We have a really positive balloon story: One trip, when we were checking in, a family was leaving and still had their balloon and "pixie dusted" it to my daughter who, for the reset of the triop, was excited to then "pixie dust" it to another family when it was time for us to leave, which we did. So, one good thing about them is they do last for a really long time, and at least 3 families got to enjoy one balloon and my daughter got to appreciate the blessing of "paying it forward" a bit

I disagree on the pressed penny being a bad souvenir!! My kids loved finding the different machines and it kept them occupied during the walks...plus the cost for a souvenir is unbeatable.

I would rather have pressed pennies than a Funko POP or toy that sits on a shelf.

I think it's so wonderful and endearing how much Pete loves his mom. He's such a great son.
Pressed pennies are awesome. I'm turning the pennies my kids collect into wall art. Their mission is to collect between 60-100 pennies during the week we are there. So for between $30-$50 , I know I will ultimately have a unique and wonderful keepsake for my home and a special memory.

I am an elementary education major and I really want to wear my ears for storytime/other situations where they would be appropriate and help keeps students focused. Plus, I am a Floridian and a Disney MANIAC, I have been since before I can remember, so no one expects less from me, haha!
Also, for parents going to Disney and your children want a balloon, please know you can VERY carefully untie the bottoms and deflate them, then re-inflate them at a party store if you have to get on a plane or don't want them to pop in your car. Happy day to everyone! :)

Krista Davis as a fellow education major, I love your vision with using the ears! It’s excellent that you want to bring your passion into the classroom, which is exactly what I want to do as well. The kids feed off of passion, plus they have something great to relate to!

    • @TheSelfCareWitch
      @TheSelfCareWitch 6 лет назад

Jennifer Klumpp That is adorable. I love ears as they have multiple reasons to get them. My reason: I am a Nightmare Before Christmas junkie. I have the ear hat, the ear headband, and the smaller top hat that are themed around Jack. And I intend to get a Jack themed Santa hat sometime around Christmas. And I do it to add to my memories and to add to my collection. I have two plushies, a Deadly Nightshade vase, and a sketch of Jack from Walt Disney World. It makes my collection unique.

  • @LeviLippincott

I agree about the balloons. Though I have to say this last trip when we were in Nemo at Epcot someone tied a balloon to our stroller. My 3 year old loved it. That being said I was very cognizant of those around me when we had it attached to the stroller. We lowered it and covered it with a jacket during fireworks and other entertainment like the parade.
I also made sure to avoid hitting people with it as much as possible, if I noticed it bumping someone I apologized. Now I had a bunch of first timers with me and it did make it easy for them to follow me in the crowds and at night when it was lit up, it was also easy to find our stroller when the cast members rearrange the strollers for efficiency.
It stayed on our stroller the whole trip, the inner balloon started fading towards the end. I'm glad it was gifted to us because I wouldn't have (still wouldn't) paid for one.

  • @PureHaole

Agree with many of the Worst list, however I disagree with the ears.
We took my 70+ year-old in-laws for a Florida vacation in 2016. We hit up all the parks and didn't get much of a reaction out of them (didn't smile once, not even for pictures), but when they saw their ears...with their names embroidered...they lit up like children. They bought a bunch of stuff on the trip, but there's only one thing they keep in the display cabinet from this trip :)
Keep up the great work! Also, Charles might be my spirit animal :)

I agree with balloons and glow/bubble stuff. I’m surprised that food items didn’t make the list. It’s a lollipop. But since it’s shrink wrapped in Disney characters, it’s $4-5. To me that’s a serious waste. But I’m pretty much not going to spend my money on any souvenir that isn’t special to Disney World. Like you aren’t going to find it at the Dollar Tree or Walgreens for far less money. And that’s why the Mickey Ears, presses pennies, & year specific merchandise isn’t on my worst list. But that’s me.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Disney balloons but I've got rules about them - we only purchase one on the first day of a multiday stay and only as we're leaving the park for the day and going back to our resort. Since the balloons can't go on the airplane with us, I encourage my kids to find a child just checking in for their magical stay to give it to.

Absolutely. Assaulted by bubbles. Don't like balloons. I remember taking my daughter for her 1st visit. She loved her balloon. And at the end of the holiday we let it go for the children in heaven. We don't like Mickey ears.pressed pennies. I'm stopping watching the DIS. All they do is moan. Look at the parks through a child's eyes. Ears make your head hurt your a grown man. Again. Children love them. I'm done lol. I have Ben going to Disney with my family For 20 years. I think when it comes to the lighted toys, bubbles and balloons, I think if the parents teach the kids the right way to use them and when to use them they are great! We have been to Disney 4 times in 5 yrs and my son and daughter have gotten a lighted sword or wand every time and they still have them and play with them. During the parades, shows or fireworks, they give them to us to hold. For the balloon, we hold it down in our hands during the shows so that it isn't blocking views, and also if its windy. I think it all really comes down to peoples etiquette on them. Great discussion!

