With goal of a sunset landscape photography shoot, me & a friend tackle one of the most notorious hiking routes in the Lake District National Park: Jack's Rake. The hike is not to be undertaken lightly and does pose a lot of risk to anybody lacking experience in the outdoors, but the photography reward at the end of it was worth every step.

When you were climbing up I was thinking, God, they have to go down. Scary but impressive to watch.
I was thinking exactly the same!!
I was thinking the same
Same
Same.
yup… it’s the return downwards that also came to mind here
Thomas, as I start this video I take comfort in knowing that you've edited and posted it after completing this climb and not fallen to certain death. :D Beautiful stuff!
Haha, that's how I feel when watching various films and documentaries. If you're experienced, it's a safe route :)
Did not stop me from having to fast forward a couple of times 😅
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto You climbed down in the dark?!?!
:O
That sounds scary...?
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto ...and if you remember to tie your shoelaces (: Just received your book and it's awesome!
Having done some risky climbs (not nearly to the scale of that beast) it gave me the willies watching. For some reason, falling 100 yards seem much more comforting than falling a 1000 yards. Even though the results would be the same. :D Perhaps it's the extra time you get to contemplate your life from the extra height.
The enthusiasm is infectious. It is all about the light.
This made shivers run up and down my spine, I could barely watch. I love the way you were so helpful and considerate to your friend as he climbed behind you. The images are spectacular.
Tom, that was your best vlog for ages. More like that please. Your enjoyment and enthusiasm shone through. Brill 👍
Nothing better than hanging on to bare rock, exposed with views to take your breath away. Thanks still waiting for our snow to melt so I can get up and hit as many summits as I can this summer. Sitting here jealous pulling my hair out. I’m so ready!
I am most relieved that this video was not uploaded by the estate of Thomas Heaton! This is true dedication to craft.
Aah, the majestic Langdale Pikes. I absolutely love them...
Well I pretty much crapped myself half a dozen times during the first part of that video, but WOW so worth staying with it , amazing pictures. I really do hope you got back down to the pub in time for a glorious meal and ice cold beer you both definitely deserved it.
I'm too old. I spent the whole hike section muttering to myself "Oh HELLLLL NO" 👀😱 Obviously you made it. I hope no one tries that climb who isn't experienced and fit enough to handle it.
Bro I am young and I was saying hell no.
@@angusmcdonald1223 😂😂 Tom is an experienced rock climber. That was his favorite hobby before he took up photography. It's not for the faint of heart!
Yep, I'd not be trying that!
I imagine that the hike down was worse than the hike up based upon your video going up. One slip and its all over for these adventurous photographers. Keep up the great videos and don't kill yourself doing them.
Quite simply a treat to watch - thanks Thomas and look forward to your next adventure
I just cant help but laugh knowing he has to descend to retrieve the camera at every B-roll ascent 😂 10/10 for effort bro
That way up really makes your heart go
So inspiring and amazing landscape shots! Thanks for the awesome work and thanks for sharing!
You guys are nuts. My heart was in my mouth the whole climb. Heavy bags to destabilize you. Great images. But geeze...
Absolute toe curler Thomas, especially the clips where you're looking back down towards your friend, kept expecting him to tip backwards at any moment. Beautiful images, glad you enjoyed the scramble and got back safely, thanks for taking us along
That bought back some happy memories. Wild camped at Stickle Tart many times. Thank you.
That hike is worth the destination. I don't know if my vertigo would let me do that, so it's good watching you. Loved it
Loved the last image, the climbers make it extra special. No pain no gain lol. I would have spent a bit of time on my bum going back down, intentionally of course. But what a place!!!
Something about your videos is so calming and soothing I love watching your videos.. it makes me want to start hiking and camping again.
This video is just everything to love about the lakes, jacks rake, classic sunset and I hope a stodgy pub meal after! Great video as ever
Wow, what a hike. I'm incredibly jealous, that looks like so much fun. Then the photography too, just wow
You just made my Wednesday night! Fantastic location and route, great rewards and shots at the top and an amazing video documenting and taking us along all the way. Thank you so much! P.S: I already watched it twice😊 Thanks again!
Amazing the lengths you are willing to go for fascinating content.
Love your channel, great job Thomas.
Nah, this is just a fun afternoon out for me. I did think about not filming the climb, but i'm glad i did.
