  • The Commonwealth War Graves at Jawatte, Colombo, is one of eight cemeteries in Sri Lanka in which men and women of the Commonwealth who died during the first and the second world war and qualify for commemoration according to the criteria of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are commemorated. It is the largest of the commonwealth war cemeteries in Sri Lanka and located at Torrington Avenue, Colombo, inside the civilian (municipal) cemetery in the rear left corner.
The footage filmed, the script written and the video edited by Leonard Jayawardena.
Viewing the video on a large screen is recommended as the inscriptions on the headstones and memorials are clearly visible only on large screens (such as a computer monitor).
Correction: At 8:35 the narration says that on each headstone is engraved, inter alia, the date of death of the deceased and the age at death beside it. Actually, a small number of headstones do not record the age at death.
My thanks to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for permission to use a number of photographs from their website, which is also the source for some of the content of the video narration. Thanks are also due the Media division of the CWGC for their kind help in providing information and clarifications during the process of making this video. Their web address: www.cwgc.org/
Cameras used: GoPro Hero 9 and Canon EOS 70D.
Narration by an AI-powered voice provided by Microsoft Azure Services.
Music track titled "End of an Era" downloaded from the RUclips Audio Library.

Glad you appreciate it. I did put in a lot of time and labour to make this video, which, however, has not yet been rewarded by the number of views. 😢

      4. War Graves register.
      5. Information gathered from my personal inspection of the cemetery (e.g., the number of headstones in each plot).
The photographs used not relating to the Jawatte cemetery were all in the public domain.
