The technical upgrades sound fantastic, but think a RenaultSport 5 somewhere in between, with the mechanicals and wider track but style and simplicity is what it should really be. Fantastic review Jonny, and I am so pleased that you 'get' RenaultSport, which is all about the chassis & suspension. The car looks stunning, I wish I could afford one as my daily driver to compliment my A110. As it is I'll have to keep going with the 12 year old VW Up!
Serious question: I have been seeing a trend of the smaller the battery the slower the charging speed. 50KWh batteries seldom get charging over 100kw. I have been dabbling in EVs since 2013 and apart from slightly thicker cables and different controller these cars could get 125 to 150 kw without much mark up. My thoughts are because of the smaller battery you need to charge more often so you want to reduce that time. Maybe I am missing something though… Our Jeep Appendage (I daren’t call it an Avenger) has the same set up 11KW AC and 100 KW DC.
That's just a limitation of the technology. If you have a bigger battery each cell charges slower, so you can pump up the speed. It's the same reason why you can't charge your phone at 100KW
As a petrolhead I just cant get excited about EVs. That footage of the 0-60 was depressing. EV is great as a means of transport, but not as an interest/passion. Maybe as the technology changes, that may change, but at the moment I cant imagine people in years to come going to car shows to look at a bunch of cars powered by essentially the same battery/electric motor. 😢
Thing about EV technology changing is it really won’t. To get more range= bigger heavier batteries. Which in turn means =bigger tyres=bigger wheels=bigger car overall =bloody pricey. EV pish
@@RonnieCurrie-ze1trI understand personal preference but don’t flat out lie or be that stupid. The battery technology and motors etc are continuously improving. Do you even understand battery technology improvements, literally new battery chemistry developments are made every few months or so. We continue to improve battery density to weight ratio. Battery’s are getting lighter and with more range. Ev’s are becoming more affordable gradually as manufacturers settle into making evs’s efficiently in the production process etc. dacia ev is £14,000 starting price, that would have been unheard of just 5 years ago. Obviously improvements are being made.
@@sickbozzer for an ultra car enthusiast maybe. People move on. I personally enjoy my lower maintenance costs, fewer moving parts, quiet relaxing drive(i can quietly whisper to talk to others in my car while doing 70mph on the motorway), easy driving allowing even more focus to be on the road ahead, cheaper ‘refueling costs’ (I charge at a destination charger at a local train station for £14 to fully charge and that lasts me dead on 2 weeks). I enjoy the acceleration with instant power no lags from gear changes etc). I enjoy the additional cabin space due to no transmission tunnel or massive engine up front and less body overhangs (even easier to park) and I also enjoy the fact that due to the battery being under the floor of the car it results in lower centre of gravity making the car far less likely to roll over in a crash etc.

I drive an A110 - this is interesting but honestly I really like the normal 5 and actually prefer both the interior and exterior design. Don't really need a quick EV to go alongside a quick ICE.
Well.. as a 5-person car of frankly decent size (it beats A110 in size) its about as heavy as a Porsche Cayman. I would say that makes it pretty light. Especially if you then consider its an EV. I'm sure there is room to shave some off so that would be a future spec version perhaps. I hoped for a bit lighter but am not disappointed.
Lol by making heavy big sole less EVs hot hatches . they lost there mojo you mean. The electric normal 5 I understand but the sporty one needs a combustion engine. Alpine stands for lightweight 1500kg isn’t lightweight

Exactly!, that huge wheel only makes the range go down to the sink!. Not to mention the cost of the tyres. It looks bad as well. A 17 should be the max imo
Looks great & great overview Johnny
Tbh, with Chris Harris gone a bit quiet, Jonny's the best thing on our screens. He's so perky and animated and so bloody passionate about cars.
That's a big compliment to hear (even though I'm not I can compete with Monkey!)
@@TheLateBrakeShow to be honest Jonny, no one actually can compete with you.
From pulling an old car out of a barn and trying to start it, taking us on a journey of building out a country lane/byway car (and competing) to making beautiful presentations of new cars like the EV.
You are the best thing in car entertainment!
