So many heinous crimes in South Africa go under the radar. One that still haunts me after all these years is the Gert van Rooyen/Joey Haarhoff case of the 1980's. I still remember the faces of those beautiful girls that were abducted and NEVER found. How horrible it must have been for those poor parents to never get closure. Thank you for highlighting Michael's story. Evil comes in so many forms and many of those people are never caught.
@@SharonHattingh1303 I know, I remember that so clearly, I was about 12 at the time . Shocking to say the least, and the only reason nothing came of it is because government officials were involved in the human trafficking
@@shelleystegen5767 My friend (now a retired detective) worked on the case and I bullied him (feel bad that I did it, but I just HAD to know). Well, between what told me and the info that was readily available things looked grim. I'm no investigator, but if you put two and two together...well a lot of things make sense. There were a sick group of people who were involved in ch@$ traff@# even in those days. The girls were all within a certain age range. I think Tracy Lee Scott Crossley was the youngest. They were lured in by Joey Haarhoff and, get this, her young cousin Joan, was one of them. Now this is pure speculation. Van Rooyen was part of a syndicate and he was just the henchman. Perhaps he was allowed certain 'privileges' with the girl in order to keep them in line. In Jozi, a suburb called Saxonwold, there was, allegedly, a residence of some high political or business figure and they sent van Rooyen specifics on whom he should abduct...say blonde, about 13, small for her age, etc. Like ordering on Amazon. These girls would be captured and evaluated. Now remember....this is my gut feeling here....the girls who did not make the cut for the Saxonwold party was to be eliminated. Of course, ol Gert, the preacher boy, had his own sick fun with them while his equally deranged female accomplice looked on. The police eventually came to the rescue after a student from a local high school escaped. She told the papers that she was waiting for the bus when a nice middle-aged lady pulled up and asked if she could give her a lift. The girl, afraid she'd be late fir school got in the car. According to her the nice lady offered her a drink, which she took. After that all went blank and she woke up in a wardrobe. She heard no sound and realized no-one was home, do she got out, ran to a neighbour and called the police. Than evening, when van Rooyen realized he was not going to charm himself out of this mess, he fled the scene to the end of Flower Street, which crosses the Apies River. There he proceeded to shoot Joey and himself. During the investigation the police found large containers filled with all kinds of abrasive chemicals. They basically thought that, those difficult little girls, would be killed by himself and their remains dissolved in these barrels. They found little evidence about the girls I'm the house. I think my friend mentioned a back pack with the name Annemarie Wapenaar on it. What happened to these innocents after transportation to Saxonwold will forever haunt me. And, yes, rumors have it that some high profile, elite, were involved. One thing I'm sure of, they are going to receive what they deserve once they move on from this world. After all these years I still pray for their safety and for their poor families. Do you know the worst part? This happened just one block over from where my granny lived. We need to be extremely careful, people. Watch your kids AND yourself. I studied Child Protection, the occult and treatment of victims. I do not practice anymore, but if there is someone out there who needs to talk, I'm here. I'm a qualified counselor, but I am also a good listener.