It's nice to hear that you enjoy the channel. Thanks a lot.
Have been watching, enjoying and getting inspiration from Thomas for years - but just have to make my first comment: for me that has to be his masterpiece video - astonishing fast paced portrayal of the excitement, camaraderie and risks of climbing up and gorgeous images at the top. Thanks.
Thanks Thomas, another excellent video that brought back some happy memories.
I used to climb there regularly in my younger days and I last visited two years ago when I spent a night in my tent just off the back of Pike of Stickle.
Man I love to see you hiking and taking photographs.. I'm a hiker and also photographer and I get excited when you post this kind of videos 🤩 it's like I'm living it with you!
A very adventurous adventure this week and really enjoyable. Oh yes, and three fine images - enjoyed 'em all.
Reminds me of the many wonderful scrambles I've done in the Canadian Rockies and also climbing the Matterhorn! (Of course, on the latter I was roped up.) They always look far worse from below than when you're on them. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
The video was scary in parts, hats off to you for putting such a huge effort. The compositions were quite philosophical. ❤️
Crikey! It must be over 30 years since I did that route up Jack's Rake and I can still remember the feeling of relief after getting to the top. I'm not much of a climber and your excellent video has just reminded me why once was enough for me. Fortunately, other routes are available.😁 Great stuff.
Great trip and pictures. By far my favorite. 10:01. Subjective, I know, but there are some imagines that make you feel you are falling un love. 11:53 is a delight too.
Upmost of respect Thomas, many people including myself consider ourselves landscape photographers but only a fraction would put their own safety as such risk to gain “that money shot”! Well done, what an image! Congratulations
Been a subscriber since you were at 40k. So nice to see this channel has grown so much since then. Love your content as always!
Usually I'm happy to watch the presenters take me to places that I would not likely ever go, but this Thomas!!! My butt was clenching my seat so much as you and James traversed the "path" upwards. Thanks for the anxiety rush! Glad you both had a good climb and photo gathering experience. Cheers
Amazing pictures and adventure, thanks for sharing your experiences !
I love those layered gradient shots.
That climb had me gasping! Wonderful photos, Thomas!
Thanks for the vertigo👍
Really lovely video Tom. Felt like winding back the clock 4 years ago and watching one of your early videos. Beautiful photography too.
Wow, respect! The images are beautiful. Thnx.
Mu anxiety spikes like crazy looking the two of you climbing the hellish steep path...
No pain, no gain as they say, but the result, the view is just.. superb!
Nice one Thomas. This reminds me a lot of your original videos from back in the day!!
The 2nd/3rd shot is what I'm loving! The detail and layers are fantastic! The hike looks class also would love to try it
Thanks a lot, i agree with you on the images.
Loved it as usual. Thanks
This is when I typically, upon arriving at the top, discover a paved 40 car parking lot and a multitude of onlookers. Great production, thanks for all of it!
Fantastic episode! Thanks for bringing us along!
Thanks for coming along.
Awesome walk that buddy! Stunning views up there as well. Hope you had a good meal
Really enjoyed this 1 Thomas. stunning location well worth the death defying hike !!
Gorgeous watch
Gorgeous images and that was some scramble - vertigo inducing 😨 glad you enjoyed it and took us along with you 😁
Jeez..... That was one hell of a scramble. Don't think I'd take that one on just because of the length of it. I've done shorter, sketchy stuff, but nothing that long. Like someone else here, I was thinking that I would NOT want to descend that face. Sweet images though. I love the horizon on that shot when you went to the lower ledge at the end. Thanks for taking us along!
Amazing hike and video thank you for documenting.
Ah youth! Then again, there has never been a time in my life that I would have tried that. You’re a better man than I Gunga Din!
Impressive! Certainly one of your most impressive video. Great pictures.
I’ve got vertigo,and I’m lying down watching this…. Fabulous fun 🤩
Brilliant compositions!
Cracking last shot love it📷❤️📷
Tom, a great video as always . It brought back happy memories of my time in the Lakes. I visited the ODG pub years ago - having emigrated to NZ in 1986 I miss a good pint of Thricksons "Old Peculiar". Happy days.
Wow, that is one great video, impressive stuff Mr Heaton your results show that the more you put in the more you get out of your photography. Wonderful images, thanks for sharing.
