    Regarding Kumiko's asking everyone about how they feel about competitions, it has a secondary benefit as well. It gives her a clear understanding of how each person thinks.
    She's no longer relying on looking at body language, or half-spoken thoughts, but she's getting straight to the heart of how they feel.
    This can also be extrapolated out to various other interactions, thus giving her insight into everyone's thinking that she otherwise simply wouldn't have.

    The beginning of Episode 6 did something fun I noticed immediately, back when I first watched it in 2016.
    Usually, an episode begins with a recap of the previous episode while the intro to the OP music plays over it, eventually cutting to the initial black and white OP animation when those bombastic staccato notes start playing. And normally, the OP would remain in black and white during the verse as the OP depicts the various characters practicing, doing school work, and goofing off, with a sudden surge of color when the chorus begins and the OP starts depicting the characters actually playing on a concert stage. It's like the passion of music and competition spices up these characters lives so intensely that everything else almost feels monotonous in comparison.
    In Episode 6, the recap ends with Kitauji being selected to go to nationals and when OP proper begins, it's already in color, as if simply having the chance to compete at a national level makes everything in their life seem all the more vibrant. The black and white of earlier iterations of the OP reigned in the emotions of the music and animation, but clearly it was to delay the sheer joy and enthusiasm that this now-colored OP evokes.

    Since I’m not so musically adept, I really appreciate your commentary on the performance side of things! Thanks for the shout out also! I’m glad I can contribute even a bit to your excellent discussion.
    I want continue off from my previous comment: the interpersonal aspect of individual growth. Season 1 was about “Why do you play?.” This season asks the question, “Who do you play for?” (Credit to Under the Scope’s Hibike YT video entitled, “How Warm it Sounds,” for these ideas. A must-watch for anyone after finishing Season 2.)
    In this episode we see the latter question in the following:
    - Mizore plays for Nozomi
    - Reina plays for Kumiko (though as you said, how serious she means it is unclear)
    - Hazuki asks Kumiko and Reina to play for her and Team Monaka (to inspire them)
    - Taki plays/conducts for his late wife
    - Mamiko stops playing for her parents
    I’m not a musician, but I’m of the camp who believes that one’s full potential in anything we do is realized once we’ve found the balance between “playing for ourselves,” and “playing for others.”
    While Mizore still says she plays for Nozomi, I believe that her performance and more positive demeanor implies that she is starting to (re)discover her personal passion for music. She’s not fully there yet, but I think she’s on her way to having a healthier relationship with music.
    Meanwhile, I see Reina as opposite of Mizore here. In season 1, she was more focused on herself. Anyone who got in her way be damned. But overtime she’s starting to learn more how to play with and for others, without letting go of her drive to become special. I don’t know if she’s becoming a better or worse musician, but I think she’s becoming a more complete, balanced person.

      Really like how you pointed out all the different types of 'playing for' that's going on with the characters. Makes me wonder who Asuka plays for (or wants to stop playing for)..
      Great point: re finding the right balance between 'playing for ourselves' and 'playing for others'. I think my personal bias (at least in music) tilts towards 'playing for ourselves' because my experience was more heavily focused on solo performance and music exams, as opposed to orchestra/band/group performances, so Hibike is giving me a fresh perspective on that balance too 😄
      Also I really hope Mizore's well on her way to enjoying music for its own sake as opposed to for Nozomi - it makes sense that that discovery wouldn't happen overnight, but slowly over time. And spot on about Reina!

      @@ravenclawreacts You can even expand the scope further from music as the themes of the show reflect the larger group vs individual conflicts that are present many collectivist cultures and societies like Japan.

    I just realized that the song they're playing at the beginning is an arrangement of Kimi wa Tennenshoku, a song from the 80s by Eiichi Ohtaki. More recently it was used as the ending to the anime Kakushigoto, which is why I didn't recognize it when originally watching through Hibike as I first heard it as that anime's ending which came out later. You still have 3 more videos to finish this season (maybe 4 as there's actually 13 episodes not 12, unless you do a 3 episode reaction), plus Liz and the Blue Bird, Chiaki no Finale, and the more recent OVA. I'm not sure if Liz and the Blue Bird will be strictly necessary for the third season (though it's so good that it should be watched as soon as possible imo) but the other two things are. So that's another 2 videos (3 including Liz), so 6 more Hibike videos in a few months before season 3 :^).