Hi Danella. Thanks for sharing this South African murder so respectfully. As a South African, I have heard of this case before but not in so much detail. TFS ❤❤❤
My family lived in Welkom until I finished Primary School (Grade 7 in South Africa ). I'm wondering now if we had gone to the same swimming pool or karate dojo, or even just had some friends in common. I remember reading about this case when it happened and I was appalled that something so horrific could happen in a place with such sweet childhood memories for me. Thank you Danelle for covering this case, and other cases from South Africa - you're bringing more light to a very dark situation in my home country. Our family is also part of the statistic - my brother was murdered in 2009. His murder was just never solved, due to the corruption and mishandling of the case.
Thank you for your input, interest, and in-depth research on this case. I’m from Welkom myself and used to serve in the SAP several years before this incident. I’ve always wondered what actually happened, as it gained national attention. We don’t live near Welkom anymore, but when I heard about it, I was shocked. There were a few other cases in Welkom that were almost as bad, but this one always reminded me that people can be evil, and you never know if the person standing next to you in line is one of them. This has made me very wary of strangers. Great job, and keep up the good work!
South African here.. Our crime stats are shocking.. I saw some questions about whether it "was this bad during Apartheid".. It really depends on who you ask and whether you're "ex-priviledged" or currently advantaged.. complicated.. and a lot we don't even know.. I've lived and worked abroad.. WARTS & All.. South Africa is hands down the the best place on earth ❤
South Africa is beautiful, I visited years ago, the climate, flowers, waterfalls, thepeople I met, all wonderful. I wss lucky to be there when the Jacuenda tree's bloomed.
I grew up and still live in welkom. After watching this, i asked my grandmother if she remembered this case, and she told me my oldest cousin shared dorm rooms with her in school. This is a little too close to home.
I just have to say, I watch true crime videos bc I enjoy the content, but I have to say in recent years I tend to watch more based on the creator. You have remained the same kind and humble creator that you have been from the beginning, which is not always the case, sometimes creators change as their numbers grow, but you have remained kind and humble even with big numbers and it shines through you that it is genuinely who you are 🖤 thanks for your content and also for you 🖤🙏
Thank you for doing great research on this case. I live in Welkom, and I stayed a block away from where these 2 monsters lived (where the crime took place). I will surely follow you and support your channel. I appreciate the professionalism you have showed in the making of this video. I've Seen a few content creators who did videos on this particular case but didn't have all the facts straight.
I live in South Africa….this case shocked me to my core!! I truly believe there is no rehabilitation or hope for these two people….my heart breaks for his parents- I still remember his mother’s face as they watched Maartens being taken away 😢💔
The way you tell a story is absolutely incredible. By far my favorite RUclipsr, what a terrible thing to happen to such an innocent man. Thank you for what you do.
As I am watching this, I am visiting my sister in Welkom, SA. my grandmother's grave is in the cemetery where it happened. SA cemeteries are no longer safe to visit. There are no upkeep and vandals and creeps lurk there. My sister just informed me that the killers lived a few houses down to where we are currently at. Muti made from human body parts are used for witchcraft, which is very alive in SA. Herbs and spices are used by traditional healers, which is also called muti, but not viewed as witchcraft, but more like a doctor.
Hiiii from South Africa 👋🏼 I didn’t even know of this case! About to watch, thank you for sharing! Just a little bit of information regarding surnames of this nature. “Van” is actually pronounced like “vun” or “fun” - so difficult to explain actually but just incase anyone wants to know. It’s a very popular Afrikaans part-surname in our country. 🇿🇦
Please look into Adrian Jones. When people ask, "What is the one that has stuck with you the most?" it is always hands down Adrian's story. It is no exaggeration when I say I have lost sleep over his case, and cried many tears. As a mother, one of the most horrific cases of child abuse I have ever seen.
That is the saddest story I’ve ever heard of. I live in Kansas City, KS, very near where it happened. I could walk out my back door, walk a mile through the woods, and be at the house he was murdered in. Our community was absolutely shocked when his murder came to light. None of us even knew he existed because the kids that lived in that house were homeschooled.
I was friends with Michael in school, he was so sweet he'd walk me home so I'd be safe because I was usually alone. He was my guardian angel. I miss him so much. Edit: Chane was also a grade or two ahead of me in school before she dropped out. She was a known creep and everyone I knew thought she was strange in a bad way.
I accidently came across your platform. I appreciated the carefull and repsectfull way you discussed this awfull murder. I am South African and. I wasnt even aware of this case specifically but in the past few years we have had many cases with similar satanic or muti killings. Muti killings are very common and its very scary and not sure what worst Muti or satanic killings. My condolences to the family.
Danielle correction. SOUTH AFRICA IS NOT AFRICA ! South Africa IS JUST ONE OF 55 countries that make up the African Continent. We are individual with independent judicial systems....
I remember my mom telling me about this when I was younger, but only after years of remembering this story, I now know what exactly happened, and it's terrifying to think that such people exist. Thank you for your time. Love from SA.
it ripped me apart to hear that the man who did the autopsy also was the family doctor for years… i can’t imagine the way he felt knowing these people SO well and then having to count the stab wounds on him… i couldn’t fathom that. 😔

