Thanks for the shout out Mike! Another reason why leafy greens are so beneficial is their trace mineral content. Your one of my favorite vegan Channels on RUclips. ps. keep on growing!
YES I'm rooting for Mike to grow as well! =) Funny smart and ethical vegan The perfect trifecta indeed! oh and cute. ..and rooting for us all to grow our leafy greens! =)
I agree with just about everything Mic says in his videos. What I wish
he would bring up along with many other famous vegans and doctors are
the importance of the different colors of the fruits and vegetables. The
only person I've ever heard bring this up is David Wolfe though I don't
agree with everything he talks about with other subjects. Each color
represents the different type of medicine so to speak. They also
represent the chakra system. Everyone talks about the importance of
protein, calcium, iron, vitamins, etc but supposedly the colors are the
most important and people should get them in their diet everyday if they
can and a lot of each color. Disease may very well come from a color
deficiency. If you think about it, people for the longest time never
knew the science of protein, health, vitamins, and all they could go by
were the colors in nature. This would be a very interesting topic to
bring up and I hope it's talked about by Mic and other people at some
point.
I will admit though that Mic has brought up how important greens are which is good. Green is probably the most important color since it's the heart chakra in the Zen philosophy and balances the rest since it is right in the middle. With this whole color thing, it makes you look at everything differently regarding health and the problem is that it's not a studied enough topic to come up with any radical conclusions since nobody talks about it. If disease and cancer has to do with a color deficiency of a certain color or many colors, I wonder if the science of health is overrated or a complete lie since maybe all you need to do is get all the colors of the fruits and veggies in everyday. Obviously you can't eat meat, dairy, or processed food but even if you did, I wonder if people would see as much disease if they were getting in all the colors everyday and in great amounts. I wonder if raw vegans who fail on their diets would've been successful if they got all the colors in everyday. If you lived thousands of years ago it wouldn't be fair that you couldn't get chia seeds for their omega 3s for instance since it wouldn't be available in the region but it would make more sense in this way if color was and is more important and therefore easier to obtain since colors come in a variety of different fruits and veggies and are in most regions. There are a lot of unanswered questions regarding all of this and I expect that most don't have the answers but I would still like to hear thoughts and opinions and hopefully a video from Mic.
Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens Mike is the "vegan encyclopedia"...lol. Amazing info, humorfied!!!! 😁👏
I used to not eat greens before I went vegan, I would get a bruise almost every day with no known cause. 1 handfull of spinach a day stopped this within a week. Greens are very important!
Greens are the healthiest food :)
+Scynable doesnt taste disgusting.. they hardly taste like anything at all.
same
***** that's a bit extreme, pretty sure a handfull of spinach a day won't give you kidney stones
Scynable boil the spinach for a bit if you're worried about oxalates. drastically decreases it.
Mic! Vegan 1 year last Saturday. Only tried it because of one of your videos, now I'm hooked for life and I watch everything you post. I truly appreciate the time you put into your research and content.
I leave you with a relevant inspiring quote.
"If your not pooping green every time you ain't doing it right."
-hot girl at co-op register
Andrew Kunz are you still vegan? Is it really noticeable?
I'm an almost-carnivore (I was on a ketogenic diet). This video convinced me to try a vegan diet. Today is my first day. Thanks for posing this video!
Tijo Jose keep going! It's my day 25th and my digestion is 10 times better than before!
You are plant based not vegan , vegan is about ethic ,it about the animal ,not a diet
@@mayaisabelle8 Does it matter? if you don't eat animals products it's the same thing right.
@@kroneexe no it not, vegan is a ethical choice , it lore thn diet , it what you wear , it a lifestyle...
@@mayaisabelle8 Don't think you are superior because of this. There are 3 branches of veganism: Environment, ethics and health. Does it really matter which one people think is most important as long as they follow the lifestyle. I'm tired of ethical vegans feeling superior to health and environmental vegans. We are all on the same team here.
