Something I absolutely love about this book is the way Jake's teaching career is shown while he's living in Jodie. The way King writes teacher characters like Johnny Smith always fascinated me because of how earnest they were portrayed, and how much of an impact they have on the students they teach. The mice and men play and both Jodie jamborees are some of my favourite moments from any book because of this
I just finished reading this book yesterday and it will stay with me for a long time. It is an amazing story and I cannot recommend it enough. One of the best books I've ever - and will ever - read. Stephen King is a master storyteller, especially when it comes to character development.
I read this in 2017, and I had forgotten all about the pound cake thing. Lol. That was pretty cheesy, but it was a great book. I love the concept of time travel and this definitely made me want to go back to the 50's and 60's. And yes I agree, this is a book for any one, no matter what genre you normally read.
One of my favourites of his! I think it might be his best book. I actually lent this to my Nana who's never read anything along the lines of King before and she loved it! What you said about recommending it to everyone is true! One of my favourites is The Dead Zone and I loved 11.22.63 because it's basically the opposite of The Dead Zone plot wise.
A little piece of trivia (which I'm sure you know because..well..your King knowledge is formidable) he named the town Jodie because he's a fan of my 2nd favorite author Jodi Picoult. He said he added the e at the end to make it sound more Texan.
It's my opinion that with a couple of exceptions (Tolkien mostly), Stephen King is the best writer and story teller the world has seen. This book is so good. Everything in it is great.
I enjoyed 11-22-63. Have you read institute yet? You should if you haven't. The Gwendy's books are fun just really short. I can't wait for Fairytale in September 2022.
Yep, I’ve read everything he’s published so far - I enjoyed The Institute, it was a solid mid-level King book for me, likewise the Gwendy stories. I’m also pumped for Fairy Tale - got it preordered with my local bookshop!
@@DaveReadsKing I have read 28 King books (the only one I have not been able to get into, is Under The Dome). I like the DT series, so I tried The Passage by Justin Cronin and Way Of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I couldn't get into either book. Any suggestions on a book series you think I might enjoy? I have read the Mr. Mercedes trilogy and Doctor Sleep. Thanks Charles
@@charlescomeauxjr9037 As in non-King books? There aren't many other series I've read, but would definitely recommend I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid, NOS4R2 and 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill, Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke, Dark Lines by Jack Harding, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and Montague's Carnival of Terror and Delights by Jamie Stewart
@@DaveReadsKing I will check them out. I just finished Gwendy's Final Task. I enjoyed hearing some familiar company names. I am late to reading books. My reading comprehension is terrible, but audiobooks have changed that. Once I finish Cell. I want to give a couple of authors a chance. I can always go back to SK. Thanks for taking the time to chat! Charles
At an op shop looking for game of thrones books, and I happen to stumble upon this book for 2$! I cannot believe I found a copy, will read this next, after doctor sleep!
The Grandfather question is easier to dismiss. What if a person who was alive in 1958 or shortly after meets their past self? My Dad theorized that you would disappear. I know you only talk Stephen King here, but one time travel story I've read made a rule that you cannot travel back to a time when you are already alive.
Bk to the future rules. IF Marty 1 and Marty 2- see each other or possibly know about each other, it’s like matter and anti matter colliding.Definutky not God.
I had a great alt ending but it would nik from, I think it’s the dead zone. It turns out He- jake , ends up killing Kennedy- this time, to set the timeline bk to like it was when Kennedy died the first time. He’s in his jail cell on death row and he’s dictating his narration into a tape recorder- reel to reel. The priest cones into give him last rites.
My fav SK book. 10 out 10. Great review as usual. TECHNICAL POINT: you need a microphone other than the built-in on your camera. The video image/lightning are superb. The sound is really bad. Voice sounds hollow. HAVE A LOOK at some other good YT videos with the person talking to the camera. A few years ago maybe this wasn't such a big deal. In 2022 a video with bad sound stands out for the worse.
I don't think the sound is 'really' bad - it's not ideal, I know, but I have to make use of the equipment I have access to. I can't afford to invest in anything new at the moment and you are literally the first person in almost two years who has said my videos have 'bad' sound.
@@DaveReadsKing If I tell you is because the sound doesn't match the image quality (or content quality, for that matter). You don't need one of those mikes used by streamers on Twitch, just to put the mike next to your neck (or throat/mouth). Even clip-on wireless microphones are really cheap.
@@DaveReadsKing Ok, when you can, the change is obvious. That's why I told you to have a look at (some of the) other channels. When you compare, the difference becomes even more apparent.
Isn’t there a big plot hole though? Can’t Jake kill Oswald up and up? When Jake returns to the diner, he sees if Kennedy died or not. If K is in fact still alive, Oswald killled him. Jake stays in the diner. If Kennedy is dead, Oswald is inocent, so he,Jake, leaves the diner once more through the time portal then steps bk into the diner visa the time portal and, wola, Oswald is bk in business?
Maybe, but what time travel story doesn’t have plot holes and complications? Besides, for me the heart of this book is Jake and Sadie rather than the Kennedy stuff
@@DaveReadsKing True up to a point. It’s not really about the rules of the game like with my T T book I’m pretending to write. I still think one should be consistant though.
@@chillwill120Point well taken. He , Jake , may as well hang on for another 6 months to 11/22/63, and potentially save some time.I now realize Jake HAS to wait arround for two yrs before he can even consider going bk to the furture.😋
Do you mean sex? If so, yes, there is a lot of sex in 11.22.63 - it’s all very beautiful and tasteful, but if your family is averse to sex then this is one to avoid
For me, this is book is fairly overrated. I still enjoyed it, I gave it 3 stars. I found the first 300-400 pages to be really good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the romance elements he introduces. I think if he would have stuck with the initial premise and made it a much shorter novel, I would have enjoyed it more. Certainly not a bad book, but everyone and their mom puts it in their top 5, or it's their favorite King book, that's why I think it's overrated.
Fair enough - I feel similarly about The Stand. For me, the romance is just about the strongest part of this novel, but I always love hearing other opinions and takes. Thanks for the comment!
