- I've never really talked about my colonoscopy and endoscopy story, so here it is in 2018. I have quite several IBS so my GP advised I have these tests done - but not everything went according to plan.
After speaking about my colonoscopy and endoscopy story under sedation, I share my advice for those having the same procedure done. If you are having it done, let me know in the comments if you have any questions. Good luck! x

This is in no way any hate on the UK, but this is the 3rd or 4th video I’ve seen on this from someone in the UK that had the procedure done and could feel it! What in the world are they doing over there that they can’t get their sedations down by now? 😱 You should have in no way been awake for this! That’s like a form of torture! Medicine is more advanced than this, this is just bizarre. Very sorry you had to go through that!
I was completely knocked out for both. I felt nothing I was asleep for both.
I have recently had both done at once with no discomfort or pain at all. Prep is unpleasant but def worth it

I had both and endoscopy and colonoscopy yesterday. I had four Dulcoax the in the afternoon drank my prep. The taste of the prep was not bad. Gatorade lemon lime flavor with the mirilax. Ran to the bathroom about 6-7 times. The procedure was a breeze. I was asleep during the whole thing. Woke up and it was all done. Tired the rest of the day. Nurses took good care of me. Found one polyp, removed it.
For my colonoscopy, I took Suprep which was nasty and bitter. It said to drink it with water, but it was so nasty that i needed to mix it with sprite. It cleaned my system thoroughly 😂 I had my endoscopy at the same time and I was sedated for everything. I'm shocked you were awake for your colonoscopy.
Also, I have Celiac Disease and my hospital had nothing for me to eat. There needs to be more gluten free awareness still to this day
I had an endo-colo as a teenager and am reconsidering doing one again because it's been almost 10 years since and I saw a different GI back then. He'd said my colon was "a little spastic" (hence IBS), I had a small hiatal hernia, and int. hemorrhoids which are now a bit worse. I'm sorry you weren't well-sedated during the colonoscopy; the sedation is key to getting through it easily. At the time I also asked for simethicone for gas and anti-nausea for the anesthesia both to be included in the IV just in case and I think these helped minimize discomfort afterwards**. I know most people get the thick prep drink that's sometimes nauseating. I got this Prepopik powder that I mixed with gatorade throughout and that was kindof tasty, fairly light- felt so cleaned out and light on my feet afterwards! I read somewhere that it's been discontinued but my husband had his just a few months ago and he was given tiny little Dulcolax and then like dissolve-able Miralax tablets we put in gatorade and got through his well too.
Sorry you had such a hard time. I was shocked. I am 70 now and have had 3 colonoscopies and 1 upper endoscopy. I have never had a problem. I had the endoscopy the same time as one of the colonoscopies and they didn’t let me wake up in between. I live in the US and can’t imagine they would do that. If you ever have to do it again, I think you should go some place else. I was horrified to hear your story. Pure torture.
I had both done 2 days ago.Moviprep to me taste like gone off lemon sebert, not oily. I had sedation but was fully awake and alert throughout, which worried them. I felt discomfort with the endoscopy, but felt absolutely nothing with the colonoscopy, even whilst they removed all of my 18 polyps I was looking on the big screen which fascinated me. I found it strange you were not put on your left side to begin with, with each procedure. Thanks for sharing your experience,
Wow. Ive had several gastroscopy and colonoscopy combined procedures over the years. They always put me on my side and do both procedures at the same time. One camera down one end, and the other simultaneously up the other. I have never felt anything. They put the mouth piece in, I go to sleep, and wake up in recovery. They never offer no sedation here. The prep I had for the last few was Picoprep, and its not great, but it has a lemony flavour and is managable. Im in Melbourne, Aus, and Ive had it done both in public and private hospitals, always a similar experience. I am so sorry your experience was so awful.
hi, becky! i remember when you had yours done - i think mine was done the year before. mine were back to back also. sedation is a good thing but it is really uncomfortable for the colonoscopy - they want the sedation to be lighter for the it so they can have you reposition as needed. i need to redo mine in about 5 years as they found benign polyps and but also had the tumor on my kidney. actually, i think mashed potatoes were suggested to me also. afterward they need to monitor blood pressure and heart rate plus they want to make sure your "gut" is working after all the sedation. also to make sure you can go to the bathroom. i know in the future i need to do a 2 day prep as my constipation is pretty severe. another thing i have learned is to really eat soft, easy to digest food the few days before the prep to really give the prep a bit of an easier time. huge hugs to you! ~k

