To be fair to Karl Marx, he is in that quote simply describing (accurately!) a current status quo under capitalism that he does not agree with. Marx envisioned a future Utopia of a society without money. He is not saying that he believes that materialism is the natural and inevitable nature of Man. It is the inevitable nature of capitalism.
