- Roxy Music performing "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" live on the BBC program The Old Grey Whistle Test. First broadcast on April 3, 1973.
Classic. Видеоклипы
What I learned from this: Never attempt a staring contest with Bryan Ferry.
"I've written a song about a fella who's in love with a blow up doll"
"What!? Like a joke track?"
"No. It's going to be the weightiest shizz we ever done. About the love of empty things, that can't love you back."
I am so glad they visited our planet .
☠️
Wasn't it kind of them?
...,I am very glad too, 'mystery solved', so that's who's flying those ufo saucers around the sky.
Me too
Brian Eno does seem to be flying a spaceship!
The transition to the guitar solo where the band comes in - "you blew my mind" - is fanfuckingtastic.
Indeed. Blows my mind.
@@danielk301 Oh yeh, its a 3 minute getting there but worth every second when Manzanera lets loose
Blew your mind, huh?
The band were firing on all cylinders at that moment.
Phil Manzanera is one of the great unsung rock guitar hero's
Sinister, deeply unsettling, MASTERPIECE.
Yess exactly that! I was thinking of how to describe it but you said exactly what I didn't knowt was looking for until I saw your description it is just that!
Pure class
Absolutely. Terrifying. Iconic.
He barely blinks during the lyrics. It just makes his delivery so much more thoughtful and intense.
"I blew up your body, but you blew my mind." One of the great lines of popular music.
Totally agree.I was 16 then. My English was shite. So was my life.
Quire agree
I don't know what 'Mindhunter' is.. But I smoked my first joint and dropped acid to this song/album nearly 40 years ago.. Thats what brought me here~!!
Wow your cool
Well it’s a great series on Netflix about the FBI agents who interviewed serial killers in the 70s to create the idea of psychological profiling. Check it out if you like true crime or creepy crime thrillers.
Sounds like you were doing some of your own 'Mindhunting'...
I bet that was a fabulous trip :)
Dang...just wow
Only a genius could write this .The brilliance of Bryan Ferry 😍😍😍
I do believe most of the production of this song (and the rest of songs on their 2nd album 'For Your Pleasure') was done by Brian Eno. (Playing on the electronic equipment.)
Ejemmm...The BRILLLIANCE of Brian Eno.
@@undergroundwarrior70 that's not true at all to be honest eno done the synth and tape work but little to none on overall production of tracks in Roxy.
The best band in the world
No one has ever come close to perfection as they did
William Moylan 😀 Agreed.
not many would bring a lyric like that on stage. respect
1973, let's not forget...
I love how he never blinks.
Maybe fantasy back in the 70 th, but probably today no longer a fantasy but for real. This band was way ahead of their time.
Wayyy ahead of their time ❤️
When the gods are smiling and the planets aligned something epic happens .this song was one of those times
The fact that there is BRIAN ENO on the keyboards blows my mind about this whole band.
2 keyboard players, Mc Kay too
Funny that Eno never saw himself as a musician in the traditional sense. He clearly knew his stuff. And David Bowie rated him highly enough to ask him to work on his Berlin albums, Low, Heroes and Lodger.
you can't mistake Brian Eno.. a humble egoist if there is such a thing ?
Eno couldn't play keyboards, he was 'treating' the sound.. Roxy were way ahead of their time :)
Then went on to make one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs with 'an ending'
This was the song that got me hooked on them. Creepy, audacious, outrageous, and utterly fantastic. I LOVE THEM!
These guys made some of the most creative, innovative, and kickass tunes that shaped my humble existence
Totally agree during this time Roxy were making something new and different . Later Ferry went on to make cover versions of old Tamala Motown songs and smoochy 1940s music and that's when I lost interest.
Easily their best track, so underrated super weird and cool
I'm so glad that the Old Grey Whistle Test existed to capture so much great music live.
Clearly not live, sorry. Vocal possibly. Great performance nevertheless :)
👍 Yep!' Old grey whistle test, loved it!' 🎵=🗝️
it wouldve been really great if they all came out with guitars like on the inside of the album cover@@thevirgohifi
The Police have an OGWT show. Sooooo good.
I was thinking this - sounded so close to the studio recording I assumed they (or some of them) were miming but when you get to the last minute or so the guitar and bass are definitely live.
This is their masterpiece. I just came from watching a video about a $250M New York penthouse apartment, and immediately thought of this song, and had to come here to play it and cleanse myself.
One of the greatest bands ever. I so wanted to be Brian Ferry but ended up looking like Brian Eno
We love both equally, brother.
The very idea that this band was not awarded membership in the Rock Hall Of Fame many years ago,
says volumes about the useless commercial-ity of that pitiful institution.
.
Roxy Music is simple one of the best bands in the history of Rock Music.
Period.
Rectified tonight. Congrats. Long overdue
Amen.