Just had both done yesterday! Was sedated and felt nothing but hunger!!! For BP I had miralax, magnesium citrate and generic dulcolax!
I see my gastroenterologist in one month after being on the FODMAP diet for two months. I go back for my test results and if still nothing then maybe they’ll schedule an endo/colonoscopy because I can’t eat anything without having so much pain and constant diarrhea. 😫so this helps to know and since I get severe panic attacks, I don’t wanna be awake for anything.
Becky I'm so sorry your experience was so awful. I'm happy to say my colonoscopy went much smoother than this with the Moviprep being the worst part. I opted for sedation, much to the visible annoyance of the intake nurse. I think because my procedure was the last one of the day and as you say the recovery time is a little bit longer and you have to be monitored afterwards so I think I was delaying her home time. Having heard your story I'm so glad I stood my ground and insisted on sedation. Thankfully my procedure was only mildly uncomfortable, similiar to period cramps, and I even watched the whole thing on the monitor which was fascinating.
That makes me so happy that my bad experience helped you to decide that and maybe not have a bad experience like I did! Hope the results are positive and help give you some answers too x
I had the same experience and I had mine done in 2005. It was sooo painful that they did not even went to the colon part, only the first part of the bowels! The doctor said afterwards: "Eat lots of fibers, especially dark brown bread, and raw veggies and you'll be fine." I asked if I could eat lactose, gluten etc and she was like "ofcourse, why not?" Luckily things have changed and nowadays they understand that gluten, lactose etc are bad for IBS patients.

I have had two now. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy in the one go, just like you back in 2010. Asked to be drugged up as much as poss. Luckily didn't feel the colonoscopy...the worst part was the endoscopy as can't stand that horrible choking feeling! Just came back that I had some sort of very mild gastritis. Fast forward to 2017 and I had another colonoscopy. Specialist was great as he wanted me to have it done as some of my family have ulcerative colitis and my mum had bowel cancer. This time was way worse for some reason....even though I asked for lots of drugs again 😣 I actually kept crying out and the nurse kept telling me to relax. They noticed that I seemed hyper sensitive to every little movement from what they were doing. They said I was reacting a lot to even the slightest movement from the tube. Felt awful afterwards. Cramps were so bad I couldn't sit up for ages 😣 . The prep I find not painful but obviously you can't go anywhere as you are chained to the toilet!! But yes as you said about possible damage to your bowel....I was worried the 2nd time around that they may have caused some damage with the pain I experienced! The only thing that came out of it was that I have a very sensitive bowel that overreacts to the slightest thing. It's good that I'm all clear for more serious things such as colitis or cancer....but at the same time...frustrating that it still doesn't give me any real answers/resolutions. So I completely feel your pain 're the colonoscopy!!! Xxx
Ugh that sounds awful! I can completely relate because with my coloscopy & endoscopy, they did not use any sedation because in Germany they usually don't do this in the hospital but in separate clinics ( with no one who is specialized in sedation). The pain and air pumping was so painful. What a ridiculous advice you got about the mashed potato.. Hopefully they will change the way they treat and help people with IBS..because just eating some mashed potatoes doesn't fix anything:')
I had both of these done but chose no sedation for the endoscopy... it was hell. I was retching and burping up the air they blew into my body the whole way through! Nurse was wiping my eyes from all of the retching! Same as you on both tests though, all came back clear! Still no answers!
Emily Bossons I was sedated but it hadn't kicked in yet where they did my endoscopy. It is actual hell.
Every time I have this done it is horrible. I refuse to get this done
luckily i don't remember a thing from either ends and i felt great when i started to go back to normal. the worst part by far was the prep. i had to drink 2 small bottles of stuff. the 2nd bottle made me throw up. it was pretty awful. i also felt pretty bad for a week after. couldn't eat much and my stomach was constantly gurgling (from all the air they pumped in me i guess)
I had an endoscopy done a few years back. It was awful. I opted for sedation but it didn't work on my and the tube felt too big for my throat so I was retching and wimpering all throughout. So traumatic. All it showed was mild gastritis.
I also had a similar experience to you with the gluten thing. I was getting some blood tests and noticed one of them was for coeliac so I called up the hospital and asked whether I needed to be eating gluten beforehand as I was gluten free and they said no. Saw the consultant after the tests and when she learnt that I was gluten free, she explained that it was a false result as I needed gluten in my system. What a waste
Doctors don’t tell you details about these procedures because once a person finds out what they are going to,put themselves through they won’t go through with it. The preparation for colonoscopy has slightly changed and you don’t need to drink the two litres of mixture.
I am surprised they did both procedures back to back, that is not normal unless a medical Emergency. Sounds like you weren’t sedated properly. You should not be aware of what is happening and typically they are done when the patient is laying on their side.
My prep makes me drink a gallon of laxatives mixed with water, and I am on a liquid diet for 2 days before, they are going to do mine at the same time

