  • It doesn’t get much better than the 1966 D100 Versatile Tractor. 1966 was the first year the Canadian Company Versatile started building its famous four wheel drive articulated tractors. In the first year only about 125 gas and diesel tractor were built and in 1967 they expanded production to over 1,000. The D100 has a 6 cylinder, 100 horse power Ford Industrial Diesel Engine with 12 speed transmission and weighs in at 14,500 pounds! Versatile was one of the first companies to mass-produce the articulated 4WD tractor. The D100 and G100 tractors became extremely popular with their $10,000 price tag, about one third of the cost of similar models made by other tractor manufacturers like John Deere and International Harvester. At one time the company controlled 70% of the 4WD tractor market. We hope you enjoy this story about a 1966 D100 Versatile owned by a collector in North Dakota!

To me,restoring these tractors to original status is very important to show future generations what these antiques looked like when new from the factory.

There's two types of people in this world: those who call em Versatiles and those who call em Versatiles.

The later Versatile tractors used a Twin Disc Power Shift Transmission. I retired from Twin Disc. I was at a Twin Disc 20 year banquet. I sat with an old engineer that worked on the project. It was a good story. He told me how Twin Disc got a Versatile tractor designed the transmission around the needs of the tractor. Brought a Versatile representative in and sold the Twin Disc concept to Versatile.

I think the guy had Versatile confused with Steiger. Steiger used the twin disc, I don't think Versatile ever did, until maybe the Ford New Holland days

@@RJ1999x In the late 1960's before I started working at Twin Disc. He told us the story of the entire project. Twin Disc also made the early transmissions for Big Bud.

@@kevinbissett293 I guess it's possible, but I never seen a powershift transmission in a Versatile until the designation 6 tractor. He might be referring to the 1150 which had a power shift when it was introduced

@@RJ1999xno, Versatile and Steiger both used the TD. It was rare on Versatiles but it was used.

An excellent example of Canadiana history right there. Great to see that it was originally taken good care of and that the new owners are doing the same. Great vid!!

Have used rigid frame and articulated 4 wheel drive tractors, the discussion of which is better is foolish, both have times when it's better for the situation, and personal preference
