- Leonard and Hearns fought for the Undisputed World Welterweight Championship. Leonard was the WBC champion, and Hearns was the WBA champion.
The fight was promoted by Main Events. This was their first major promotion.
In his 2011 autobiography, The Big Fight: My Life In and Out of the Ring, Leonard wrote: "Everything was proceeding according to plan until, about two weeks before the bout, one of my sparring partners, Odell Hadley, accidentally struck me on my left eye with his elbow. . . . By the next morning, my eye started to swell, and there was talk of possibly postponing the fight. . . . There would be no postponement. I was determined to fight on September 16 as long as I could breathe."
On September 3, 1981, a right hand by Hearns broke the jaw of sparring partner Marlon Starling, who had been scheduled to headline the live card accompanying the closed-circuit telecast at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut.
Leonard was guaranteed $8 million, and Hearns was assured a minimum of $5 million. Each boxer also received a percentage of the revenue. Leonard ended up with more than $11 million, and Hearns got about $8 million.
The fight was shown live on closed circuit television in 298 locations, with 1.5 million seats in the United States and Canada.
Pay-per-view was available to one million homes in 24 cities in the United States.
The fight was televised live or delayed in about 50 countries. Some 300 million people worldwide saw the unification match.
HBO secured the rebroadcast rights for $750,000 and aired the fight on September 26, 1981.
Tickets were priced from $50 up to $500 for ringside seats.
A sellout crowd of 23,618 attended the fight in a temporary outdoor arena erected on the Caesars Palace tennis courts.
The fight grossed over $35 million. The live gate was $5.9 million, and the revenue from pay-per-view was $7.5 million.
Leonard, who opened as an 8 to 5 favorite, was a 7 to 5 underdog by fight time.
In a UPI poll, 34 of 48 writers picked Leonard to win.

Round 14 and still faster than lightweights now in 1st round? Is Sugar Ray even human??💀
THIS IS THE REASON I’m confused about the DEFINITION of Boxer vs Puncher these LAST 24 years. In MY OPINION the Philly Shell is NOT a BOXERS TECHNIQUE, it’s definitely a DEFENSIVE TECHNIQUE but not a BOXERS technique because the FEET ARE STILL STATIONARY (PLANTED WITHOUT MOVEMENT). People characterize BIVOLS technique against CANELO as Boxing but if you really watch the film YES he had head movement and PERRY DEFENSE but HIS FEET WAS STILL STATIONARY. He (BIVOL) was still standing in front of Canelo to be hit, so how is that considered boxing? If you look at Thomas Hearns in this fight HE WAS CLEARLY THE PUNCHER out of the TWO but his FOOTWORK still MAKES HIM A PUNCHER with A BOXERS FOOTWORK because he can CONSTANTLY CIRCLE WITH MOVEMENT without LOSING HIS ABSOLUTE PUNCHING POWER. Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, and Evander Holyfield IN MY OPINION are considered MORE PURER BOXERS THAN in today’s boxing style from Featherweight to Heavyweight from Round 1 to Round 6 BECAUSE just for those 6 ROUNDS they had MORE CIRCLER FOOTWORK for 6 Rounds than 99.5% of the FIGHTERS TODAY in a ENTIRE FIGHT. Because by round 7 I didn’t expect those Heavyweights TO STAY ON THEIR TOES because the LEGS started getting heavy BECAUSE OF THE WEIGHT CLASS. To me to prepare to fight someone like Beterbiev you would have to SPAR FOR 2:00 minute (36 Rounds EVERY SESSION) to PREPARE TO STAY ON YOUR TOES for the ENTIRE 12 Rounds because YOU WILL DEFINITELY NEED YOUR FOOTWORK (BICYCLE) and to KEEP YOUR ABSOLUTE POWER because you KNOW HE’S COMING LIKE A TANK. YOU WOULD NEED THE FOOTWORK OF SUGAR RAY LEONARD and the POWER & POP of THOMAS HEARNS and the ONLY WAY to sustain this is by LONG SPARRING SESSIONS. NO LATE NIGHT BOOTY CALLS, DRINKING WITH YOUR FRIENDS, or BLAZING THE GUNJA: really PUTTING IN WORK to prepare for a WAR IN THE RING. YOU HAVE TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS OF TODAY to completely DEDICATE YOURSELF TO YOUR CRAFT; it TRULY DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH you are willing to push your LIMITS IN THE DEEP END OF THE OCEAN 🌊
My all time favorite fighter right up there with Muhammad Ali! Sugar Ray Leonard carried the torch after Ali retired, and he did so with class and dignity. I feel extremely fortunate to have met both of these great men when I was very young back in the early 80s. Both of them treated me so kind and took their time talking with me and being everything I'd hoped for. I only met Ali once, and got to sit with him for lunch at a hotel restaurant. He was so great and even pretended to punch me after lunch on his way out. It's something I'll never forget. But I've had the opportunity to see Sugar Ray a few times over the years. He's so nice that he still leaves kind messages to my 2 little nephews occasionally. Back when I first met him, I asked him who would he fight next if he beats Hearns. He corrected me and said, "WHEN I beat Hearns." We both laughed, but he meant it, and knew he would win. Just wanted to share this with all the true Ali/Leonard fans!🥊🥊
They seem to move much more in that era
Great fight
Agreed, plus they took more chances. Only Pac Man would have survived that era.
