Cadian Upgrade Kit Review-Is it worth it?

With the release of the new Cadian Upgrade kit sent to me by @officialwarhammer, I wanted to see what models could be made, upgraded or whether the kit was worth getting for people investing in the new Cadian force! I loved the previous Black Templar upgrade kit and I expect to see more kits like this coming out in the future, so are they all worth it? Would love to know your thoughts after the video!

The cadian upgrade sprue allows you to make a cadian themed veteran guardsman kill team with all the specialists, if you don't like the krieg kit. Surprised they don't mention that more.

@@MediocreHobbies I saw it on reddit. But actually after doublechecking, it's not quite all, you need a spare bolter and long-las for the confident and the sniper. But between the upgrade and base cadian kit, you can represent almost all of the options (or just use drum autogun and scoped lasgun)

Yeah, if I wasn’t into the Krieg look I’d be using the new Shocktroopers and this upgrade sprue for a Cadian Vet Guard team
In my experience Imperial Guard really benefits from having a few more eyecatching lads dotted in among the regular infantrymen and I think this is where this kit would really come in handy.
If you get one of these for every handful of regular squads to work in some personalities here and there, mix up some different poses for HWT teams and field ordanance crews and distinct officers you can really keep a army from becoming a big tide of samey green, especially if you get a bit creative with the bits.
It is arguably more aimed toward people like me who aspires for large and infantry heavy armies than someone who want a smaller, more neatly themed army.
Yes I agree. And I’m like you, so so many infantry. So this is a great box for me.
I think the respirator helmets would look great as head swaps on the Rough Riders

Love your breakdown. One note on this kit. Those extra body's added to a cadian shock squad and mixed with a heavy weapon team and extra 50mm bases would allow the build of a heavy team propper, a heavy team in the cadians squad and an extra heavy team. Per 3 shock squads and a single heavy team box and three upgrade kits you could potentially build 9 heavy teams instead of 3

As someone who likes having a lot of diffrent head options I'm a bit excited for this one, I can see the downside to this definitely but I think there is some good in this, I'm also a fan of the Map reader, I can see him jokingly placed in so many random armies as if he got lost trying to find his squad.
I'll agree Upgrade seems like a stretch maybe accessory or add-on would have been a better name for the box

What do you mean by "Rogal Dorn tank commander"? Is the turret hatch ring different size for that tank, compared to all the other Imperial Guard tanks?
I honestly don’t know. I just know what the instructions said. But I’m sure he could go in a normal Russ I just wanted an excuse for more dorn tanks.
I used the cadian upgrade to convert my rough riders haha - I liked the idea of the rough riders having the gas masks since they're riding into all my artillery fire I need to keep them healthy!

Used a gift voucher to pick up the Cadian upgrade sprue, so much of it has found it's way into two kill team builds for Veteran Guard and Kasrkins. Great stuff.

I really like the look of this kit. For an army like guard having extra poses and bits is fantastic as squads will start to look very same-y after a few boxes. It wasn't as much of a problem with the old cadians as they were fairly light on detail but these newer kits are often posed so uniquely or have such visually distinctive gear that it becomes really easy to spot duplicate models. Death Guard are a good example of this too. Glancing at any collection of death guard models will inevitably turn up 3-4 of the "lab coat poxwalker" or plague marine with antlers, which for me often messes with immersion. Parts like the medic I think are brilliant because many people will want multiple command squads in their force, and having to use the same medic every time isn't ideal. That's why I quite like how the Krieg kit has 2 medic options. I'm a big fan of making command squads out of regular infantry boxes so if I was collecting cadians this would be brilliant.
You are correct and army that has that many squads it is for sure good to get all the extra poses. I love the kit.
I would love upgrade kits for other units, like the blade guard, maybe with more ornate helmets and weapons, maybe even axes. Also I would love an upgrade sprue with just heads on it, 10 bare 10 helmeted, with more ornate helmets for captains and honour guard, or their equal in other factions, and a non chapter specific upgrade sprue for marines. Imagine a Chaos Marine sprue that has new heads and helmets for champions, new hands and weapons that can change the poses, maybe weapons that attach to the hand so you can mix and match different weapons with different arm positions, rather then having the weapon already attached to the arm. Oh and an Ork boys sprue, because man does that kit need more options.
Ork Boyz need a proper Multi-part kit. The fact they are pushfit tells me they were probably intended for some kind of mid-edition boxed set, like Shadowspear last edition.
There's only so much they can do with a kit like that. The AOS Chaos Knights are probably the first pushfit kit I've ever seen with an upgrade sprue, but it only includes options for 3 of the 5 models in the original kit.

