It's so awesome that Japanese transport staff (whether it be train, ferry, etc.) all wave when the vessel departs. Is this exclusive to Japan or just a 'nice people" thing to do? We don't have that in New York----maybe at the airport, ground crew might wave at me if I wave first :)

That item on the 2nd course in the lower left looked suspiciously like a delicious bean sprouts and cucumber pickle I was served at a local Japanese restaurant that offered traditional cuisine and a few Americanized dishes. I am sad that it is gone, because I got to try all sorts of things there that other Japanese places in the area didn't offer, like moromi miso (with cucumber slices).

    thanks for another video! your ferry journeys are very interesting, especially since I live in landlocked country.
    I wonder how these ferries get to the port as they are so big, I mean how they arrive at their destination and dock (is that correct word?)

    • @declissonolivier9376
      @declissonolivier9376 Год назад

      Dock. Yes the correct word.
      First of all: in slow motion, sometime not at all (motor still operating, but in neutral gear).
      These ferries are helped, having "side-propellers" in the front and in the rear. Some kind of "tunnels" (funnels) with two engines (one at each end, so portside and seaside; left and right to say in a simply way).
      When they leave the dock. These propellers "push" the ferry away from the dock. When they arrive (docking), it's the contrary: they help the ship to gently come to the dock (or pier, which is the appropriate term).
      Without these engines, they would need tug boats to get to the pier.
      Side propellers definitly put an end of tug boats life. As you can see them "pushing" or "pulling" on videos of old ocean liners in ports such as New-York, Southampton, Le Havre.
      If you go to a dry shipyard. You will notice that even some (14meters and more) sailboat are equiped with a funnel in the front. It is a great help to take a pier without any hurt!
