Watching this in anticipation of EVO2022 in a couple hours, but... Justin going to Balrog felt like the REAL "USA vs Japan" match had begun. You could feel it in the air of the crowd with their "USA" chants in tow as Justin literally puts an entire country on his back. The symbolism of such a sight is one of the things that makes this EVO GF incredibly memorable. Even to this day, America had not won SF4 on the world stage of EVO. They haven't done it for SF5... yet (go iDom!). In fact, the last time USA took home 1st place in Street Fighter... was over 10 years ago. my favorite of all time is Lil Majin vs JDCR in Tekken 7 EVO 2018. Lil Majin being the only American player to make into the finals playing against JDCR a dominant player was fantastic. Also the power of the crowd, shouting Lil Majin's name just gave his match so much more hype behind it.

The mind game are epic. 2nd set, tied 1-1, Daigo did multiple dashes to chase Justin, tried to bait a super but ate the Balrog super but still left Justin with no meters and stole that round. Godlike.
Awesome! Yes, just such an amazing video. It was almost as exciting as watching the real thing and your commentary over it as well as your keen eye on both player's decision's is immaculate and on point.
It's because of Justin's friend who mains balrog put his fists together, signaling balrog. They had practiced with the knowledge that balrog can 3frame jab out of fadc on Ryu. With that knowledge, his play style of turtling is his specialty, so it was almost destined to happen.
I remember watching this happening live on the stream, this was one hype finals! It's always epic seeing these two legends battling out with each other. I also miss watching SF4 matches, imo much more fun game to play and watch than SFV.

Excellent video. I really enjoyed it. I've been a fan for a long time, and it's been a real pleasure to see your career and channel grow. I credit you and Dotodoya for keeping me motivated and interested in DBFZ. Keep it up!
Justin used his special ability " Lame it out." "Lame it out allows Justin to play completely safe punishing his opponent and allows them come to him. Lame it second ability activates when his opponent gets into the corner. "
Dang this may be your best video yet. I have always been a fan since your FighterZ videos started (and still excitedly keep up with those) but this Fighting Game History content is next level. Such a good watch. Also, incredible job successfully incorporating the star Justin Wong himself, truly the icing on the cake
I think people sometimes forget Daigo's career logevity. His peers like Valle, Watson, and the likes aren't competitive anymore but he is still a fixture at the CPT. The only one like him is Sako.
I like Sako even more than Daigo, and I LOVE both. Daigo will go cheap if he's decided he wants to win above all (broken Evil Ryu in Ultra IV, ultra broken Yun in Arcade Edition), whereas I feel Sako is more "pure" in that he appears to play mainly to amuse himself and to entertain. That being said, when Daigo is competitive in a Street Fighter game, he elevates the meta and the yomi to the absolute maximum. As much as I hated Evil Ryu in Ultra IV, even Sako, who essentially developed the tech for the character (and way before Evil Ryu was even on anyone's radar as a viable option) said Daigo took the character to a level that even Sako couldn't imagine, or deal with. After Daigo had mastered Evil Ryu, Sako barely touched the character again, because he said it was pointless. Two absolute immortal legends for completely different reasons.
@@TheEvilCheesecake Never say never. For me, however, Daigo's contribution to the FGC goes beyond what he's accomplished as a player. He's essentially shown that being a career competitive fighting player is a thing, and for that the Tokidos etc. can never thank him enough.
Damn that was a great match. So much going on here. I never saw this one because I was still too stubborn to get the internet, but I saw 2010. I was shocked at Justin's first two pick and was wondering why he didn't pick a more lame, footsies based character, as that's what he's really known for, even in MvC2 with run away Storm. I'd like to add a couple of observations. Justin wasn't using Balrog's Focus Attack because the range on it is awful. I believe Gootecks was the first one to put it to use with the Gootecks shimmy, later adopted by PR Balrog with great success. Normally, if your opponent charges a FA, you can just charge yours, and if they let it rip, you get to land your FA before they can backdash, and if the charge to level 3, you can backdash and then punish. But Daigo was charging FA at a range where if Balrog tried to FA it, he would absorb the hit but be out of range to land the uppercut, allowing Daigo to dash in and punish. Second, those wakeup cr.mk Daigo was doing were in response to Justin shimmying or just backing away on wakeup, trying to avoid DP FADC. That's why they worked, and it was a brilliant adaptation, as it limited Justin's options and forced him to commit or block on Oki, a huge advantage to Daigo that let him escape out of the corner. A great match and glad you posted it. In the future for these, my only suggestion would be to cut down on the match footage and build more of a narrative. Edit in some things between footage that help raise the stakes and build a story around what's happening. I think it would make these more compelling and more successful. As this stands, it's just basically the match with your commentary. And that worked great in the Honda video, because you had something to say about the gameplay, you were explaining a concept. But here, it was pretty basic. Still appreciated though. HO HO HO!!!
The best EVO Grand Finals I can always think of is Garireo v. Dogura in BBCP at EVO 2014. The raw emotion from the players, commentators, and crowd really makes that set something magical to behold and is what convinced me I wanted to become a bigger part of the FGC.
Again, LOVE these FGC commentary and you breaking the nuances of the matches and the techniques down. Keep up the good work and looking forward to these whenever you have time to churn them out.
I remember watching this live and I was hype af because my homey played rog. He would mash crouching jab and confirm into that falsh kick move then ultra or do a crouching roundhouse because it has such a long range and it was safe. How the fuck did japan not know about rog at that time blew me away.
All the way through Street Fighter 4's many versions, there were some characters that japanese players never learned to fight well, because there were no specialists for those characters able to show them high level tech and play. Arguably PR Balrog's career was made on the fact that there was only ever one good japanese Rog, R, who never broke big. So PR Rog always knew how to beat your character, but you had to figure him out starting from very little knowledge. The fact that he was a world class player and constantly innovated new tech only made it easier for him to be unreadable by anyone not US based.
13:15 The crowd were chanting "Let's go Justin!"
He was doomed to lose from that point.
People need to stop saying that when Justin plays it’s become a self fulfilling prophecy

Dang this may be your best video yet. I have always been a fan since your FighterZ videos started (and still excitedly keep up with those) but this Fighting Game History content is next level. Such a good watch. Also, incredible job successfully incorporating the star Justin Wong himself, truly the icing on the cake
YES man, I don’t even like SF all too much but I remember nearly dying from the hype of this set
For what It’s worth man, I love your commentary and love how in depth you get,. Keep doing what you’re doing
The rival of every top US player was Daigo. Even Tokido's rival was Daigo. Nobody will ever dominate for so long across so many eras as Daigo did.
@@TheEvilCheesecake Never say never. For me, however, Daigo's contribution to the FGC goes beyond what he's accomplished as a player. He's essentially shown that being a career competitive fighting player is a thing, and for that the Tokidos etc. can never thank him enough.
Just rewatched some of your earlier coverage of fighting game history, hyped for this one too!
HO HO HO!!!
Dude, keep up the good work. This series is amazing. Your commentary especially makes it awesome, so much insight
Punk v Tokido. The storyline was so good
The best EVO Grand Finals I can always think of is Garireo v. Dogura in BBCP at EVO 2014. The raw emotion from the players, commentators, and crowd really makes that set something magical to behold and is what convinced me I wanted to become a bigger part of the FGC.
yessss this fgc history series is incredible