Wow that was fantastic!! That scramble and the action camera had me on the edge of my seat just like all of Murray's videos do! And some stunning photographs to end it all on as well!! I hope you made it to the pub in time for dinner!!
that image at 12:02 is awesome. really stunning light across that scene, and it's easy to imagine the view those climbers must have had. What a solid hike!
You have definitely triggered my wanderlust 😍
And the wonderful photographs are surely most rewarding for the hard work.
It made me nervous just watching the two of you standing on the ledge. Totally worth the climb I’m sure. Nice warm glow on the mountain side and beautiful views.
Wow Thomas, that exploratory Spirit, truly extraordinary. Be careful up there and great shots.
Looking back down gives me the willies even on the video!
Excellent video and it always looks higher looking down than it does looking up so well done to the both of you 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
You guys were NUTS !!!! GREAT JOB!!
Fantastic adventure from the safety of my recliner! You have my admiration. Very lovely photos also.
So inspiring!
OMG I was freaking out on the climb up and I wasn't even the one doing it! And then you have to do it again in the dark😬
Love the amazing photos especially the light streaming through the haze and the contrasting colours❤️
Enjoyed this thoroughly! You captured the ascent superbly. Loved the final image.
Going back the mountain would have been tough with the diminishing light, hope you guys had plenty of battery in the head lamps.
Can't wait to see the next video.
Heaton…you are out of your mind! What an incredible video…the rewards of being at the summit are breathtaking and so are the compositions. Well done.I bet going down was a thrill…not me! Be safe. Cheers..
Incredible!
Done this in March with the wife and 2 teenage daughters and you made it look a lot easier than I did, although I am scared of heights, beautiful place the langdales and lots of scrambling fun on harrison stickle and pike o stickle. Great video and some lovely shots. Atb.
Thank you. 👍📷😎
I'm glad *you* were doing this Thomas, rather than me,.. I felt positively nauseous just looking at the footage; I can't imagine how I'd have felt if I was there, looking UP from the bottom (because I point-blank refused to climb up).
This looks like an amazing experience, thanks for taking the effort to take multiple cameras, drone etc to share it with us.
Instantly recognisable thumb nail of Loft Crag 👍 the route up Pavey arc is Jack's rake
Fantastic video Thomas and great images to boot, nice to see you enjoying the day so much. John Pouw NZ
Hope the pub was great. Your shots were great, loved the last one in particular. Cheers
Another great video. I think I did that scramble about 30 years ago but watching that video I can’t believe I would have done it!
Nothing more rewarding on a long hike up a steep mountain than a spectacular view! What a cool experience. Hope you made it down in time for food. That meal after a long back country trip always tastes the best! 🤣 Great video!
Hi Thomas! I haven’t been on RUclips for a while, but coming back now, and luckily I have so much to catch up on!!!!!! Love the fresh content mate. With love from Australia!
My stomach was churning watching the scramble up and I was thinking I hope there is an easier way down after sunset. Stunning views and great images, the climb was well worth it!
The climbers you spotted near the end of the video were doing one of the classic Lake Land climbs on Gimmer crag called Kipling Groove, so called because at the time of the first ascent in the late 1940's it was considered "ruddy 'ard'. It is still is a good test. The leader has reached the top , the second is about to climb the pitch with the difficult section.
Cheers.
This episode justified the thumb :-) what a climb Pal and the light rewarded you also
Wonderful images mate , really really nice
Great route up onto the Pikes and love that shot looking to Gimmer Crag - excellent video as always.
That was the action!
Really cool video Thomas.
Crazy steep path though, nothing for faint hearts.
With such a heavy backpack, the walk becomes a Himalayan adventure ah ah!!
Voice break at 6:07! Looks like the mountain was challenging to be honest!! Lovely vid Thomas.
Crazy beautiful
OH MY GOD…. 😳 No freaking way that I could do that, major fear of heights here! Very impressive guys!! Wow, just wow….
Cracking shot across Gimmer Crag , thank you
Can't beat some good old British mountain scrambling, looked like a great trip, Thomas :-)
OMG... I would not do that now, 71 yrs old with camera back pack.. yeah- NO! At your age, Thomas no problem. Looking forward to the shots!
it is sooooooo goooodddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
