This dish is lovely. I have cook books from NFLD with sweet and sour meatballs in it. I cooked them always while my kids were growing up. You are wonderful. Thank you
This reminds me of Waikiki Meatballs, which is an old Betty Crocker recipe I love. Waikiki meatballs has ground ginger added to the meatballs, and the sauce is made with pineapple tidbits and green pepper. It’s served over rice, too. I guess I’m going to be making it in the next few days…
Oh my nice! I'm glad you enjoyed our recipe and its nice to have these ground beef meals I have a soup recipe you may like as well, this is the link www.bonitaskitchen.com/recipe/ground-beef-barley-soup/ and visit www.bonitaskitchen.com for many affordable recipes. Enjoy :) Bonita
My husband is a "meat and potatoes" guy...not me. I am not vegetarian, but meat is not my favorite on the plate! I made this for supper last night and both of us just loved it! Most delicious meatballs I've ever had!! I ate every one that i had on my plate!! Thank you so much for your video on make this!!! :)
This looks delicious, Bonita. Thank You for sharing this one with Us. I love how You made Your Own Sweet and Sour. Sauce. Although, I don’t mind plumb Sauce from a Chinese Restaurant. I don’t like the kind that comes in a jar is usually tooo sweet and it doesn’t have any sourness to it. I don’t like it. YUCK!!! Your recipe sounds and looks very delicious!!! Again Thank You, Bonita. GOD BLESS YOU, RAYMOND AND ALL OF YOUR LOVED ONES!!! ✝️🙏🏽😊👍🏼❤️👋🏼
When I'm making meatballs, I most often use mild Italian sausage, peel off the skins, then form them into balls of ad hoc size. It works for me. As to "sweet and sour" canned pineapple provides the sour, then a bit of sherry provides the sweet, a bunch of minced garlic, a bunch of microplane grated ginger, some cornstarch in the sherry and away you go. Gotta be onion in it somewhere. You can put red or green bell peppers into it. I think broccoli and/or baby bok choy could go in to bulk it up a bit and feed more people.
That sounds lovely and you know adding all of those ingredient's sounds so tasty. But to keep it more affordable simple works, use the food you have in your fridge. Sometimes getting creative with meals and having those veggies hidden in there helps your kids enjoy them too. Thank you so much for stopping by, I always love to get your tasty spin on my plan old fashion meal. :) haha :) Bonita
Bonita.. Bonita .. Bonita.. this made my mouth water ...... I would have made this for to nights supper but had left over clam chowder..... thanks for sharing ,, I am making this for supper soon ........ Robbie for PEI
Hi Robbie: Hahaha thank you for you message, I'm glad you are eating your leftovers. This recipes is so delicious and its also good for leftovers. Enjoy Bonita
Hi Amanda. Thank you so much for your message and for stopping by, I agree totally its not a Newfoundland meal. But it is a recipe we have done for over 30 years and nothing in this recipe said it was a Chinese recipe, only homemade sweet and sour sauce with steamed rice and ground beef meat balls. I can even remember my dad making these and even the sauce for cooking his moose meat. I hope you are having a lovely day and take care. :) Bonita
Oh hey! You're filming from Newfoundland, my bio dad's side of the family is from Nova Scotia but I was raised in Ontario. It's nice to see chefs representing other areas of Canada outside of Ontario and Quebec. :)
You are very welcome Tiff for stopping by and I'm glad to share with you our spin on Meatballs and rice. Thank you for stopping by and please check out more of our recipes here or www.bonitaskitchen.com :) Bonita

Hi Bonita, thanks for the delicious supper tonight!:) Tried this recipe and it was a hit. I have more time to try more of your recipes:) Stopped off at Bonita's kitchen, now I'm off to laugh my sides off at Jimmy Flynn's jokes on Facebook LOL. Everyone stay safe and healthy.
That is so wonderful and I'm glad you enjoyed our recipe and thank you for letting us know. We seen Jimmy Flynn in concert years ago and after got together with him for a few tunes and of courses some laughs. He is just a funny in person as he is on the videos, enjoy and you as well stay safe and have a Happy Easter weekend. :) Bonita
@@bonitaskitchen That must have been so much fun:) He was featured in a CTV segment with his wife. She is just as funny as Jimmy....great team LOL. He was talking about his "live" entertainment on Facebook. Great laughs:) You, Raymond and family stay safe. Happy Easter to you guys too:)
Anne Wheadon Oh my that is so wonderful, thank you for letting us know and for visiting our channel. We hope you enjoyed it and have a lovely day. Bonita
So my son asked what we were having for dinner, and I told him "Meatballs and Rice." I then opened up RUclips, and this video was at the top of the list. I was going to make a pork gravy for the meal, but maybe I'm supposed to have Sweet and Sour instead.
great video and thank you for making it. One small observation I would make is that the incidental music is sometimes much louder than the commentary. Otherwise very enjoyable.
Thank you Jonathan for stopping by and for watching our video. We do appreciate your feedback, I hope you get to make this recipe sometime. Enjoy to the fullest! :) Bonita
oh my that is so wonderful, we are on the east coast of Canada and your time on this message it was 5:30 am, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR MESSAGE. :) Bonita
sweet and sour meatballs seem to me to be something that came into Newfoundland culture sometime in the 70's. Traditions do change from time to time. my brother told me that snack packs (chicken and chips with gravy and dressings) are hard to come by these days. In Marystown anyway. but anyway sweet and sour meatballs the way newfoundlanders make is newfoundland food.
Yes Bob for sure, the traditions have changed some for sure. The younger generation got their own way of doing things and our elders and passing away. I hope that having our channel here for everyone to pop in and out to find old and new traditional recipes. I thank you for stopping by and enjoying our video and recipe, you can also find over 250 recipes posted to my website www.bonitaskitchen.com if you like to search for more. Happy Father's Day if it applies. :) Bonita
Thanks for Supper Bonita = Yummy!! I have tried many of your recipes and have watched most of them - The thing I think I like most about your recipes is that you're a Newfoundlander and we have most of the ingredients already in our kitchen. You are awesome!!

Yes indeed, all you would need to do is cover it with a lid and slow cook it in the sauce it would be lovely. Enjoy and thank you for stopping by. :) Bonita

Flour? As in wheat flour? I haven't heard of a flour allergy but if you can eat breadcrumbs, they are made from flour.... Unless you are allergic to raw flour before it is made into something.
