I currently have two herniated discs L4/L5, L5/S1 as well as some moderate degeneration in my sacroiliac joints. My physiotherapist recommended using a recumbent stationary bike for part of my recovery (I could barely walk, otherwise I would be using a treadmill). I was using an upright bike at my local gym for 2 weeks before I switched to a recumbent bike once I received it at home and let me say that it made I big difference for me. The recumbent bike felt much better for me.
As the doctor compared the hip and knee angles imposed by the two bikes, the young woman on the upright bike was leaning backward at rest, her hands not even reaching toward the handlebars. Had she instead assumed a realistic riding position, the hip and knee angles would have been more similar.
Thank you I have both I like the recumbent because I have a low back problem and I have good back support I raise the seat that helps the sciatic the knees, hips . Excellent video
@@frankg6563 yeah it is odd I've heard different things from different sources on which is better for reducing stress on joints and such... I believe the recumbent is better for "lighter" workouts
Oh Boy! Am I ever glad I watched this video before buying. I had a hip replaced and also have a history of on-again, off-again sciatic problems. Thanks for the heads up; I was leaning towards a recumbant...changed my mind. Thank You!!
Same story here, had hip surgery as a kid and have had problems with it my entire life. Nearly made the mistake of purchasing a recumbant. Luckily I found this video, very grateful!
I was set on getting a recumbent bike because its more relaxed and laid back and hey youre just trying to get blood flow in your legs after all right... but your point about hip flexers mobilty range sold me. Sitting all day at a desk is the most major cause of my lack of mobility today. It would make semse not to get a bike that doesnt help reverse that haha. The foot pedal thimg is a good point too
Thank you so very much for this video! It was very informative! I recently had both of my hips replaced and was looking into purchasing a bike to help with my therapy. This information was what I needed to hear. Thank you again.
Weird. I have bad knees, degenerative lower spine issues, and sciatica. My doctor and physical therapist both recommended a recumbent bike over an upright, for all three problems. Now I'm confused. 🤣
Never knew that about the sciatica which may flare up with the recumbent. This is probably the only video which mentions that so I appreciate that. I was leaning towards the recumbent at the beginning but now I may go for the upright one.
For overweight people you forgot to mention the most important advantage of getting a recumbent bike ist that you sit basically on a chair and that helps a lot with the seat, which on normal indoor bike often causes pain when you sit on longer. It's also better for your back.
on average i do 7 miles on a recumbent and 3 miles on a upright. if i got one for home i would choose the upright cause it takes less space. at the gym i use both to ride 10 miles everytime i hit the gym.
Thank you! This was suuuuuper helpful! I'm bike shopping so I can lose weight because I have a bulging disk (L2-L3). I had no idea the recumbent bike would put pressure on it!
I am not sure if this guy knows what he's talking about. Recumbent bikes are supposed to be easier for people who have back, ,hip and knee issues because they are easier on the joints.
I'm a PT, and I can tell you he is absolutely spot on. When you measure the joint angles on a recumbent bike there is a lot more torsional stress on the joints. This has been well established in the literature, but there are a lot of personal trainers on the internet spreading mis-information.
I have not been able to use a recumbent bike for years due to back and hip joint pain. Now that I had my hip replaced, I am able to use a recumbent again. So recumbent bikes aren't automatically better, it just depends on your particular issue with your joints
glad i came across this info....was trying to decide which to get...i currently get cortisone shots in my lower spine and have pain down the back of my legs......UPRIGHT BIKE it is then...cheers thx again
I can't find a clip on the pros/cons/risk/benefits of a stationary bike versus a real bike cycling? I like cycling. But, I'm scared to death of texting drivers KILLING me. I tapped the thumbs up 👍 button to feed the algorithm monsters.
This is the complete opposite to everything I've ever heard about the recumbent and opposite to what I have experienced myself. I've struggled with back pain for years, especially with my sciatic nerve. The upright causes me a lot of pain. On the other hand the recumbent doesn't cause me any discomfort.
This guy says the exact opposite, I had back/hip problem due to gym, went to physical therapy, they put me on recumbent bike, this is the one if you have lower back, hip tightness
I have to take exception to this video.... Yes, I see the extra flexion on the recumbent bike. But the presenter seems to overlook the most important difference between these two... The Real Advantage to a recumbent bike is that the Seat supports all your upper body weight (actually almost all your body weight) compared to a traditional bike where only some of your weight is on the seat... as you pedal around you place much of your full body weight upon each pedal stroke. From a muscle-excercising standpoint, this is far less work than when seated. So the recumbent lets you work the muscles more while compressing the lower joints under less stress. Is this not correct? 💁♂️
for ME personally, the upright hurts less. Mainly because with an upright I dont have to bend my knee as much. A recumbent causes my knee to bend further.. which made my knee burn. I have no pain at all when I do an upright bike.
I have been using a upright bike for 1 hour a day and the seat really ends up hurting my bottom. I wonder if a recumbent will solve the issue? since you can lean back and put your weight back it might put less stress downwards.
I've tried both and I can say as someone who rides mountain bike alot the recumbent bike is alot easier on the bum! Riding a bike lots and far you have to develop a tolerance for the bike seat your bum will hurt feel bruised first few times
@OrthoEvalPal I have had major sciatica issue 3 years ago, also blood circulation issue due to nerve pinching at l4 l5 , pinching was not major but even after 3 years it pains, i can run, or pickup weight.. and sometimes I get pain in middle back like hell, I have recovered alot by resting, even my muscle got stiff at neck and hand nervers are pinched sometimes if I do more exercise..can you please let me know if I can use upright cycle daily 1 hour as I want to reduce weight
Hello sir I am From Pakistan i am confused between upright bike and Recumbent bike,, i hv a bit pain in me knees so please tell me which bike is more suitable for me i want to loss weight i am around 105 kgs.. please help
Aside from the factors that you have pointed out here, does one offer more of, or a better exercise experience? Which one will help me lose weight faster?
i hate the recumbent bike! my knees bend more on it which makes it hurt.. and i have short legs so i have to scoot closer to reach the pedals with my feet, which makes my knees hit me in the belly and boobs when i pedal! super uncomfortable. I agree with this guy that the upright is easier on the knees.
Literally every doctor I have talked to recommends a Recumbent over an upright bike specially if the user has knee issues or hip issues. This video makes no sense. In fact, the very fact that doctors recommend people with knee and hip issues to use mini bikes for knee motion makes this whole video sound extremely misleading.
The person on the upright is just sitting there. That's not how you ride. You have to lean forward to hold the handlebars. When you do that the body angle becomes much like the recumbent rider.
Both the girls are like “jeez dad do I have to be here” lol good info!
🤣🤣

