  • What is the normal sertraline dose. What happens when you change your sertraline dosage? What if you want to stop taking sertraline? These are common questions, and I hope this video answers them all!
Sertraline (zoloft) is used to treat many types of mental illness such as depression, general anxiety disorder, PTSD and OCD. Therefore it is a common medication for people - in other words don’t worry that you are different. The most common dose of sertraline is 50mg but many people take 25mg, 100mg, 150mg or even 200mg which is the maximum dose.
I made a video on how SSRIs work: • How Does Sertraline Wo...
The majority of people start with 50mg per day although for some anxiety-based disorders your GP may prefer to start with a base 25mg and monitor changes. Lots of people find that the majority of their anxiety or depression symptoms can be managed with a 25-50mg dose but if you have not seen improvement in the second month it is possible your GP may suggest an incremental increase in dose to 100mg and possibly further. We are all wired differently and respond differently so please don’t worry if you are on a higher dose of sertraline; this doesn’t mean you are unusual, it just means there is more opportunity to help with increased medication.
So what happens when you change dose?
Your Dr may suggest an increase or decrease in sertraline dose. Please don’t make the decision yourself or double-dose on rough days. Seek medical expertise. Dosage can be increased fairly quickly over a series of weeks so regular contact with you Dr is very useful.
Increases in dose might see a return to some of the physical and mental side effects you will remember from the first couple of weeks. I would say that you will likely recover from these quicker than before as your body is familiar with the chemical change. This might mean an upset stomach, dry mouth, headaches, etc. but this should pass quickly.
    What about stopping/decreasing dose?
Decreases in sertraline dose should be carefully managed by your Dr. As tempting as it is to want to become “less reliant” on antidepressants you have created an environment in your brain where the SSRI plays an important role. When I have ‘gone cold turkey’ it has hit me like a ton of bricks. Speak to your GP if you want to reduce your sertraline dose - particularly at higher dosages as they will likely want a slow/steady scale back over a series of weeks.

I have been on 200mg for nearly one week now and yes I do feel the 200mg is starting to work as I was on 150mg before and wasn't working well it was just keeping me on the water line but not above. I do feel more relaxed and calmer than before and less stressed out but I do feel my brain is a little numb and not thinking that much as before is this common as some other people on the 200mg dose as feel the same one said to me they felt like a zombie.

Good question, from my experience any dosage change can result in brain fog but this is usually (hopefully) temporary. I would carefully monitor these feelings and if they persist, speak to your Dr about it.

How do you know if to up the dose exactly?? I’ve been on 50mg for 2 months now. My mood has definitely improved, hardly no negative thoughts which is good and much more rational thoughts/thinking which is great, but I feel like the meds have only taken the edge of my social anxiety… I no longer get very anxious and my heart palpitations seem to have stopped which is good, but still have like a mild social anxiety.. Does this mean my 50mg dose is working well?? Or should I increase it to 75mg or 100mg? Basically what I’m asking, is sertraline supposed to COMPLETELY get rid of anxiety or just take the edge off? 🤔

I've been on 50mg for the last 7 weeks, I have seen a big difference in how I deal with social situations and overall mood, just the general sense of wellbeing is amazing! however I still felt a sense of doom just before doing a social task, but I still persevere and once I'm in that social situation I am tip top and normal! so I asked to increase it to 75mg, the doctor wanted me to raise it to 100mg but I really don't want to get demotivated or fatigued in my day to day life (apparently ssri's tend to do that at higher doses?) so I started 75mg.
my question to everyone is I'm thinking of taking L-tyrosin and L-theanine (which is found in green tea) but in pill form, for increasing concentration and motivation. I checked medical guidelines (am a healthcare prof) and there isn't any interactions, I wanted to know if anyone has tried those supplement whilst on sertraline?
I have been taking high strength multivitamins (alpha men by myvitamin + 4000iu +omega 3) alongside sertraline and I don't know this intense feeling of wellbeing may be due to that or sertraline alone.

I find your insight fascinating. I was just prescribed Sertraline last week when I was in an inpatient Psychiatric Hospital. My first day I started on 50mg. During my second day I was bumped up to 100mg. Now that I am Discharged from the Hospital. I'll be taking 100mg for a week, 150mg the next, and 200mg thereafter. I haven't noticed any side effects yet. Definitely glad I am on this medication. Gotta love grippy sock vacations.

I'm on 100mg at the moment, which is a low dosage for OCD and I feel much better. I might go up to 150mg, but already it's like night and day, when it comes to my OCD. I had pretty bad side effects though, but it was worth pushing through. Now I only have insomnia, but that's nothing in comparison to full blown OCD.