I think the really nice thing about pressed pennies is how varied they are. I've only gone to WDW once so far back in 2014 and that was something I had a lot of fun collecting. I filled one of those pressed penny books from that year and really only 2 or 3 of them are blemished. I have one from each of the lands, most of the rides I did and the collection from the hotel I stayed at. It was a really good way to collect lots of little keepsakes and have fun with it without braking the bank (thought I was a little difficult as we (Canada) had just gotten rid of the penny not to long before my trip so I was actively looking for pennies)

My sister made a charm bracelet out of her pressed pennies and she will still wear it at 65 years old. She & I bought these really unusual Minnie Shirts, still wear them 25 years later! My 35 yr son has saved all his pirate goodies for his kids. Of course we have enough Xmas ornaments to do a dedicated Mickie Mouse tree. Even if they don't keep well, souveniers make happy memories for the child in all of us.

I like and still collect pressed pennies as an adult and they keep very well. I still have Disney pressed pennies from 1997.
Also I havena Tigger inspired Santa hat I bring out during Christmas.
Oh and in my opinion about the year t-shirts, I think it's all about making you purchase a new shirt every visit, because once that year is up, you wouldn't want to wear it out in public anymore. For example, I have a basic Disney shirt with no year on it that I wear all the time, but I wouldn't wear it if it had a previous year on it.

Great show topic! My kids asked for balloons in February and I asked them, "How do you think we'll go on rides with them?" (no stroller) "Do you want a balloon that will be deflated in a few days or something you can take home?" My 8 and 9 year old then easily understood what a waste it would have been. : ) Instead of buying their glow sticks, I whip out dollar store glow sticks from my back pack. We do love the pressed pennies though. Cheap, yet you can keep them in a book and have fun collecting them.

My first trip to Disney land was in 98, I was 5. My favorite film at the time was Mulan, and I got the balloon with her face on it. We drove there from San Francisco, so I remember having it in my room and seeing it slowly deflate and hover several inches from the ground. Then I guess my dad got rid of it.
But yes, thinking back on it, it was kinda sad to watch die.
I’ve been wearing a shirt I got at Disney almost 6 years ago consistently since I got it.
With the pressed penny thing... I mean what else are you going to use pennies for? The distraction idea is a good argument.
The ears are iconic, come on... and for the reoccurring guests, you have that and you’re ready for the next trip.
    Yea, my thoughts. Haha

I have a "karma" balloon story for you. You mentioned about the balloons and how you can't take them on an airplane. I don't know if the airlines are not letting you take them anymore but they were. This has been many years ago. There was one of my many trips to Disney. For the flight home, the airline was full. You are talking a big plane with 6 seats per row. You know that there is limited space in the overhead bins. At least a good half of the parents were bringing these balloons on the plane. They are big and were taking up a LOT of bin space and there were many people that were stuck putting their carryons under the seat because of these balloons! After we took off, you could hear the balloons start popping. It sounded like popcorn! For those of us (me included) that got inconvenienced because of these balloons, it felt like justice.

Two things: No parent wants to buy that junk (spinning glow things, balloons) for their kids, but once you're in the park they see other kids with them. You eventually break down and give in - although we did take some of our own glow items from the dollar store.
I like the pressed penny machines. My mom wanted to get our son a gift before we left and I found a tip that quarters and pennies for the machines. She sent him with a bunch and he was excited to show her all the places we visited when we got back. Will he still care about them in 10 years, likely not but it was special at the time.

Those bubble blowers saved our Disney Vacation a few years ago. My son was thrilled and went from cranky to excited immediately. As a parent, I appreciate them. I do bring my own glow items because I can't see spending the extra money on those, but sometimes it just takes a bubble blower to keep your littles happy and take away the melt downs. Trust me...you'll appreciate the bubbles over a child screaming bloody murder.

Philip Schoen, when we went in 2016, I created an ornament with pics of us in all 4 parks. We love that kind of souviner the best and have some for other trips/events we've done. We get to reminisce every year :)

Agree 100% with Charles on the ears! I’m a recent Florida resident and annual pass holder and I have all of my ears hung up on my wall as decoration as well as ones that I now make. I wear a different pair almost every time I go and it makes that visit that much more memorable.

