That final message is so strangely powerful in its simplicity. "Fighting games are something so great". Not thanking anyone, not saying anything about himself or his opponents or even anything about the community. He's shifting the attention back to the reason everyone was all packed together in a Las Vegas convention center. Whether a pro, audience member, or that special line in between, everyone in that crowd was there out of a passion for fighting games if absolutely nothing else. This is where the emotionless "Murderface" died, in the recognition that after all is said and done, and even after having the trophy he fought so hard for, all he cares about is just how great fighting games are...
And now this story can be told again as the prologue for Punk's incredible run at Evo 2024.
Eventually
Your time will come
And Punk knew it
So happy he won this EVO
Fighting game is something so great.
"Damnit why did he have to say that"
Indeed
Must be. He chose it over Engineering.
"Fighting ghem sumsing so grett"
That's going to be the FGC quote for a decade at the very least. Heck I'm probably going to get it tattooed at some point in time.
I swear this channel is the ESPN 30for30 of the fighting game community
or how about E-sport in general?
True! But for all of eSports!
On moms bro 🤦🏽♂️🤣🤦🏽♂️🤣
If they go woke and race bait, yeah, theyll be the ESPN of FGC.
Why am I crying?
I don't even play street fighter...
"what makes these moments so Special?, Its the Community that's behind them, Its the community that shapes, makes and appreciates these perfect moments for what they are"
yeah i cried on this part 16:42
You too?
it got me too man
me too. :(
TheeSophisticatedCarrot /_\ lmao
i love itabashi's expressions. u can tell he genuinely love playing fighting games
He's in the largest stage of the entire FGC, playing the biggest tournament you can get in, facing fearsome players all the way through, and the guy still enjoys himself a lot.
We should all strive to be a bit like him.
The smilling cyclone.
Itazan is one of my favorite players. He LOVES every second he competes. And he plays a character that's a real crowd favorite when he gets on a roll. Watching him destroy someone with multiple spinning piledrivers in a row, constantly catching them exactly where he wants them and knowing what they're going to try and do to get out of it, is incredibly satisfying.
yeah shame they nerfed gief to shit, watching itazan playing the hard read game was hella satisfying.
The japanese players look like its more fun and not buisness like the american players hence myself
Fighting games, in my opinion, have the best entertainment value out of any esport or any regular sport. The emotion, hype, community, and pure skill involved with the sport is something of pure excitement. I have never cheered as loud for baseball, I have never cried over the raw emotional impact for football, I have never jumped out of my seat in awe from a play for basketball, but I have done all these for EVO tournaments. People think that playing video games isn't a sport, but they have never seen an EVO tournament.
As someone who is more of a basketball and football fan than fighting games (tekken is only fighting game I play/watch tourneys) I agree with you somewhat. Its kind d of subjective because everyone is different but the example I'll use is the Cubs. They hadn't won a title in over 100 years. When they finally did win people were crying everywhere. Sports fans get extremely emotional whether it be esports or contact sports just depends on the person
@@BuuhBlocks I freaked the fuck out when the Cavs came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Warriors. I just lost it.
Fighting games are the same for me, I go crazy for it, like many many others I'm so glad to have seen Moment 37 and been drawn in :)
@@baronvonfaust I'm a pistons fan but also a massive LeBron fan. Coming back 3-1 might be top 5 greatest things on all of sports
I agree with all of those except for football, the world cup is the single greatest sporting event on the planet, bar none.
The best way I’d describe it is that competitive fighting games is like combat sports, explosive and you will witness destruction
Yeah, Tokido has basically been my favorite Japanese player since I saw him stand in front of the projector to get the proper "天" on his back for the demon pose. Really glad to see this, great little biography.
Hahaha, I totally agree.
That move was so awesome.
Oh dude the IRL raging demon was siiiiiick hahahaha
This video is...something so great.
yesterday i lost 4 games straight to a silver player as a rookie, but managed to win 1 game, made my day.....fighting games are great!
Yes they are.
Silvers are bullyes against rookies lol what rank are you now?
It's great to be back here and revisit this after what transpired today.
This video was incredible. I don't know much about the FGC, and i'm fairly new to esports in general, but this somehow hit me pretty hard. The channel is great and I look forward to more videos like this.
Moment 37 was what got me into eSports at the start, and while I've drifted into my own community away from the FGC, EVO always has a spot in my heart. I strongly suggest watching it while it's happening.
It got me too man. Kinda teary at the moment. When someone achieves their goal and does it with the humility, grace and all around class that Tokido shows, it's something truly amazing. Because they realize it's not just about them, it's about everyone who's involved, the people who make esports worth it.
Also shutup i'm not crying you're crying....
