Indian Railways in the steam age: loco sheds Saharanpur and Moradabad
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 сен 2024
- Maintenance of steam locomotives required a large number of staff. Around 1000 people worked at each of the large sheds, not including the drivers and firemen. With the introduction of diesel locomotives many employees lost their jobs. The video scenes were taken at Moradabad (roundhouse, turntable) and Saharanpur (engine yard, coaling facility) in 1994, the last-but-one year of working broad gauge steam.
Working hard and hard workers, paved way for the present day development in the railway.
From Srilanka
My grandfather started from Moradabad as Fireman for these locomotives and then moved to Saharanpur. Sweet childhood memories I have.
Which village are you from
@@peeyush6169 I have my maternal ancestors from Moradabad.
My paternal grandfather worked in the Chhitaranjan Locomotive Works as a worker.... While my maternal grandfather also worked in CLW but as an engineer.
Both worked in manufacturing of the electric locos.
While my mother's grandfather was a steam loco pilot
Big railway connection....
Tell me more dear small small details
@@globalgroup32 He resided close to railway station and was inspired to be a Loco pilot. In his childhood he used to draw these locos on sand.
He joined young and later graduated from Fireman to Loco pilot of freight trains and then passenger.

Wow. Steam powered cranes too.
Mechanical engineering in those days was awesome.
That looks like diesel

I am a retired railway employee of SC Rly. I worked with steam engines. Sweet memories of my early days of service.
You Sir are one of the people who shaped the future of India in it’s formative years.
In those days the camera clarity was superb....(this camera clarity is far better than my present phone camera clarity)😂😂😋😋
Film cameras have way better quality than even some of the modern digital ones . Many of the old moves that has survived in negative films can be transformed to 4k or even 8k video with proper work. Although it will take like a month to transform a 2hr film to 8k film.

It brings my childhood memory. We used to travel by howrah madras. Mail from kharagpur. Upto 1967 we travelled by steam locomotive only 12 coaches used to be there 3 types class. 1 2 and 3rd class First time rly introduced 17 coaches. With diesel engine Though we had so. Much dust and our eyes used to. Have coal dust whenever we peep through windows still it was golden days because of less population travel was very comfortable
Thank you for this clip. Feels like I am looking at Indian history in real time. Thanks again mate.
Love the old days happy memories 😊
The working Conditions were so bad ...these workers were prone to severe respiratory problems...Electric Locos r best
No they are the best
The working condition was good
@@nasirshaikh7242 Breathing coal dust is terrible. It kills you. Read about black lung disease.
1:42 - that's a decent steam-engine! 😉
Steam locomotives were the most open locomotives. Only boiler was hidden other than that one could see piston, steam, big wheels, hear the magic sound in the silence of night or day and people would know a train is passing by. In short they were magnets attracting people.
This video footage itself is very old from 1994-1995.
Steam locomotive trains no longer remain in India except the rare heritage and tourists trains! Steam locomotives were in decline from late 70,s itself in India.
Major cities had shunned steam by then. Only small towns and branch lines operated them.
Steam broad gauge main line officially ended in 1995 in India but it was more of the few sporadic services which were remaining. Metre Gauge Steam I believe ended in the year 2000.
@@sumitparchani5612 footage could be older too. As by 1994 - 99% of steam locomotive mainline trains in India were gone.
This must be 70's......definitely not 90's.
@@satyavega possible as by 80,s itself there were no steam locomotive trains in major cities of India except the very few sporadic services remaining for the branch lines of towns and villages and few metre gauge services. Mainline steam trains majorly declined from the 70,s onwards as diesel and electric locomotives took over.
The decline of steam on started in the early 70s as the last steam locomotive was manufactured in India in 1972; only diesel or electric thereafter.
I used to travel from Lucknow to Ara (Bihar) via Indian railways hauled by steam locomotives in 1994-95
Just speechless!!!!!
Steam Locomotives are my first love! ❤️
As an Indian model railroader, it's my dream to run "Mashal" and "Azad" models on my model railroad layout.
I'm making these two in 1:87 scale.........
Hope, very soon these two will run through my model railroad..... 😍
Hi, how is your model railway coming along? I’m planning to build a model of EIR from early 1900s.
@@alexwild1435 it's going on.... And waiting to see your upcoming layout 😀
@@HOTRAINUNIVERSEANDDIORAMAS I haven’t started it yet, still planning. I want to run Fairy Queen but can’t find a suitable loco to convert.
Wow blessed to see those steam locomotives, thanks for showing us those coal fired steam locomotives 😍👌🏼
In1990 l was a dravir of such steam loco and steam crane also at BURN STANDARD CO BURNPUR W.BENGAL
Brilliant scenes you captured. I especially like the working steam cranes transporting the coal for the loco tenders.
Yes. Indian history glimpses.
Mashaal, akbar jaise steam engines ko dekh ke dar lag jata tha. Aaj bhi 1994 ka wo din yaad hain jab rudki ke paas maine masoori express ko mashaal jaise engine se pull karte huain dekha tha. Main nangaldam passenger se jab Punjab jaata tha to jaise hee train station par aati to toofan sa aa jata tha. Steam hee steam ho jaati sab jagah. Kaya din they wo. Aaj Nangaldam passenger Himachal express hain. Jab naya naya Diesel engine lagna shuru hua to bada khush hua ki ab hum jaldi pohancha karenge. Time tab bhi 8 ghante lagte they or aaj bhi almost utna he time lagta hain. But steam engine ko dekhte hee ab bachpan yaad aa jata hain. What a time it was.

