  • 70 year old Stephanie Stewart had worked the same Fire Tower as a spotter for 13 years outside of Hinton Alberta. One morning she failed to call in the weather conditions prompting a drive out to her remote cabin. It was found in mysterious conditions and initially they believed she was the victim of an animal attack. However a deeper investigation has led them to now believe otherwise.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Hinton RCMP at 780-865-2455 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

I live in Alberta, this case was just in the news here. There is a man named Ross Edward Kleman who operated a hydrovac truck in the area, he knew her, was working in the area when she went missing and if he had extra space he would show up and empty the septic tanks at her cabin. He is serving 18 years for murdering a young girl in Edson a nearby town. He also “found” the body of another woman in the area. Many people believe he was the one responsible and he is one of the main suspects in the case

Wonder if there is any witness to him being in the area . If there is a reward and there is people speaking of him, you'd think they would have covered this already. Hmm. Thanks for this information
Wonder how far his routes were in the area. I'm thinking her body got taken farther away than the searchers searched. But then again the hunters and hikers were all over those areas.

@@brit94 my family live in the Edson area, so it was big news, it was reported there that he was a person of interest in her disappearance and their strongest one. I believe his ex wife was the one who reported that he was working in the Hinton area at the time but I’m not sure if there was confirmation of it, I was working for Alberta Environment in 2013-14 doing groundwater monitoring and we were told to keep a look out for the missing belongings at the well sites in that area because they were remote and rarely visited

I’m actually from the area! I’ve lived in Edson my whole life. Travis was known to work in the areas as well (speculation I’ve heard around town). But Ross Klemans was more of a suspect. I don’t think she was boiling water, but I think someone else was. Boiling water on high, that water would be gone if a whole situation went down, she was caught off guard AND there was still time to take off sheets, move her etc.
I’m assuming whatever happened, happened much earlier, and whoever did this, heard someone coming to check on her, and bailed. At that point, it could’ve been 20+ hours since an actual incident happened
Edit: and at that point, her vehicle could’ve been used to move her elsewhere and then they returned to the cabin

Is anyone going to comment on the story?? She knows we love her. Don't know why they would think she was headed up the tower when there was a pot of water boiling. Seems they went in a whole lot of directions that should have been obvious from what they could clearly see. She could have seen anything from up there. An assault of some kind. If the person saw that she was up there they could have come back with their car and taken care of the witness. If her phone was in her bedroom and she ran in there and they hurt her there they would have taken the sheets to prevent leaving their own DNA.

YES @marmalade-moon, you are so right about Danelle being a light in the true crime world. When I hear the usual critiques of true crime as a genre/industry, I know for sure that there are a good deal of creators who do not fit the mould of ‘exploit and move on’, and Danelle is right up at the top (along with, in particular, John Lordan) with not only challenging the negative assumptions but showing how true crime can be a force for good and compassion in this world that needs it. I won’t rewrite everything you’ve said suffice to say that I agree with it all! And Danelle, it is so admirable that you decided to cut back on the sponsors, but I would say that I’m sure the majority of us want you to be sufficiently compensated and therefore don’t mind them because as long as your heart is in this work, I hope you continue to do it.

I'd take a look at Israel Keyes for this one. This is close enough to his home base that it was well within reach, but far enough away so as not to give away his home base's location. It was also remote enough to be an area where he would stash one of his "kill kits" that he admittedly used to target hikers on occasion. He was also meticulous about covering his tracks (at least throughout most of his span of crimes). Stephanie's disappearance occurred 6 years before Keyes was captured. He didn't mention her by name as one of the crimes he confessed to, but in response to a question about murders he may have committed in Canada, Keyes darkly remarked, "Canadians don't count."

When you stated that the other fire spotter showed up while water was still boiling. Need to know how much water was left and determine from how much she may have put in there for tea, or even for dryness in the air. Never know. But it had me thinking. Either the person passed by this other fire spotter on the road or they went the Other Direction from which the other spotter came from. ... also, would they really think the cabin was abandoned if her vehicle was in the driveway.