I'm had both done at the same time and doctor explained everything to me...drank some liquid at 11am the day before then drank more 4 hrs before procedure then they put me to sleep. The worst part of the whole thing was a sore butt from wiping
I have my collonoscopy next Wednesday. I am really scared. Been suffering with IBS on and off for few good years now but only now decided to get it checked. I really am scared for both the procedure and the diagnosis.

You should consider having a Virtual Colonoscopy. You will have to probably pay for it out of pocket, but it is not crazy expensive. The prep is the same, but you will not have to be sedated. They basically do the entire thing with a CT scan and take pictures of your entire system. Also they will obviously not be able to remove a blockage or polyps like a normal colonoscopy.
I'm sorry your colonoscopy was so uncomfortable. I was mildly sedated for mine and it was fine. In fact, I remember being somewhat amused by the whole thing throughout. The worst part was the knawing hunger from not eating which actually made me reeling and dizzy.
Honestly, it might also come down to who does the procedure. I had two gastrosocpies. The first was from a doc who had a numbing agent sprayed down my throat and sedation, and I could hardly swallow for a day afterwards. The second was from a lady who made it go smooth as butter and I just had a slight buzz from fentanyl the rest of the day.

Hey again beccy! In Australia they suggest general anacetic (can’t spell sorry) but you are free to have just sadation if you wish. I have had about 3 colonoscopies with andoscopy (both at the same time). I’m not good with needles so they gave me so sedation before I went to sleep. It was thankfully quite a stress free time for all three. The pain could be from the gas they pump into your tummy to get the instruments in to look at your digestive tracts. You release that gas as a big fart lol when you wake up. I had a biopsy done and had blood in my stool (sorry everyone for details) after I woke up and went to the toilet. But the doctor came out and said she removed something for biopsy and not to be concerned. I had the same solution to drink. Three days before the procedure I had to eat white bread type food/no seeds ect for three days. Then 3 pm the day before the procedure I had to take two blue tablets then drink this sour lemon solution. 2 litres. After the “you know what on the toilet” happened I slept then went straight to the place to get looked at. I’m so sorry you had a horrid time. Wish I was more nice for you. Great video! Thanks again and hope your well xxx ps: apparently I was tested and diagnosed with “Medically Diagnosed IBS and lactose intolerance” after my first procedure and biopsy. Also if you have to do the procedure again, use a straw to drink the solution at the back of your throat. Limits the yucky taste. Also before I went to sleep the man said to open my mouth for numbing spray for my throat for the endoscopy and that it would taste bitter.then I said “yuck that tastes terrible....oh....you tricked me....thanks (I said thanks because I was nervous about going to sleep so it was nice of him) :) I’m going to sleep now, bye guys” and all the doctors and nurses smiled and waved and said “bye see you soon” hahahaha
@Thimble Dust Thanks for sharing Im also in Aus, I am having mine done in two weeks im super nervous and scared as I have anxiety I am really hoping they put me under as I have SVT and dont want to have a heart palpitation while in the middle of having it done :(
k petrified about taking the prep now, don't think I'm going to go, I have a phobia of being sick and dont think I can take that. Supposed to be taking it from 4pm ( today, in an hour ) nope, cannot

You could have sued them for having such painful experience. I had colonscopy twice and there was no pain at all. My advice is try to do thourough colonoscopy with a more professional doctor . LOVE YOU :)
I had a colonoscopy 2 months ago, with sedition and it was extremely painful, I was fully with it the whole thing me and it was awful!! I’m having an endoscopy in 2 weeks and I’ll de asking for sedition again but I’m just praying it’ll be a better experience.. I didn’t think the bowel prep was as awful as you found it though. Xx
Watching these kinds of videos will help you ? Ask this question to yourself. Answer is "No". IBS can be cured I had been suffering from this problem for 6 years not but now i have cured myself 100%. you can also get rid of this problem. I prefer doing the same test regardless of how painful, than being bloated and constipated; I just don't know what to eat.