The Rock Hall Of Lame is yet another American commercialisation which actually takes away from the art more than it gives. To NOT be admitted is far more credible than being a member of this Hall of Lameness.
@@davidpepin5709 YASSSSSSSS. Even tho it's a silly institution in a lot of ways, it's so good to see Roxy get theirs while everyone's still around to enjoy the party. Question of the night (for me): will Eno show? (Answer: doubtful, but a girl can dream).
loren salazar The zombies got in the same year as Roxy Music and Radio Head..... Radiohead blows and shouldn’t have gotten in the sane year as those giants
In the early 70s, this certainly would have sounded completely unlike anything that had gone before. Although they later became a bit more commercial, the first two Roxy Music albums really were something else.
I admit i loved Siren too, great album, but nothing they did could beat those first two Roxy albums. They were the catalyst for so much that came later in music, along with Bowie of course.
Lurking, unsettling, creepy, stunning , on point, so transparently revealing , succinctly insightful , trailblazing , trend setting , way ahead of their time.. audacious, mysterious... fantastic... probing... this song..is so tantalizing... it lingers in my mind... like an echo...
I like ya comment Zip mate.
Hearing nothing like this in 2023. Fabulous
Roxy music and Bryan Ferry - the best . Saw them many times .,
Lyrics:
In every dream home a heartache
And every step I take
Takes me further from heaven
Is there a heaven?
I'd like to think so
Standards of living
They're rising daily
But home oh sweet home
It's only a saying
From bell push to faucet
In smart town apartment
The cottage is pretty
The main house a palace
Penthouse perfection
But what goes on
What to do there
Better pray there
Open plan living
Bungalow ranch style
All of it's comforts
Seem so essential
I bought you mail order
My plain wrapper baby
Your skin is like vinyl
The perfect companion
You float in my new pool
De luxe and delightful
Inflatable doll
My role is to serve you
Disposable darling
Can't throw you away now
Immortal and life size
My breath is inside you
I'll dress you up daily
And keep you till death sighs
Inflatable doll
Lover ungrateful
I blew up your body
But you blew my mind
Oh those heartaches
Dreamhome heartaches
His standards of living they're rising daily with different styles and types of dream homes all have a heartache: apartment, cottage, penthouse, open plan bungalow ranch style, lives alone in a wonderful expensive dream home, the main house a palace, what to do there and he ordered a mail order 'blow up doll' sent in plain wrap for privacy to hide it from prying eyes at the post office and neighbors. Skin like vinyl, perfect companion, immortal lover ungrateful, deluxe delightful life size, disposable darling but can't throw the doll away now, dress the doll up daily, his roll is to serve the doll till death sighs, from blowing it up his breath is inside the doll, it floats in his new pool, the blow up doll blew his mind. He is afraid his steps are taking him away from heaven and he better pray in his dream home...loneliness, alone, no human female companionship, he has no real woman companion, no wife lives with him...is his personal dream home heartache...every dream home has a heartache.
If music is about storytelling, this is pure genius - sound and lyrics... OMG
I feel the song is a metaphor for madness, that loneliness can drive you into. I feel the story of the song can be applied to modern times, telling about a love between a human and a sex robot or an AI. Such a masterpiece.
Modern society going to prepared electronic plastic digitized fake-life
Inflatable doll = high maintenance woman 🤷♂️
@@happyangler998 hmmmmmm, I saw it literally as an inflatable sex doll, which further amplifies the loneliness of the song.
Or indeed a metaphor for the anomic age we live in, where we are part of 'The lonely Crowd' where we are each enclosed in our solipsistic in which we live, and die, alone. "They died together, each alone" Virginia Woolf 'The Lighthouse.'
@@garymorgan3314 Yeah man, I feel like an undergraduate living in a dope smoke filled rental. Pass the bong .....
Dad told me about this song and I can’t stop the lyrics are amazing shame this isn’t very popular
Brian Ferry (Genius), Phil guitar solo, and Brian keyboard maestro. Wonderful atmospheric masterpiece 👏
My youth right there. A song with a story, strong pictures, cinematic and oh so clever
"I blew up your body, but you blew my mind" He definitely knew what he was doing there.
He held his EYES open till the break of the song!! WTF!!! Such a brilliant performer!! 💯💯💯
Blimey, I hadn't noticed that before; once I was aware of it, my eyes started watering watching the video.
Wtf, I knew something was strange about his stare but didn't realize this. Hardcore 🎉
He didn't stare The hole time.
This song could have been used in soooooo many movies.....
It's in The Gentlemen.
MIndhunter blew my mind and it floated here
"Love is not the drug and I don't need to score..."
"I bought you mail order, my plain wrapper baby". Fantastic!
To get a picture of how far ahead of it's time this masterpiece is when it was released in 1973 we had instantly forgettable drivel like Showaddywaddy David Cassidy. Mud and the Sweet dominating the pop charts
Spot on!