There are so many factors that influence the high murder rate in SA, prison sentences are probably not the main contribution factor. I'm from a country with the same kind of system and it has one of the lowest murder rates in the world. Also way lower than the US with their so called 'harsh sentences'
Chills went down my spine, when I heard the snippet of the letter that Michael's father wrote. I think families should use this kind of writing more, because it's very impactful! May Michael rest in peace, this world lost a very beautiful soul wayyy too soon.
I was next to my mom and dad when we found my brother dead. The screams from her tiny body, I’ll never forget. The inhuman strength she had to fight me off to get to his body as I tried to hold her back….. was unreal. My heart breaks for this family the way my heart broke for my family, myself and my brother. May God guide them!🙏🫶🏼
I’m late to the party, but before reacting to this video, I just want to point out how absolutely lush and beautiful you look. I’ve heard about this case, looking forward to your take. Thank you Danelle
You should look into the Alison Botha case, which also took place in South Africa. She was nearly beheaded and her attackers are already out of prison :/ Our justice system is overwhelmed with awful criminals and they get out way before their supposed to.
That is so unbelievably horrific.... poor Michael and his family. 😢 I agree that his father's letter was really fucking powerful. I won't ever forget that one.
I'm South African, you could get out after 18 years on good behavior. It's sad, but that's our reality. We've been crying for the DP to return, but ah well 😢 Thank you for sharing this
It's not funny (but it is) but when you said a wooden-legged man tried to steal a car in Welkom, my first thought was "yeah, that tracks". Welkom is a special place. ETA: South Africa doesn't have as many serial killer / true crime cases as the US but we do have a few really weird ones. If you want more interesting SA cases, try the Modimolle Monster, the Devilsdorp case (for another weirdly occult case), Daisy de Melker, Elifase Msomi, and Gert van Rooyen (another despicable couples case).
Your presentation is brilliant!! This case was never presented to South Africans in such detail. One can almost say it was presented academically just basic facts to South Africans. But you show the implication of childhood trauma. Your detail in this is very important because parents need to know how they are able to develop children in monsters. I don't think the same judge will be deciding her parole but we can pray God stops it. Thank you for this brilliant presentation
Thank you Danelle for another great episode❤ prayers and love to Michael’s family 🙏🏻 my heart breaks … so senseless 💔 may the killers get exactly what they deserve. Much love from Maryland

Hey, if anyone uses pocket casts as a podcast app, they just added the ability to rate shows. I just gave Danelle 5 stars and saw she had no ratings yet! I gave her the first one. So, please, go give her a rating since she just started putting her episodes on podcasts!
This case was so upsetting, but, as a South African your description of the wooden-legged man trying to take Michael's car and his father's car being nearly stolen on the scene, was very funny. This is how our lovely country is. In this horrific tale, this 'lighter' moment will find many South Africans giggling a bit. We know this scenario so well.
@sharonpretorius789 I also giggled a bit at that part true portrayal of our country, I live in Ficksburg only heard of the case from a US true crime channel in 2022
I actually come from that Welkom area. It is still a very infamous story and people still speak about that story. 😬 Was really tragic and a lot of people still feel hurt.
Just a little note. This wierd life sentencing talked about here is almost litterally the normal sentencing outside of the US. The sentencing here in this case sounds very the same as every other vestern country I know apart from the US. :)
What a horrible wicked & vile couple to take the life of a man so loved. My thoughts and prayers are with his family & friends. Appreciate all you do Danelle. Much love hunni ♡♡♡
Excellent narration! Not one er or um until the letter that his dad wrote, showing your emotion. I see a few comments to look into the Alison Botha case. Definitely read her book. Its called "I have life". Rip poor Michael.
I’m honestly not surprised, our media coverage for cases here is bad, unless it’s high profile or if Bheki Cele makes an appearance then it’s very unlikely it’ll get any awareness
Danielle, I know that this was quite difficult for you to delve into and for that my compassion for you has immensely grown. I started this video last night before bed and then stopped around 10 minutes in, then went to bed. So very glad that I did that and did not continue until this morning as it probably would have colored my dreams if I was even able to go to sleep. No way, so cool to see somebody finally doing a video on this. I'[m friends with the guy she dated before this guy, and it's funny because when we all read the story in the paper on Monday, we all called each other and said it must be her... she's the only person we know who is unstable enough to actually do something like that... like as metalhead teens we used to joke about gruesome shit, but she took it all very literal apparently
OMG I got 36 mins in a then burst out laughing. So my friend is the 'Satanist'. Not real satanism though... it was more for the show than anything, mans a reeeeaaaal softy irl. I think people need to understand the kind of metal subculture we all were part of. We were the outcast, the bullied kids, the ones nobody liked... we used all the 'satanism' stuff to seem scary, so people can leave us alone. He is now married and has kids and has a normal life. Also, dating older guys till about 23 was very normal and accepted back then. I dated a 23 year old when I was 16. Now I can see how that was baaaaaad.
Also it's quite sad how the only people who did take her red flags seriously, was the 'rough' crowd she was hanging out. I was part of that crowd. Yes we were rough, but we were all and still are good people who were just young and scared. But we knew. We tried telling her to get help. That's why she stopped hanging with them....
I live in Welkom and I remember this case. It was something that just shocked the Welkom community and we were scared that there was going to be a satanic cult in Welkom. My mom worked with Martins mother and during this time, my mom said that you could see the stress on this mother's face.

