They are very cheap but the convenience of changing colors so quickly without having to clean the brush means you can complete your kit more quickly and easily. And there all lots of colors in other marker lines that may fit this.
Wow, what a great product! The whole mixing paint and cleanup has always put me off doing airbrushing, this really makes the process so much simpler! I'd certainly like to give this a shot!
I literally use a box from my last HLJ shipment as a "Paint Box", works quite alright with this. I plan to do a full custom using the marker system, I dont have the luxury of mounting an exhaust somewhere so this is a good solution for me! Don't forget: You can get other tips for the Gundam markers and it does make a difference! FYI for Europeans: The Montana 0.7 mm markers also fit in this. Might be a bit easier to get your hands on. Quite a variation of colors and they also have similar replacement tips (tips are not interexchangable between the Montana and Gundam markers, the length is different).
I've been using this Thing since release and I really like it. However, it can be difficult to match colour saturation between peaces. I recommend using it for thrusters and vents. The gold marker of the advanced Set is awesome for that. Makes a nice, even coat. Even on larger surfaces.
Thank you for this video. I bought gundam marker 4 times because of the nozzle goes bad on the spray can after using for a while. every single of them. This was a great video.
from the testing you did i noticed it has some splashes of color that looked like they were quite noticeable, and without a compressor the canned air is going to be quite expensive in the long run. so I guess at that point buying a normal airbrush would be better as you can also get more colors and a cleaner result
TRIA Markers did this over 25 years ago, you could even buy ink refills for the markers but even then it was way too expensive to use markers rather than a basic airbrush with a baby compressor and that was when I was just using them for 2D renderings for my degree in Product Design, before AutoCAD and Illustrator became the main tool for designers.
Fortunately, this system ends up coming out much cheaper than a traditional airbrush, assuming you use compressed air rather than a proper compressor! The handpiece itself is around $25 USD, and the markers are only a couple USD each. 👍
Is it safe to use tamiya surface primer before airbrushing these markers? Or should we go with other primers such as Mr. Hobby aqueous surface primer instead?
personally i love using airbrushing markers as it is much less toxic and easier to clean up, plus i can do it safely at home in a small area without health issues i can easily just marker it on the kits for thicker look or cover ups
Got one of these a while back and extremely awesome results especially with your metallic Gundam Markers... Best thing is no clean up. You can buy special Gundam Marker Tips made purely for this set up.👍
Sir. Since we use Gundam marker as the liquid, do they still smells bad? Is it recommended to paint it indoor without fume extractor? As usually I used gunpla marker indoor as well. Since it uses similar marker, there won't be any issue on lung hazard will there?
The replacement nibs don't let as much paint through to reduce drops of paint. Also, they have a pointed tip where regular gundam markers have a brush style tip. I hope this helps.👍
Looks like a great way for people (like me) to get better use out of their markers, which otherwise seem to be something of an acquired art to get decent results out of. Also good for people wary of the hassle of using airbrush systems to begin with. The compressor definitely seems to yield better coverage than the air cans (admittedly that could be the video quality/compression). Any idea what PSI it operates at, to see if we can find something similar closer to home? Also, are there any markers that could be used for top coats, in conjunction with this set? Also thinking about the layered effect paint system for Eye Pieces and sensors, in this regard.
We believe it's 15psi! As for a top coat, there isn't anything we know of that would work with this system, unfortunately. To keep it easy, a spray can top coat from your local hobby supply or hardware store would be the best way to go 👍
Thanks for that, I'll have to keep that in mind when looking. Shame about the top coat, I was hoping that there might be something where I wouldn't need to worry too much about fumes (I was looking at the paint box option too, as I don't really have the space for full ventilation).
Since you briefly mentioned Posca in the Conclusion, would it be possible to get a confirmation on if Posca works once you try it? I've painted a few kits using Posca Paint Pens by hand, it would be great if they work.
I mean at that point, wouldn't it be better to just get an actual air brush, air compressor, and use the acrylic paints? The Gundam Marker are convenient but they don't have nearly as much paint a a bottle does. I suppose the convenience of not having to mix the paint & thinner might be a point of attraction?
As this setup is cheaper, it's a little less intimidating to folks who haven't airbrushed before, to just get started. The investment needed for a typical airbrush setup can be a high bar if you've never touched one before, so we think this is a great entry-level airbrush!
Who are you trying to kid? That spoon sample looked as horrible as spray paint out of Testors and Model Masters spray cans. Looked much better with a compressor. In that case just stick to your airbrush setup.
Question: Does this mean you don't need to use primer with these markers? or is it better to prime the kit before using this setup? oh please do a video with posca too. > < that's going to be interesting! Looking forward for the end result for the oldschool gundam kit!
Depends. You do need to clean the parts to remove the oils/dirt, that's a given. Primer is handy if you do a strong color transition. Especially a dark part to a light(er) color, it is a good idea to use primer. It isn't required, but can give better results.
Do you have to use Gundam markers or can you use other brands ? I live in the UK & it makes me worry if I invest that I have to buy pens in bulk rather than go to my local hobby shops to get any marker.
Great informative video Todd (& Dave). A good way of entry into spraying on a budget. There is no A4 size of paper in US. Fans of setting up printers will know the US near equivalent is called "letter". Nice to see these variety of videos. p.s. did Dave spray his own Mr Beast sweatshirt lol?
If you’re serious about painting, just buy a cheap airbrush kit off Amazon. You can dilute cheap acrylic paints. Outcome will be 100 times better than whatever this is.
I thought this would be a tutorial and I was thrilled but no ... sadly. I wish Gunpla TV do more quick tips I know there was few on the older videos but come on . .... I want the Tod take XD
Well...this only proved that regular airbrush and paint is the way to go. The price is moot as the result is bad, spits and splatters all over. I understand that there are people on budget, but better save up for a regular cheaper airbrush if you plan on using it in a longer run
GunDAMN airbrush kit didn't work cuz the air hose it comes with was faulty :( Bought a regular airbrush kit as a result so I guess I wasted money on the gundam Marker Airbrush kit lol
Turns out I have the JPN version that came with the compressed air and the connection fitting and hose both are odd so perhaps that's why mine didn't work I dunno