I study food sciences here in Finland and we are adviced to limit our greens consumption to about 100g of spinach or 60g of arugula a day. This is because the food safety authorities dump all nitrates and nitrites to same category which means nitrates from greens is thought to function in our bodies like nitrates and nitrites from bacon, sausages and other processed meats. They fail to understand that nitrites from processed meats don't turn into nitric oxide, like they do from plants, but nitrosamines which are really toxic for humans!
I don't understand how a food safety authority can give such advice!

Vegan Garõ There is no money made in advicing against eating greens. And particularly the ones with high nitrate content.
Vegan Garõ I actually watch TV pretty seldom since I'm working on myself most of the time. But tell me how is saying don't eat nitrate rich plant foods going to contribute to industrialized food sales. The authority here is just saying don't eat these plants, eat the other with low levels of nitrates instead.
Watching this drinking a green smoothie! Happy days!

Thanks, Mic.! I've gotten off track recently due to a big move and living a transient lifestyle. I needed this reminder to stop eating processed foods and return to whole foods. I need the energy and happiness!
Yadda yadda yadda dude…hope you got your mojo back.
Thank you sir, I've been vegan for almost a year but I've been procrastinating on greens. Thank you for so many facts!!
Great video! I love greens but yeah they're damn expensive so I decided to start growing collard greens and amaranth. They're practically self-sustainable here in socal especially the collard greens they took on the heat and the drought like it was nothing.
Xibalba nice
Where I live greens are some of the cheapest foods you can buy, usually around a dollar for a huge bunch/head.
Same in Canada with my Kale (at least for spring/summer) only problem is the bugs all want to eat them too XD
Micro greens
My eye colour changed (became more intense) since going vegan, and I never really believed it until I heard other vegans say it as well. Now I know I'm not crazy!
In how many days
@@soorajwrir4433 If it’s true (and not some other cause/ placebo) then changes like this will at least take months. Your old cells have to be replaced (a few times).
@@august4633 yes i know it takes years and I've seen several vegans saying that it has happened to them
Beetroot leaves are my absolute favorite, I heard they're extremely healthy and have quite a nice amount of vitamin K :) I've been doing really well with the whole food diet and I feel awesome. I don't think it's overly expensive either, and I'm a student. I'd rather have amazing health and not go clubbing that often.
I've been eating very shitty in the past few weeks. Everything vegan but an incredible amount of fries, cookies and vegan cheese mostly because my closest supermarket doesn't have a lot of fresh produce and I'm too lazy to go to the farmer's market.
I shit you not, my body is craving spinach and a big ass lettuce. So I guess this video was the little nudge I needed to actually go out and buy myself some greens.
Thanks Mic
Camila Stefanie I get that too after a long weekend of vegan junk food I eat oatmeal and I hate oatmeal
This happens to me too. I get cravings for romaine lettuce and I eat a huge salad with a whole head or more!
The Broccolini Industry lmao I'm never gonna stop eating junk food though you'd be amazed at how much junk food I used to eat back then. now my taste buds have changed enough that a lot of the stuff I used to eat is disgusting to me. Still, I'd rather eat my fries and vegan cheese and lazy premade vegan burgers than ever eat animals again.
not all vegans are in it for the health benefits, most of us just wanna convince other people that eating vegan can be fun. if people come to veganism for health reasons, hey, more power to them, I just want then to be vegan
Shmittyplaysflute today I had some leftover pizza I made last night and I ate it with a side of two heads of lettuce. it was amazing.
Johnny Garcia I love oatmeal so I can't relate. but sometimes when I've had a weekend of nothing but junk food I'll be craving raw unseasoned kale and let me tell you, seasoned kale and I don't agree so much in a good day. It's always fun to find out your body knows how to take care of itself better than the conscious part of me
green is love green is life

green is the heart chakra after all
Yes that's true it washes away bad things in your body
Yes..and nature's first green is gold...as they say.
Another awesome video Mic! I love how you crunch all that data into enjoyable clips. One more tip I'd like to add for those that think veggies are expensive to buy. You can also regrow veggies from your kitchen scraps as well - celery, bok choy, romaine lettuce, and cabbage to name just a few!