@@michaelhubbard4023 Mayweather, Crawford and Spence would too.
What are you talking about? They fought toe to toe most of the fight.. of course Ray had the Ali bounce early in the fight but so do a lot of fighters today… then it slows down.. keep in mind these guys are very light weight.
One of the announcers must have bet big on Tommy. In the 13th he kept saying that Hearns wasn't hurt although he was obviously wobbling, then stressed that it wasn't a knockdown, then kept pointing out that Ray kept punching while the ref was breaking them up, and so on. says that Ray's getting tired, then shuts up completely when Tommy did go down.
Love this fight. One of the best ever. Thanks for the cool edit and upload!
totally agree.........some commentators are just trash......
Leonard, Hearns and Hagler, the three kings of 1980's boxing, between them some real epic battles, bravo.
Don't forget Duran
UM roberto Duran?
@@poolplexer quite right sir, I didn't have time to give them all a mention.
Duran?
Absolutely those 3 were it’s absolute top 3 of that era!!
Ray Leonard was such a good fighter one of all times greatest
Yeah, Ray was never a disappointment he def made boxing for me exiting my father used to watch all the fights for a while i hated boxing but fighters like Ray, Hearns, Hagler, and finally Mike Tyson made boxing (for me) the greatest sport. It also made me despise Duran and the bully image he portrayed.
@@Memnoch67 ray Leonard is the intelligent boxer epitomized

He was a talent, no doubt. Very smart too he knew how to push the rules such as hitting on the break. He also had amazing cardio. Much respect for Leonard. Such a shamed he took so many beatings and how he ended up.
Hearns was 6'1" tall
Had the reach and legs of a 7 ft tall Basketball player but the torso of a 5 ft tall man.
A jab like Larry Holmes.
A right like Joe Louis.
How does one prepare for that ?
Ask Hagler? 🤣
Hagler walked right into the best Hearns could deliver, got hurt, recovered, and pounded away relentlessly at the Hit-Man. Leonard did the same in this fight, but spread it over 14 rounds. Sugar Ray fought more cautiously & was patient, wearing Hearns down. Hagler went for it all right away, enduring some real punishment, and put Thomas away early.
@@YESJesusisLord100 nice analysis.
Tommy.broke.his hand vs hagler
Tommy hand everything but enurance smh!
The distance these men went is truly astonishing...
Once upon a time, there was no round limit. I heard about one match which went over 100 rounds. 🤔
I saw this fight live on television back then and here am I watching it on youtube and hoping for a different result.
I still can't believe the ref called it after the second knock down, there was only a little over a minutes left.
Hearns boxed beautifully in this fight but Leonard was just too much for him in the end.
Hearns looked and was emaciated. Too low a weight class for him.
He still gave Ray hell
The greatest fight I the sheer speed, the skill,, the power.
If ypu are not called Robinson at Welter ypu are not going to beat either man.
Such a shame that the detached retina stopped the Hagler fight of the century happeining around 82/83. Appreciate it happened in 87 but it would have been miles bigger 4 or 5 years earlier. Mind you Hagler v Hearns in 85 was unreal.
Que buen recuerdo!! En estos tiempos ya no hay peleas entre boxeadores de ese nivel, de los mejores de la historia!!!