Brilliant assessment 🌼🏹🏹
Have always loved Roxy music, this song just goes beyond it's limit. Nothing compares. Deepest song!!!! ❤️
The best music is all behind us thank god we can still listen to it
Whoever decided to cut them off (notice abrupt end of song) was a corporate monster and i hope EVERYTHING NICE, SUGAR AND SPICE about them.
The versatility of Roxy music. 👏🏿 How many of today's bands can be diverse in their output
Thanks to Mindhunter I was able to get to know this masterpiece. I have a very broad musical culture and I am also quite grown up (I am 48 years old), but Roxy Music and Brian Ferry have always been only well-known names for me, but until yesterday I would not have been able to associate them with any song ... And now, this. A powerful, dark and obsessive music that reminds me of Led Zeppelin and a text that has the scope of an epiphany. Incredibly beautiful, in short. Roxy Music for ever and ever! 👍👍👍🖖🖖🖖
Have you heard " Ladytron" equally good.
Was so disappointed when they cut the song right before the breakdown in mindhunter
@@frangapani101 Well, Mindhunter made me find the song.. So even without the breakdown, it blew my mind. Listened to it more than 20 times since i head it a few days ago lol
Same here! I knew a part of Roxy Music’s discography, mainly the era after Brian Eno, so this was a shocker to me! Beautiful, dreadful, unsettling yet quite liberating song, a true masterpiece! And used masterfully in that Mindhunter episode ❤
Same. Never heard this until now. I have 10,000 records. I’ve heard of their more popular, radio friendly stuff but never this. Unbelievable. Mind officially blown!
That dude's totally tripping. I love it!
OK: Lyrically; musically...
Early Roxy Music was surely the most underrated band ever?
Quite.
Roxy were another dimension!
The Best Band Ever, the amount of people who have been influenced by Roxy is just one of their legacies.
Just pretentious.
@@kskochko hohoho, go back to Katy Perrie and the Little Minkx
With the increasingly dystopian vision of the future, with Artificial Intelligence taking over and social media causing us to be more isolated than ever, this song resonates more than ever.
Bec spot on comment👍😀🇬🇧
Bowie's diamond dogs album was of that same Ilk. In the 60s and 70s we were looking towards the 21st century and trying to picture the future world through the many sci-fi TV shows of that era. Many prediction s have come true, both good and bad!
SCARY FACT:
A plastic mannequin that could hold conversation would be better than MOST HUMANS TODAY!
Rush - 2112 !!!
that's why at midnight into this 'new' millennium I needed to be alone & listen to '21st century schizoid man' & not be alone...... so I did! but diamond dogs & MMM & this among always remained@@danw1374
This song has put the definition of ephemeral into a bottle. Bravo
This is mind blowing! Now imagine the Roxy Music x Funkadelic tour in '73...this song followed by Maggot Brain! holy shit!
Mercy
Oh Bryan, you are just magnificent ❤
Who's here because of MIndhunter?
The lyrics are superb. Pretty chilling atmosphere for that opening scene
@@@garvnacht2903 I agree. The lyrics... The lead looks like he should be a Holden profile. Lol
You know I am, said son of sam I am
Fuck yeah
So good
45 years ago - and seems like yesterday ....
This is BRILLIANT!!! The music, the lyrics, the clothes...ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!
A masterpiece at the time and still a masterpiece now.
Mesmerizing from start to finish. The words, the style and fashion, the energy!! I wish I could live in the 70s just for the live music experiences.
it was a great time for music and concerts. not a boy band anywhere or dancing bimbos!!
Yo... dude was not blinking at all!
probably the longest blink in music history @.54 ! Approximately 3 seconds long LOL!
Amazing and intense.
Did close lids at 1:20
I know I saw that and tried to imitate and could not last at all. He did not blink, his eyes were getting redder but how the hell he do that. Intense song, one of the most intense ever
That’s why his eyes are so watery
Saw this at southampton gaumont...now Mayflower just as their second album was released, still remember the whole track
Talk about a slow burn. Phil is like a caged tiger. And at 3:05 they let him of the leash.
Imagine hearing this for the first time in the early 80s in the middle of a full-on acid trip . I imagine that would have been quite the experience , if I'd done it .
This was in 1973, not the 80's.
@@mariamartin94 I heard it for the first time in the 80s , on acid . Not clear in my comment I admit .
Jesus, this is fantastic. I've got chills.
My favorite Roxy Music song ever! Ingenious lyrics, a very pleasing chord progression, an awesome guitar solo.
"I BLEW UP YOUR BODY BUT YOU BLEW MY MIND ! ! !" GENIUS ! ! !👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This song is a masterpiece. Just everything creates such an intensity inside me. Disturbing and beautiful at the same time. And then the performance. He just doesn't blink.
