- While at the Grove, OK Coin Show I interviewed Doug Davis who is one of if not THE most well known anti-counterfeiting voice in the Coin and Bullion Community.
Doug is the Founder of the Numismatic Crime Information Center (numismaticcrimes.org/) and the Director of the Anti-Counterfeiting Educational Foundation (acefonline.org/). Doug had tons of insight and information into the increasingly bad Fake Coins, Fake Silver and Fake Gold problem that Collectors and Stackers as well as Dealers themselves have to deal with all the time!
This is probably one of my favorite interviews on the channel and I hope you like it as well! Be sure to leave a comment below and let me know what you think!

Once upon a time, copying another countries coin was a declaration for war. How times have changed!
China drove american troops out of guam Biden is gonna retreat up into his ass. Nobody is protecting america and american interests.
When to think about the time and effort to make such forgeries, this has to be done at a massive scale. That's something that isn't easy to hide, so this has to by done at a high level, maybe even state sponsored.

Counterfeiting coins is the least of it. Unfortunately we have no real leadership to respond.
When the outcome is worse than death, wars are fought with other means unless one of the parts is fool enough to engage in physical violence.
The war is already on.
Maybe the mint should be selling to regular taxpayers and NOT the dealer houses like they do now

There is about 250 counterfeit coin websites being monitored, which means there is probably a lot more. That is scary. We have to be careful when buying coins.

My brother in law bragged about buying silver blanks ( something of that nature) for spot. I told him to be careful with that kind of buying because it’s too easy to counterfeit. He’s somewhat of a BS’r and said he knew the guy. It was an internet company so he didn’t know them from Jack.
I’m guessing he got taken and doesn’t even know it.
Thanks for the alert! The way he talked about how China wants to discredit the US dollar makes sense. China is also buying up ton of silver & gold. So, lets turn the tables and post more about the counterfeit money coming out of Asia.

@@benoitbricet8885 should we tally up all the rights and wrongs of every country against every other country?
@@strangevisions5162 Yes. It would be staggering and, as someone said, grounds for war.
For silver, there is no other metal with the low resistance or high conductivity of pure silver. The best test is for magnetic induction shunting which measures the ability for a coin to shunt an AC magnetic field. The moving field can be either a moving coin over a fixed magnet refereed to Magnetic Slide Counterfeit Magnet Test, or an induction based test. Due to the hardness of silver, it rings when struck. There are tests for the pitch of silver coins when dropped or struck. Softer metals will not even be close in pitch. Many are afraid to hit a coin to avoid damage to the fine surface of un-circulated coins. There is induction testing that can use a magnetic transducer coil to ring the coin without contact. These can find the resonant frequency of coins in the package. These are not very common as many types of packaging dampen the vibration and reduce the response in the package. However the frequency of the ring is important for validation. I have considered building validators for coins due to the cost of most validation equipment. Not sure how much of this technology is tied up in patents or copyright, which is why I have not built and marketed any yet. Building one from scratch using normal physics may impede on someones copyright or patent. Not ready to go broke on lawyers. My design one from scratch and open source the plans, much like the Open Source VNA Nano Network Analyzer.
Maybe you should write this former cop at their website address and ask him about your plans and about said copyrights. They should have good information for you. God bless....
A good metal detector and a way of moving the coin at a controlled rate and distance across the coil could be a very reliable method for testing, might need to develop a table of values for known good coins to compare. You might be able to use a relatively cheap detector to do the job.
@@laserflexr6321 Much less complicated is an electromagnet solenoid coil driven by an audio signal generator. This creates the same moving magnetic field on the coin, and the current induced in the coin directly imparts current in the driving coil. Current drawn by the amplifier is measured to see the resistance of the metal. High frequencies see the skin of the metal, and lower frequencies see deep in the metal to expose tungsten with a thin gold wrap for example. If swept in frequency, the ringing frequency of the coin or bar will show up as a tuning fork. The test quickly identifies the clear ring of silver and shows the non ring of non ferris copper, brass, etc in place of silver. There is a reason silver was used in small bells. There is no counterfeit silver bell with the same clear tone.
@@isettech You clearly understand the art, but White's, Fisher, Garret, Minelab, Tesoro and others have already done the heavy lifting on coils, mosfets, a/d decoders, signal analysis etc just add a controlled speed conveyor to an off the shelf metal detector for a precision, repeatable measurement, and if you develop a testing routine, you will have certifiable testing results. I have an old MXP that if it says it is a penny, (76) it has every time been a solid copper US penny. Would be even more certain with the same surroundings every time. The mechanics of the coil, the coil driver circuit and the receiver circuit are not too complicated for a person with reasonable understanding of electronics, but why reinvent the wheel? Make a fortune on the application and help ID crooks as a public service. Make all the coin shows and clean up. Goo fer it!
@@laserflexr6321 Not looking forward to fighting all the patent trolls who think they can patent physics and it's application to metals. That is the real issue. Put something out there and someone will claim prior art and a patent. The theory for sending sound down a wire is physics, but the patent was held by Alexander Graham Bell. I'm sure induction coin validation, an application of physics, will be tied up by the patent holders.
And with this current Administration being friendly to China oh, I think this counterfeiting issues going to get far worse
Leave out the bias. political comments as it doesn't pay to call names, ...frankly...haven't we had enough of that? So given that....it doesn't make any difference who is in the WH...the counterfeiting will continue anyhow, right? So wise up a bit now