Ray Leonard before the retina tear is the greatest fighter in history. He was the most skilled and has no flaws. After the retina he took a four year layoff and he was never the same again.
There is no fighter without flaws
The greatest era in boxing history
Full fucking stop.
Leonard The King !!!!
Can’t believe my uncles from Detroit encouraged me to take Hearns only to be defeated by Ray
Ray Leonard vs Tommy Hearns in there prime. Ali vs fraiser . Once in a lifetime.
What a legendary fight.
This is a fight… Ray came in with that Ali hop and swag but then Hearns shut that down quick standing toe to toe and Ray said I can fight that way too.
Leonard had the heart ofa dam Mongoose lol . Great fighting on both their behalfs.. I still remember we were youngster and this was a highly anticipated fight on the fairly new Cable tv (ON and Select Tv)
It is now the end of 2023.
Did u notice how energized these fighters were in all the early rounds?
Diet. The food was much more honest back in those days.
Now most of your options are highly processed, schemed up so called food designed to make the sellers rich.. who cares what it does to u.
Now the people r becoming the blown up chickens.. at first it was jus the chickens, that was the start of it
Those body shots by Leonard were crippling!!!
People question Tommy`s chin; but in this fight he took Ray`s best shots and finished on his feet. The only other
fighters to do that were Duran and Hagler. There was nothing suspect about Hearn`s chin; the only time he went
down was from punches that would have dropped ANY fighter.
Sugar Ray was better than Hearns, Sugar Ray was better than Hagler , Sugar Ray was better than Duran ( no mas - LOL)
Terry Norris and Hector Camacho destroyed him 😂
After he was 20 years fighting...those fighters had no chance vs leonard in his prime
Sugar Ray was NOT! better than hagler, I loved sugar Ray up to the moment he fought hagler, he ran that whole fight, he would do little pitter patter punches in the clinch and then run, I lost respect for him and the boxing world, how in the hell you take away a champion's belt running and not knocking him out, it was totally bias, and year's later sugar Ray's wife, divorced him and did a tell book about her marriage to him, she stated he was verbally and physically abusive to her and he also did cocaine on a regular basis, when they asked him about the book and the things she said, he just said that she was a great mother as well as a wife, and he didn't refute the aligations.
@@gregoryingram7561he beat Hagler and made it look easy
Hearns was pure beauty with his crisp and solid combinations. But he had zero defence and strategy was to smash them out before he got nailed
He had defense in rounds 9 through 12.
Hell of a fight!
that ref was awful at being there to separate the fighters after each bell
Great Editing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Those body shots😢the blood he peed
This was the golden era of boxing. The number of rounds is astonishing. This is why Leonard was such a great champion.
Had Tommy not tired like he did, this fight was his !! Srl went 5-2-1 after this bout lol...I was 9th grade time of this fight...so ray managed 8 more fights !! Duran went 31-14 post no mas with two belts 😉
That was Tommy’s problem, endurance. His training camp was half as long as most boxers. I think this hurt him during his career. I think if he had better endurance he may have beaten Leonard AND Hagler.
Ask Spence, Danny Garcia, Thurman n Crawford how long They would last when fighting boxers of Leonard's, Hearn's, Hagler's or Duran's calibres. The four kings would embarrass GGG n Canello. Later, They ruled middle weight for a period of time. Leonard n Hearns even conquered Light Heavy divs.
They always say that about the past. I agree they beat Spence, Garcia, porter etc, although I think Crawford stays competitive, idk if he'd have a chance of winning though. However I think both ggg and canelo both contend with them.
I would like to see a prime-welter DLH, Tito and Mayorga against some of today's welters. I'd especially be interested in a Mayorga/Spence fight. I think the Matador would surprise a lot of people.
@@ConcernedResident_GiantStack Spence would get Mayorga outta there badly.
La increíble morfología de Tommy hearns, largos brazos y piernas, aunado a su gran pegada y rapidez, lo hacía invencible en ese peso!
not sure how this came into my feed but Leonard consistently hammered Hearns. brutul stuff
Man!!! These was some seriously good boxers! I couldn’t imagine going 14 rounds with Sugar
If you not in shape and prepared to get hit you not making it to fourteen rounds
Para mi el mejor boxeador de todo los tiempos lo derroto en las dos peleas al boxeador de muy buena pegada grande leonar
Hearns was lucky Cuevas or Duran didnt hit him or else he still be sleeping! he could punch, but his chin lol
Hearns fought Duran and hearns hit him so hard he fell forward on the canvas.