It's made me loose some of my fear too! Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime, probs not in a HLJ video though haha, small steps eh! (Dave).
Same. Was worried about trying such things but this looks like a great starter set. Definitely looking into this

Yes! More videos about tools, even if it's more review style than tutorial style. But I would also like to see tutorials as well
Thank you, and thank you for time stamps - 12 minutes in and only then the stuff I came for starts...

Some questions about durability, how is it with waterslides, panel liner, top coats and general handling. Does it scratch easily on straight plastic?
Should I use primer on my kits before airbrushing this way?
With the announcement of gundam marker topcoat pens, this just got alot more value for beginners imo
Is it safe to use tamiya surface primer before airbrushing these markers? Or should we go with other primers such as Mr. Hobby aqueous surface primer instead?
interesting Marker Spray System looks fun
personally i love using airbrushing markers as it is much less toxic and easier to clean up, plus i can do it safely at home in a small area without health issues

That's quite impressive and a great entry point to airbrushing.
Definitely great for beginners!

Yea, the clean up is the main bonus, and fast set up.
@@hobbylinktv glad you made this video. I love the Japanese minimalist model set up... 👍
Been waiting for good review on this product
What do you mean? There's already a ton of reviews on this on youtube and the net since it came out.
Needs the Boss man, Todd is the final word on these products ;)
how long does a marker last vs paint does air brushing with the gundam marker make it worth it
Can this work with other hobby markers?
That introduction felt like a news program from the early 90's lol.
Haha, yea I get that vibe lol!
what psi did you use for the airbrush marker?
Did this RX ever get finished? Tried to find the successor to this video but no luck.
Sir. Since we use Gundam marker as the liquid, do they still smells bad? Is it recommended to paint it indoor without fume extractor? As usually I used gunpla marker indoor as well. Since it uses similar marker, there won't be any issue on lung hazard will there?
Hi I’m trying to find a air hose that connects to the brush, what size is it?
do i need to primer the parts to be painted by those markers? if yes, will laquer type or acrylic will work? thanks
Since you're collecting the 1/144 RX-78-2s can we get a review of the FG RX-78-2?
Do the Posca Markers work with this?
There's also a replacement tip, so what does that do?
The replacement nibs don't let as much paint through to reduce drops of paint.

I've been wondering if this was any good. Maybe I'll get one some day.
Quite fun to use!
@@hobbylinktv I second that.👍

hmmm this was recently brought up on the gunpla discord…
Whilst this does seem a cheaper option _by far_ the bottleneck always seems to be getting the compressed air... Curse my weak lungs.

A compressor isn't required. Cans of compressed air work fine. (Mr. Hobby, i don't know about other brands)
Yea, sell them all across the world, sorry but we cant sell those because we can't ship them.
another clickbait. A title should have ran how to use Gundam markers with airbrush equipment something to that effect.

Really, over a minute to advertise cardboard garbage?
I would have loved to watch but your inability to pronounce Gundam correctly has kept me from doing so.
