Today is 6-28-23 and I was just there on 6-25-23 and 6-26-23 and I wish I would have seen this video before arriving! She is not exaggerating people this place is packed! We stayed in Fish Camp California and the drive to the park is one hour. The first day we arrived by 7:00am and there was a huge line that took another hour to pay to get into the park. We drove down to the Valley and the rangers closed that entrance and made us park along the side of the road. It was a 3 mile hike just to get to lower Yosemite falls from our car. Yes there bus system is running but the wait is at least 45 min and if no one get off you can’t get on.! Despite the traffic and the huge crowds we had a great time!

Not a rant, this is balanced and it's good to have the heads up. I've heard that it was crowded and the traffic bad, but had no idea how bad. Good to know...but also very sad. Very much hope a reservation system returns and that the shuttle buses could be adequately maintained, repaired and staffed so that those would be an option.

I visited Yosemite on July 23-24. We arrived at 3:30pm, and there were no lines to enter. Went to see the sequoias, no lines for the shuttle. At 6 pm we parked at Tunnel View. Ate dinner and stayed at Yosemite Valley Lodge, and it was wonderful! The next day we rented a bike, and explored the valley. Arrive late, stay in the park, and rent a bike.

I drove up in early May. Wanted to see the water and lucked out that a campsite was available-it was snowing so I’m sure someone had cancelled.
Got to the entrance gate just before 7 PM, only two cars ahead of me. Drove in, caught some amazing light on half dome as the snowstorm was clearing out. Camped in the back of the Jeep, which was suboptimal. Drove over to Curry right at 7 am for coffee, took in all the sights, and was back at the entrance by 9:30. By that time the backup at the gate was at least a mile.

My boyfriend and I went during Memorial Day weekend (May 27) we didn’t know that one of the entrances was closed which added 2 hours to get to the open entrance. When we got about 4 miles to the entrance there was a line that we waited in for about 4 1/2 hours. We finally got inside the park at 3 pm, and then drove around looking for parking for who knows how long. A total disaster.

@@HarperTS I first visited Yosemite in 1956, when I was 16 and with my 15 year old brother, rode my Harley from the east side over Tioga Pass. Traffic was light with no issues.
Over the ensuing years, I have done a lot of hiking in Yosemite, and have climbed Half Dome a total of six times. Once, after a 200 mile drive to get there, the line to get permits was long, so we just went on what turned out to be a 14 mile hike up Tenaya Canyon and on to Tenaya Lake. Late spring snows had delayed the opening of Tioga Pass and we had to look a bit for a dry spot to place our sleeping bags, but we were the only ones there. We hiked a total of three days and it wasn't until the third day before we saw another soul. Now, I read David Paulides "Missing 419", with the largest cluster of missing people being in Yosemite, with no trace of them ever being found, and kind of gives me the chills. WHAT actually happens to all of these people?
My wife and I are planning a trip from coastal CA about 100 miles north of San Francisco to pay a visit to the UFO museum in Roswell, NM, and even though I have a Golden Age Passport, wouldn't cost us a dime to get in and pass through the park, we'll drive around it simply to avoid the choking crowd hassle...although we might return from the east side. I was there in Yosemite on July 1, 2023 (July 4th weekend). I had only 1 day for Yosemite because I was about to end my 30 day trip in US.
I parked my car just outside the South Entrance at a random resting spot on the road at midnight a night before. Slept for a few hours in the car. Woke up at 5am. Started driving by 5:30am & reached the Curry village parking around 6:30am. It was practically full & I managed to get one of the few final spots left.
I had Half Dome hike planned for the day. So after having breakfast & packing my food/water/bag for the day, I left for the hike, only to realize that the parking was a mile away from the trail head & I would either need to walk or take a bus. I decided to wait for the bus & was 3rd in line. The bus took 30 mins to reach our station & it was full (at 7:45am). 3 people got out & the driver allowed only 3 people to get in. I got in.
I did the Half Dome hike that day. Walked 19 miles over 12 hours, crossed 2 beautiful waterfalls (Vernon & Nevada falls). Had a really beautiful outdoor day.
But for all of that to happen, YOU GOTTA WAKE UP EARLY & FIND A PARKING.

