I bought one of these a 2020 ultimate Kona EV in the beautiful tealish blue colour a few months ago. I love it!
There are a few quality of life software aspects that I'd like improved but otherwise it's perfect. It could use more customization in scheduling things like charge times and climate. The charge schedule is daily so if weekend electricity is always low then you need to tell the car to charge if you only charge at a low rate on weekdays. And for climate it can be scheduled weekly with only two schedules supported (e.g. Mon-Friday departure at 6:30am and return at 4:00pm every week uses both). It's not practical for shift work with rotations so I just use the app every time for climate. You can turn climate, heated steering wheel and window defrost on remotely but can't heat the seat or preset destinations. But the speech control is great for that. And the car will never start in sport mode you have to press the button each time. First world problems. But most of that should be easy to change if they wanted to.
They should add some kind of heating mechanism to the charge door as it can get covered in ice. And it can only charge at 30 amps on AC while some other cars can do 40 but it's still good. It can charge 10% in something like an hour and 10 minutes. But with a standard 120v adaptor that takes around 6 hours and 20 minutes.
The different drive modes don't affect efficiency, they are training wheels that limit performance. You can get the same economy on sport as eco if you adjust your driving.
I prefer the more responsive steering of sport mode. As normal is slightly smoother than I like. But the acceleration is also smoother without significantly changing how quick it feels. This means that it is much less jerky at lower speeds and turning corners where you often switch from regeneration and acceleration.
And the battery will probably outlast the car if anyone worries about that, just don't charge it past 80% unless absolutely necessary and keep DC charging to a minimum as well.

My uncle’s eGolf has a similar feature with the slapshift down on the shifter. In the eGolf, though, your regen braking settings aren’t saved between key cycles, so you have to reset it every single time you start it. It’d be nice to set it and forget it. Maybe link it to key fob settings...🤔 On the Kona, though, I like that they’re offering a colorful interior color combo like that. Wish more companies would do the same.

Actually, since the Kona has a petrol variant too, I can only assume that they just replaced the engine with an electric motor instead, hence the lack of a frunk. The chassis would be pretty much identical to the regular Kona to save costs. A lot of other budget EVs I've seen in China do this too, no frunk, smaller boot for a battery and an electric motor where the noisy 4 banger goes.

You actually lose less range when you have less range left in the car, if that makes sense. On a full charge, it'll look like you're losing 50 miles of range for turning on the heater, but that's actually if you drive for 200 more miles, then you'll lose 50 miles of range. For example, if you have 50 miles of range left and you turn on the heater, you're not going to lose 50 miles and be unable to drive, it'll drop to like 35 miles left or something.

EV's aren't that bad after I drove a few (even light commercial trucks). The only thing that worries me is the lithium extraction situation, I'm afraid it's going to be worse than gas afterall. We do Hydrogen hybrid at work for now, then full hydrogen offer, depending on the process type it's not any that greener to be honest. So I'm biased, I feel like we've spend more than 100 years to perfect the combustion then all the sudden we should stop it for something else that .. I'm not sure is better in the end. Though times, but so interesting !

@@TedwardDrives I guess you are right. Things are changing a bit here in EU because we can feel a push towards hydrogen recently. If we make hydrogen from water instead of methane it could be a good alternative in the future, but I feel like people need to be more aware that ev's, while they are not making emissions while driving, the batteries are a big red flag factor to me. My little gesture for the planet, my old e28 drives 100% e85, and next year will have a euro 4 or 5 cat retrofitted, I'm not gonna win the Nobel prize but hey, still better than nothing 😁

A series of fires prompted mass recalls of Hyundai's best-selling Kona EV in South Korea in October. In South Korea, Hyundai has recalled 25,564 Kona EVs built during September 2017 to March 2020 due to the risk of short circuit possibly caused by faulty manufacturing of its high-voltage battery cells.

I think we've got a problem already with the average person owning quick cars, but if it's the norm that EV cars are this quick then we're going to have a problem. People already drive aggressively as it is here, don't need them going 0-60 in 6 seconds 😂

I disagree about the paddles. I think Hyundai wasted money on these. Could have been a simple button instead because you are going to set the regen once and forget about it. If you keep changing the Regen mode while driving you will be like someone who is learning to drive stick. I actually didn't know these paddles existed until I wanted to change the regen mode, the paddles are hidden behind the steering wheel. H has cut some corners with these EV Kona, which is going to surprise a few. There is no longer a small red dash light when the alarm is set. Also, you have no spare jack or wheel lug wrench on this car (neither spare wheel but that's because there's no space to fit one, btw that foam spray will ruin the pressure sensor inside the tire). So why cutting corners and adding these paddles ? Not sure. It would have made more sense to use paddles to switch from Econo, Normal and Sport modes which are actually on a small button on the center console hard to reach while driving. As for the regen modes, in Mode 1 the car is nice to drive with very subtle self braking, Mode 2 is just hiccup and hard to get used to it, Mode 3 (the strongest and the really 'self braking' one) is actually better once you get used to it. One thing to know for those DIYs, there is basically no standard jacking points on these EV. There is a small reinforcement on the sides of the car but don't try it: it is so weak it bent on mine (weaker than on other H cars, the double metal plate is just thinner for some mysterious reason, especially given the extra battery weight). So if you try to put a floor jack and lift the car on that tiny reinforcement, you will soon realize there is no point where you could place a jack stand to safely work on the car to maybe change your brakes. That's because H is lifting this car on 4 special pins on their lifts.
Yes, it chirps the tires from a stand point, but only in Sport mode. In Normal mode it drives like any $20K gasoline car. As for the 'instant EV torque' again, that's mostly in Sport mode and it's actually not that instant, it takes 1-2 seconds to build up.
The heads-up display in this car is not that helpful, and it turns off every time you park the car - not sure how long those small motors will last
One thing about the range on any EV car. The range is indeed dependent on the temp, but the biggest range factor is the SPEED. So it's somehow delusional to talk about a specific range on an EV car: if you drive the car at 30mph all day long, you will have double the range than someone driving it at 70mph, and triple the range than someone driving it at 90mph. Displayed range is always a gross approximation.

I drive this car daily. Calling the regeneration paddles, "gear paddles" or even insinuating it has anything remotely to do with "gears" is plain nonsense. They set the regen levels and, if you time it right, you can kinda use them as brakes, but they definitely don't brake as much! Also it's not "one pedal driving" by any stretch: you will need to use the "gas" pedal as with any automatic. Even if you have the level 2 autopilot on: after coming to a full stop in traffic it won't continue on its own.. Also letting go of the accelerator in a corner is not the same as braking: the Kona will slow down on the electric motor. Trust me it's way safer than braking in a corner with a regular car.
Other than that I can say that the factory tires are junk and its weight definitely feels like you're hauling around an elephant. A fast elephant nonetheless.. but this is no track car to throw around a corner.