Circulated Constitutional Silver is the way to go.
They make that too...
@@GardenerEarthGuy So you are saying that they are counterfeiting circulated dimes, quarters and halves? If you have any additional info in this regard I would like to see it.
@@hughjohnson4071 I can tell you that I have personally found a fake Walking Liberty half dollar. I got it in an ebay lot. I know my silver quite well, so I instantly knew it was a fake. It was the only bad one in the lot. The seller probably didn't even realize he had a fake in there. I would be surprised to see any fakes of common quarters or dimes. There wouldn't be much profit in it. The "quality" isn't that great on the fake I found. It may have been created when silver was close to $50/oz. It's important to buy from a reputable source, but equally important to be familiar with what you're buying. My LCS once sold me a couple pieces of "sterling" flatware that was only plated. He hadn't scratched deep enough when he acid tested it, but as I said, I know my silver. After I got it home and took my magnets to them, I knew they were fake. They didn't stick to the magnet, but they just didn't react to it the way silver does, so I knew they were only plated.

Wow ! Great Heads up! My question would be is a number of video's on technology to ascertain besides weight and sound and magnet? I saw the ones on those but, are there others? Also flea markets and antique malls have cases where old coins and old jewelry are sold. Do those malls or markets know the individuals who are sell coins or jewelry are on the up and up? It's never apparent to the buyer who those people are, except there may be a booth number marked on the receipt. How is there a way to get back to the person who rented the booth to sell such items? It could very well be a dealer who has a booth or it might not be a dealer but, just an individual making a buck off folks.

It really stinks because getting good buys at flea markets and garage sales are one of the fun parts of it all and when there are so many good counterfeits out there...of even oddball stuff like 2 cent pieces. It also makes it harder to sell person to person. Do the counterfeits correspond to a VAM, such that if you check against the existing vams for morgans, or breen varieties for half cents, or etc, that 1807 coin will actually be a variety 7 of the date, or do they generally not correspond to any vam and can be detected that way?

It's not just coins. When I was thinking about making jewelry in a more serious, business way, I started looking for silver chains and findings. I found some really cheap ones coming from China on E-Bay. They say "pure silver" and "marked 925" but when you question the seller, they will admit it is an alloy. I reported the listings to the government and E-Bay because that's illegal, but there were so many it would be a full time job to report them all.
Wonderful, thank you boss
Is there any equipment available to validate gold and silver coinage, bars etc? That would go a long way for customer’s confidence.

That was great thank you thank you so much
Is Bullionjoy via Amazon a reputable seller? I bought a silver Britannia and a silver Krugerrand from them. They both look legit, have certificates and aren’t magnetic. How can I tell?
There are many tests you can do at home.
Best one for you since you’ve already tested with a magnet,
Check the dimensions of the coins with a caliper and a scale. If the dimensions and weight meet the mints specifications they are good.
The way this is working is you are effectively checking the density of the material, without having to converting it to a g/cm3.
Coin grading & certification should be made compulsory. Technology can be used to make grading & certification much cheaper. But grading costs do need to be reasonably affordable.
Thanks Doug !

Doug, do you use X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to prove the coin is silver or gold? Also, work out the density from D = M / V. Obtain M on a top pan balance. V = volume of a cylinder = 3.142 (pie) x radius squared x depth. If the numbers don't add up, its fake. If you take possession of the physical metal, even with a certificate, carry out your own tests.