I just spent five weeks volunteering in the valley. The crowds and traffic were horrible, worse than I've ever seen in 40 years of going to Yosemite. Very stressful. The boss said that the day use reservation system can't be made permanent without being passed by Congress after a public comment period, which could be two years. In the meantime, people are destroying the park by parking in the bushes along the side of the roads. Contact your Congressmen and maybe we can get something done sooner. The previous day use reservation system was allowed as a covid emergency rule.

We once had reservations in the middle of January for a Yosemite Lodge room and called reservations the day before and got an upgrade to the Awhanee for just a few more bucks! The room had a view of half dome covered in snow. For breakfast we ate in the big lodge restaurant in the nook at the far end all by ourselves beside a window with the snow falling. I was just there on Wednesday the 28th of June. Spent the previous evening at Ninis cottage in Fish Camp (Great Airbnb at the light gauge railroad with everything you would need) and left at 8:30 am the morning of Wednesday to drive into the park. Aside from a 20 minute wait to pay to enter the rest of it was a relative breeze. Traffic moved as it should. Quickly found parking at tunnel view without any wait, Bridal veil falls roadside parking was not an issue, then onto Sierra Village to begin the loop trail around Mirror Lake. Once at the village it was quite a bit more congested but I turned on my parking Karma and bada-bing a spot opened up and off we went. The water level in the lake was high due to the copious amount of water flowing down, and the hike around the loop was very uncongested and quiet due to a slide on the south side which kept many people away due to the flooding and ducking and hopping over and scrambling under downed trees required. Once back to the store and after a premade sandwich and delicious cherries and several cold beers we then drove to yosemite falls around 4 pm and parked in the basecamp lot, and again, easy breezy. However, people are coming and going continually so even though there were lots of people we found parking pretty easily at each spot we drove to.

Thank you for this heads up. It's hard enough to park on a normal summer day. Maybe it is time to ride Amtrak and Yarts. Not too easy to do. We've been bringing bikes for at least 20 years and we go to the park at the end of September, first week in October. I would skip it this year. I am a member of the Yosemite Conservancy and I would suggest that you donate since the funding is
iffy these days. Please watch out for bears. So many are killed by cars and there are cubs with every mama bear. Try Lassen or Pinnacles this year. Yosemite is our favorite National Park and

I usually end up doing Greyhound to Merced and then YARTS the next day 🙂YARTS should probably do two buses each run in summer.
Bringing back the reservation system would probably help.
Once the electric VTOL air taxis become a mature business, we'll probably be able to get on an eVTOL from San Jose and get to Merced in five minutes. The CEO of Joby Aviation did say he's very confident that he can start service in Los Angeles in 2024. I hope to see it! Battery powered, goes 155 miles at 200 mph. Holds 4 passengers and 1 pilot. 🙂

"Is February a good time to visit?"
February is a good time imho because still too cold for mosquitos....also you have the "firefall" ....
It sounds like they are going to want people to make reservations to get to the area to see that. Google "Viewing Horsetail Fall in Late February" that phrase should get you to an NPS site where you can make the reservations (you can still get into the park regardless of that...but to view "firefall" you need a reservation)
Firefall is when Horsetail Fall catches the setting sun just right, and it looks like lava!!
"Due to the popularity of the event, various restrictions are in effect during mid- to late February each year daily. The dates for 2023 are February 10 through 27. In 2023, a reservation will be required to drive into Yosemite 24 hours per day on February 10-12, 17-19, and 24-26. Additionally, parking will be restricted in some areas."

Can't people see how destructive and countrary this is to the already fragile ecosystem of Yosemite? Too many people are the problem. Limiting access is the only solution and has been for way too long.