I hate those little bike seats on upright bikes. My PT introduced me to the recumbent bike. I love it.
How does your butt feel now ? I did buy one and unfortunately it did have bad seat so how about you? .
Thank you I have both I like the recumbent because I have a low back problem and I have good back support I raise the seat that helps the sciatic the knees, hips . Excellent video
Interesting , I’m 60 just had a total knee replacement and the Orthopaedic Surgeon recommended a recumbent bike over the stand up .
I had both knees replaced and the hospital therapy team put me on a recumbent machine. Much more comfortable for me. I bought a recumbent for my home.

Yes recumbent bike
I have both and the upright seat hurts my butt. I recommend the recumbent.
I agree
What helped my decision was going to a gym and using both machines...That is how I made my decision.
So, which did you decide on, and why?
@@airadaimagery692
Recumbent bike. I went to a couple of gyms prior and it was easier on my knees and comfortable on the tush..
Me too! It was a good choice.
Me too
Excellent video. The first I have seen that points out a couple of important potential negatives about recumbent bikes.
Glad it was helpful Fred!

I've also been thinking which would be better for my hip arthritis
Same story here, had hip surgery as a kid and have had problems with it my entire life.

You all are stupid for listening to this person.
Team Recumbent

I would recommend trying them both out. They each have their pro's and cons
Upright position puts too much load on in my lower back and sitting bones. Recumbent helps spread the load. Got to find what works for you.
Absolutely!. They are made for different reasons.
Me too ! No more lower back pain with the Recumbent.
Never knew that about the sciatica which may flare up with the recumbent. This is probably the only video which mentions that so I appreciate that. I was leaning towards the recumbent at the beginning but now I may go for the upright one.
Thank You, so its an upright bike for my 2 nine week post op knee replacements.

What brand is this bike or which do you recommend. I need the Upright because of hip arthritis. Thanks! Very informative!!!
Thank you for the information, I just want to buy one recumbent, but I have knees problem, so thank you again.
You are welcome Maria!
But what about for physical therapy when you work on your achilles and post tibial tendon strength?
on average i do 7 miles on a recumbent and 3 miles on a upright. if i got one for home i would choose the upright cause it takes less space. at the gym i use both to ride 10 miles everytime i hit the gym.
What's better for weak hips and knees to make them stronger? Have unsteady gait and imbalance.

Upright IMO
Is 3 miles on a stationary bike the same as walking 3 miles?
Not having back support is a killer for me

Hmm.. to me it seems like the right one has more of the straight body position (especially in the back) of most recumbents. And vica versa.

I have always preferred the upright bike unless you have issues balancing while sitting

Riding a bike helps you to lose weight, just get started with it :)

Upright causes ED.
Upright is not good for your prostate and recumbent wins there.
boo. zero talk about muscles worked and differences there.