I started a tradition with Mickey ears. Every time I go I’ll mark the inside of the ears with the reason I went, who I went with, and the date of the trip. Looking at those ears and reading the message evokes so many memories.

For the Wishes show, I stood behind a father carrying his son and his son had a light-up stick toy with a see-through ball at the end to project the light on the floor so that it basically covered a large portion of the ground. Needless to say, the dad was carrying his son and that little boy shined the light directly into my eyes for a good portion of the show. Already had a garbage view since the boy was on his shoulders and now I was being blinded... Thankfully the dad realized and turned it off

My mom has my first pair of Mickey ears from my very first Disney trip when I was just over a year old, kept along with other mementos from my childhood. Baby shoes, scrapbooks, that sort of thing. So like Charles mentioned, you attach a memory to an object and it holds a special meaning. And for many families, their first Disney trip, or maybe their only Disney trip, it is kind of that perfect keepsake. Not something you will get a lot of use out of, but symbolic of that time. As for a grown man, Disney kind of is the only place where you can get away with putting on a silly hat and embracing the fun, so even if you only wear it for your vacation, it serves as a fond reminder of that time, even if it ends up sitting on a shelf or in a box in the garage with other useless mementos. But you'll be going through it someday and see them and smile, and that really is a bit of Disney magic there.

I love the balloons. I get one when we drive. Mine have lasted for about 2 months. It brings joy to me when I look at it. I remember as a kid (over 35 years ago) when I went to our local fair, they had the Mickey shaped balloons and I had always wanted one. My kids favorite thing to do is collect the pressed pennies. We buy the books to put them in. My youngest son likes to look at them and he plays with them all the time.

Since we drive to WDW, the balloons are a great souvenir. We bought it when leaving the park and I have to say that the balloon stayed up on it's own for 3 full months when we got home! It was a great reminder of our trip and kept us talking about it a long time. For reference, our daughter was three then. We also got her Minnie ears and she still wears them at age 5. In fact, since we are heading back to Disney in July, she has started wearing them regularly as she is getting excited about the upcoming trip. She can't wear them at school but she can wear them at afterschool. ;) Love your channels. We used Dreams to book our trip!

when buying souvenirs I really like to focus on the value, which is why I love the pressed pennies. Steve was bang-on when he said they are a great distraction from the more expensive gift shop paraphernalia. my kids are so excited when I say pick which ever penny you want! lol. I did learn the hard way though to only use the newest, shiniest coins . great topic!

A note on ears. I love them, we took a big family trip years ago and my one wish for the day was for our group to have matching ears. An hour, lots of tears and fighting later, half the group had no ears, and the rest were all wearing different ones. Luckily it was the Year Of A Million Dreams, and coming out of our first ride together, there were two cast members handing out special ears, the cloud million dreams ones. It was a really small thing and probably a nothing prize for most people but it was the one thing I wanted that day, for us all to have matching ears and Disney made my dream come true even though they didn't know it.

Mom tip: take photos with the balloons in the background instead of buying them. If your kids are obsessed with the light up stuff at night, just pack some glow sticks from the Dollar Tree! I was always able to distract my kids from those sales carts by bringing my own like you guys suggest. AND my youngest son has a pair of Mickey ears that Mickey autographed and they still have a special place in his room....LOVE THEM! Great show, guys...as always.

People are so rude about the bubbles! We bought my one year old daughter a bubble wand when we went in February because it was her first time at Disney and she was soo excited. Several people would act so annoyed if the bubbles were near them and would make comments and push the bubbles away. If it makes kids happy then I’m all for it!

Diana Lopez, when we went in January some kid jumped in front of my 18 yr old daughter and 'bubbled' her. The parents looked panicked, but when my daughter just laughed and popped them it made the parents smile. We loved the constant 'bubble assult'!!

I grew up 20 minutes from Disneyland, I live 1000 miles way now and my 9 year old has only been to Disneyland twice, we used to be season pass holders. He loved the pennies, that was his favorite thing, he even got the little commemorative holder for all of them. My son is Autistic, finding something for him to enjoy at the theme parks is really difficult, he doesn't like loud noise, he is terrified of most of the rides, but doing the penny squash machines made him really happy. I used to do them when I was a kid and I'm hoping to find some of my old ones to add to his collection.

The 'year' merchandise can be good if you're buying it for a specific reason. Star Tours reopened one week after our son was born, and we intentionally looked for and bought an adult sized Star Tours shirt that has the year on it so that we can give him a special gift when he turns 16. However, if the year doesn't have any specific sentimental value, then you are better off spending your money on something else.