Everyone would be sleeping. Duran and cuevas could absolutely punch....but it went how it should - and hearns hit much harder than both. Unless hearns is making mistakes, fighting an iron chin aggresive and QUICK demon - he was going to be the winner. Only by war hearns was beatable - and even than - the claims of his soft chin are overated. 3 men kod him: leonard at 147 (tommy remained on his feet), hagler at 160 (after hearns took some bombs in the 1st two rounds), and barkley - all these were able to punch pretty good. Its not like he was kod by a paulie malignaggi jab....
these were some of the best fighters during this time.period.
Did you notice Leonard starting as going in and out then switching to a swarmer style?
I’ve always thought Hagler won that fight. No disrespect to Leonard.
This is Leonard "Hearns" 1
Hearns obviously won Leonard Hearns 2 though but the refs said draw.
Hagler is't here
Ésas eran peleas... ahora tenemos al Canelo...
Both would of beaten Mayweather imo.
Ha? Are you sure? I don't think so. Mayweather is surely fast, but only fast. He's not interesting and not brave.
Leonard did beat Mayweather sr,10 rounds he got a TKO Mayweather jr is a pussy he would not have lasted in the 80's
Hell no... Lmfaoo.... Do you see how much punishment they take??? Mayweathers defense is levels above these two.. He would definitely school Leonard who was a punching bag
@@skyblue5914 mayweather hits like a girl Leonard would have knocked him out mayweather looks good because he dose not box anyone in their prime he is a pussy FYI sugar ray beat mayweather sr.
@@skyblue5914 who did that pussy fight last a non boxer let him fight Canelo in his prime oh wait he never dose that ALL of the good boxers he could have fought in their prime he ran from at least his dad did not run from a fight he would not fight GGG either he is a pussy
Uno dei match piu belli di tutta la storia della boxe
Esto si era boxeo de el bueno
Literally mashiba vs miyata
2 of the very best!!
Was the fight stopped too soon?
que década de grandes boxeadores, por favor.
excelente boxeador fue Tommy herths
Mejor que Ray
What a fight!!
Sugar Ray is the greatest. Forget about it Floyd.
If Floys had boxed in that era he would have been the Adrian Broner of his generation
It has the POTENTIAL......Herring vs Shakur!!!! OR it can be Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Diego Corrales (RIP). *That's what ATLANTA is about to WITNESS Lord Willing.
I watched this LIVE in DETROIT MICHIGAN at the Kinfolks house. I get this fight mixed up with the Larry Holmes vs Jerry Cooney fight because the Kinfolk ALWAYS got together on FIGHT NIGHT.
NUNCA MÁS HABRA BOXEADORES HACI, HAGLER, HEARNS, DURAN, LEONARD, BARKLEY, PIPINO CUEVAS.
One of the best examples of 2 people that are both excellent at their trade and enjoy what they do
얘는 헤글러전후 다 까머금.
I watched him take gold in 76 Olympics. Said he will be champ
Cuales son las medidas en español que toman como característica enlos boxeadores
Leonard con las condiciones físicas que llevo consiguió su objetivo
You cannot mention: Hagler, Hearns, and Leonard with mentioning Durán
12:44 Estoy bien muchachos ahahaha
Leonard is bad!!
Are you out of your fucking mind...?
I think many people don't like Leonard. why? I would see a bad mouth about Leonard around.
Leonard is bad indeed💯💪😎
Leonard was a good bad guy!
what's that intro music? awesome haha

sintesis? un boxeador vs un adefesio, uno dio espectaculo de pugilato y se banco al bestial resistente... y el otro no entendio que en el boxeo no es suficiente aguantar golpes y ser animal.
FLOYD WOULD OF DROPPED SUGAR RAY .
I’m the one of biggest mayweather fans, he’s literally my Home Screen. But Leonard is an animal. Floyd could outbox and win a decision but no way Floyd wins by KO.
Pretty Boy would have dropped him …now Money Mayweather would of out boxed him
@@mykejae3493 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
lol i dont think he would of beat him at all! lol
@mykejae3493 Prettyboy Floyd was a 130 pounder who was WAY too small to hurt Leonard.
HEARNS LOST BUT LEFT LEONARD AS A ONE EYED JACK