@Doppio If this one hit you hard, just wait until you see the story of Arslan Ash. I still get goosebumps and tear up every time
I'm pretty new to it too dude, but it's so awesome :) if you want a laugh go find some UMVC3 stuff with Yipes commentating, it's the best :)
Wow didnt expected much when i clicked on this video, but it turned out to be fucking awesome
TheAri2190 yes, agree totally!
Tokido winning EVO is the best thing that happened in 2017
But it was the worst day for punk
@@dennisdevries2226 It may of been but as long as he learned from it and grew as a player he will look back on it as a lesson
He'd probably still have liked to get his trophy then and there though. Might be in 20 years like Tokido.
@@robertoangel873 this comment aged very well
Thanks for more topic on the FGC, I love it. Tokido’s run at EVO 2017 was such a beautiful thing to witness.
Fighting game is something so great.
When I watched the grand finals live, I was happy for the results but I wasn't in tears like I am now. It's overwhelmingly emotional to watch these but I love it. Makes me love the community more for it. Thank you.
Thank you for watching, comments like yours make all the time and effort put into these videos worth it! Cheers - Miles
12:04 This was the moment the match was really over. Tokido had totally mindcrushed Punk with that taunt combo. Not to mention he totally stole the crowd back on to his side with it.
13:40 was the fanservice though, I literally jumped out of my chair cheering so hard when the demon hit him.
Thank you for doing this one! This was one of the most amazing runs and couldn’t have gone to a more deserving guy. Like you said, 21 top 8s. That’s insane. So when he finally won EVO it was such a heartwarming thing. I want an American to win street fighter at evo as much as the next guy but if Daigo or Tokido are in the grand finals at EVO against any country, they’re my favorites so I’m rooting for them.
No, i'm not crying, you're crying
I dont play fighting game, but i cried
This is the most beautiful moment of EVO history. Tokido’s victory gave the people so much hope. Even when he had lost his chances over and over again, he’d never given up. He learned from his demons and moved on forward. His career goes something like this, “Hope is what makes us strong. It is why we are here. It is what we fight with when all else is lost.”-Pandora ❤️ Because it’s not about who’s the best. It’s about how much hard work and effort of emotion we give and hold onto in the game. That is why we love you Tokido! Messatsu! 🔥
I'd never expect to see a God of War quote describing a fighting game but it is quite fitting
I feel like crying after watching this for some reason
Anytime this channel makes any video involving the FGC and it’s amazing stories, I get so hype. This channel also got me to enjoy watching League too :D
You know what, you are far from the only one to feel like that.
I am mainly an FGC guy, and for years overlooked the e-sports scene in general. I will have to say that the production value and genuine care that goes into these videos does make me care about e-sports more than I use too (that and the odd fascination with Overwatch's League, which is growing to be something like the NBA/MLB/NHL/etc.).
I've watched this like 4 times now. It was a great EVO and a great moment. Thanks for amazing editing
Thank you! - Miles
Your videos in this series are genuinely the best esports content out there. This is the sort of thing that will do the work in getting esports the acclaim and popularity it should have.
Well done.
Thank you, that means a lot to us!
great upload!! you guys always get the evo feeling right. research into the player and his game, woah getting chills, i hope anyone who likes these vids goes out to support each gaming comunity. it's always fun going to these events.
16:41 , i nearly teared up at that part, made me remember my friends back when we used to be spend hours and hours in the arcades, beautiful days.
Thank you for your videos, they are all very well made, I'm glad to see there is still quality content on RUclips :)
Man I love fighting games. I love all the players and their quirky personalities!
Christen Smith It's like an Anime.
This video makes me cry 😢😢😢
Manly tears
This video deserves more views...it has a good story an awesome twist and an emotional ending... awesome video!
this kind of content is something that should be on TV...
I fucking love those FGC videos
The mind chess Tokido played in this set was something out of this world. True brilliance.
Thank you for making me relive this.
Tokido is not only an amazing Street Fighter player, he's also an awesome guy. He deserved the hell out of that win.
Never stop making these videos. These are the best, and I love how your channel covers multiple esport games.
Wow that was awesome! Man I would've loved Punk to win. But Tokido winning when framed in this storyline is very nice as well. GG all
This is wonderful.
the FGC is the greatest place to be in gaming, i am so happy to be a part of this comunity ever since i can remmember to speak
"i just wanna say one thing... fighting game... is something so great."
why am i crying in the club
Fantastic coverage. This was one of the best EVO runs I've ever seen. With one of the 5 Gods finally reaching the peak once more and dethroning Punk for the title, it was mesmerizing to watch The Top 8.
And a recommendation for a possible future FGC video. If you haven't seen it, I recommend checking out the 2017 Tekken World Tour Finals, and a player in there by the name of Qudans. For he is, The Mishima God.
