With the recent rise of FALD gaming displays and their firmware problems/hiccups it kinda start to make sense why the PG27UQ and Acer X27 took so long to hit the market and costed so much. FALD worked both in HDR and SDR, HDR worked perfectly with G-Sync, no flickering and variable overdrive in all situations, good color performance with an sRGB mode that didn't lock you out of other options and low glow panels made them quite impressive and still today everything is pretty much a sidegrade at best.

I look forward to the day when the monitor could enable backlight strobing only when there's movement on the screen. That would limit its strain on your eyes while allowing you to still see clearly when your mouse is moved quickly.
This is a really great monitor with really deep blacks, bright, great colors, quite good HDR... it's just really annoying that it sometimes goes completely black when you switch to or from HDR (the windows setting). 5 months since last update, hope they do one more to fix the black screen issue and its a solid monitor that i would highly recommend, it's the only issue i've ran into (after 2 days).

Almost the monitor I've been looking over two years for. I could probably settle for an IPS with a good FALD system but I would prefer VA , and ideally, VA with a G-Sync module since it seems like VA tends to struggle with adaptative sync below 60 FPS (which I've found is the time I need it the most). But I've been waiting since at least 2019 for a 1440p, VA, FALD and G-sync module monitor, and this is the closest I've seen to that so far.
Most content and games are still SDR + IPS contrast sucks = The bad SDR dimming is equally important to the HDR+VRR issue and also definitely a deal-breaker.

Although HDR doesn't work with VRR enabled (hopefully gets fixed with this "firmware update"), I don't think would be a deal breaker for me, as I would only use HDR for content consumption. £500 here in the UK is not a bad price for what the monitor offers, would love it even further if it was 240hz instead of the 165, but it's ok... UK prices are really bad right now, brexit, pandemic, now recession and the war in Ukraine, making things really difficult here, and no monitors on the market right now offers what this one does for this price... otherwise great review, thank you
Great review as always. Other than that, can you also give some thoughts on Viewsonic VX2882-4KP 28” 150Hz? That monitor kinda piques my interest, since it got refresh rate at 4K at affordable price, at least in my region.
As i understand you just will play at 60hz=60fps when enabling HDR , so if you are not play competetive shooters often its a good choice anyway. Subject has great responce time at 60hz
Are you going to review the AW3423DWF? I've been eyeing this monitor and saw many positive reviews on it but I'm waiting for your review. Mainly want to know if they improved the processing lag from the non F. I thought it may have been the g-sync module causing it to be unusually high and was a big reason I decided to skip the non F version.
Any chance you guys review the NZXT 27Q? It appears to be a very good 1440 display that is priced very competitively. Would love a review from people that actually know what they are talking about.
Wow, these monitors are so compelling. But unfortunately, it is not available in my country yet & even if it ever comes in stock it would be twice the price of the MSRP.
As I either program or game, but never watch media, on my monitors, a monitor that can't use HDR with VRR effectively doesn't have HDR :( Any plans to review any future firmware changes? (I don't know enough to know if such a firmware change could mess with other performance characteristics...)
I, for one, am quite excited about someone finally producing a more affordable true-HDR-monitor, been waiting for that to happen for a LONG time now! Hopefully other manufacturers take note and try to compete.
I think the firmware issues are fine, considering 2 months since this review this monitor isn't available for sale except for in select and specific countries.
are you going to do a recommended monitor for each size at 4k, 1440 ect. like last year before holiday shopping / cyber monday .. still looking for a 4k , 32in, kvm, usb c, ect. ect flat monitor, that is good for gaming, movies and productivity. lol..
I just wish this monitor came with a decent remote control, like the BenQ Morbious range. With so many settings available, clunky around the back controls aren't quick and easy to switch between, and need a basic control interface.
I really wish reviewers would stop encouraging manufacturers to spend unnecessary budget on monitor backs, encourage them to make plain flat cheap black or white plastic no one looks at the back of the monitors! Let them spend the budget on better screen tech or better OSD, better BFI, or just pass on the savings of unnecessary, wasteful back product design onto us with cheaper products. I mean yeha 500 is very cheap but it could have been 450 if it didn't have those wasteful and unsolicited lights on the back. Maybe 400 if the injection molding for the plastic was simpler and cheaper. Imagine if they the offered a SKU without a stand for 50 less again, that's 350 for a great monitor, that's mind-blowing. Only thing that's justifiable on the back of a monitor is something like the Philips ambilight thing. Even so, just offering a separate kit for that only to those who want it is still best but I wouldn't mind paying extra for that. To my knowledge Philips holds patents on that so other manufacturers can't do a similar thing so yeah, just plain cheap plastic, no complicated designs, no expensive injection molding, no pointless lights that avoid you from having a true dark room for best content consumption. thank you! very much
pretty sure @9:25 its due to HDR not local dimming algorhythm since multiple sites like tftcentral show no increase in lag when using local dimming in SDR mode, but you said it was because of local dimming
Would it be possible/legal for you to release the files needed for calibration for the srgb color gamut? I know it technically is different for every monitor but these tempest monitors appear to have all the same bad red channel compression
So is local dimming always going to be only for HDR content then? Because I'd love to have an IPS monitor with local dimming to help increase contrast when watching, playing or creating SDR content. The extra contrast would be very beneficial but I'm not about to go and get an OLED when my screen is stuck on a video editing timeline most of the time.
the new firmware for the 4k version now local dimming in sdr, new firmware for this monitor is being released this week so hopefully it has the same feature, will be buying if so
I keep watching reviews, but I think I've narrowed it down to two models. Either the Alienware AW3423DW or the LG LG 38GN95B-B. Cant decide. I wouldnt mind the extra 4 inches of the LG (not to mention the extra pixels with it being a 1600p monitor) but I've also never really experienced OLED or Quantum Dot. I have a secondary Nano IPS monitor and really like it, but this is an agonizing choice being that both monitors are $1k+. Anyony have any advice or experience with either or both of these monitors?