I had bought without any meds and sedation. Colonoscopy then endoscopy.
Sorry that you had to go through that. Sounds like they didn't use enough sedation.
As your title suggests, you should have had your colonoscopy first and then the endoscopy; as the endoscopy is associated with gagging as the endoscope is swallowed only. The colonoscopy involved blowing air into the bowel opening it up for the camera to view the lining, so stitch or cramp like pains just after going for a sprint after a large meal. I am sorry the operator did the endoscopy first. Picolax is a lot more pleasant than Macroprep. So ask for Picolax if you think you will not be able to finish day one's dose, whilst pharmacy is still open during working hours, just in case, so you can carry on with Picolax on Day 2, so you don't need to cancel your colonoscopy and have got it out of the way. Sucking on Entenox as the air is pumped in, repeatedly, during the procedure (as it is short acting - only pain relieving, as you inhale it) if you don't like needles or you've children to look after, so cannot have sedation. Write to your hospital with your experience so they provide a better service for future patients. Slower advance of scope at the bends in the large bowel, possibly, less cramping? Have you tried Low FOD MAP diet? Onion and garlic upset me, so I avoid both. Hope this information helps.
Anaesthetists could be freed up from performing time consuming epidurals for Caesarean sections if every mum new of Aniball or Epi-no Delphine Plus birth facilitating devices shortening the last 2 hours of pushing to 20 minutes, so only the rare mum with serious disease would be requiring C/section. I had the complete opposite happen to me. The sedation hadn't kicked it yet so I felt the entire endoscopy. It felt horrible, I felt like I was being choked and it was super painful. By the time the colonoscopy happened straight after I didn't feel anything, I just remember nodding off to sleep looking at the inside of my bum on the monitor next to me. I even had polyps burnt out. Didn't feel a thing. They also had me lay on my side for both procedures.

I had to drink 1500ml of water w the powder at 7pm the day before AND ANOTHER 1500ml of water w the powder at 4AM the day of the colonoscopy ….
I probably have mild gastroparesis, but I’m having an endoscopy and colonoscopy tomorrow to see if there is some other reason for the problems I’m having. Unlikely, but good to be sure. :)
Trust me, IBS can be cured I had IBS not now i am completely cured with some medications and will power. You can also get rid of this problem. I live in uk, in london. I did my colonoscopy few weeks ago for 2 time in general anesthesia, because the first time i was in too much pain. Also medications were different..... interesting
What did they see? I suspect I have IBS but not sure if the regular one or IBS-M

I had the endoscopy when I was like 14/15. Might have been younger than that. I’m 36 now. But I remember it very well. The worst procedure of my life. Practically had the tube forced down my throat. I was quite upset from it. Nowadays I can’t swallow tablets. So I think that comes from that experience. X

What symptoms do you have with ibs, I've had the normal ibs symptoms for years now. However last 6 weeks have been feeling sick on and off all day. Having a endoscopy on feb 7th 😬

See that's why I told them to knock me the hell out. Yikes! I had mine in 2014. I didn't eat gluten before it and I feel like it gave a false negative result.
You drank the prep all wrong! I took it like a power hour of drink (without the alcohol).

That sounds horrible :( I don't think they treated you very well or did it properly, especially as you had to do all that prep before.

Yikes your colonoscopy sounds horrendous. I've had 3 endoscopies in the past 8 years due to coeliac complications and agree you should always go with sedation. Not the throat spray they now also offer. I've also had 2 camera gastroscopies where you swallow a camera and it spends 12 hours passing through your system. I had to drink moviprep for that and its awful horrible disgusting stuff. You can't eat for 24 hours before the procedure, then get completely cleaned out with the moviprep and then can't eat or drink for over 12 hours the following day too, as the camera has to have a clear view as it goes through your system. I actually fainted at the hospital last time as my blood sugar went so low. They ended up making me drink huge amounts of orange squash to get it back up. Isn't it fun being poked and prodded so much. I sometimes feel like my own science experiment.
