Why is this camera appreciating in Value? The Fujifilm Finepix 3D W3 - the 3D Point & Shoot standard

  • This is the first of a 2 part series of videos on this legendary 3D Point & Shoot camera. 10 Years ago, Fujifilm had the vision to not just create a camera, but a complete 3D solution including a new file format, printing services, underwater housing, 3D screen that doesn't need glasses etc. It started with the 3D W1 camera and was followed up with the improved 3D W3 camera. It all seemed like there was going to be a new promising series of 3D cameras to come. But then it all suddenly stopped - the 3D fad was over, along with 3D TVs, 3D cinema.
    As a result, this camera has become somewhat of a legendary camera, a benchmark against which other 3D cameras are evaluated even to this day. It is also still a good camera in its own right. As such I have decided to do a review of this camera. Not so much to assess purchase of this camera, but to be able to assess other cameras against the standard set by this camera.

      @@ANAVision I've had this for a few months now and am loving the camera for photos! It's nice that 3D Steriod can read and convert the mpo files right on my phone. Right now using it for family pictures but have been thinking what could be done creatively as well.
      Your point on the 3D effect diminishing with distance is something I had not thought of before buying, and so I don't think it will work well for traditional landscape. That's okay though, I'll just have to play to it's strengths. Anyway, I am also interested in 3D video from this camera. Do you know of software (or an Android app would be very nice) that works to convert the avi file to something that works on youtube? Stereo MovieMaker?

    • @ANAVision
      @ANAVision  3 года назад +1

      @@korteksvisceralzen2694 Thanks so much for getting back to me :) I was wondering if you were enjoying this camera after I heard you were getting one. Great to hear it's worked out.
      As for converting the avi files to something that works on youtube - I've actually developed a video on how to upload 3D content to RUclips (see here: ruclips.net/video/MmDrnwPIWKg/видео.html). This video assumes you are uploading an SBS format, but for the Fujifilm AVI some modifications would be required. I include this modification here so you can go straight form Fufifilm Finepix 3D W3 .AVI file to a .MP4 file you can upload to RUclips:
      ffmpeg -i input.AVI -filter_complex "[0:0][0:2] hstack=inputs=2, scale=iw/2:ih [out]" -aspect 1.7777 -vcodec libx264 -x264opts frame-packing=3 -map [out] -map 0:1 output.mp4

  • @ANAVision
    @ANAVision  3 года назад +1

    Note: the reds are for some reason rendered darker with the RUclips version than the original uploaded video. This causes cross talk in the anaglyph footage that I have at the end of the video which compromises the 3D effect. I will look into this to see what can do to fix this. I watch the original and have virtually zero cross talk, but get a large amount of cross talk in the left eye when viewing on RUclips. I apologise for this. Please check back soon as I will attempt to upload a fix soon.

      Naa, the sony td series might have better quality but the two lenses were too close together, unfortunately making it a weak 3d cam. It means its only suited to capture small objects instead of rooms or scenery. The fujifilm is the only consumer cam that has the lenses at the same distance as human eyes. At least that i know of.

    Hello and thanks for the detailed review! I've found a great deal for a second hand W3 in great condition and got me interested as I would like to explore stereo photography and it's creative uses. • @ANAVision
      @ANAVision  2 года назад +1

      I would say that it is still the best 3D point & shoot camera out there. 10MP per camera = 20MP total is not bad for photos. It's more the video that could be improved upon (only 720p at 24fps). If you want to wait, there may be a camera better suited for video coming out called the QooCam EGO (Kickstarter) but as I don't have one yet, I can't vouch for it. Thanks for your feedback. About the noise, the images my W3 takes appear to be okay, but I've seen images of others that also complain about noise, and they are certainly noisy. So I'm not sure, maybe some of the cameras have issues with this. Does your camera have noise only in low light, or all the time? One thing about 3D photos is that the noise fortunately tends to cancels out somewhat as you are viewing two images simultaneously. This should reduces perceived noise somewhat due to averaging.
