      I agree with just about everything Mic says in his videos. What I wish
      he would bring up along with many other famous vegans and doctors are
      the importance of the different colors of the fruits and vegetables. The
      only person I've ever heard bring this up is David Wolfe though I don't
      agree with everything he talks about with other subjects. Each color
      represents the different type of medicine so to speak. They also
      represent the chakra system. Everyone talks about the importance of
      protein, calcium, iron, vitamins, etc but supposedly the colors are the
      most important and people should get them in their diet everyday if they
      can and a lot of each color. Disease may very well come from a color
      deficiency. If you think about it, people for the longest time never
      knew the science of protein, health, vitamins, and all they could go by
      were the colors in nature. This would be a very interesting topic to
      bring up and I hope it's talked about by Mic and other people at some
      point.

    • @cezmo6838
      @cezmo6838 8 лет назад +5

      I will admit though that Mic has brought up how important greens are which is good. Green is probably the most important color since it's the heart chakra in the Zen philosophy and balances the rest since it is right in the middle. With this whole color thing, it makes you look at everything differently regarding health and the problem is that it's not a studied enough topic to come up with any radical conclusions since nobody talks about it. If disease and cancer has to do with a color deficiency of a certain color or many colors, I wonder if the science of health is overrated or a complete lie since maybe all you need to do is get all the colors of the fruits and veggies in everyday. Obviously you can't eat meat, dairy, or processed food but even if you did, I wonder if people would see as much disease if they were getting in all the colors everyday and in great amounts. I wonder if raw vegans who fail on their diets would've been successful if they got all the colors in everyday. If you lived thousands of years ago it wouldn't be fair that you couldn't get chia seeds for their omega 3s for instance since it wouldn't be available in the region but it would make more sense in this way if color was and is more important and therefore easier to obtain since colors come in a variety of different fruits and veggies and are in most regions. There are a lot of unanswered questions regarding all of this and I expect that most don't have the answers but I would still like to hear thoughts and opinions and hopefully a video from Mic.

    I study food sciences here in Finland and we are adviced to limit our greens consumption to about 100g of spinach or 60g of arugula a day. This is because the food safety authorities dump all nitrates and nitrites to same category which means nitrates from greens is thought to function in our bodies like nitrates and nitrites from bacon, sausages and other processed meats. They fail to understand that nitrites from processed meats don't turn into nitric oxide, like they do from plants, but nitrosamines which are really toxic for humans!
    I don't understand how a food safety authority can give such advice!

Grow greens in containers in your house! 1 family has a wide bowl with greens growing in it, as a table centerpiece; rotates bowls of living greens so a maturing bowl of them is always on table, pick-able at every meal and snacks easy to reach by all family members. Our 'dinosaur' kale plants have been surviving winter freezes in SW WA, for 3 years...they look sad in winter, but perk up as weather goes to spring; if grown in rich soil with compost, taste sweet. .

    greens are so easy to grow, even in buckets on the porch. many are cut-and-come-again so your harvest is very extended. I recommend arugula, newzealand spinach, amaranth. there are also tons more weed greens than mik had time for, so forage parks (not near roads). dandelions just an example.

    I found it interesting that the Nitrate > Nitrite > Nitric Oxide pathway relies on enzymes in your saliva turning Nitrates into Nitrites as presumably that would mean you'd benefit less from consuming greens in a smoothie (vs chewing). Fascinating info as always, Mike!

      i'd be very careful about that, IIRC Greger says to drink green smoothies with a straw and to rinse out one's mouth afterwards AND to avoid brushing for 30 minutes because the acidity softens your enamel ... suggest googling for the video ... my guess is that we get the NO from the nitrate when its digested in the digestive tract anyhow

    • @Clockworkcityofpain
      @Clockworkcityofpain 8 лет назад +4

      Veganism Unspun this is why sometimes people tell you to 'chew' your smoothie. Besides, that way you don't eat too much too quickly and get to enjoy the smoothie more like a meal than just a thicker juice

      @emailjwr I didn't even think about the effects on one's teeth! Being an optimally healthy organism is complicated!

Lately I've been making salads of finely shredded cabbage, collard greens, grated carrot, grated squash, bell pepper. The dressings are Dr. Fuhrmans dressing recipes which are awesome - blended nuts, fruits and herbs. No oil. One of the tastiest ways to get in greens.

      Dr. Michael Greger did a video where he talked about a cost/benefit analysis of vegetables. The winner was purple cabbage! In part, because the cost is so low. But cabbage is healthy, too. There are leafy veggies out there with a greater nutritional profile than cabbage ... but they cost a lot more. Cabbage is extremely healthy ... it's a cruciferous vegetable ... yet, it costs very little. AND ... BONUS ... it lasts a super-long time, before it rots. I travel a lot. Cabbage can travel with me. Even without refrigeration! (Obviously, refrigeration makes it last even longer.) Cabbage lasts and lasts and lasts. And, cabbage has a really mild, palatable taste. Cabbage is a wonderful thing to include in your diet. I'm a big fan of cabbage.

    It's also really easy to grow greens hydroponically. Literally in a lidded solo cup, $5 bottle of nutrients, one piece of rock wool, fill the cup and put it in a window or under a light. You can also get a complete six cup setup for like $30 on eBay. So it's doable for people even on a tight budget.

    I went vegan for 6 months and my eye color changed from brown to a honeybrown / hazel, however as soon as i started eating regular again they went back to normal brown. so it works, it's just hard to maintain it. I was eating cooked greens, tofu, unsweetened soy milk, baked beans and plenty of fruits. I've noticed that different races get different colors
    white people with brown eyes can go to light blue or light green
    north indians(like myself) can go to honeybrown/ hazel, dark green
    hispanics/mexicans i have seen go to blue or green as well.
    I have not seen color changes in any of my east Asian(chinese, korean, japanese, etc) friends that are vegan though.
