  • Leonard and Hearns fought for the Undisputed World Welterweight Championship. Leonard was the WBC champion, and Hearns was the WBA champion.
    The fight was promoted by Main Events. This was their first major promotion.
    In his 2011 autobiography, The Big Fight: My Life In and Out of the Ring, Leonard wrote: "Everything was proceeding according to plan until, about two weeks before the bout, one of my sparring partners, Odell Hadley, accidentally struck me on my left eye with his elbow. . . . By the next morning, my eye started to swell, and there was talk of possibly postponing the fight. . . . There would be no postponement. I was determined to fight on September 16 as long as I could breathe."
    On September 3, 1981, a right hand by Hearns broke the jaw of sparring partner Marlon Starling, who had been scheduled to headline the live card accompanying the closed-circuit telecast at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut.
    Leonard was guaranteed $8 million, and Hearns was assured a minimum of $5 million. Each boxer also received a percentage of the revenue. Leonard ended up with more than $11 million, and Hearns got about $8 million.
    The fight was shown live on closed circuit television in 298 locations, with 1.5 million seats in the United States and Canada.
    Pay-per-view was available to one million homes in 24 cities in the United States.
    The fight was televised live or delayed in about 50 countries. Some 300 million people worldwide saw the unification match.
    HBO secured the rebroadcast rights for $750,000 and aired the fight on September 26, 1981.
    Tickets were priced from $50 up to $500 for ringside seats.
    A sellout crowd of 23,618 attended the fight in a temporary outdoor arena erected on the Caesars Palace tennis courts.
    The fight grossed over $35 million. The live gate was $5.9 million, and the revenue from pay-per-view was $7.5 million.
    Leonard, who opened as an 8 to 5 favorite, was a 7 to 5 underdog by fight time.
    In a UPI poll, 34 of 48 writers picked Leonard to win.

    THIS IS THE REASON I’m confused about the DEFINITION of Boxer vs Puncher these LAST 24 years. In MY OPINION the Philly Shell is NOT a BOXERS TECHNIQUE, it’s definitely a DEFENSIVE TECHNIQUE but not a BOXERS technique because the FEET ARE STILL STATIONARY (PLANTED WITHOUT MOVEMENT). People characterize BIVOLS technique against CANELO as Boxing but if you really watch the film YES he had head movement and PERRY DEFENSE but HIS FEET WAS STILL STATIONARY. He (BIVOL) was still standing in front of Canelo to be hit, so how is that considered boxing? If you look at Thomas Hearns in this fight HE WAS CLEARLY THE PUNCHER out of the TWO but his FOOTWORK still MAKES HIM A PUNCHER with A BOXERS FOOTWORK because he can CONSTANTLY CIRCLE WITH MOVEMENT without LOSING HIS ABSOLUTE PUNCHING POWER. Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, and Evander Holyfield IN MY OPINION are considered MORE PURER BOXERS THAN in today’s boxing style from Featherweight to Heavyweight from Round 1 to Round 6 BECAUSE just for those 6 ROUNDS they had MORE CIRCLER FOOTWORK for 6 Rounds than 99.5% of the FIGHTERS TODAY in a ENTIRE FIGHT. Because by round 7 I didn’t expect those Heavyweights TO STAY ON THEIR TOES because the LEGS started getting heavy BECAUSE OF THE WEIGHT CLASS. To me to prepare to fight someone like Beterbiev you would have to SPAR FOR 2:00 minute (36 Rounds EVERY SESSION) to PREPARE TO STAY ON YOUR TOES for the ENTIRE 12 Rounds because YOU WILL DEFINITELY NEED YOUR FOOTWORK (BICYCLE) and to KEEP YOUR ABSOLUTE POWER because you KNOW HE’S COMING LIKE A TANK. YOU WOULD NEED THE FOOTWORK OF SUGAR RAY LEONARD and the POWER & POP of THOMAS HEARNS and the ONLY WAY to sustain this is by LONG SPARRING SESSIONS. NO LATE NIGHT BOOTY CALLS, DRINKING WITH YOUR FRIENDS, or BLAZING THE GUNJA: really PUTTING IN WORK to prepare for a WAR IN THE RING. YOU HAVE TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS OF TODAY to completely DEDICATE YOURSELF TO YOUR CRAFT; it TRULY DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH you are willing to push your LIMITS IN THE DEEP END OF THE OCEAN 🌊

