The problem is, when using levels to adjust the face, often it has the undesired effect to the hair. What you need to do is separate the hair from the face. So you want to duplicate the face layer, and remove the face [Mask away] from one and the hair from the other. Then with your single hair layer, you can tweak the levels, and create the high contrast onto of your colour layer. That has worked for me with dark hair instances.
Awesome tutorial! Andy Worhol is also one of Gaga's biggest inspirations when she created her 'Lady Gaga' image plus, her new album is called ARTPOP (an Artistic Revolution Through the Potential Of Pop) and plays on the idea of Pop Art and that anything in pop culture can be turned into art.
Hello from Maryland, Mr. TastyTuts. Thanks very very much for putting this together. This is a terrific presentation. I combed through many other Warhol/screen print videos and various techniques via PhotoShop and found this to be the best by far. I really appreciate your time and effort in sharing this.
First of all: Perfect tutorial! Good demo material - excellent result - professionally explained. I watched many other tutorials resulting in "wanna-be"-Warholish trash. This one leads you right to the point - I was able to create a fantastic Warhol Style Pop-Art picture 50x50cm that exceeded all what I had expected to be ever able to create myself in reasonable time. Thanks a lot! To some critical comments below: Certainly I used Masks, adjustment Layers for the Levels, adjustment Layers for the hue - separate for each color layer - to have maximum control over the resulting colored composition. I user groups and many more. And i am absolutely sure, the author also knows all these techniques - probably much better than I do myself! BUT: This all is not subject of the tutorial! In my opinion, one part of the excellent Job the author did was to NOT use all this techniques in the tutorial because this makes it unnecessarily complicated and obscures the view to the vital parts of the process to create a realistic and professional Warhol-Style Pop-Art picture! If you can do it right at the first try, applying the level for example to the original picture is fine (as shown in teh tutorial). I HAVE to use an adjustment layer since I do not get it right the first time and have to adjust and adapt later. My final words: Thank you a lot for the tutorial - you did a great job sharing your skill with the rest of the world!
I absolutely love this tutorial! Very clear cut instructions and easy to follow step by steps make for a very happy designer such as myself. Thank you!
Really enjoyed tutorial, helped alot! Will definitely be watching more - esp with the voice and accent. Informative AND a great voice.... so rare on RUclips :)
Lovely, as I have a major project of designing some Pop Art panels for an upcoming event. I have done this before, but this was a great refresher. I would have liked to see one done with someone with dark hair however, as the effect with dark hair is not quite as intense or cool looking, and I would have liked to see your take on that. Thank you.
i COMPLETELY agree with you...its always better to use a non-destructive approach. He also shouldve attempted to use the curves adjustment layer. It wouldve really worked better for controlling the balance of black and white in the desaturated image instead of doing it in portions with the levels adjustment layer.
Thank you for your comment. Although I understand using adjustment layers and layer masks is better practise, I don’t belive its necessarily imperative, especially on a simple task such as this. Tho, your point is noted, when I create tuts like it in future, I will be using adjustment layers. Thank you.
Just a recommendation instead of using new layers for each color use a solid color adjustment layer and that way you can easily change the color after. Also I would recommend using layer mask as they are easier to use, nevertheless great tutorial!
@fookthetoothfairy you could consider creating a duplicate layer... In the tutorial I tweaked the levels to get the desired effect. Sometimes you cannot get the desired effect on one layer, for example the face might be perfect but then that leaves the hair to dark, or too light. So in the tutorial I duplicated the layer to have two instances where I tweaked the levels. This meant I could treat each layer separately, then simply delete to reveal the layer with the effect I was happy with. :)
OMG . thanks so much!!!! you are so helpful Although i did get stuck in the middle, i was on the foreground layer trying to erase some of the color then a message pop out "you cannot do......because the selected layer is hidden" then i went online and discovered that i have to SELECT the very layer. I'm a newbie to photoshop. and i hope people had the same problem as i did could find this feedback helpful thanks again!
HI THERE. The tuitorials are really very good. I learned so much. One question. I struggle with the blue eyeshadow. Everytime i press the Miltiply button, the blue goes some sort of grey. I try to follow the steps carefully. I have no idea what i do wrong.
You can try changing your hair colour? I've done the same effect with pictures of Gaga with her natural brunette hair, blonde hair and her new brunette hair and they both turned out fine :)
This is so great. My big question is what happens if I'm doing a portrait with different colour hair such as brunette or black hair? That's the trouble because it doesn't work very well.
@TeamForceCentral Hi, I tried to find the source online for the original image, but could not find it, so I have uploaded it myself and put the link in the description. Hope that helps.
Some of these tutorials sometimes are not meant for beginners. Maybe you should go and start creating color boxes on PS first and learning how each function works.
When I reached on colouring the face (09:16), photoshop doesn't let me use the brush :/ it says "COULD NOT USE THE HISTORY BRUSH BECAUSE THE CURRENT COLOR MODE DOES NOT MATCH THAT OF THE HISTORY STATE" What should I do?? Thanks for your help!
WOW your accent is so beautiful. *.* The tutorial is so amazing I´m totally gonna try it out for sure. :) It´s kinda hard working with dark brown hair color though. :|
About 1:15 in, you stated: "...and grab that original image of Lady Gaga". How did you grab Lady Gaga? I've trued cut and paste, drag and drop, commandJ... nata...
If you were to add mutiply to the hair and face image and paint on layers beneath this you can cut out a lot of the selection and masking stages of this video. Good tutorial though.
i dont see the point personally if you're doing warhol. It's not like your editing a photo you're really just painting over it, if you erase the paint simply we draw it. no biggie
My professor used your video to teach us this instead of teaching it himself, thank you, it made class go by way faster
What school do you go to
same fam
LowCLass Villan so sorry didn't even see this until now. University of North Georgia was where I was attending
oh hi there
@@HazyHippie, just writing this here to see in how many years you will see this comment.
A mio avviso questo metodo è sicuramente quello il cui risultato si avvicina di più a quello originale di Warhol. Bravo!

