Today I am showing you how to make my Mama’s Southern Shrimp Salad. Here in the south, we love our seafood. It’s a very simple salad, the heavy lifting, of course is done by the shrimp and old bay seasoning. It has very few ingredients lemon zest, mayonnaise, celery, old bay and shrimp. I normally do add dill but for some reason I couldn’t get any at the store, so if you want, you can add a couple tablespoons of dill if you like.

My father was from.the Netherlands. My mother's family was in America since the 1700's. What a great amalgam for food and tradition. My mom cooked all those classic, what I have since discovered are "southern" dishes. Love your channel and your recipes. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, do you add the shrimp frozen to the simmering water? Thanks for a lovely recipe!
Yes or you can wait until they are thawed. Though I just put them into the simmering water frozen. When they start to turn pink, take them immediately out of the simmering old bay water. There will be a little carryover cooking. That’s why I take them out just as they are turning pink. I don’t rinse them off. I just put them to the side in the bowl as you saw in the video until I was ready to work with them. You could if you wanted, put them in a bowl in the freezer to immediately stop the cooking. I feel bad for people who have to depend on buying imported frozen shrimp because they don’t have access to fresh American shrimp--especially fresh Gulf shrimp--the difference in taste is amazing, plus the shells and heads make fantastic stock for gumbo, étouffée, etc. On the Gulf Coast we are fortunate to have access to fresh seafood--including shrimp--year round, so we’re spoiled.
(I can’t wait to try your pineapple curd and your coffee cake. Growing up we always had coffee cake, and your recipe sounds really good!!!)
A lot people just can’t afford fresh shrimp these days even if they live close to the ocean. I would love if we could afford fresh shrimp but these frozen shrimp are very delicious non the less. Thank y’all for watching and for commenting we are so very grateful. Please be blessed.
