  • Hike Description:
Two gushing waterfalls, a series of perilous cables, and (about) half of a massive granite dome: welcome to the most iconic hike in Yosemite Valley.
Tourists, campers, hikers, climbers, nature lovers, the young and old, the first-timers, the experienced, at some point they all converge. Where? In California's Yosemite National Park that question is superfluous, for there are plenty of winding paths, Ansel Adams-pictured scenes, water features, historic sites, and high summits to choose from. But mention "Half Dome" and a thought may arise in the most uninitiated of minds because, well, everyone comes here. Some come to enjoy the camping in Little Yosemite Valley; a great number to marvel at Vernal and Nevada Falls; others to hike the 7- to 8-mile (one way) trip and grab as securely as they can onto those perilous cables. A fear-immune brave souls climb straight up to the top.
Whatever can be done to intertwine with this majestic granite formation, one must commit to it. Hike this at least once, because while up there the High Sierra can expand the sight in all directions-it is well worth the effort, even if the hike is as long and difficult as everyone has warned. Yes, the cables get notoriously steep immediately after the initial steps. And, yes, going back down will be a stress-inducing experience as well. But the most difficult part of all? Getting a permit to climb (those cables) onto Half Dome in the first place.
    Self Commentary:
For various reasons it took me a few times to get this video, but the cables were fun every time. Be careful and take time as needed while climbing but do let faster hikers pass, whether going up or down. The waterfalls on this hike are destinations of their own; there will be a lot of people on the Mist Trail up to the top of Nevada Fall, but after that the crowds generally thin out. Going up, the last toilets on the trails are at the top of Nevada Fall; however, farther ahead more can be found via the off-trail campground detour in Little Yosemite Valley. There are many spots to explore on this hike and along the Merced River that I am not showing in the video. The river/waterfalls typically achieve peak flow during spring and early summer (depending on the previous winter season), and become less voluminous later in the year-you may spot the difference with Vernal Fall between my photos, which were taken in June, and video recorded in October.
This hike was on my list for a long time and I was ecstatic to finally complete it. The first time setting foot on Half Dome I definitely felt the effects of the High Sierra: lighter, accomplished, and more reflective of myself and my happenings. It might be something else for you; during one of the times I was up there I overheard someone proclaimed she felt "lucky." That is a great word.
There will be many people climbing the cables, but it is possible to beat the crowds by breaking the hike into a 2-day backpacking trip and camping overnight at the Little Yosemite Valley Campground (wilderness permit required). This method will not necessarily make things easier since heavy camping gear is carried the whole time (unless, of course, you are an ultralighter).

Oh, my God! I can't believe someone took a baby up Half Dome! I thought I was seeing things until I read someone else's comment who mentioned it. That's totally insane. Get a baby sitter, for crying out loud. Jeez. It's enough to risk one's own life on scary hikes like this, but to risk the life of a baby, well, I just don't think that's right. Or, if it IS right, it's certainly right up there with crazy.

Thanks for this terrific video. I am looking forward to viewing part 2 and others of your videos. I love these full hikes that are actually full hikes. As I'm unable at my age to go on these types of hikes, I enjoy watching others who ARE able to go on these types of hikes and record them. I'm grateful to you and others for this. I was only going to watch it in half-hour increments, but after the third half hour, I was addicted and had to watch it to the end in one last sitting.

This has got to be the rockiest, bouldery-est place I've ever seen. It's like it rained boulders and big rocks for hours! After awhile, I made it a game to try and figure out where the path was leading before you got there. There were so many rocky areas that looked like they could have been paths, but found out that they weren't. I often had a hard time seeing the path until you were on it.

This wasn't quite as scary as the Angel's Landing hike, but it was right up there. If Angel's Landing was a 10, Half Dome would be a 9.5 in my book. That last half hour or so, you'd have to be half mountain goat to climb up those "stairs". Having a case of acrophobia, I would have had a hard time far below these last "stairs", walking on narrow paths and "stairs" with steep drop-offs to the side. Kudos to you and all the others were able to make this hike all the way to the top.

Thanks again for thinking of others while you're out there enjoying your hiking experiences, enough to both record and post your hikes.

@Katj Hill That hiker had confidence and protective equipment. Both parent/child made it up and down fine. Park officials also let them. I've seen other instances of people hiking with babies. I usually refrain from passing judgment on people, mainly because I always have too much of my own business to worry about, and also because I have no knowledge on the individual's background, capability, and mentality. However, in this case I was actually there and spoke to that hiker briefly.