THANK YOU
10:20 yes, very important details.
Also good to see all those Alpine wheels are asymetrical!!
Sorry but the X lights just remind me of Family Fortunes. (Insert wrong answer sound)
‘Our survey said…..’
Love it, great review as usual
It's not a GT turbo without a small turbo charged petrol engine. They're just riding on the glory of a real car.
Great review… I own a lot of Renault Sport cars, even a 5 Turbo2… Unfortunately I rather drive my old cars to infinity and beyond then pay so much for the EV. Sorry Alpine…
I feel you same here as a renault 5 gt turbo owner 👍👌 well said
I would love a manual petrol version with the A110 engine, especially as the GR Corolla won't come to the UK.
There's only two little problems with it. I'll agree with you.
I liked when you said the lights are x-cellent 👍
0-26 seconds in this vt was great - I was certain that it would have a 2 litre turbo or 3.6 v6 then you said those dreaded words "electric" - such an opportunity missed
Really like that! Another great vid Jonny 👍
Love you Jonny but not interested in EV, not for me sadly ,love the barn finds an old classics 👍
I agree with you Jonny. I like that the Alpine version exists, but I’d have the R5.
At first glance it looks lovely, but after 20 minutes all I'm seeing is an SUV with massive wheels and a really high waistline.
What you on about, it's smaller than a clio.
Thought the same...like the 'fat' Fiat 500
Fantastic review Jonny, and I am so pleased that you 'get' RenaultSport, which is all about the chassis & suspension. The car looks stunning, I wish I could afford one as my daily driver to compliment my A110. As it is I'll have to keep going with the 12 year old VW Up!
Looks more like a Range Rover than Renault 5 GT Turbo 0:53
It's way too tall and big
Love this. This is definitely going to draw a lot of interest away from MINI.
Who’s gonna be the first to make a real petrol turbo this thing deserves…probably Jamie shaw
Serious question: I have been seeing a trend of the smaller the battery the slower the charging speed. 50KWh batteries seldom get charging over 100kw.
I have been dabbling in EVs since
2013 and apart from slightly thicker cables and different controller these cars could get 125 to 150 kw without much mark up.
My thoughts are because of the smaller battery you need to charge more often so you want to reduce that time.
Maybe I am missing something though…
Our Jeep Appendage (I daren’t call it an Avenger) has the same set up 11KW AC and 100 KW DC.
@@o0alias0oeh evs are still boring
I’m a biker, petrol head and I was quite negative when my wife leased an i3. However, regen braking is like a bike engine braking and it’s like a go kart for 4 people. I drive it like I stole it most of the time and it’s fun, grippy to a point, rear wheel drive, and so easy to thread around a city where I live, I really like it. For local driving it’s ace. Try one
Good video as always. Disappointed it's FWD. What a missed opportunity - or are they going to do a mad Turbo version with the motor in the back? That would be cool and easy to do
Look at the size of it! An EV Alpine makes as much sense as an EV G Wagen
I drive an A110 - this is interesting but honestly I really like the normal 5 and actually prefer both the interior and exterior design. Don't really need a quick EV to go alongside a quick ICE.
No thanks
I was hooked until mention of £37k was made.
I think the vanilla R5 makes more sense.
And they’ve instantly gone against what made the A110 great. This thing is far from lightweight.
Well.. as a 5-person car of frankly decent size (it beats A110 in size) its about as heavy as a Porsche Cayman. I would say that makes it pretty light. Especially if you then consider its an EV. I'm sure there is room to shave some off so that would be a future spec version perhaps. I hoped for a bit lighter but am not disappointed.
Renault and Alpine are getting their mojo back, great to see.
Lol by making heavy big sole less EVs hot hatches . they lost there mojo you mean. The electric normal 5 I understand but the sporty one needs a combustion engine. Alpine stands for lightweight 1500kg isn’t lightweight
Looks wicked but needs more power and a bigger battery to be worth considering. Maybe a bigger spoiler on the back too
It's got all the power you need for everyday use
@@olliet2977 not when coming from a quicker EV. I'm waiting for the Dual motor one and hoping it's 400BHP+