My entire family is on sertraline, for years now. After a major panic attack, they prescribed me buspirone and it did nothing so went to 50ng of sertraline and then 100 and it’s been a few months, it’s helped but I feel my depression getting more intense, super low self esteem and motivation, feeling very lost and hopeless, so I’m on 150mg now as of the last three days, so no affect yet obviously. My sister is on 200mg a day and my mom is on 150 a day and my dad is on 200 a day as well. We are about to lose our home we’ve lived in for 25 years and we all just have serious depression and some of us also have bipolar disorder as well as very unhealthy addictive personalities. Hoping 150mg will work??? I have noticed it makes me sleep faster when I take it at night with my 50mg diphenhydramine that I’ve been taking for years. I woke up with a wicked headache today tho.

Hello. I started taking Sertraline 3 years ago due to having a Depressive episode and anxiety. I had never had any mental health issues before that. So I started at 25mg and then went up to 50mg about a week later. After about 2 weeks on 50mg I felt much better and stayed on 50mg for about 2 years with great results. I asked my doctor if I could come back down to 25mg and felt just as fine. I stayed on 25mg for the past year and about 2.5 weeks ago, I started to feel anxiety and depression come back. I think it is due to the pandemic. I was worrying a lot about my family and myself catching the virus. I spoke with my doctor and she raised me back up to 50mg. I have been on 50mg for the past 2 weeks with no positive results. Do you think that the Sertraline will work again for me? Should I stick it out or have my dosage raise again?

I started taking 50 mg and have taken it for 9 days. 4 days ago I started having more anxiety, negative thoughts and chest tightness. I’m worried that the medication isn’t working. Thanks for the video!

    • @AlexRobbMentalHealth
      @AlexRobbMentalHealth  4 года назад +3

It looks like that (in total) you have been taking Sertraline for just over 3 weeks. This is quite early to feel any benefit unfortunately. You've also changed dose regularly so the side effects you are feeling now are probably a sign that the dose is at a level your body is noticing something! As you have just moved to 50mg I would expect you to give it 2 weeks in total before all side effects settle but you will probably find them subside within the next few days.
The medication won't necessarily work until week 6 so I would imagine you will start to feel some benefit by the end of April. This might seem like a while away and things might improve sooner but you are on the right path. Side Effects will settle soon and then you just have to be consistent in taking it every day!

I don't have depression, but i do have anxiety and panic. I feel that therapy and coping strategies are far more important than medicine for moderate anxiety and panic. Do you agree that it will always be hard to stop meds if you don't work on yourself and engage in therapy, particularly CBT?
I was put on 25mg of zoloft for 5 days by my gp after suffering a panic attack and not knowing anything about panic attacks. I then had a therapy session about my panic attack and made the decision to stop before I really started the zoloft. After five days at 25mg they still wanted me to taper off. Once I learned more about anxiety and panic, I've been able to handle it and everything is getting better, daily. Just my experience.

I think therapy is vital and particularly prior to taking yourself off medication. Personally, I don't worry too much about the length of time I need to take Sertraline but understand other's will.
Understanding how anxiety works is a crucial stage of improvement and I always advise people to get access to some sort of talking therapy.
It also depends on the severity of mental illness - right now I require Sertraline to get through things and appreciate the impact it is having on my life!

Milo Moores how did things go for you?

I did 25mg for 2 weeks and then just this past week I upped it to 50mg. Tuesday will be a week I've done 50mg.
I haven't been able to sleep a full night's sleep for weeks now. My doctor recommended taking the pill in the morning instead of before bed. And it hasn't seemed to help. I'll sleep for 3-4 hours and then I'll be awake off and on the rest of the night just tossing and turning. Is this something you experienced as well?
Also the other major side effect I've had is not being able to have an orgasm. I still have my sex drive and I can still get an erection. I just can't have an orgasm.. Is this something you have experienced?
I don't want to just give up on the drug since it's only been 3 weeks but obviously sleeping and orgasms are a very important part of life. I'm just hoping these symptoms go away soon because I'm getting pretty discouraged

      Hi Brian!
Orgasms - I had an issue with this and managed to get through it fairly quickly. It effects some people for longer unfortunately. Did you mention this to your Dr too? I wonder if they might suggest a different drug. It could be that there is an element of anxiety surrounding orgasm now? My issue was amplified once I 'decided' it was going to be hard to orgasm and I had to really reprogram myself to go with the flow.
Sleep - A real tough one. I had serious sleeping issues as a teen and early 20-something. During these years I struggled to sleep more than a few hours a night and would spend countless hours lying awake. I happened to listen to a audiobook about IBS which had a significant amount of detail regarding self-hypnosis for sleep and mindfulness so I ended up with a load of relaxation techniques. I would suggest getting Headspace and listening to it before bed and if you wake up (headphones if you share a bed!). I would also change mindset and not worry about lack of sleep. It's kind of strange but when I used to worry about volume of sleep, I struggled to sleep because I was always anxious I wasn't asleep yet - now I just accept sleep will happen, I fall asleep quicker. I'm not sure that made sense but shedding a fear of being over-tired can often result in better sleep.