the description is very clear , thank you very much!! This is the most accurate way to work the Warhol style I 've learnt.

Fantastico!
Thank you for the clear tutorial video. (: I'll work on mine soon.
This is so great. My big question is what happens if I'm doing a portrait with different colour hair such as brunette or black hair? That's the trouble because it doesn't work very well.
great tutorial:) keep up the good work!
AMAZING
you sound to me like a professor :), love your lexicon :)
@TeamForceCentral Hi, I tried to find the source online for the original image, but could not find it, so I have uploaded it myself and put the link in the description. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much .... I hope you can make a male version later :)
@TastyTuts i think he meant dark hair in the original picture, any way to avoid just having a plain black area as the hair in this case?
Amazing thank you so much for this..: )
Awesome
Intrestin tutorial thanku
what should i do if the hair is dark? i do the same thing with the contrast and leave it all black?
Some of these tutorials sometimes are not meant for beginners. Maybe you should go and start creating color boxes on PS first and learning how each function works.
thanks mate it worked
Have you changed from Grayscale to RGB colour?
Thank you man.
how did you get the color reference page ?
Hi. Is it possible to make this one in photoshop cs3?
Yes, I have CS6 and everything is the same. Instead of the Flatten dialog you will get a merge dialog, simply click "Don't Merge".
do you know if his work was representational? my professor assigned a paper about him and I can't figure it out.
When I reached on colouring the face (09:16), photoshop doesn't let me use the brush :/ it says "COULD NOT USE THE HISTORY BRUSH BECAUSE THE CURRENT COLOR MODE DOES NOT MATCH THAT OF THE HISTORY STATE"
What should I do?? Thanks for your help!
@WubbaWubba288 thats CTRL+T then after resizing press enter
The process probably could've been a lot shorter if you used clipping masks instead.
can you make this with dark colored hair?
WOW your accent is so beautiful. *.* The tutorial is so amazing I´m totally gonna try it out for sure. :) It´s kinda hard working with dark brown hair color though. :|
1:26 Where do you get that tool I can't find it
command + t

Can you provide the color codes you used?
Were doin this in school :)
Will this tutorial work for a brunette or black haired person?
Wouldn't using layer masks be easier/safer?
i dont see the point personally if you're doing warhol. It's not like your editing a photo you're really just painting over it, if you erase the paint simply we draw it. no biggie
ooooh, thank you dear so much! :))
cool
Where can i find the original photo
Good
what did he do in 10:54 minutes?

WoW
Dat intro :3
now its ART POP
Are you welsh?
@TastyTuts Thank you for replying so fast. :)
probably this would work on all photoshop versions above cs2...
i laughed when the video started. :))))
when i select all layer it become red.:( hlp pls
Lady Gah Gah!
tasty tuts?
It's called hair, not haaae :)
For instance, a very good guide! +1
I want to do in pop art picture, but i dont have computer at the moment
I guess this doesn't work, where the person has dark hair. I followed everything in this video, but mine didn't turn out like that.
In future could you please provide hex codes? :D
why not just put the orange background behind the layers... just seems like wasted time to manually delete everything when you could just mask it out
I thought the same
That's what I thought too
PsychItsMike that depends on the imagine your using man , you would have to separate image from background select w magic wand otherwise , like duh
think you (:
ARTPOP.