I absolutely love this documentary. You capture so many precious aspects of gaming: the spirit, emotion, suspense, and sheer passion for street fighter. You give us a front seat into one of the most arduous conquests in EVO 2017. We only get a small piece of what it must be like to actually witness it, but I can't imagine how sensational EVO must be in person. Your editing, music, and storytelling make the experience nearly palpable.
Thank you
Ever since i watched tokido play akuma on sf4, ive played akuma on every fighting game since. What a great journey from a truly great player, he wasn't called one of the 5 fighting game gods of Japan for nothing.
Definitely subscribed. One of the best contents I've seen. love how everything is put together. i understand it may take you time finding all the content and editing but damn is it worth it. Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it and thank for you subscribing! - Miles
Can we get the opposite side of the coin: Punk's Legendary EVO run? He made it to finals, and not only did he stay in the winner's bracket, he didn't drop a game the entire way. Literally 2-0'd or 3-0'd every opponent he faced. He may not have won but he made it to grand finals at age 18, that's incredible. He's also incredibly decorated with 21+ tournament wins under his belt despite having not even been a name for a year, all of his accomplishments are in the same window of time. It's amazing.
Tokido’s EVO win has a lot more weight to it
Pchs what about it? I suggested an idea for another video, didn't say one was more significant than the other in any way.
ruclips.net/video/OGrRlQd4ay4/видео.html - heres a good watch, focuses on a lot of faces going into evo 2017. I enjoyed the hell out of it and I don't even play fighting games.
Also, Tokido's story is overall better than Punk. Tokido is generally a very likeable guy in the FGC. While Punk did finished a decent 9th place in Capcom Cup, he just went on a slump and became a MvCI Capcom shill post EVO.
Eh not interested in watching a stuck up kid's side of the story...
Mad respect for Punk. The dude is a rookie and yet he reached it this far. He will have a fantastic career I tell y'all
I've followed Tokido - Gouki since USFIV and I saw this live. I couldn't believe he came back from the bottom of the losers bracket. it was amazing to say the least.
It was all because of the taunt combo. Then punk tried to stun tokido to finish him with a taunt combo but tokido made sure he didn’t press buttons.
I’m not even playing SF but the content is just so dank. Kudos!
This man is the reason why started fighting game community, I saw him play Akuma in a commercial of video games around RUclips during early SF4 days. I was shocked how fun it looked and i said one day 'I want to play like him' and in top of that he is the greatest of all time and no one can deny that.
He is been my hero for 8 years and he has become an inspiration for thousands of players, Thx for the video!
Great words by Taquito. It was so emotional when he won that year. Great video!
This channel is *PURE GOLD*
So, I had like a crappy PC for like over a decade now (I'm 18) and saved up enough money to buy a decent laptop, for playing competitive games like CS:GO, Street Fighter and so on, and I thank you, theScore esports, you were the one who got me into this beautiful community of esports, this video had me in tears at the very end, and yes I know there is some toxicity in every community but the thing that make the esports community the best, is the sheer wholesomeness which easily destroy the toxicity.
I agree..Tokido's EVO 2017 run was one of my favorite moments ever since I started watching SF in 2013.
Some of my friends invited me to Evo in 2017 despite me not knowing much about the FGC at all. It was pretty amazing to be there in person to witness this. Gave me so much respect for Tokido and all the players there.
0:30 you know you're a committed Akuma player, when you stand in the way of the projector, where the symbol is and do the pose. 😂🤣#TokidoISAkuma
This video was amazing! The quality is on another level. Incredible!! Almost cried
Awesome editing. Touching and professional
Duy Anh Pham Thank you! - Miles
4:40 was the greatest pose I've ever seen. I imagine it was a spur-of-the-moment decision as well. Absolutely hype.
I remember watching that SICK run by Tokido! Punk just wasn't mentally prepared for the Final, but hats off to Tokido for earning that crown!
Just love how he slowly wiped the smug out of Punk's face.
Punk was still a punk kid. He needed to be humbled.
i still remember watching the fight live.... the rush was real.... and the satisfaction....damn
Man i watch this channel alot, the way the narrator goes through the videos is great, and the emphases and hype on things so gooood
I'm so glad Tokido finally got the win he deserved. When I saw this at evo last year, I was a bit torn because I wanted an american to win Street Fighter, but then I had remembered how many near wins Tokido has fought so hard for, and very very consistently, that ended up rejoicing and felt happy for the guy, and the fact that he ended it all with no bitterness really sealed the deal. I was expecting some kind of trash talk, because that's what winners do in fighting games, but this time it was just wholesome.
Personally my favourite ever Evo moment. Beautiful.
I love your FGC videos! They are so great :D
This vid's amazing. Thanks for this...
4:48 That was actually really badass
I just happened to find your videos and man I'm really enjoying them.
My 10thish time watching this and still gives me chills the hairs on end. Big ups to the way you guys at theScore narrate this so good!~ ( I dont play fighting games but love them )
These videos make me cry. Please more.