I've gotten the upgrade set for the cadians just to doodle around with the new shock troops.
You know, kinda getting to create some characters for let's say a kill team. But i do see the point for being a luxury on a set that has already a lot of options on its own.
Yes! I think for converting to a kill team, it’s a great set for making specialists. It was just a weird one to bring out (first, if we’re getting a series?) when we just got all new models
A question about the "sargent" bits included, the belt fed autogun. Is this meant to be a different weapon option than the drum fed autogun? Does it have differing stats? or does it just counts as drum?
Nope. Same weapon.

Yes it is! So many options and endless combos!
it's okay. I'm only interested in the belt-fed machine gun and the grave marker. But I would not by the upgrade just for that. and with the upcoming price raise it's even less interesting to purchase

I love it, two spare guardsmen from it will allow me to use spare parts from heavy weapons teams to practically get another squad of them for "free"
I also think it helps me with having certain squads stand out in addition to the kitbashing opportunities

The medic bits we're included to make a cadian version of the veteran guardsman killteam i believe.
I’ve had a few people say that but there isn’t enough parts to do it. Like a sniper rifle for instance.

love some of the arm pose like the one holding his auto gun up reminds me of rambo but the heads with respirators, think want to use them for my guardsman or the rough riders.

I think the Cadian upgrade kit would be alright for someone wanting to make a Cadian Veteran Guard Kill Team. It's not like they have to be Krieg... They just don't really get any benefit in 40k.

Little question:
The tank commander fits only on the Rogal Dorn Tank? So he can't be put on the Leman Russ tank?
I have checked but I think he would fit ok.
On one hand- I love making every figure I assemble look unique.
On the other hand- $30 for about $1 worth of plastic. The GW Way.
It’s really not that easy. It did not cost gw 1 doller to make this. But I understand your frustration.
@@MediocreHobbies I obsessed on getting it. Finally found a LGS with it and held it in my hand and stared at it for awhile. Ended up putting it back on the shelf. Especially when I occurred to me that to buy this, I also have to buy ANOTHER cadian squad. So - close to $100.

I find some of the poses and the axe and wrench really cool, but other than that I would call it "MEH". Would very much prefer if those fun arms were on the regular sprue and drop the rest

Two comments
1. Your audio is crisp in this video, and I like your editing cuts with the body and full models. Nice touch there.
2. The idea of an upgrade/accessory kit is super gross to me, and feels like predatory design practice. With the size of the sprue, this is something that could have easily been included with the ten man squad box, especially with current pricing structure. Especially with the way Stargrave and other kits are packed, this rubs me the wrong way.
Yeah, it's not like they haven't demonstrated a capacity for moulds with 3 regular infantry squad sprues before. Even if they felt there wasn't enough stuff to fill a 3rd sprue... they could have just spread out the stuff from the other two some more.
It's not like the Black Templars where they would then have to give you 6 sprues in the box because they have to give you a duplicate set.

Would these sprues work with the Vet Guard/Death Korps of Krieg kit?
Yes they would work very well, and might be the intention?
Maybe "accessory kit" is a better name? I like the bits, especially if I decide to make a very expensive kill team of them.

Let's you make a squad with respirators and a medic, which you could use on the table as Death Korps, if you want to use that unit but want an entirely Cadian force

The BT upgrade kit is trash valie compared to their BT Chapter Upgrade kit from back in the day.
Hahaha there two very different kits. And the old one is just no use now. So out of date and ugly.
@MediocreHobbies Perhaps different kits, but one can nevertheless compare their value as they were both manufactured for the same purpose. I also disagree with your opinion on their current utility. The BT Chap. Upgrade kit was so prolific, I'm still using left over intense burners and torches on my current (primaris) BT force. People always ask where they're from.
