In response to the question "If you don't race, how do you plan your training?" At age 63 I stopped thinking about racing. As a mountain biker I had my share of broken bones and concussions and I'm done with that part of cycling. I have to agree with Si. A person still needs a cycling goal. My new goal is to ride 80 miles on my 80th birthday. To that goal, I ride 200 miles a week. Faster when I feel like it. Not so fast when I don't. Maybe if I reach that goal I'll shoot for 100 km on my 100th birthday.

I always ride alone, no races, no organised events. (Live in Lao PDR, South East Asia) The motivation for me is just the fun of being outside on a great bike and pushing myself. Strava does help though and then I am always looking at maps to find a new more interesting route. Cycling is awesome! dont need to have a racing or fitness goal to go out, go fast and go big, week after week!

I don't race or participate in any events. Instead I plan a trip of 2-3 weeks every summer and train towards that. Therefore I start doing longer training sessions a month or two before my trip. I can recommend this to anybody who loves riding and travelling, you get to go places and really challenge yourself. Hope this helps. Cheers

Dates (the fruit...). That is, for me, the ultimate bike fuel. I don't know why, but i just seem to manage better when I've stuffed a few dates into my mouth before a tough ride.
Also, I really do think Clif bars are an excellent companion for bike rides.

Tim Hortons coffee and apple fritters, McDonald's Big Mac and Coke, ballpark hot dogs. That's how I fuel my riding. I followed GCN training workout for last 2 months consistently with intention to join endurance race 80km above. Oh I'm 50year this year & started cycling April 2018. I used both MTB & RB. Last event attempted was 160KM but managed only 40km. Question:
    1. What is the best option training workout program to follow & gradually increase the program?
    2. How to rapidly increase endurance stamina at current age?
    3. Is it enough to follow GCN intense training workout via youtube or to also include proper on road distance riding as well?
    4. Which is better to use for on-road training - MTB or RB?

Training Peaks. Don't let the Form score get below -20 without resting for a day or two. Use it to taper down ride intensity before big events that may be hard for you (let Form get to +5 or so).. You need a power meter for this.

I have a question for Ask GCN Anything: If pro teams frequently purchase their own bike parts, and there is no performance difference between Ultegra and DuraAce other than weight, and most racers need to add weight to their bikes, why would teams choose to pay so much more for parts that have no performance benefit, especially when they are going to negate the only real benefit of DuraAce by adding weight to the bike?

Hi GCN SI DAN EMMA the best cycling on the planet 4 me. How can I stop steam on my cycling glasses as u all know, in UK we haven't got the best 🌞 although last week was wooooooooow please give me an answer on this as it is getting on my nerve.

If the glasses are really clean then there are less imperfections for water to condense on, so that helps. Expensive glasses also have hydrophobic coatings that stop water condensing. I have used nickwax hydrophobic treatments that are made for clothes of cheep glasses, it worked but didn't last.

Good morning guys, thank you for this video, it's taken me a few weeks to come back to you with this (very long) question!
I am three weeks into the six week FTP program on Zwift and the improvements have been (are) dramatic. As you well know you enter a base FTP at the beginning for the program for the program to calculate from. Initially I struggled (being new to trainers too), but within a week it became "comfortable" (euphemism). Two questions please: a). Can I split the sessions (split days) in one day, say one in the morning one in the afternoon, for instance Foundation/ Strength, Tempo/ Foundation, or is this too much? b). My FTP is obviously improving, I am setting PB's on the climbs on Strava on my regular training rides, so should I re-do my FTP test now for the remainder of the six week program, or stick with the original FTP I set at the beginning of the six weeks. I want to get the most out of this prior to a race on 1st July 2018, but I don't want to smash myself. Very conscious of your statement(s) regarding recovery. By the way, I am a mountain bike and gravel rider, but not much serious training information over at GMBN, more farting about in the woods. Thanks for your information and videos! Ride on guys, Tim

Question; training vs sleep. I get an average og 7 hours a night (8 if I'm lucky) du to work and family. I cycle about 10 hours a week, but want more. Could I get up 2hours earlier one or two days to go cycling, or will I be better off with the extra sleep?

My guess is sleep is more beneficial, especially if you're only getting 7 now.

Do pro cyclists who crash in a race ever use the neutral bikes on the Shimano or Mavic cars. I saw a rider from team Sky go down and both neutral cars went by wile the was waiting for his team car to show up

You can't not eat protein. Theres still protein in high carb foods. Ample amount if you're eating enough calories in a day.