Dude I love your channel! I'm so thankful you put in this much research and provide such quality videos. These are the type of well researched informative videos that made me go vegan. Keep putting out incredible content man:)
Thanks for the inspiration. This was a bit heavy on the research, I am glad you appreciated it instead of being overwhelmed by it.
Love the research! You make such a good case for veganism/ eating more Whole Foods in general!
TY for the info I should eat more greens. Now onto some food videos with greens. :)
I drink Beet Root extract every day. My BP is low, my workouts have more umph, and my muscles love the pump
"You can be a lemur brooooo" literally laughed out loud! 😂👌🏼
brain damaged soy boy humour!
the lemur bit had me in tears!!! omg!!
Can you possibly make a video centering around fluoride and how it affects our health? Love all of your videos btw (:
Thanks a lot. More greens. God bless!
I just about died at that eye color joke. You are so informative and entertaining!
Right!?! I love lemurs, but I don't want to have their eyes! : ))
I'd just like to say thank you for always having wonderful source of data and evidence. One of my co-workers often comes after my veganism in a joking/not joking way. Today he mentioned that vegans often don't get enough vitamins like zinc, etc. I was able to quote the ever popular article that you use and told him that a properly planned vegan diet provides sufficient nutrient quantities with the exception of B-12 for which people can take a once weekly vitamin. He then said, ok you got me, and walked away. WIN!
lol that type of win is a rare occurrence. It is the largest organization of nutrition professions in the world after all......
Greens are the EASIEST thing to grow!
This is so useful, I will start eating more leafy greens asap. I love that you pointed out good places to start. turns out basically every leafy green helps. I thought if it wasn't the best of the best like spinach or kale, it didn't count. I was only eating those mostly. That I'm good by adding what leafy greens I feel like eating is very encouraging.
Thank you for discussing eye color change..it was hard for me to believe Kristina's claim without some scientific evidence 🙌
Lacy Cook he does another video on fully raw diets
do you go to Lacy??? I do!!!!!😄😄😄. go Lacy lions
Amanda Rivernider generally speaking, if you have darker coloured eyes, they'll light up somehow. If you got a brown ring around your pupils and a shade of green at the corners, you might get greener eyes, because the melanin decreases.
Gillian Berry’s went from green to blue, she is definitely a reliable source. She has a short video about it on RUclips.
Loving your videos! So informational and not boring at all :D I also really like that you are focusing not just on meat, dairy and eggs but on stuff which is good for humans as vegans can implement them as well to become healthier!! Thank you for making them :)
Can you please make a video on palm oil? I'm interested to see your opinion. A lot of vegans consider it not vegan.
I'll put it high up on the list. Thanks for the suggestion.
Great presentation! Grow greens in containers in your house! 1 family has a wide bowl with greens growing in it, as a table centerpiece; rotates bowls of living greens so a maturing bowl of them is always on table, pick-able at every meal and snacks easy to reach by all family members. Our 'dinosaur' kale plants have been surviving winter freezes in SW WA, for 3 years...they look sad in winter, but perk up as weather goes to spring; if grown in rich soil with compost, taste sweet. .
From spring to late fall, you can find greens growing all over the place. Mic mentioned curly dock, but also look up field mustard, amaranth, purslane, stinging nettles (that's right, you can eat those), and lamb's quarters, among others. Wildman Steve Brill is a good resource for wild edibles if you live in the US.
Also, let's not forget that you can find frozen spinach for pretty cheap these days, too. Toss it into a smoothie.
I love lamb's quarters! Cheap man's spinach. I have purslane in my garden too. It is a good source of Omega 3s I just found out, even containing EPA (normally only reserved for fish and algae)! That is normally reserved for fish. I'll check out Steve Brill, thanks!
Except it is only a very small amount of EPA I just read. Gotta eat a ton!
Happy to see this video in such a timely manner. Within the last 2 days, I've resolved to up my greens intake after researching, and here you are posting on greens today. Great video as always.
