That was incredible driving, very impressive. And for all who say he sucks, think about it this way:the track is half gravel, half tarmac,he's wrestling with 910 horsepower without any driving assists and the car is also long so it's not easy to keep it steady. This is not a video game, but reality. And Loeb had it easier because he drove on asphalt when he broke the record.Besides, this is more exciting to watch than Loeb's run.
I have to say this is one of the best footage's and POV video I've watched, I'll agree with some of the others who stated that Pike's Peak should've remained a semi-dirt course. I just came here from watching a sub 8-second run from a VW IDR, which basically sounded like a toy car. Don't get me wrong, it's screamingly fast! There is just much more pleasure watching a driver fight with the dirt and throwing his car into a controlled drift around the numerous technical corners. BIG KUDOS to Tajima and his team for their accomplishments on this course!
this car was not in the gt2 mano anymore this and nothing less than the Shield version but new mano that's why the class talks about it, for me the best car in the world
If everyone thinks he sucks, ask yourselves why. If he was so bad he wouldn't have even been in these cars year after year for decades, let alone winning regularly. As for people comparing this run to loebs run remember loebs run was all asphalt unlike this. Loeb had a car with a few years more development, his tyres weren't a compromise between gravel and slicks. He is much younger so he will be fitter and is possibly one of the best drivers in history. Yet this old man who sucks can still do a run to match.
I think highly of Tajima, so I won't put him down at all, but Loeb's car was sort of thrown together. The only development was the chassis and some development to the engine. All the other parts were cobbled together from various Peugeot race cars from their past efforts in WRC and LeMans (including the engine) because the team only had 6 months to make the car. It's a Frankenstein, basically, so it didn't have years more development
Antony Collingwood While i agree, this guy certainly does not suck and only idiots would say otherwise. However I think most of what you said what nonsense buddy. You sound like a 6year old
DAGATHire wow, 6 years old, normally I'm told I sound like an old man. I could understand how people don't agree with me (that's a regularity) but sounding like a 6 year old. I understand that bit. Technology does get more advanced year on year does it not? Even if Peugeot rushed it, the odds are it would be a superior design for the job it must do. Also tyres improve as we learn more. If you read up on motorsport or have grown up in and surrounded by it as I have you may see perhaps I'm not so childish as I may seem. But stranger things have happened.
Antony Collingwood I question your motorsport background story. Because people in motorsport don't give a toss about that idiots on youtube say let alone would they be bothered to take the time to make comments in reply to those idiots. , yet here you are telling us you have a motorsport background. Frankly i don't believe you. But lets agree to disagree shall we? I mean, we do agree fundamentally that the driver here is no a bad driver. So lets leave it at that. Im not interested in a fantasy story abut your amazing career in motorsport.
DAGATHire I'm not saying that I have a career in motorsport (I'm a sheet metal worker) my grandad used to do car trials in a mini cooper his brother used to rally for years and my dad races with the 750 motorclub, we have almost finished the third car we have built. Also I used to have a vauxhall chevette rally car. As a child I used to help out on and off making extended wheel arches at prepfab motorsport engineering, before they moved to France. Prepfab have built cars for big names such as Jimmy mcrae. Anyway I do agree we should agree to disagree as this is a daft argument.
In my opinion by completely paving Pikes Peak they have turned the most "unique" hill climb course in the world into "just" another tarmac hill climb......
it's safer, it's also easier to set up cars for it this way since you don't have to set it up to handle both gravel and tarmac and people will be faster and that's the endgame go fast, easy to talk shit when you're not the one working hours on end on the cars or risking your life driving them
I have something to say. The reason why pikes peak was painted because of erosion. The road would have been crumbly and about to break. Then there would be no roads. So would you have a pikes peak hillclimb or no pikes peak at all???
Let me clear something out. Loeb, one of the best wrc ever, did this pike peak on asphalt. Tajima did it on half dirt half asphalt. How did you guys ever compare those 2 runs ? Its like comparing Lewis Hamilton againts Loeb on a dirt track ..... Yes the Monster Sport Sx4 have more power then loebs peugeot, it needs it, they do it on different kind of track. Yes Loeb would probably do better then Tajima for the only reason that his younger and only want to push push push and push.