    My all time favorite fighter right up there with Muhammad Ali! Sugar Ray Leonard carried the torch after Ali retired, and he did so with class and dignity. I feel extremely fortunate to have met both of these great men when I was very young back in the early 80s. Both of them treated me so kind and took their time talking with me and being everything I'd hoped for. I only met Ali once, and got to sit with him for lunch at a hotel restaurant. He was so great and even pretended to punch me after lunch on his way out. It's something I'll never forget. But I've had the opportunity to see Sugar Ray a few times over the years. He's so nice that he still leaves kind messages to my 2 little nephews occasionally. Back when I first met him, I asked him who would he fight next if he beats Hearns. He corrected me and said, "WHEN I beat Hearns." We both laughed, but he meant it, and knew he would win. Just wanted to share this with all the true Ali/Leonard fans!🥊🥊

    One of the announcers must have bet big on Tommy. In the 13th he kept saying that Hearns wasn't hurt although he was obviously wobbling, then stressed that it wasn't a knockdown, then kept pointing out that Ray kept punching while the ref was breaking them up, and so on. says that Ray's getting tired, then shuts up completely when Tommy did go down.
    Love this fight. One of the best ever. Thanks for the cool edit and upload!

      Hagler walked right into the best Hearns could deliver, got hurt, recovered, and pounded away relentlessly at the Hit-Man. Leonard did the same in this fight, but spread it over 14 rounds. Sugar Ray fought more cautiously & was patient, wearing Hearns down. Hagler went for it all right away, enduring some real punishment, and put Thomas away early.

      Sugar Ray was NOT! better than hagler, I loved sugar Ray up to the moment he fought hagler, he ran that whole fight, he would do little pitter patter punches in the clinch and then run, I lost respect for him and the boxing world, how in the hell you take away a champion's belt running and not knocking him out, it was totally bias, and year's later sugar Ray's wife, divorced him and did a tell book about her marriage to him, she stated he was verbally and physically abusive to her and he also did cocaine on a regular basis, when they asked him about the book and the things she said, he just said that she was a great mother as well as a wife, and he didn't refute the aligations.

    Ask Spence, Danny Garcia, Thurman n Crawford how long They would last when fighting boxers of Leonard's, Hearn's, Hagler's or Duran's calibres. The four kings would embarrass GGG n Canello. Later, They ruled middle weight for a period of time. Leonard n Hearns even conquered Light Heavy divs.

      Everyone would be sleeping. Duran and cuevas could absolutely punch....but it went how it should - and hearns hit much harder than both. Unless hearns is making mistakes, fighting an iron chin aggresive and QUICK demon - he was going to be the winner. Only by war hearns was beatable - and even than - the claims of his soft chin are overated. 3 men kod him: leonard at 147 (tommy remained on his feet), hagler at 160 (after hearns took some bombs in the 1st two rounds), and barkley - all these were able to punch pretty good. Its not like he was kod by a paulie malignaggi jab....

    sintesis? un boxeador vs un adefesio, uno dio espectaculo de pugilato y se banco al bestial resistente... y el otro no entendio que en el boxeo no es suficiente aguantar golpes y ser animal.

      I’m the one of biggest mayweather fans, he’s literally my Home Screen. But Leonard is an animal. Floyd could outbox and win a decision but no way Floyd wins by KO.

    Salvador Sanchez esta por encima de estos 2 en mi opinión.

      Salvador Sanchez fue un gran boxeador y su muerte temprana lo inmortalizo, pero no le llegaba a los talones al gran Sugar Ray Leonard

    • @peperamos7275
      @peperamos7275 4 года назад +4

      Creó que no has visto bien, Sánchez recibía demasiado castigo,y esas cosas no se podían permitir frente a Hearns o Leonard.

      Salvador Sanchez mil veces mejor que estos 2 tirapiedras

    • @peperamos7275
      @peperamos7275 4 года назад +2

      Leonard y Hearns tenían mucho mejor juego de piernas que Sánchez, y obviamente mejor pegada,y ni hablamos de un hipotético enfrentamiento contra Hagler...lo hubiera hecho polvo.
