In the entire clip of Moment 37, you can see Chun Li doing the quarter circle motion
So you see them doing a QCF and a kick the entire screen away. You see them whiff once, and then they do the motion again. At that point you know what's coming. He's planning to chip you with a super.
So it's a read, but because Justin was so desperate, it was obvious what he was trying to do. It's like Zangief walking up to you

0:56 i've watched the moment 37 clip a ton and if you zoom way in on the PIP of the players (Justin and Daigo), you can actually see Daigo's stick really clearly. he was essentially gambling on Justin doing the super and you can see Daigo tapping the stick over and over very rhythmically. I imagine that Diago was mentally thinking about baiting out the super from Justin and imagining the super starting over and over and delivering the first tap as if he knew it was coming. I've seen techniques like this in other competitive games before (not even egaming) where if you suspect a move is coming, and there is no penalty, you just spam the counter to the suspected move as much as possible. the huge thing here is Daigo suffered no penalty from spamming the opening move to the super and only increased his odds that Justin would launch the super right after Daigo started the parry. And that's not to say Daigo was randomly wailing on the stick, he was starting the parry sequence over and over waiting for the super (with likely a good backup plan for if Justin did something else). It was a genius strategy from Daigo because it had no penalty and only increased his odds of getting the full parry. Compare it to spamming something like a hadoken where it can be punished if you miss.

  • @biohazard724
    @biohazard724 2 года назад +6

This puts into perspective how absolutely bonkers moment 37 really was. Knowing what's coming it still takes 99% of people multiple tries in the comfort of their own home whereas Diago had to make this read, execute a complicated parry pattern, and not drop the follow up or he would've lost the most important match of the year (and arguably his career)

Dude I still want that Let's go Justin t-shirt with the silhouette of Chunners doing the Super and Ken in parry stance. xD I know it's celebrating a loss and might be seen as disparaging, but seeing the words in the trailing light of her kick animations driving Chun-Li forward toward the parry says enough. It was that will, that energy that Daigo HAD to parry to win. He had to answer, and the only one with the test had a name, and it pushed that moment into existence. Changing lives, stories made, good people. "I wanna be there." I told myself, and structured my life so that I knew I would go to Evo. Went three times. Reunited with childhood friends, as adults with kids of their own. Being there was surreal. You helped inspire some pretty amazing years in my life. That's a lot of damage for just a bar. Chun-li in 3s was OP AF lol. *Thank you, Justin.*

I remember playing Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online on Xbox 360 years ago back in 2013 and I remember getting the Daigo Parry once by a freak accident with my friend in an online Vs. match. We even have the same color scheme and stage as the actual EVO Moment 37 to boot.

Props to JW for learning something that possibly haunts him! And props to Daigo because this video shows just how hard it was to do! Nevermind the pressure of competition with so many watching and knowing that the slightest mistake means losing!

I love the fact that he managed to do so many variations of the parrying; including a frame perfect, pixel perfect jump parry on the sidewall where Chun-Li’s kick will miss on the final hit of her super.

I mean it made sense. Every Chun player (speaking as a middle of the road Chun SF3 player) is going to throw SA2 out when it’s going to chip out. Daigo was smart to try and lab it out beforehand because half of every SF3 tournament consists of Chun players. You’re always going to face SA2.
I was never good enough (back when I played SF3 online) to even attempt to parry it. When facing another Chun player I’d try to bait it out and jump over. But if they caught me sleeping in chip out range, I was done for.

If it's this difficult to the and pull off the "Impossible Parry" playing by yourself, anyone can only imagine how ridiculously hard it would be to pull off in a tournament with everyone screaming around you, and you yourself mashing your pad knowing there's nothing you can do other than to TRY and throw off his Parry Game.
Either way, you are one of the best player's in the game.

For those wondering why for shotos you parry 7-7-1 instead of 8-8-1 like everyone else, it's because, shoto parry animation moves the character back on each parry. Shoto's will be pushed back far enough to the point where one hit will whiff. This is why shotos have to do the full 8-8-1 parry when in the corner.

Now, to make what Daigo did even more amazing, let's put it in context: He did that shit in 2004.
Barely any internet, no RUclips. I think they might've had 3rd Strike on Dreamcast in Japan back then, but the Dreamcast was getting killed by PS2 then (which might've had 3rd Strike too by then).
He was just a man who labbed 3rd Strike SO HARD, that he could Parry a whole Hoyokusen on reaction.
    Well, he did bait it...

    Ok so clarification:
When Justin says "It's before the flash" he's technically correct- sort of. It IS before the flash, but it doesn't have to be. If you put out a parry right before the SA2 starts its animation, then the parry timer will be frozen during the animation and then be long enough to extend into the first hit. HOWEVER, if you press forward right after the 2nd (vertical) lightning strike (I believe it's exactly when you become actionable) you will still be able to parry the move. If you know your opponent is going to use their super, the "psychic parry" is the most consistent way to hit the first parry, but if you have good timing, you can do it on reaction instead. Hope this helps.
Edit: for a different visual indicator on the "perfect timing," it's right when her knee is bent a couple frames before the first kick.