    Happy new year! Good to be back with Hibike.
    Just some scattered thoughts on these two episodes:
    - Ep 5 does a great job conveying the anxiety and tension of the day of the performance. I’ve never been in a music competition but I felt so nervous with them before and during the performance.
    - Akito Matsuda really knocked it out of the park with the soundtrack for this show, not just with the background score, but also the anime-original Crescent Moon Dance. It’s full of moments that allow the individual instruments of the wind ensemble to shine, and very fitting for the narrative. So glad we got the full 8-minute piece fully animated without any voiceovers. Hibike has ruined a lot of other music anime for me because almost nothing comes close to the quality of performance scenes that Hibike has.
    - Honestly unsure if there’s an in-universe explanation for Reina not sounding as good as she did in the audition (too distracted thinking about her girlfriend Kumiko?) or if I should just chalk it up to the professional trumpeter KyoAni got for S1 not being available this time around.
    - The girl playing the cymbals is Junna Inoue. Her popularity went through the roof this year (judging by the amount of fan art on twitter) since she became a semi-prominent character in the OVA that came out in August.
    - Love that Michie-sensei was crying after the announcement that Kitauji was moving on. Such a small moment, but shows how much she cares despite her super-stern facade.
    - First half of ep 6 is relatively light and fluffy, which is a nice reprise from the heavy drama of the last few episodes. The school festival felt very K-On-esque. Asuka kills it as a witch. Natsuki is an amazing troll.
    - We learn more about Taki’s personal motivation, i.e. to fulfill his wife’s dream of leading Kitauji to gold at nationals. Yet at the start of the year, he gives everyone a choice whether to play just for fun or get serious about going to Nationals. I wonder if he was truly fine with either option, or if he knew that going for gold would almost certainly win when framed that way and put to a public vote. It’s similar to the trumpet audition, where Taki probably knew Kaori would have too good of a conscious to accept the solo part after such a direct comparison to Reina. I suspect he intentionally constructs situations where the outcome is fairly obvious but still gives students the illusion of choice. That’s not to say I think he’s unfairly manipulating his students, but I think he’s more cunning than he appears. He’s a very well-developed character and I wish I could same the same about the other male characters (cough cough Shuuichi).
    - Mamiko and Kumiko have a very realistic sibling dynamic. As much as we all want to have what Yui and Ui have, I think Mamiko and Kumiko’s relationship is probably more relatable, especially to those with strict parents.
    Also, don’t worry about finishing everything before S3 starts. Enjoyment of art shouldn’t be rushed :)

    • @ravenclawreacts
      @ravenclawreacts  5 месяцев назад

      aye always appreciate these scattered thoughts! And thank you for the assurance of not needing to rush ☺
      I have been in music competitions and the all the little interactions and build up was TOO realistic for comfort haha.
      Count me not surprised that cymbal girl became super popular! Tbh just the way she clashed those cymbals was a worthy moment for converting into a fan.
      Also, great points made about Taki - giving the students an 'illusion of choice' is an apt way to describe it. I'll have to give Taki more sly points than I initially did.

    Thanks for the comment shoutout, RC. Glad you're back again, I guess we can wait for season 3 after the movie reactions.
    They did use amateurs for most of the ensemble performances with soloists for the key parts - the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.
    As for Reina sounding different, in season 1 it was a professional trumpeter doing Reina's parts, but in season 2 her part was performed by one of the students (I believe this was in the production notes).
    I believe Mizore's parts were played by a professional in season 2.
    Now that the performance is out of the way - check out this short recording of Crescent Moon Dance by the above school on KyoAni's channel that they used for key animation of the instruments - I think they did exaggerate the shoulder and head movements a little more.

      While Reina's solo was different in this episode, I thought that overall the performance was noticeably stronger, particularly the closing section which they knocked out of the park. Asuka's and Mizore's solos were also very good as well.