Some of the greatest sounds ever made by humans.
Nothing beats Roxy Music first five albums
Deluxe and delightful. A truly terrifying tale of modernist nightmares
Not once does he blink .. till his mind is blown 🎉
Creepfest masterpiece! What a atmospheric delight.
Every time I see a young Bryan Ferry I see Jon Hamm🧐🤔if you don't feel there is good music here today, thank God 🙏🏿 for You Tube.
This crazy long process to arrive at the drop… It always gives me chills
Great find! I saw them, with the original lineup, open for King Crimson at around this time. Best show ever. Ferry at his best, and Manzanera is killing it.
47 years old and this song is still great....
This song will forever live on defiantly one of my favourites close to Led Zeppelin, damn the disco was crazy back than... The 70’s was a hectic era for us, wish I was still in it!
The way they used this song in Mind Hunter was insane. Great choice.
Your skin is like vinyl
The perfect companion...
I'll never tire of this song. I just heard a cover of it and immediately recognized. No one will ever be able to top Roxy.
I think it's more likely just out of sync.#
It's pure J.G Ballard this song! Reminds me of high rise! Wasn't aware that Ballard was an influence on Roxy music, but then I'm sure Ballard can't have been an unknown quantity in art school campus's back then and his influence does tend to pop up in unexpected places.
I never made the connection between this and JGB until just today... but For Your Pleasure has always been the one Roxy lp I hardly ever thought about. Cheers.
Apt observation it seems J. G. Bs work influenced a whole generation of subversive musicians 😂 and I say that in a kind way its wierd how much imagery from his books flood into music videos. For example in reading the drowned world the mental picture I kept getting was the hungry like the wolf video and for some reason because he's vague about clothes my mind starts painting the characters in new romantic/Johnny kidd and the pirates style
@@tonylynch9878 Gary Numan was very obviously a Ballard fan, though he never discusses it. And then, there was a band called The Comstat Angels.
Sterile, cold, perfect.
Nothing sterile about this
ah, but it is, sterile and filthy.
For your Pleasure; what a record!!!!
Seen this when it was brand new at the city hall Newcastle! 4 me this was a brilliant bit of music and writing, probably up in their top 10 ? Back then roxy were untouchable and brilliant but 2 cut a long storey short Bryan ferry got that full of himself with his phoney posh accent and I'm Bryan ferry who are you attitude ? It's only people of my age remember what a good band they were ? Saw them loads of times so I can honestly say they were top class band of undoubtably high standards 👏👍😋❤️
Absolute, total masterpiece. My fave Roxy song ever.
This really is an Eno song when you strip it right down. Can clearly see what he was working on building from his NYC Dark Enough sessions, which were never officially released. Music broken down to it's raw elements. Primitive emotion and questioning eternal themes.
This and mother of Pearl have to be some of the best musical compositions I’ve ever heard, it’s just sublime!
First 3 minutes, Bryan doesn’t blink!
Yeah! I tried staring him out but he won ;)
early botox just kidding
Favorite Roxy tune by a country mile… but how… can Brian… not blink… for so long….
Maybe he was inflatable back then.
this song would be excellent for the opener of a gruesome horror flick
Agreed
It's called reality.
A Roger Corman flick.
check out wonderland , great true horror , badass soundtrack.
sushi girl trailer?
So far ahead of the curve, behold Roxy Music !
I proper started listening to music around ten years ago and I can't beleive I only heard this song from the Gucci advert!!! It's unbelievable how epic this song is!!!!
Check out Mother of Pearl x
Check out the album....the whole album is great.
Those eyes...
Phill's guitar just takes me to another place here 🎸 🎶 🎵
Goldfrapp band owes everything to these guys.
Mindhunter! Great song! And that’s exactly how you should look while singing this song!!
If a music group composes
such a great piece of music history,
then there is only one thing to do.
And that's what they have done again and again.
Utterly amazing. All these years later, still ahead of their time.
What an amazing song, a creepy bizarre love song that never fails to dazzle, the live version of "Viva! Roxy Music" is even better!
Yes I agree viva is Roxys best version👍
I agree viva roxy music version is my favorite version
I saw Bryan Ferry August of 2017, and he sang this song. It was haunting live, but phenomenal. One of his very best songs, and one of my favorites.
These lyrics are prophetic .
i was 14 when i bought this album , I loved it then and I still love it now
classic track
1973 the pinnacle of Art Rock.
In my opinion one of the Best Roxy Music's tracks......Going into the madness of loneliness
Absolute Masterpiece from outer space... the early Roxy Music was the most underrated band in the Universe...
Phil Targett-Adams alias Phil Manzanera, one of the greatest guitarists to come out of England. Love listening to him. One hell of a band as well.
So ahead of its time fantastic bryan ❤
