People are hitching rides because they sometimes deserve to be on the side of the road begging for a ride. They obviously did something wrong to end up on the side of the road.. begging.
The golden rule is: everybody wants something. Ive had people pick me up that have been completely suicidal. You know how much it sucks when all you want is a ride and the driver "trauma dumps" all their problems on you? Women trying to come on to you in front of their kids, gay dudes, intoxicated drivers, the recently divorced....Ive literally had vehicles pull over to give me a ride and by the time I walked up to them I was telling them I wasnt interested and to just keep going. It doesnt go both ways, it goes every way you can think of and some you cant.
With all due respect, you sound a little ungrateful. "Trauma dumps." The person is giving you a ride - the least you can do is listen and be compassionate. Maybe you can save a life. With all due respect, its not all about what you can extract from a situation.

North Carolina had rape test kits sitting on the shelves for years that couldn't get processed all because the state legislature wouldn't provide the funding. Some folks don't have their priorities right.
Although a rough choice, I pick up hitch hikers if I feel I can control the situation. I’ve also hitched hiked from Ny to Cali 2 times in the 80’s. I was 17 the first time. Fresh out of school. I didn’t hurt anyone.
If I had a dollar for every hitchhiker I picked up and for every time I put my thumb up or asked the Girl I was with to put hers up I would have about $500. A person has to be careful and STOP a problem just soon as it starts. A word of advice , if you have to get a ride in a hurry and you have a Female with you just hide on the side of the road with her standing alone. Not even 3 cars will pass before you both get a ride but guy's move fast and when you jump out always wear a smile that says Thank You. Happy trails
@@miked3841I don't think the police told the whole story. The man picked up a hitchhiker and freely took him home with him or was forced to take the hitchhiker home with him and he was killed for doing a good deed. In this day and age, never pick up anybody.

1988...Uber didn't exist...Lyft didn't exist...cell phones didn't exist...cabs weren't everywhere back then, and they were a LOT more expensive than Uber and Lyft are now. Hitching was a lot more common back then. I hitched a few times, and I picked people up on the way to/from work, I once picked up a woman with a baby and groceries. Things were not as easy back then, and not everyone had cars. In rural areas with no public transport, people walked miles to the grocery store and to and from work. The 'kindness of strangers' was a real thing then.
I hitched all over this country in the 70's. Had alot of cool experiences that I never would have in this town. I say be careful what you assume a hiked wants to do.

I've picked up dozens of hitchhikers. This guy got killed in his house, not in his car after picking up a hitchhiker.

What does this have to do with hitchhikers? This guy's DNA was found in the dead man's house, he wasn't a hitchhiker.
The DNA was found in two cigarettes found in two different locations. One was in the house and the other was in the car.
