Fishing for Crabs! Looping Large Crustaceans From Shore

  • Skipped the soggy opener and waited for calmer weather to dissipate the strong swells. Found a day that lined up with some prime conditions and free time and met some flips at the Half Moon Bay south jetty, and looped my first keeper dungeness crab of the recreational season PLUS a bonus brown rocky to boot! When the bite is slow, just mix up the bait and cover lots of water till you find them. The harder you work, the better they taste.
    Thanks to Ron aka Old Man and the Sea for the large vert loop snare design tip, works great!

    I found a way to make effective crab snares for 50 cents each in 5-10 minutes (the one that caught the rock crab). Let me know if you want a how-to vid.

    How does this trap function? Does the snare only tighten ones you pull in the line? Or can he get trapped whilst feeding?

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  5 лет назад

      pretty simple: there are 6 monofilament lassos attached to a bait cage. when the crab feeds, it's claws and legs get entangled in the loops. every 10-15 minutes, just pull hard on your rod. if a crab's there, the loops will close on the crab, you'll feel the weight, and just slowly crank him in. that's it! they're legal in CA (6 loop maximum), but check your local laws if snaring is legal if you're out of state.

    i live in oregon and want to start crab snaring, i plan to fish while waiting, do you know if you need to have 2 rod validation if 1 is catching crabs?

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад

      i'm not sure about the OR rod limits, just check your local regs. i know that if you have a snare out in the water, it counts as 1 rod in CA.

      Net Fish i would but they're so time consuming to make. that's why i think people would appreciate a how-to vid showing how i make a snare in 5-10 minutes.

    Happy Thanksgiving! Yeah it seems to be slow going for a lot of crab snare-ers out there these past two weeks despite the string of good conditions. They're definitely out there though; party boats pulling in limits and I've been getting plenty of large males (which is shocking) by hand out at Ocean Beach, but I imagine things will turn around here shortly. Just gotta keep putting in the time! Be safe out there and have a great holiday weekend.

      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад +1

      awesome P, i have to meet you out there for some hand crabbing one day. what are best conditions, low tide at dusk?

    • @user-kk6lc1th2r
      @user-kk6lc1th2r 6 лет назад +3

      Low swell, low wind, average-weak current/coefficient and an incoming tide from about 1-2 hours after the turn onward. For you, you want to not be fighting the water as well as want it to clear up quickly after each set i.e. low wind, weak current. For the dungies, basically anything that makes it easier for crabs to move in close to shore to feed without much effort. They're hella lazy lol I prefer mornings or early afternoon when the wind is lighter, but have definitely done it later in the afternoon/early evening. Tough to get those conditions in the Winter and Spring though with the crazy swells, but if the stars align like they have been this November, it's easy pickings out there. And you don't have to waste time with shorties; you can just spot them and move on.
      This Thanksgiving Weekend will have some of the best conditions to chase them down for the rest of the 2017. I'll be out of town but if you have the chance I'd definitely put in 90m-2 hours out there at OB. Should be killer. Lincoln-Noriega / Pacheco-Taraval are the stretches where I've been finding them. Depending on the part of the tide you tackle, I'd wade out knee-to-inner thigh depth, put on some shades to see clearly through the water, and bring a potato sack or dive bag that you can just carry and dump them in, and then haul them back to shore to be measured. It'll save you lots of time.

      @P Pretty sure you and I met at Baker beach last week and we had this same conversation. We chatted near Jun's pop up tents probably for the better part of like 30-45 mins. Appreciate the invite to go hand crabbing that day. I'll have to take you up on that sometime. It's nice to put a face to a name that I've had a few conversations with over YT.

    Have you ever tried the crabhawk trap? I was out crabbing one time and I saw this guy use it and he caught plenty of crabs from the dock. I wonder how it compare to the snarl trap.

    • @marine6

      did you get one?
      are they legal here in the bay area?

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад +1

      i did! and turns out, they're illegal in california (according to pier regulars). i looked on the cdfw website, and i think they fall under 'entrapment devices' in that the net part can entangle the crabs and won't auto release them like a proper crab snare loop would. i tried it anyways, hope to post a review soon.

    • @marine6
      @marine6 6 лет назад +1

      damn it, i just ordered one...
      oh well, ill just use it when i go fishing in Japan.
      ( it would be nice if the dfg would ever answer their phones or return voicemails or e-mails to confirm this )

    • @walden6272
      @walden6272 6 лет назад

      Really? It's illegal in Cali? Strange since it's perfectly legal in Washington and we have one of the strictest regulations on crabbing. This trap is small and it self-opens if it is lost so it doesn't pose a threat to the crab. Anyways, looking forward to your review.

    Good one! Ish if you retrieve the line with rod it would be good for your reel for long run, just retrieving with reel will shorten your reel gear's life for sure. So pull and reel pull and reel *Happy Fishing*