"did we just photosynthesize? Am I a plant?" hahah got me good. Good video as always
I just want to say that I'm so thankful for your channel, Mic. For real. I have been vegan for over a year and I'm a passionate activist. I love to educate people on these kinds of preventable diseases, and in general about how healthy it can be to be vegan. I'm not a scientist or even someone who can fully understand studies, but I value their credibility. Whenever I have something to say, I link your related videos and studies you cite. It makes it so easy to spread the message with factual data to back it up. Thank you for helping contribute to this movement; I utilize your content regularly.
For example, I just looked to see if you had a video on ulcerative colitis and you do, and it's only like 5 mins long! I hope you continue to create content. It's helping so many people.
It's called......."Sad"atonin. LMAO!!!! Love you Mic!
That cracked me up too! :D

Standard American Diet is SAD
While leafy green veggies are WONDERFUL for your eyes and can help prevent macular degeneration, the study you quoted was talking about macular pigment density. Your macula is part of your retina, or the back of your eye. Your iris is the colored part of your eye. More pigment on the iris would cause it to turn more brown, not blue or green etc.
Great vid Mic, keep them coming and dont stop till ya drop.
I started my vegan diet on Monday so i'm a few days in and its going amazingly so far! i love your videos and your beautiful haha!
I started mine on October 9, 2017

Jess Silva did u get green eyes ,
Love your videos, man, perfect facts in perfect wrapping! 10/10
Thanks for this and the ongoing education. Didn't understand the importance of the nitrate transformation. Makes total sense. It's a little tricky for me as I have a blood clotting factor called V-Leiden, but I'm not caving in. This makes it difficult to balance out because all the yummy lovely greens tend to be the highest in Vit K. I became a vegan after my health (yes, it did) crash and burn and all kinds of awful things including DTVs and PEs. My doctors are amazed at my recovery and I keep sharing and educating. They sadly don't know. The proof is there. It works and I feel wonderful too. Thanks again.
If I can change my eye color to sharingan red and gain eagle vision...that would be great
Lovage and Dock… never heard of these leafy greens Thank you! This video did make me add greens to my breakfast
Hi, can you make a video presenting us your garden :) ?
You motivated me into making mine own.
greens are so easy to grow, even in buckets on the porch. many are cut-and-come-again so your harvest is very extended. I recommend arugula, newzealand spinach, amaranth. there are also tons more weed greens than mik had time for, so forage parks (not near roads). dandelions just an example.
I found it interesting that the Nitrate > Nitrite > Nitric Oxide pathway relies on enzymes in your saliva turning Nitrates into Nitrites as presumably that would mean you'd benefit less from consuming greens in a smoothie (vs chewing). Fascinating info as always, Mike!
Good point. Crap! ps, love ur channel too!
Haha IKR? Maybe you could swill each gulp around in your mouth for a minute before swallowing? :P Thanks for the love!
i'd be very careful about that, IIRC Greger says to drink green smoothies with a straw and to rinse out one's mouth afterwards AND to avoid brushing for 30 minutes because the acidity softens your enamel ... suggest googling for the video ... my guess is that we get the NO from the nitrate when its digested in the digestive tract anyhow
Veganism Unspun this is why sometimes people tell you to 'chew' your smoothie. Besides, that way you don't eat too much too quickly and get to enjoy the smoothie more like a meal than just a thicker juice
@emailjwr I didn't even think about the effects on one's teeth! Being an optimally healthy organism is complicated!
@Camila - Yes, I remember hearing that now - I always figured it was just to slow down your ingestion and avoid blood-sugar spikes, I guess there can be many unforeseen consequences to mechanizing the way we eat!
Mic. you fucking rock that growing greens channel you recommended is exactly what i needed GOOD LOOKS BRO

You're so funny... I love your videos and yes, I do need to eat more greens too. I'm good in the fruit department but I need more leafy greens!! :)
Bremen Schmidt I hate the taste for greens so much.... so I just make them in smoothies
I tend to cycle between cooked and raw vegetables depending on what I am in the mood for that week. Lately I've been making salads of finely shredded cabbage, collard greens, grated carrot, grated squash, bell pepper. The dressings are Dr. Fuhrmans dressing recipes which are awesome - blended nuts, fruits and herbs. No oil. One of the tastiest ways to get in greens.
will juicing leafy greens have the same effect?