    Regarding S2E5's performance, I believe they got a different band playing it compared to S1E13 - if I recall correctly it was something like S1 it was a professional band, while S2 it was a college band, which while still good, falls short comparatively. It may have been budget, mismatched schedule or that it was done deliberately with less of a focus on Reina being the ace showing in her and Kaori's audition and culminating in her solo at the season's end (keeping in mind that auditions + trumpet solo was a major arc after all), with S2's performance more on the overall band, and a conclusion to Mizore's arc - if you go back to S1E13's performance, the bits they cut out most prominently were Mizore's sections. Speaking of a conclusion to Mizore's arc, given Nozomi largely was the instigator for the arc starting up in the first place, it was very fitting that in the concluding episode to the arc, she is the one opening the curtain for the band to enter the stage.
    Also while I'm not sure if you'll end up watching it since it's largely a recap movie (but has a decent amount of new/extended scenes), the S2 movie contains the first song (the required piece Wind of Provence) in full.

      afaik The pro player was only on the solo audition, and the music college band plays all the ensemble pieces. I don't know specifically about the personnel of the band, there may have been changes a year later for S2's recording, but it's funny that the player for Kaori's audition is likely the one who actually plays in the group.

      There never was a professional band in s1, but they had a professional musician playing Reina's solo, since it was a particularly important plot point. That wasn't the case for s2, and AFAIK everything was handeled by the same college band of s1.

    Winds of Provence was played in full in the S1 finale, so they skipped it here in favor of a full performance of Crescent Moon Dance. For a little extra punch, the Polovtsian Dances that the previous band played is the same piece that triggered Mizore back in episode 2. If things had gone as Asuka planned, Mizore would have been shaken up backstage right before their performance!
    There were some slight changes in the OP and ED at episode 6. And Kyoani does school festivals like no one else. The 2 songs they play for it are Kimi wa Tenneniro and Gakuen Tengoku, a couple of 80s and 70s hits.

    I agree that generally in real life someone struggling with their emotions often emotes even more in their music.
    Watch Nirvana's MTV unplugged performance of Leadbelly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night and tell me Curt wasn't pouring his suffering into that performance. Listen to Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, and tell me you can't detect all the emotions balled up in that performance.
    If you can't detect the emotion in those performances, I think you might be a robot.
    That said, the whole "so emotionally distraught they can't play properly" is absolutely a trope in music anime, so as a longtime anime viewer that's not unexpected at all, and fairly easily forgiven.

  • @Bobbias
    @Bobbias 5 месяцев назад

    Regarding Asuka's way of handling things: i feel like you generally have a good analysis on her overall personality, but something you might have overlooked about her decision is how it affects those not directly involved.
    Her decision was effectively "don't rock the boat". It's a very collectivist approach to dealing with the problem: instead of confronting the core problem, she recognizes that by keeping the status quo, she ensures that nothing will jeapordize the work everyone else has put in so far, regardless of the outcome for Nozomi and Mizore.
    She's protecting the band from the potential fallout. I think she may recognize that it's not a great solution for either of the girls, but it *is* an effective solution for the band as a whole.

    I was wondering, is Taki Sensei's motive to reach national that different from Mizore's motive to stay in band? They both seem to stem from the same sentiment of wanting to fulfill your lost dear one's dream. Of course, it doesn't mean that it will be forever their only reason, Mizore already discovered that she's enjoying band for music's sake and not just as a means to be by Nozomi's side. I'm pretty sure Taki Sensei is also taken by his job for he's own sake now, he seemed so when he talked to Kumiko when she forgot her phone.

    • @ravenclawreacts
      @ravenclawreacts  5 месяцев назад

      HMM intriguing comparison there. It IS similar in that they were both initially motivated by the memory or loss of someone they deeply care about and who inspired them to pursue music - and then both discovered that they loved what they did for its own sake. The interactions in these episodes just gave me like... pause? I thought Mizore HAD learned the lesson, but here it seems she's very much back in a state of over-dependency on Nozomi that feels... weird. I'm probably reading too much into things though 😆 and I'm sure Liz and the Blue Bird will answer some of these questions.

    • @sapinta
      @sapinta 5 месяцев назад

      @@ravenclawreacts i mean, the fact that Mizore is now enjoying music for herself, does not have to mean that she's over her dependance (over-attachment? Obsession? Love?) on Nozomi. She's now a bit more confident that Nozomi is not oblivious towards her, and that there are other people around her that likes her (Yuuko ftw!), but she's not suddenly becoming a completely different person, a confident, independent one, and socially apt. That would just be horrendous writing. She might even be in a slightly worse place now than she was before, I think, since she just "got Nozomi back" she must be terrified of losing her again for whatever reason, and super alert. It takes time to adjust to normal after a reconciliation. Unless you're Nozomi. She is so friendly and easy-going, isn't she?