You gotta be kidding me 😳
The weight of the locomotive lays centred in middle, so that a single person can move the turn table

WP class locomotives - interesting how these were built by a variety of manufacturers from North America and Europe. Thirty of them were built at Fablok Chrzanów, Poland. WP 3024 was the 5000th locomotive assembled since the factory's inception. Sadly, Fablok as a locomotive builder is all gone now.
glorious good all days of steam indian railways missig those charm
Hard working people. I can remember my childhood golden days
every worker needed mask against toxic coal dust
Loved it, loved it. Thank you Fern Bahn.
Old memorable days with my father ❤️
Steam loco engines were so fast and so attractive in that era of time
Hamre ghar ke top floor se railway line dikhti thi jab train wahan se nikalti thi , ham bache bhaag kar uper wale floor per pahunch jaate thy , aap ne bachpan ke yaadin taza kar di thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😊😊
Being Mechanical Engineer, l really miss this Iron horse/ Big brother Steam Locomotive.
It is highly pollutant.
However, the reciprocating Piston - Crank with Chugging sound with Majestic head light & unique honk are very special to watch.
Indian Railways can design CNG boiler for Steam Locomotive to avoid pollution & use Steam Locomotive for houling Tourist trains.
Electric back up van can be used for coaches light/AC purposes
CNG is clean fuel.
We can not see black Smoke but we can enjoy the Steam Locomotive ride.
Nice yaar ... Good working
Yes, maine kisi ko pooch tha woh keh the hai 94 bahuth accha year tha. Aur mujhe bhi accha lagtha hai wus saal. Bahuth saare enjoy kiya tha 1994 mere freedom year hai. Keval mujhe nai saare kehthe hai woh really nice year

This amazing capture Indian steam engine Thanks for sharing this video 👍
Wow those were the days 👍 great Video 🙏 these were hardworking people. They must have suffered from lungs problems.
Incredible! What a world we live in!
Thanks... rare footage
Polluted but we liked that era of trains with coal run engines
Saharanpur shed had closed within a few years of this video. Finally a few WGs were being used on the local slow trains.
Wait in 1994 india still uses steam power ?!
*AWESOME*
By 1980 or so most of the steam train locomotives were stopped in India but few services remained. Officially speaking all scheduled steam locomotive trains of broad gauge ended in 1995 and metre gauge in 2000 in India
Now only the heritage and few tourist steam locomotive trains remain in India.
In UK Germany USA though steam locomotive trains remain in plentiful. Even in Russia and China has a lot of industrial steam locomotive trains working in the mine quarries.
UK has even mainline steam locomotive trains plying almost daily somewhere in their country.
@@CyrusInIndia wow awesome info man 👍
@@indrajitprayogo14 thanks. I've never sat in a steam locomotive train in India but have travelled in steam locomotive trains quite a bit in UK when I was there. It's just a different feeling altogether, and If you see their locomotives you'd probably think they're brand new, that's how well maintained they are.
@@indrajitprayogo14 Great slice of history and the video of steam powered crane is also very special.
@@CyrusInIndia In the 90s, BG steam sheds were at Bhusaval- closed in dec. '93, Rewari- closed in dec. 1993, Moradabad- closed in dec. '94, jalandhar- closed in 1996, Laksar- closed in 1995 and Saharanpur closed in 1996. Asansol, Dhanbad, Rampurhat, Sahibganj, jhajha and Sitarampur (all in Eastern Railway zones) were also active till mid 90s. Among all the above, Only Rewari steam shed has been revived as heritage steam shed, Asansol Shed has now become a fully electric loco shed.

बहोत बढ़िया है! 👍🆗
1:06 Everything is changed but Hashmi dawakhana still on the walls .
At point 50 it is incredible a thin man alone to move a locomotive of tens of tons ..
Because the weight lays on the middle point, that's why turn table can be moved by a single man.
@@arunabhapaul8656sure yes, visual effect is not bad ....
@@sfenodonte visual effect?
I wonder why steam engines have been shunned? The problem was with coal not the steam part. So why not replace the coal with a clean fuel and use steam. The benefits of steam in a large locomotive is the power and tractive effort which is unmatched even by the most powerful electric locomotives.
Nostalgia 😍
Very 2 thanks to post this video

Can you please tell me how many coaches could a broad gauge steam locomotive pull?
I have travelled many times during my younger days but don't recollect paying attention to such details.
In the last days of steam the locos hauled 5 to 10 coaches. In older times when the engines were in better shape they moved up to 20 coaches over lines with no sever gradients. Similar to modern times, albeit much slower.
Broad gauge locomotives can pull upto 1200 tonnes of weight .In old days broad gauge coaches weigh 48 tonnes each. Whereas, metre gauge locomotives can pull 700 tonnes of weight , MG coaches are maximum 36 tonnes in weight. I hope you get answer