Just a wild theory but at this point there's no harm in throwing it out there. What if it's a serial killer that goes to very remote places, maybe stays there for a while, finds a potential victim, someone they know is kinda cut off from others, gets to know them, then kills them? The missing watch could be a trophy. Once they're done, dump the body in the wilderness where it's almost impossible to locate and then off to another remote area to start the process over again. It would've been easy for someone to hike through often enough to get acquainted with her a little bit. At least enough to where she would have no issue with opening the door to them. I don't personally know the area but what I'm picturing in my head, it would be easy enough for them to hide out in the woods to watch and learn her routine. They could also make sure that there is no one else around during the times they ran into her on their "hike" so no one else would have a description. If they are someone who wanders around from place to place then it would be easy for them to leave immediately after and stay under the radar this entire time. I say possible serial killer because of taking the watch. It's so random that all I can think is a for a trophy. I think it was someone she knew. Id be interested to know if she boiled water to make coffee. If someone stopped by, maybe she offered them a cup of coffee, put the water on to boil, and then realized she was going to be attacked. Ran outside and only made it to the front of the cabin...maybe tried to go up the tower to get away, where she could defend her position better. In the middle of nowhere, I would have climbed that tower and kept anyone else from coming up. Such a sad case.

I've wondered if she saw something she shouldn't have - or someone thought she did.
Someone did something shady in the surrounding forest, they're paranoid, looking around and see a moving glint from the fire tower (binoculars/etc) which they weren't aware was occupied before.
Regardless of whether or not she actually saw something, this hypothetical perpetrator now believes they may have been witnessed by whoever is in that fire tower.

To me it seems like the person who did it was potentially boiling the water. Maybe they were trying to clean up the blood that was found and were interrupted when the calls started coming in so they booked it out of there and left the water boiling. The assumption was that it was Stephanie but with how quickly someone came to check on her, she would have had to have been attacked and moved in a really short time frame.

Did I miss hearing you say they sent tracking dogs in? If not, why not? This would have seemed obvious to me at the beginning to track her. Also, the pot of boiling water may have thrown people off. What if she was attacked in the nighttime - he would have plenty of time to take care of things then. She was most likely wrapped up in the comforter and the pillows were soiled and taken away. The killer then could have thought he could come back and take some time there boiling water for breakfast and only when he heard and answered the phone he knew he had to take off quick, leaving it.

I have long wondered if Stephanie was attacked the evening or night before, stayed at the tower, and was making their own breakfast in the morning. The phone calls alerted the killer, who then took the bedspread & pillows to use later for their own use. If this is what happened, she might not have been targeted, but was there when her attacker chose the tower for refuge. There's no doubt in my mind Stephanie was killed.

It’s easy in Canada to drive HOURS without any sign of civilization so in that area it’s definitely close. I’m still not sure about the pot of water if I believe it could be her preparing breakfast or someone using it to clean up and heard a vehicle coming and left

Boiling water yet bedding missing... And they think she may have wanted toooo..🤷🏽‍♀️ and they also came to HoRrIfYiNg conclusion she was attacked by an animal.. With NO EVIDENCE of ripped clothing, human flesh, body parts, her hair? They discounted foul play by a human because they saw scat but nothing of _her_ Awful triage. How many unsolved Canadian park cases are there?
Was she on good terms with supervisor? Where were supervisor's whereabouts from 9pm the night before till..dawn? Who's the fire spotter who went to check on her and where was he during the night? Wasn't it a far way to get where she's at? Was this fire spotter _tight with the boss_ HOW PRIME WAS HER SPOT? Location location location. How many towers were in need of a spotter? NONE? This the kind of job that people say *unless they get hit by a bus don't expect for there to ever be an opening*
All of their efforts to make it safe SHOULD'VE ALREADY BEEN ESTABLISHED. How do you have spotters so isolated for decades, yet have *NONE of those safety and security measures in place*

    • @wordivore
      @wordivore 3 месяца назад +1

They didn't land on animal attack in the end. It was considered then investigated further, then decided against. Regarding the part of your comment questioning why safety measures weren't put in place; lack of prevention happens all the time. It's part of the way humans and bureaucracy works unfortunately. It costs a lot of money to do what maybe should've already been done. So that would be one reason.

The Investigators in this province are incompetent. It’s not uncommon for them to wait years to appeal to the public for help, which is ridiculous. The RCMP waste so much time and are useless. Tbh the police in Alberta are lazy and should reach out to Netizens immediately. They would do a better job than them.