If I ever reach 100, I should consider myself lucky, if I can reach back before my 10th, in my memory banks.

      1. Increasing arm strength - for example, do pull-ups while wearing a backpack that's heavier than the one you're planning to bring.
      2. Reducing water weight - invest in a portable water filtering device and study exactly where you can get water. On this hike, the last spot for water (a river close to the trail, on the right) is around 1:29:00 in the video.
The cables will be the main focus/challenge for this hike.

I loved hiking. 73 now with bad arthritis in both feet so this kind of hiking is out for me. I’m also an insomniac so I absolutely love your videos. Thank you so much for sharing. ‘hiking’ like this is better than nothing. Enjoying it immensely.
However, watching this I can’t imagine any amount of training makes it unnecessary to hydrate your body. Do you get leg cramps often after a strenuous hike like this?

    • @TheOutboundMind
      @TheOutboundMind  3 года назад +1

Excellent that you find value in the videos. No leg cramps here, because I do stretches every day (whether I'm hiking or not) and other appropriate actions that keep me ready for these hikes. I rarely drink/eat now, but it's been a process. Basically, I started measuring my performance and gradually upping the hiking difficulty while reducing the amount of breaks/water/food. Thank you for the question.

The trail doesn't seem clear at all especially after little Yosemite Valley. Is this just because I'm viewing it from the camera's perspective or is the trail really this difficult to see?

@@TheOutboundMind Probably the Ranger crew doing Permit Checking might discourage that "malarkey" at Subdomes' base; it's sort of like the fools who used to scalp tickets right at the venues that Led Zeppelin was playing at. I used a GoPro HERO5 Black attached to a chest strap, and connected to an external battery pack-that took care of the power concern. At the time, I used a 128GB memory card which gave approximately 5+ hours of 2K@50 fps video; it was not enough for the whole hike, so I also carried a laptop to transfer files out of the GoPro onto the laptop during my break on top of Half Dome.
I now use a 256GB card, which gives 8+ hours of 2K@50 fps footage; enough for all of my hikes.

If the Permit Checking Ranger had DETERMINATION, as well as smarts, he would have turned the hussy straight around, right back down to The Valley; heck, he has the FULL Imperative and Backing of this Government that he works for, nothing to worry about on that account, even if the hussy turns "Karen" on him, and the other hikers. And a better place than on The Cables, preferably at the base of Subdome, is a far safer place for her to go "Karen" on everyone else. Did you notice that she was also fartin' around with a Via Ferrata rig?! That complicates things extra-dangerous for this poor, VERY captive infant. Even those without babies actually do better on The Cables, without that fol-de-rol. We will reach the summit all that much faster, while the VF crowd is busy, and DISTRACTED, clipping and unclipping, as safely, if not more, as there is far much less to distract us. Just stay BETWEEN The Cables and rest on the 2X4's as needed, and you already have eliminated at least Sixty Percent of the dangers, and you eliminate even more, by exercising considerate and caring trail etiquette, something this hussy also failed to do, by refusing others to pass her.
And NPS Trails Division will probably decide to do the same with the Nevada Falls Steps, too, so that it's "just fine 'n' dandy", if they want to pass those expenses on, in the form of say, all of us paying at least $100.00 per legitimate entry, for the Half Dome Permit(s) Lottery.

Can you actually believe that all of this trail, save for The Cables proper, was built by FDR's CCC lads, as much as 90 years ago? Their engineering smarts, and proper strategic placing of the segments has endured that LONG, and shall continue for at least 200 years more, all NPS crews have to do, is spread a few more patches of asphalt before Low Bridge, if they're "bored".
But now, and this was after "Outbound Mind" shot this footage, the entire Mist Trail Staircase, is enclosed in steel piping bannisters, and chains/cable-lengths on the upside rocks. They now figure they have to make contingencies for the stupidest of visitors, and they want to save The Office of The Attorney General, a few headaches, from its staff. Sigh, oh well.

I agree the video is very long and burned up a lot of my limited data plan but I did watch the whole thing and greatly appreciated being able to see every detail of the entire hike. I did that hike back in 2008 and have been wanting to do it one more time. But honestly, it's a brutal uphill grind. The rise on some of those steps is very high and putting all that weight on one leg at a time, whether going up or down, and doing it over and over again is brutal. After watching this I know I'll need to do significant preconditioning before attempting it again. But seeing the whole hike is the next best thing to being there.
