I'm concerned about the extra cost, as these hubs are not regular low-cost hubs
I had to discover this setup because the issue is caused by a hardware limitation on the M1 systems, when the M2 and newer systems have been coming out, it has meant that they don't have the same issue as they can use Thunderbolt for one of the monitors. However with M1, there are no other ways to make this work. There is a link in the description for the compatible hubs and you don't always need the latest and greatest to make this work. There should be a few more affordable options to get you up and running. Thanks for watching and commenting, I hope this helps!

Hi, I have my M1 MacBookPro plugged into a Lenovo Thinkpad docking station. It is the same one I use for my Windows work laptop that is used to extend my display from my laptop monitor to my two monitors I have on my desk. It works perfectly fine with that. Before I downloaded the display link software when I plug my M1 MacBookPro into the Lenovo Thinkpad docking station using a Lenovo USB-C cable it does extend my MacBookPro to both monitors. The problem is that both monitors are showing up as one monitor when I go to System Preferences -> Display -> Arrange. After downloading the software it is the same, my MacBook Pro is showing up on both my monitors but still seeing both monitors as one and duplicating on them while showing a different screen on the MacBookPro itself. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it may have something to do with when I click the DisplayLinks icon on the top right of my screen it says "Please allow your DisplayLink device to connect to this Mac", but I'm not sure what this means because it is connected to my MacBook Pro it is just duplicating on both my external monitors and only recognizing them as one instead of two. Just in case there is any confusion my built in display is showing one screen and extending to both my external monitors, but the external monitors are duplicating this same screen and I would like them to all be extended from the built in display and show different screens. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi, thanks for your detailed comment, I think the most likely cause of this issue is that the dock you are using doesn't support DisplayLink software. This would explain why the software installed on the Macbook is asking you to connect your DisplayLink device. It works on your windows laptop because the graphics output of your windows laptop is intented to support multiple screens, whereas this video's solution for Macbook M1 systems relies on DisplayLink software to 'boost' the capabilities somewhat. I have a link in the description and in the pinned comment with compatible DisplayLink hubs that should provide the support you need.

Finally, a solution that I can use in India also... Thanks!
Thanks for the great video and support. Some users reported mouse lag with the Dell 3100 dock on Amazon reviews. Did you notice any such issues? Thanks in advance.

Thank you, Sean! I had had a hard time trying to solve this issue until I run into your video. All set up now. I just have an issue using my headphones when connected to the front of the hub; it would really mess up Zoom (crashed) every time I tried to use it this way. I still have to try to connect a back up drive through the hub to see how it worked. monitors are doing well. Any comment on these issues?
Hi John, thanks for your video! Very well explained. I just have one question; isn't there another way, with all the time that has passed since these MacBooks were released, other than getting a DisplayLink-compatible hub? I'm concerned about the extra cost, as these hubs are not regular low-cost hubs
I had to discover this setup because the issue is caused by a hardware limitation on the M1 systems, when the M2 and newer systems have been coming out, it has meant that they don't have the same issue as they can use Thunderbolt for one of the monitors. However with M1, there are no other ways to make this work.
There is a link in the description for the compatible hubs and you don't always need the latest and greatest to make this work.
There should be a few more affordable options to get you up and running.
Thanks for watching and commenting, I hope this helps!
Great video. I followed the steps. My issue is I cannot see 3 monitors in my display. Just one big one and my laptop. Is there something else I can do to get it show 3 monitors? Two external and my mac? My goal is to work in clamshell mode and use the two externals.
Thanks! It was very usefull. I bought the dell box yesterday from amazon (Canada) and received it today and It works!
worked on M3 Macbook pro, Thank you!
This is awesome. After Apple and Dell support saying this would never work, you saved the day. HOWEVER, night shift doesn't seem to translate from the laptop to the monitors with this setup. Do you have any suggestions?
Hi Sean, thank you for your review and I bought a D3100 and it works like a charm. I have one question though, all ports are working on the dock except for the audio port. Do you know how to make it work?
Thank you! I use the same docking station as you. It's very helpful for me!!!
Hello. Is it possible to switch off the laptop screen while keeping the two external ones on? Thanks.
Yeah, its at the end of the video
Awesome man. The most detailed and helpful tutorial so far!
Tank you so much. I just have a question. Is it posiible to rotate a monitor?, this is because I want to rotate one of my monitors on vertical.
Yes, this should be fine, you will just need to set the orientation in the settings
Hi Sean, Your instruction has helped at lot and my mac M1 works with 2 Acer monitors in extended mode. Thanks a lot for this great video.

