dough IMO.
    Cheers Duke.

NOTE: they publish those big atlas maps every year. Sometimes you can go to Walmart at the end of the year and get last years map at a discount. I keep a general US road atlas and a detail street map of the areas I work/live in. I used to have to find survey markers on road sides that didn't have an address. I loved the ADC street maps (detail by county). ADC makes detail map books of streets with an index of street names.

Couple weeks ago someone snagged the atlas out of the backseat of my nephew's car. Shame on him for leaving the window open that much. But it blew my mind that someone would stoop so low to grab that atlas. Then I understood why when I went to get a replacement and it was nearly $80. I was like good got a mighty great googly moogly. Just 5 years ago I bought his original Atlas for like $9.99. I gave him mine instead since I'm so familiar with the country.

Also, do you know of any homesteading/prepping groups in the Atlanta Metro area? Googled has failed me, trying to find any. Just thinking it would be nice to have a message list, facebook group, annually/quarterly get-togethers or whatever for regionally specific info/tip sharing and fellowship.

Good stuff Sir! Old school paper maps are hard to beat when planning trips/routes because you can see the big picture in more detail (if that makes sense) than online maps. Every 2 to 3 years, I'll swing into a truck stop and pick up an updated, **big** atlas.