@@SharonHattingh1303 those missing girls disturbed me. How do 6 girls vanish, very sad 😥

@elzaancrooks9039 theres a short documentary on it on Showmax. A series called Huisgenoot ware lewens dramas. Not sure which season or episode though
How these two demented people found each other is scary. Pure evil!
This is the terrifying part! You wonder whether people like this getting together increases the possibility of them acting out on these weird thoughts - I definitely think so
Well, Gypsy Rose found Nicolas, and together they murdered her abusive mother.

South African 🇿🇦 here.. thank you for covering crime stories from our country- the crime here doesn’t get much attention. Hope to see more.
A really tragic story. As a South African I am impressed by your substantial research on this case as well as your excellent pronounciation :)
youve been making videos for 8 years?! ive been watching you for 8 years?! thats insane!!
LITERALLY!! Hahah that made me remember, that I'm not sixteen anymore!

This is a reminder that evil can look like a normal person like you or me. That’s what makes it scary. Evil can look sweet and innocent or a kind, nice guy. RIP Michael.
I'm so sorry about your brother's death. My sincere condolences. Do we even have cold case squads in SA?❤
I'm so sorry for your loss❤🙏
Did you used to go to church of England in south Africa opposite welkom prep?
@@naomievans9888 No, I went to the St. Helena NG Kerk in Othello Road.
Gosh I am so sorry.. our judiciary is useless
Thank you for covering a South African case 🙏🏼
Thank you for your input, interest, and in-depth research on this case. I’m from Welkom myself and used to serve in the SAP several years before this incident. I’ve always wondered what actually happened, as it gained national attention. We don’t live near Welkom anymore, but when I heard about it, I was shocked. There were a few other cases in Welkom that were almost as bad, but this one always reminded me that people can be evil, and you never know if the person standing next to you in line is one of them. This has made me very wary of strangers. Great job, and keep up the good work!
I am from Welkom i went to school with all of the parties involved. It was a horrible time in our small town. RIP Micheal
South African here! Thank you for covering this case. You've done more to raise awareness for crime in South Africa than our own police...
TWENTY YEARS??? That's insane. I'm South African and I'm horrified!
I doubt she will be released when 20 years are up.
So true South Africa is the best place on earth
😊
I grew up and still live in welkom. After watching this, i asked my grandmother if she remembered this case, and she told me my oldest cousin shared dorm rooms with her in school. This is a little too close to home.
I just have to say, I watch true crime videos bc I enjoy the content, but I have to say in recent years I tend to watch more based on the creator. You have remained the same kind and humble creator that you have been from the beginning, which is not always the case, sometimes creators change as their numbers grow, but you have remained kind and humble even with big numbers and it shines through you that it is genuinely who you are 🖤 thanks for your content and also for you 🖤🙏
@@MM-ng8lj I’ve noticed that she also covers cases that aren’t that well known too which I appreciate but couldn’t agree more with you
Thank you for doing great research on this case.
Thank you for covering this case. From a fellow South African.
Thank you for covering South Africa case's