the big deal breaker for me is that you have to turn off LD for SDR, the image will look washed out in SDR because 900:1 contrast ratio is too low
you don’t ~have~ to turn off local dimming, that’s just what Tim recommends
Best monitors of 2022 please!
UK prices are really bad right now, brexit, pandemic, now recession and the war in Ukraine, making things really difficult here, and no monitors on the market right now offers what this one does for this price... otherwise great review, thank you
Looks promising, but will have to wait and see how they address the issues.
Great review as always. Other than that, can you also give some thoughts on Viewsonic VX2882-4KP 28” 150Hz? That monitor kinda piques my interest, since it got refresh rate at 4K at affordable price, at least in my region.
Are you going to do a best of video when it's nearing Black Friday/Christmas?
I wish I could find it in stock
As i understand you just will play at 60hz=60fps when enabling HDR , so if you are not play competetive shooters often its a good choice anyway. Subject has great responce time at 60hz
Are you going to review the AW3423DWF? I've been eyeing this monitor and saw many positive reviews on it but I'm waiting for your review. Mainly want to know if they improved the processing lag from the non F. I thought it may have been the g-sync module causing it to be unusually high and was a big reason I decided to skip the non F version.
FINALLY A GOOD REVIEW FOR THIS
Any chance you guys review the NZXT 27Q? It appears to be a very good 1440 display that is priced very competitively. Would love a review from people that actually know what they are talking about.
When are you guys gonna review the ViewSonic 32″ XG321UG
Finally someone thought of low budget customers no need for super huge above 30" 4k, wish they make 25" or 24" versions.
CM did have 24" but it's not mini LED.
Wow, these monitors are so compelling. But unfortunately, it is not available in my country yet & even if it ever comes in stock it would be twice the price of the MSRP.
It would be great if you could make another Video on the update!
As I either program or game, but never watch media, on my monitors, a monitor that can't use HDR with VRR effectively doesn't have HDR :(
Any plans to review any future firmware changes?
(I don't know enough to know if such a firmware change could mess with other performance characteristics...)
It's fixed
I, for one, am quite excited about someone finally producing a more affordable true-HDR-monitor, been waiting for that to happen for a LONG time now! Hopefully other manufacturers take note and try to compete.
I've purchased this model and it arrived today here in the UK with firmware 1.2 could you please make a guide for how to use this monitor please?
Dear Mub,
Do you plan on reviewing the msi MAG321QR soon?
Seems like the most economical 32 inch 1440p ips 165hz monitor.
Thanks
the wallpaper at minute 2:25, how can i find it ? looks nice :)
I can't seem to find any info on when this is coming to Australia. Does anybody have an idea?
I think the firmware issues are fine, considering 2 months since this review this monitor isn't available for sale except for in select and specific countries.
are you going to do a recommended monitor for each size at 4k, 1440 ect. like last year before holiday shopping / cyber monday .. still looking for a 4k , 32in, kvm, usb c, ect. ect flat monitor, that is good for gaming, movies and productivity. lol..
This is my monitor 2k mini led good contrast ratio👍
Can we get a review for the MSI OPTIX G273QF 27" ? :D
I just wish this monitor came with a decent remote control, like the BenQ Morbious range. With so many settings available, clunky around the back controls aren't quick and easy to switch between, and need a basic control interface.
Hey, you make rock solid videos. Thank for that.
Did you not find extreme color banding issues when OCing this monitor to 165 hz?
To my knowledge Philips holds patents on that so other manufacturers can't do a similar thing so yeah, just plain cheap plastic, no complicated designs, no expensive injection molding, no pointless lights that avoid you from having a true dark room for best content consumption. thank you! very much
Odyssey G6 review before black friday??
I am really hoping for a review of the Alienware AW2723DF
pretty sure @9:25 its due to HDR not local dimming algorhythm since multiple sites like tftcentral show no increase in lag when using local dimming in SDR mode, but you said it was because of local dimming
I cant find this in Canada at all.
How about the LG 32GQ850-B???
Please put out an update video when they update it!
Would it be possible/legal for you to release the files needed for calibration for the srgb color gamut? I know it technically is different for every monitor but these tempest monitors appear to have all the same bad red channel compression
Is gsync enabled in all games without any problems?
So is local dimming always going to be only for HDR content then? Because I'd love to have an IPS monitor with local dimming to help increase contrast when watching, playing or creating SDR content. The extra contrast would be very beneficial but I'm not about to go and get an OLED when my screen is stuck on a video editing timeline most of the time.
the new firmware for the 4k version now local dimming in sdr, new firmware for this monitor is being released this week so hopefully it has the same feature, will be buying if so
Low contrast ratio in SDR= garbage. People don't realize how important that is.
Can you test the color banding at 165hz? I've noticed it's very noticeable over 144hz.
The Alienware is miles better
Can you please review the Dell AW3423DWF
Now er just need this monitor and the pg27u in 32”
omg...what is that thumbnail man..i thought it's an ultra wide one
was so happy
i want an ultra wide 2k+ hdr monitor
that won't cost an arm and a leg...and a kidney
Hi Sir, please review this monitor Philips 275M8RZ. thank you in advance
Cooler Master needs to improve their Master Plus software/firmware too.
