My only real complaint is that the visuals in the remake seem a bit... stiff and lifeless, but I'm sure that's something that'll be worked on and improved, since this is a VERY early build.
Kinda. Basically, Sonic team was planning on putting Sonic 06 on all three consoles of that generation, until they learned that the Wii was going to be significantly less powerful than the Xbox 360 and P33. This left them with two options: make a downgraded port, or make a new game for the Wii. They went with the latter, separating the 06 team in half to do it. That new game for the Wii became Secret Rings.
It was essentially meant to be a substitute for 06 on lesser consoles, sometimes companies will do a somewhat different game under the same name for the lesser hardware(unleashed wii, colors ds, gens 3ds) other times they will make an entirely different game for the SD crowd(secret rings for 06, colors for generations, rush for shadow)
It probably would’ve come to fruition too if they didn’t have a nonstop pipeline with pouring resources into Sonic Heroes, Shadow, Riders, and 06 back-to-back with no breaks on top of holding themselves to an arbitrary deadline they set in a deal with Microsoft to have the game ready for the 360 ASAP, on top of all that Yuji Naka drama. In a perfect world SEGA wouldn’t have rushed ST, would’ve given them a grander budget, and 06 would not only be properly optimized & play tested but a potentially slightly watered down version would be on the Wii.
I hate that they changed Sonic’s homing attack to the spinball. In Secret Rings he is specifically punching his enemies with Shara’s ring because of the context of the narrative.
At this point Sega will just let fans remake all the games for modern PC because they either don't want to do it and/or deal with backlash if they screw up
Even though this project is in its early stages, the lighting looks questionable. Sonic looks so bright compared to the environments which this isn't an issue on the Wii version.
It's odd because I remember, when I first got this game, the motion controls being really unresponsive and it made playing it frustrating. But then, I took off the plastic cover of my Wii remote and suddenly, the game was MUCH MORE responsive and not NEARLY as much of a chore to play as it was before. I've been playing Wii games without the plastic cover ever since.
I would honestly rather just bind my controller to original Secret Rings in Dolphin. It has a more grounded art direction which i think works for the story games, it is way faster than what's shown in the fan remake demo, and has much more exaggerated and animated, well, animations than the demo (also the demo makes it look impossible for sonic to stay in one place of the screen for more than 1 second which isn't cool)
Art direction is better in the original, I believe this is due largely to shadows and lack of some lighting effects in the remake demo Gameplay looks to be a bit faster speed wise: While the remake falls behind at the start of the comparison it pulled really far ahead the moment jumping and the homing attack got involved, with Sonic reaching the ramp about 8-9 seconds ahead in the remake than in the original game. It looks like Sonic accelerates a lot faster in the remake than in the original. Animations I think are actually better in the remake. One thing with animating Sonic that you have to keep in mind is that it takes a lot of effort for him to accelerate, but once he's going fast he can maintain it easily. The original forgot about the latter part, resulting in two things: Sonic looks like he is having trouble maintaining his speed and there's so much movement that at higher speeds Sonic's movement becomes unreadable, especially at 30fps. This was also an issue in SA2 even with that running at 60fps. The remake appears to have adapted the jog and run cycles from Unleashed, which makes sense to me as SA1 and Unleashed are the games that did the best job at applying the principles used in the Mega Drive games to 3D animations. I feel like having the running animation play at higher speeds would help a lot, particularly with boost panels where it feels like Sonic isn't actually getting affected at all. Having the boost run cycle from Unleashed implemented as a higher speed run cycle would also help make Sonic feel more alive
Hot take but I actually really love the 06 models, the lankiness reminds me a lot of Uekawa's sonic art and I appreciate that. Silver especially looked so cool, especially compared to his stubbier rounder models these days.
Hot cake and I don’t know how hot it is but sonic and the secret rings would’ve been an amazing game if it wasn’t for the fact that it was motion controlled if this came out for the Xbox and PlayStation and just had a normal controller I would replay it at least 10 times. it had great concepts and interesting story and possibly the best boost mechanic in my opinion in sonic
All they need to do now is fix the order of levels you can play, the cutscenes can unlock in any order so the story can jump from A to C and back to B again like in Shadow the Hedgehog if you pla the wrong level in the wrong order. They fix this and it'll be golden.
This game is so janky but it has a charm to it that I love, making it a top 10 sonic game for me. Ive always got hate for loving this game but when I was 7 I loved the motion controls personally and it felt futuristic as hell
I could see this as a Sonic game where he could be driven like a car, having the triggers to making him move forward or backwards while being able to switch lanes with the analogue stick rather than guessing where he might go with the analogue stick in the auto run sections would be a cool option to see. Although it could lessen being active in the game
Gonna have to disagree with secret rings being worse than 06. Sure, the motion controls aren’t very intuitive, and can be quite annoying and finicky. But at least the game actually functions like it’s supposed to and isn’t riddled with game breaking bugs.
@@ethanwayne6973 And? Regardless of anyone’s feelings towards secret rings, you can’t honestly believe that a broken rush job of a game is better than a finished game that functions like it’s supposed to.

I'm not a fan of this series but I did play my fair share of this series, and my problem with this remake is that it may end up being sonic forces with a different coat of paint.the levels were all basically built similar to forces for the sole reason that they would be on rails, take the rails away and give control to the player in full and it becomes lost valley before lost valley existed.
I like the running animations more in the Wii version because reignition makes sonic look slower than he actually is and in reigintion there are a lack of shadows.
I don't enjoy talking down on games and seldom quit them. But Sonic and the Secret Rings genuinely was a miserable experience for me. I'm very open towards various controls that games offer, fixed cameras with tank controls, 3d or 2d movement, railway shooters, and motion controls, I've played a vast style. Secret Ring's movement and playstyle just wasn't it, I've put at least 15 hours in the game and got pretty far before calling it. Just looked up a summary and watched the end fight.
Is the level system coming back, cause he looked pretty slow compared to a high level Sonic in the original. If it isn't, they should probably speed him up a bit.
Am I the only one who didn't have troubles with the motion controls? Like Sonic always did when I wanted to and I'm saying this as a person who replayed the game in 2023.
