I guess a story that makes you feel so much attachment to fictional characters you've met for 40 minutes might be a good story after all. Also, look at the positive side, after you manage to pass through the dark moments from FMA 2003, then FMAB dark moments will feel way lighter by comparison.

I don't think anything is so dark as this. Even SAW lost to it cause it doesn't involve children.
This episode is why i recommend to watch FMA before FMAB. Soul Tucker and Nina story are even more darker in this one.