Hey, I have an M1 2020 Mac running on Sonoma 14.2.1. When I use the display link app, and with my dell hub, my two external monitors are duplicated screens and I cannot find a way to make them different
You should check the compatibility of the hub with DisplayLink. I have a link in the video description with a list of all compatible hubs.
I use a Macbook Air M3 and I would like to work with two external monitors and the lids opened. What your you recommend as doc station?
All of the dock stations in the link (unpaid) via the description will work. I use a Macbook M3 Max now and use the same Dell hub as the video.

I got what I want to know thanks to your video.
However, since background music was louder than your voice, It was difficult to hear what you were saying.
I hope it will be improved in following videos!
Can I connect three monitors this way ? Like getting a HDMI to USB-A converter and plugging that into the USB-A port while the first two monitors are connected via HDMI ports ?
Nice video. I have also ordered M1 Macbook Pro. But on reditt in comment USB-A ports and USB-C ports on docking stations is not working. Is it true? Did you faced any issues like latency in move movement etc?

What is the connector that you got from apple? The one that connects from the laptop to the hub? you mentioned usbc to dongle? what is that?
There is a USB-B to USB-A that came with the hub and then the dongle from USB-A to USB-C

Also does this pass charge, as ideally I wouldn't want to keep my mac on continuous charge?

You will need to use a hub that supports DisplayLink, there's a link in the description to all the supported ones. This will work for any laptop.
Why do you use slower display link with drivers when you have thunderbold on every with DP on every USB-C and (if I have recorgnized) HDMI?
This video was made for M1 Macs where they only supported one video output, that's why. If you have a newer model, you can just use the Thunderbolt ports :)
Thanks for the video! So when you use Insomniac, will your mac still go to sleep when you don't use it for a while (whatever you set it to I guess), and then wake up with a shake of the mouse?

Hello,
I have an older(2015) Macbook Air w/BigSur 11.7. I downloaded the appropriate drive from DisplayLink. When everything is powered up my monitors both say no HDMI detected and go into sleep mode. All cables are brand new. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey, it sounds like your hub may not be a DisplayLink hub or that the DisplayLink software is incompatible.
You can see the list of DisplayLink hubs in the description and pinned comment.
You can also go on the DisplayLink site and check compatibility with your OS.
Good luck!

I have a Mokin multiport adapter which supports 2 HDMI for monitors 1020 at 60Hz with Macbook pro M2, only able to make one monitor work, what would be the trick to make the two monitors work?
You need a hub that has DisplayLink support. Some of the M3 Max etc now support multiple monitors without a hub but the method in the video needs a DisplayLink hub. Theres a bunch of them in the link in the video description if you are looking for the right one.
I'm following the steps in this video, not entirely sure I understand the purpose of the download. But in any case, downloaded it and still only one of the two monitors connects. The second external monitor flashes on and off with my desktop wallpaper. I don't know if it matters but I'm using the MacBook air M2 and the same dell docking station. Thanks for any help!

Hello, I have a macbook pro 2016 15 inch and want to connect 4 monitors. I am able to only connect 2 monitors is there anything that you recommend?
This setup in the video with a DisplayLink compatible hub (full list via link in the video description) will make sure that you can use more than one monitor. If you check that list, each hub has notes on how many monitors it can support.
Hope that helps!
I hope you can help.
I use a Dell brand hub. both 2 screens display at the same time (mirror the screen) and do not expand. I've tried all the different exits. Either displayport or hdmi and both. i've even tried hdmi to typce. the damn screen either reflects, it doesn't expand. or it doesn't give any image at all. the hub is the same as the one in your video. although I downloaded displaylink, I couldn't solve the problem. please help.
Are you sure it is the exact same hub? There are many that Dell make that look the same. It's really important that the Hub has DisplayLink built-in.
From what you're saying, it sounds like the hub you have may not have DisplayLink - check the link in the description to see if your hub is on the list.
@@SeansCreativeStudio My hub is on the list. yes, displaylink supports it. either it gives the same image to 2 screens and the settings show only 1 screen. or it doesn't work at all. i have done a clean installation many times for displaylink Jul. the cables are also intact, I have checked them many times. I also used different entrances. but in vain..

Hiya. I'm dumb enough not to understand the connection between the dock station and the Mac. Can't I have a direct cable connection instead of yet another dongle?
Thank you@@SeansCreativeStudio