7:00 he deserved that win with such an amazing read. I love your videos as much as I love fighting games, keep emm' coming. ❤️
the video is spectacular, well cared for and with the background music well cared for and guessed......very nice and stop
Long before this Tokido was my favorite fighting game player ever. The elation I felt for him when he finally got the evo win was unreal. So proud of what he achieved, absolutely legendary. He entered his perfect state and left nothing but bodies and broken dreams behind him. The only other losers bracket run that is as jaw dropping is Mango's losers brackets run at pound 3 from complete obscurity and beating literally every best player at the time along the way.
Garireo's losers run too for BlazBlue
Legit, if I ever need to get hyped about any game that's in e-sports, this is the channel I go to.
From time to time i like to come here to watch this video. Thanks to this video i purchased SFV and my love for fighting games started. Just like Tokido said: Fighting game is something so great.
What a beautiful video!
IM CRYING AND IM A SMASH4 PLAYER LOL
But seriously this is probably one of the greatest videos EVER that I’ve seen. Thank you for being on this planet to bless all of the FGC with amazing content. I’ve been getting into Tekken, and I enjoy watching SFV. Simply an amazing community, everyone crosses into each other’s games and I can see the competitive fighting spirit.
“Fighting game is something so great.”
Yes it is Tokido. Yes it is.
Tokido is amazing. Him, Daigo are my favorite from Japan. I miss SF4 Evo tournaments.
Thank you for making this video
Wow, this video is amazing
I don't play street fighter, I don't play any fighting games. Just watch Tokido story and now watching this. I LOVE IT. Amazing story, amazing man.
Amazing video , you deserve more views
Amazing video. Great job.
Love this, thanks theScore!
Thanks for watching! - Miles
He finally got it. All those years, all the sweat and tears and hard work.
The dude fucking did it....
This man is humble... pure talent , made an absolute run back. Crazy Akumo player a legend 👌🏼 well deserved Tokido
"Fighting game, is something so great."
Wiping a tear from this roller coaster of emotions containing pride and laughter.
I don't even play fighting games... But man.... I love watching this stuff... Thanks guys!
These iconic moments in Evo videos are the best
This is so well done. Good job.
Presanth Michael thank you!
this is my first evo final that I watched...
richardanthony how often do evos happens
Krack Lin once a year
Very good video. Tokido run at evo was really emotional. Amazing player. Every body loves him
This is my personal favorite moment in Evo. This is why I enjoy and love fighting games.
Oh man, story time. So I was there for that and it had to be the single most hype FGC moment I was able to be a part of. As my buddy and I were leaving Mandalay and headed back to our room at the Luxor we couldn't stop talking about that final match. We both expected so much out of Punk and to be fair, that grand finals lineup REALLY pushed the East vs West narrative to get everyone excited. We talked about how we couldn't believe Punk could choke so hard and about how it probably felt to him like he let down his country considering all of USA chanting, flags, and the massive crowd. We kinda joked around about punk a little, not in a malicious way, but like "wow that must really suck to be him". We finally get to our elevator and turn around and go figure Punk was literally right behind us the entire time. I've never seen someone look so disappointed in themselves, and I know he heard us talking about him. We stood in the elevator together for the most awkward couple minutes of my life. My buddy and I looked at eachother but decided we couldn't really say anything and he cried in the corner with one of his hypemen. I felt so bad, the dude is really a champ and at that age that kind of pressure is enormous. I really wanted to say something encouraging and I kinda regret not showing some support, I hope he realized this moment wouldn't have meant is much if he weren't already considered a champion. Punk if you're reading this. I'm sorry man, I was going to offer you a drink but if I were in your position I figured I would have rather some random in the elevator not say shit.
Incredible video. Amazing music
This takes "Nothing Personal kid" to a whole 'nother level.
4:06 FGC FYI. 5 Japanese gods: *Bottom left* Onuki ( Or Nuki), *top left* Haitani, *Center Left* Tokido, *Center Right* Daigo, *Far Right* Sakonoko. Also, even with Evo titles under his belt, Tokido still view himself nowhere close to Daigo. If you're curious to know what he meant by that, look for Kemonomichi: Daigo vs. Tokido, a "First to 10" challenge from Tokido to Daigo. But, ganbare yo, Tokido.
Damn, cool pic! I'm a big fan of Haitani, but man, if you make them fight randomly to each other, those 5 are equal. They are also the best in their own fighting game. Haitani/Sako(Vampire Saviour), Tokido(SNK vs Capcom, SFV), Daigo(SF4), Nuki(SF 3rd Strike). In my opinion, Nuki has the potential to be the strongest among them.
Nuki and Daiko have quite a long story together, they where practicaly the ones that put Competitive Fighting games on the map, back in the Darkstalkers era.
