Wow, we were lucky having this so early for the C64. Really enjoyed your gameplay mate. Paul Norman is the boss in how to create atmospheric and intense gameplay.
Cheers mate I enjoyed playing it, I don't know how I missed this back in the day. Do you get FREEZE64? The Paul Norman interview is really interesting.
The cover art really nails the gameplay here! A Formidable Forbidden Forest indeed, those giant Spiders & Wasps are dangerous foes. Well played buddy nice video.🕷🕹🐝🍀
3:31 That's what she said 😂 You should most definitely continue those Saucy jokesSaucy jokes 😂 Never Played this one, Really like the music and the game looks Really good for an early 80s game
Hehe this was a fun watch! I never realized it is sooo hard on a new player. But now I got deja vu thinking back when I played this as a kid back in the day 😊. I play it on and off every year. This was my recent Halloween pick even!
The enemies are savage in this one mate it looks solid to play with the bow shooting being as slow as it was. can't fault the graphics for the time and the change from day to night was a neat touch 🙂👍
I have never played FORBIDDEN FOREST - nor either BEYOND FORBIDDEN FOREST 😹. Also, you are one retrospective hero, when you know, how to beat the enemies on the Commodore 64 😸😺👍🕹️.
Well this looks fantastic for the time I'd say, must be one of the first horror games ever Shame it's so slow to load the bow and turn, really makes it brutal, if that was quicker it would still be fantastic today, still looks good though, and you did well at the end Amazing it has parallax and changing light conditions. This is a winner👍
@retrotap Do you know that reference? Sometimes I post things that only make me laugh. It was an early 80s fantasy movie. There was a elf character named Crow that was super fast with a bow.
On a technical level, Forbidden Forest and Beyond Forbidden Forest are sublime. They really showed how to do stunning multi-layer parallax scrolling and pseudoscaling without resorting to "tricks" like sprite multiplexing. If it were combined with a more skilled pixel artist, it could have held up with latter day C64 titles. And yet, others really didn't take up the inspiration from Forbidden Forest. There was, AFAIK, only one mediocre clone (Amazon Warrior), and I don't think anyone copied the technical side of it. Why not? It could have been adapted to any number of genres, like a CRPG or a beat 'em up.
That's quite an interesting point - especially given it was a big early hit. Maybe they thought it was all a bit dated, but history has proven that wrong imo.
@@retrotap Maybe I am mixing things up, but the game I remember had a surprising amount of control code in basic and sprite handling etc. in assembler.
I'd definitely stay away mate! The music is pretty amazing for the time in terms of atmosphere but it doesn't measure up to some of the later stuff on the system imo.
Nah that's not for me - I'm documenting my collection and don't have time to get good at them all. That said, I think I'll come back to this one sometime.

It's very atmospheric mate, a very creative game for it's time.
3:31 That's what she said 😂 You should most definitely continue those Saucy jokesSaucy jokes 😂 Never Played this one, Really like the music and the game looks Really good for an early 80s game
Ah cool not going to get cancelled then 😂 Yes mate this is a brilliant game I can see why it's so highly thought of.

Thanks mate. I really enjoyed my first session, it won't be my last 😊
Thank you buddy. Great video 😃😆👍🏹
♥️

Yeah I know what you mean mate I reckon I'd have been real scared by this back in the day.
One the great game I remember from the C64 era. The music was epic !
Yeah it's very atmospheric
I have never played FORBIDDEN FOREST
- nor either BEYOND FORBIDDEN FOREST 😹.
Also, you are one retrospective hero,
when you know, how to beat the enemies on the Commodore 64 😸😺👍🕹️.
Ah thanks mate - I've not played Beyond yet but I would like to. This is definitely one to add to your collection if you can.
Great Game for its time, very advanced compered to most games in 1983, big thumbs up mate👍👍
Cheers buddy totally agree it was ahead of it's time
For its time it sounds and look pretty solid 😊
It's surprisingly cinematic considering the time.
Also the Toad/Frog army kind of reminded of Hunters from Resident Evil....and the Dragon well he didn't mess around at all haha.🐸🔥🐲🕹🍀
He was brutal 🤣
Well this looks fantastic for the time I'd say, must be one of the first horror games ever

Yeah it's a great game mate. I wonder if that reload speed is something I'm doing, might research that a bit. Adds to the strategy though I guess.
Both the graphics and the gameplay are so good for a 1983 home console, I'm amazed.
I agree, it was way ahead of it's time imo
Hawk the Slayer simulator.
🤣
@retrotap Do you know that reference? Sometimes I post things that only make me laugh. It was an early 80s fantasy movie. There was a elf character named Crow that was super fast with a bow.
I did have to Google it, but it looks like a film I should watch some time 😊

Think I've watched my mate 20th century gamer play this, interesting game.
Ah he's a legend I expect he whizzed through it
Thats what she said 😂 i think i would of liked this if i played it back in the day rich buddy, that blood from that spider attack 😮
Brutal isn't it mate 😂 It's a cracking game.
Lol, I had this game.
Lucky 😍😊
That was largely written in Basic if I recall correctly…
In his Freeze interview Paul Norman says it was how he learnt assembly so I think it is all MC
@@retrotap Maybe I am mixing things up, but the game I remember had a surprising amount of control code in basic and sprite handling etc. in assembler.
@MrSoopah ah right so maybe a mix of both?
@@retrotap That's what I believe. Also makes sense in light of the interview remarks you mentioned. In any case, thanks for the memories ;-)
I think the leap frogs were actually hooded ghouls
🙈
Maybe there’s a reason that Forest is forbidden 😂 that music got a bit grating for the first area 😅
I'd definitely stay away mate! The music is pretty amazing for the time in terms of atmosphere but it doesn't measure up to some of the later stuff on the system imo.
You don't have to keep running right.
Yeah I've seen better players stand still and still kill the meanies. I'm still learning 😁
I dunno, maybe figure out how to play the game first, and then make the video?
Nah that's not for me - I'm documenting my collection and don't have time to get good at them all. That said, I think I'll come back to this one sometime.
