This is a tutorial on how to carve something called a bas-relief. That is a sculpture that is flat but has some depth to it. We use foam for this project which is very easy to carve with ordinary tools. We create something called a triptych which is three panels side by side and each panel has a picture. This was a very common technique during the medieval period. A triptych could be paintings, sculptures, or carvings. And often times they folded up.
My triptych tells a story. And this bas relief carving is part of a larger project called the Wizard's Table which goes inside the Wizard's lair which I am currently building. You can learn more about the Wizard's Lair on my website here:

Very cool. I was thinking of doing the same type of thing to decorate a workspace in my uninsulated metal barn. Making it look like inside of an ancient ruin,, for example.
You could probably get quite a nice effect by spraypainting it black or very dark brown (or whichever colour of material you're going for) first, then brushing layers of incrementally lighter paint onto it, each layer avoiding more and more of the "deeper" areas, giving you a shading effect. Alternatively a more refined form of the pre-shading you applied could be used, spraying the entire thing white and then airbrushing or carefully spraying black into the deep areas, and using a paint that doesn't cover 100%
I kinda feel that some areas could also be picked out with silver or gold, as if it had been inlaid. Perhaps the wizard's staff. Alternatively as others have mentioned, it could be painted in full colour.
Also that third panel is amazing.
+Islacrusez What a good suggestion. I think this would give it an amazing look. Good creative thinking! And thanks about that third panel. Yes, my favorite!
that looks awesome
you've inspired me to do many projects of my own but I like yours the best
Oh my gosh this is awesome! I've been wondering how to do this FOREVER!
Thank you for the ree bar knife vid. Your a good teacher.
Sweet looks great man
Awesome! I can't wait to see the complete wizard's tower, already it looks fantastic. Keep it up :)
You should make a quick room tour, everyone would like it.
Another way to do that is to use foam core and just cut out the designs. That works quite well for doing things like hieroglyphic reliefs to go on walls and the like. I am going to do it when I move to England and do my Ancient Egyptian theme house, especially in the energy healing/reflexology room. Though, for it I will be using a medical papyrus. It's going to be so much fun! Anyway, thanks! And it looks awesome.
This came out awesome! Great job!
Will, this project is awesome, keep up the wizard work!
+King and Country Thanks!
Great idea. I think I will do a 3d picture like that in the future.
lol i made 2 of these and some columns. My door now looks like a medieval portal. looks awesome. can you do the cruficiator from six guns? that would be awesome
I know you said you thought about leaving it just dremeled but The background definatly looks better the way you finished it.
Excellent idea! I think I am going to use this same technique in carving out an original design on foam board, seal it, and then use Smooth-On products to make replicas of my work.
Has anyone else tried to seal foam board using something else other than Mod-Podge? I am thinking about using white glue to act as the first sealer, and then add a Crystal Clear Acrylic coat. The reason is that I have had instances in the past where Mod-Podge didn't cure properly and ended up with a gooey and sticky finish, and it ruined some final pieces of small Plaster of Paris sculptures. I have found over time, and by a few resourceful folks, to use the white glue (Elmer's or Alleen's white glue) and Crystal Clear Coat to seal away copies of photographs on wood, polymer clays, and other media. I am sure that the same steps could apply to the carved out foam board in order to be able to create it for reproduction use.
Thanks for making the video!
Thank you! That´s so cool!
Beautiful table
+Lechat Thanks!
Really like it, im thinking about make one about The Hobbit. I like the scene when Bilbo is in Erebor trying to escape from the dragon :)
+Pablo alonso flores Wonderful idea. Do it! I will send you a certificate of contribution.
impresionante!
Apart from the cool video- that food looked tasty:D
Will - Been watching your channel for a few years now... Wondering if your ever going to do some more miniatures? Or some Dungeons and Dragons stuff? Like some cardboard taverns or what not.
+Druid Death Wolf Absolutely, I love the miniature work. I need to finish the storm the castle diorama!
Awesome! I am starting to DM for a group love crafting my own stuff to use and would love to see you craft some more mini's!
This looks really fun to create Will! Do you think it might have been better to give it a complete black coat first and dry brush gold or silver over it to make it look metal?
+johnskyrim Yes, you are right! Good good suggestion.
Could you film more black smiting videos, like filling a mold with molten metals and how to properly remove the cast
+POTDAD Smackfad (Demon King) Yes please :)
I want to make one of these for a false fireplace for christmass for my girl friends daughter I am going to use the gray an black paint with some white paint also.
love the carving!!
if you wanted to, how would you smooth out the chip wood effect if you were not going for that chiseled look
Hey Will! The s in bas is silent, it's actually pronounced Ba, like the sound a sheep makes! Love this video though, the triptych looked amazing! :)
+bcwr96 Ahh, thanks!
Could you please make Hadhafang from lotr? I'd love it if you did!
+Valerie Chung Yes, I might do this.
Thank you!
I think you should make anduril (aragorn's sword)
Hi Will, could you please tell me what is the carving tool you are using? Is that a drill attached knife? Thanks!
Never thought of using Great Stuff as glue
Hey will since you've made the Dragon Age helmet
can you also make a Dragon Age armor? :D
Thx
A while back bloodborne got a new dlc. Are you going to make any of the new weapons that were added to the game?
I was looking this up for technique. If you don't know Styrofoam burns away easily in metal casting. Make a plaster mold and pour. You could have this in metal in 1 to 2 days. Just don't paint it.
could you please make the assassin's creed syndicate cane sword
Will you should make a dragon slayer spear on the forge.
+Bret Lemieux Good suggestion! I have been thinking about forging a spear tip.
The word Bas-relief is from french ? Because bas in french is low
where can you get the big foam board
+Alton Lee Home depot. It is called Foamular.
+epicfantasy thank you
Can you make Meliodas' dragon sword handle? ( the seven deadly sins)
Do you think it would look good if it was painted in color?
You're name is a character in Blood On The River
+john smith Painted carvings were a thing, especially on ships.
+john smith it can do as islacrusez said painting on carvings/ sculptures was a pretty big thing. Historical buildings/ decorations were a lot more colorful than you see in the movies. Its only that all of this color has faded over age that we assume everything in ye olde days was just grey and brown
+john smith Yes, I think it would.
That's cool to know, maybe I might make an extravagantly painted foam carving (if I get around to it).
Can you next make Jason Voorhees mask or Sauron helmet.
make a Taureil dagger from the hobbit
I don't know if I spelled that right
+myles pitts I have them right here: ruclips.net/video/nrOlJEQO2b4/видео.html
second
fifth
first
New first!
Please do a chess board.
+Random Speaker This is on my list of projects to do. What material do you think I should use?
+epicfantasy wood if it isn't to hard. I've seen tutorials but none as instructional as how you describe your builds.
lol i made 2 of these and some columns. My door now looks like a medieval portal. looks awesome. can you do the cruficiator from six guns? that would be awesome