No, but it's better than not having them at all
Blending is the way to go. Eat the whole thing.
Love your videos, and that you aren't afraid to do the work to really dive into the research. Your videos are what made me decide to shift to a plant-based diet from eating just meat/dairy/pasta pretty much, because of the undeniable health benefits. And I've been seeing the benefits after only 7 weeks. Keep doing what you're doing :)

Damn. I've been taking your "Humans are Starchivores" video too seriously
regarding "macular pigment optical density" (2:07) - the macula is in the retina, which is not visible without tools. eye color is from the iris, in the front. these are two distinct anatomical locations of the eye.
also nitrous oxide's effect on the arterial system is vasodilation, not a layer of air to "keep things flowing" (3:35). air within the vascular system could embolize and have devastating effects. nitrous oxide's vasodilatory effect is the reason why it is used in the treatment of resistant pulmonary hypertension.
Does raw green cabbage count? It isn't very green but it still seems like a green to me.
Yesssss
Good to know!
Dr. Michael Greger did a video where he talked about a cost/benefit analysis of vegetables. The winner was purple cabbage! In part, because the cost is so low. But cabbage is healthy, too. There are leafy veggies out there with a greater nutritional profile than cabbage ... but they cost a lot more. Cabbage is extremely healthy ... it's a cruciferous vegetable ... yet, it costs very little. AND ... BONUS ... it lasts a super-long time, before it rots. I travel a lot. Cabbage can travel with me. Even without refrigeration! (Obviously, refrigeration makes it last even longer.) Cabbage lasts and lasts and lasts. And, cabbage has a really mild, palatable taste. Cabbage is a wonderful thing to include in your diet. I'm a big fan of cabbage.
I don't know, I don't think I could ever eat cabbage raw, green or red. We'll see I guess. I'm vegan but not strickly WFLF-no SOS yet.
felinekj Really? I just put some apple cider vinegar on it and it's like a salad. Have you ever eaten coleslaw?
This inspired me to eat more greens, thank you! Frozen kale and collard greens are quite cheap in my local supermarket. Eating them with a bit of mustard supplies what was lost by freezing to realease the micronutrient as if it was fresh
Just made a vegan pizza topped with a ton of arugula!!!!
No way a ton of arugula fits on a normal sized pizza.
I'm thinking all the vegan cheese wouldn't be so good for you
Just tried arugula first time yesterday god damn gross that smell is so strong had to triple wash my vitamix to get that smell to go. That was only one cup.
Kate Sorice how do you make a vegan pizza??? Sounds amazing☺
It's also really easy to grow greens hydroponically. Literally in a lidded solo cup, $5 bottle of nutrients, one piece of rock wool, fill the cup and put it in a window or under a light. You can also get a complete six cup setup for like $30 on eBay. So it's doable for people even on a tight budget.

Dr. Esselstyn is literally prescribing food as medicine. What an MVP!
A lot of doctors do nowadays: Dr Mark Hyman, Dr William Li, Dr Jason Fung…
I went vegan for 6 months and my eye color changed from brown to a honeybrown / hazel, however as soon as i started eating regular again they went back to normal brown. so it works, it's just hard to maintain it. I was eating cooked greens, tofu, unsweetened soy milk, baked beans and plenty of fruits. I've noticed that different races get different colors
white people with brown eyes can go to light blue or light green
north indians(like myself) can go to honeybrown/ hazel, dark green
hispanics/mexicans i have seen go to blue or green as well.
I have not seen color changes in any of my east Asian(chinese, korean, japanese, etc) friends that are vegan though.
So cool! Do you know how long it took them to go from hazel to blue? Or anything to blue?
I have a lot of neon yellow ontop of my blue eyes with orange in the middle and was just wondering what real life examples are because not many people are doing it and most who are don't take pictures and put them on the internet!
Yay! A John Kohler mention- I love that guy. He's one of the very few people (irl and online) I've seen speak and immediately sensed his sincerity and integrity. He earned my trust and was my tipping point with going plant based 2 years ago. Grow them greens!
