I remembered when D.O.C was Doc Tre from the Fila Fresh Crew in Dallas and we used to to meet up at different spots like Shamrock skating ( In Lancaster) End zone (In Oak Cliff), Stars(In the Grove), and other places throughout the city to hear different crews battle rap. D.O.C was a few years older than me and we didn't have too many rapper being on the radio except for crews like Nemesis and Ron C being played but when I heard "Dunk the Funk" and "I hate to go to work". I started writing myself. Salute to all the rapper from Dallas that never got to spot light yourselves but we pay homage to D.O.C!

The DOC's album, DJ Yella deserves some credit as well in the production of this album, was the freshest album to drop from the west coast at the time in 1989. It showed that the west coast had dope lyricists that weren't just so called gangsta rappers like NWA, Ice T, Too Short, but true MC's like the east coast was presenting in the likes of Rakim, LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, KRS ONE, Chuck D and so forth. The DOC's album along with Above The Law's 1990 February released album: Livin' Like Hustlers (which brought G Funk to the game) were two of the dopest albums of their era and were both basically recorded in 1989. The albums also had very little cussing/nwords/bwords - just dope lyrics and dope beats with a conscious twist in many of the songs.

    • @IceManLikeGervin

Those two albums, two of my favorites of all time, showed that the westcoast was more than gangsta rap (NWA/Ice T/Too Short) because both of those albums were very different. The DOC's album had dope beats while showcasing his lyrical ability, style and flow which no westcoast or eastcoast artist was on at the time. The DOC as he said was the "freshest of the freshest". ATL's debut album introduced G-Funk to the genre and was full of dope beats, dope lyrics, conscious lyrics, with a street edge to it. Also, there wasn't a lot of cussing or nwords, bwords or either album.

@@JeramieTate Ice Cube, Ice T and Tupac are the top west coast MCs.