I have no words for this case. This is the most disturbing case I've heard about.
Woah! Thats a statement!
Definitely not the most disturbing case I have heard… disappointed honestly. Not even in the top 10
I definitely agree with you, so heartbreaking.
Mark Kilroy’s case was equally brutal and horrific in Mexico 😢
Channon Christianson and Christopher Newsom case is the case that haunts me still
The way you tell a story is absolutely incredible.
I'm from Welkom Free State South Africa I live in this small town where this brutal murder was committed this was a terrible shock for everyone....
Welkom is not a small town..
And Muti is pronounced Mootea
Me neither
In the afrikaans language the 'v' is pronounced as 'f'.
Yes this is also very very sad
I was friends with Michael in school, he was so sweet he'd walk me home so I'd be safe because I was usually alone. He was my guardian angel. I miss him so much. Edit: Chane was also a grade or two ahead of me in school before she dropped out. She was a known creep and everyone I knew thought she was strange in a bad way.
How sad . May he RIP. His poor folks, I can't even imagine
She said South Africa multiple times.
Exactly!
What is your problem? She said South Africa several times.
Duh....omw she said South Africa
I remember my mom telling me about this when I was younger, but only after years of remembering this story, I now know what exactly happened, and it's terrifying to think that such people exist.
Thank you for your time. Love from SA.
The look of shock on my face when you mentioned the city Welkom AND pronounced it correctly, well done Danelle!
@@JuliaPols I was also super impressed by that.
it ripped me apart to hear that the man who did the autopsy also was the family doctor for years… i can’t imagine the way he felt knowing these people SO well and then having to count the stab wounds on him… i couldn’t fathom that. 😔
Well done Danelle very clear very descriptive and new
Many Thanks.
Nothing like a wallop of a Mother, good for you Mum. I'm sure IT felt the rage.
I hope Mum and family/friends find some peace in time, it's what Michael would want.
R.I.P Michael.
No wonder murder rate is so high in South Africa with the prison sentences being so lenient.
There are so many factors that influence the high murder rate in SA, prison sentences are probably not the main contribution factor. I'm from a country with the same kind of system and it has one of the lowest murder rates in the world. Also way lower than the US with their so called 'harsh sentences'
The prisons are hot beds of crime and corruption.
I agree with u. Did u know that a life sentence in SA means you only get 25 yrs and most get out on parole after 10 or so yes. Shockingly ridiculous
Muti killings are also perpetrated on animals -lions, elephants, giraffe.....they really are deluded thinking this will help them.
Chills went down my spine, when I heard the snippet of the letter that Michael's father wrote. I think families should use this kind of writing more, because it's very impactful! May Michael rest in peace, this world lost a very beautiful soul wayyy too soon.
I completely agree! I have never seen someone do it before but WOW. It hit hard.
May God guide them!🙏🫶🏼
I’m so very sorry. God bless you
So so sorry 😢😢
I’m late to the party, but before reacting to this video, I just want to point out how absolutely lush and beautiful you look. I’ve heard about this case, looking forward to your take. Thank you Danelle
Thank you for the respectful way you did this video.
It is truely scary how many of these things happen in South Africa. I would love to see you do a video about the Gert van Rooyen/Joey Haarhof case
You should look into the Alison Botha case, which also took place in South Africa. She was nearly beheaded and her attackers are already out of prison :/
Our justice system is overwhelmed with awful criminals and they get out way before their supposed to.
Decapitated
You should cover the farm murders in South Africa. Horrendous acts taking place.
That is so unbelievably horrific.... poor Michael and his family. 😢 I agree that his father's letter was really fucking powerful. I won't ever forget that one.
This happened in my hometown when I was a kid and wow it haunted me for the longest time
I'm South African, you could get out after 18 years on good behavior.

@sharonpretorius789 I also giggled a bit at that part true portrayal of our country, I live in Ficksburg only heard of the case from a US true crime channel in 2022
so scary to know people on our daily lives could possibly have these thoughts and fantasies and we will never know.
I agree and it’s scary
I actually come from that Welkom area. It is still a very infamous story and people still speak about that story. 😬 Was really tragic and a lot of people still feel hurt.
Just a little note. This wierd life sentencing talked about here is almost litterally the normal sentencing outside of the US. The sentencing here in this case sounds very the same as every other vestern country I know apart from the US. :)