Exactly the same point I thought of. This is just 2 fantastic runs driven on 2 different "Tracks" if u will... To compare it at all is a waste of time hehe
watching in 1080 bud. thx vm 4 this vid. That is pure adrenaline madness. Best p.p. vid i've seen thus far. Thx vm for posting. I would kill to simply ride along let alone drive that car.
My ears are popping just from looking at it. This was a blast to watch. However, I would prefer it to have fewer camera changes. Don't get me wrong, it's great seeing it from all of the perspectives, but changing views every couple of seconds was a little bit annoying some of the times.
It was a spectacular performance. I just think the race was so much better when it was all dirt and there were no guard rails. That's when the Unser family dominated it, having learned to drive on empty dirt roads in New Mexico.
Maybe the record for oldest person to set a record in Pikes Peak will stay with Tajima forever, i can't imagine Rhys Millen or Loeb or other driver to have the record against younger drivers, maybe the same for Mouton the only woman to set a record in Pikes Peak
yes but ecu have limits and most important the parts like Injectors size, flow, turbo air pressure specific tuned maps etc. Race cars are tuned for very specific weather conditions one day at a time. They will not install parts at sea level and tune them together to run at high altitude.
I have driven this road several times, it is even more scary than it looks. Those rain clouds actually dump hail instead of rain and can cover the road with six inches of snow in a matter of minutes. Imagine trying to drive down in that.
The waste gate does not allow more than a set amount of pressure inside the system(ie 20 psi). When the turbo is spun,it will pressurize the system until 20 psi is reached and at that point, the waste gate opens releasing pressure so it does no exceed 20 psi. At sea level (14.7 psi) the turbo will supply 5.3 psi boost for a total 20 psi. At 10,000 ft (only 10.1 psi) the turbo will supply 9.9 psi boost so the system will still total to 20 psi..... Hope this helps... 500 words is not enough lol
Good run dude and to all those people who said he sucks i would love to see your videos of you going up pikes in your own car but i doubt you guys have the balls to even try it so how about you all give him major props
I supervise some road construction for drilling rigs, and I used to survey roads. I'm very impressed with the engineering of this road. I'd like to see an event with a bunch of drunk rig workers, just getting off shift, trying to get down the mountain during a rig move.
it is too bad that they paved the the greatest hill climb in the world. This is a legacy video of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, this hill climb was done on a dirt course like a true Hillclimb should be.
i'd love to see walter röhrls legendary run in his audi sport quattro s1 pikes peak from 1987 with all that camera angels and where the track was completely gravel that would kick ass. as much as this run by the monster. plain awesome. kudos!
From Wikipedia lol: A race car with some panels intended to resemble the SX4 called the 'Suzuki SX4 Hill Climb Special' with a special 910 hp (679 kW; 923 PS) engine was used at the 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, with a record time of 9:51.278
That thing is all over the place! If that was me driving, i wouldn't be all over the place. I would be about 500m off the road, rolling down the mountain.
This guy is my hero. People like him is why I won't slow down, and you'll NEVER catch me driving some bullshit crown vic. I want to be a badass grandpa

Found this posted by a user named 'henrys' in an evolutionm thread: "The turbo will have work harder to open the wastegate and will be less efficient. This is why turbocharged engines do so well at altitude although they don't make as much power as sea level."
WRC cars are not street legal but they get dispensation to drive on public roads between stages. Loeb is a freak of nature. Did you see him in the xgames recently? He ran a high HP modified version of his WRC Citroen in the rally cross event. THe commentators gave him no chance against Ken Block, Travis Pastrana and Taylor Faust etc. Loeb absolutely creamed them. They never got close. I not in his fan club or anything like that lol ....... im just impressed at what an immense talent he is.
The air may be thinner, but what the turbocharger does is compress that thin air, and the turbo will spool until the wastegate bypasses exhaust gas (which would be the set boost). It makes the "thin" air (less then 1ATM, 101.325kPa) to whatever boost pressure is desired. This is why planes dont fall out of the sky, or lose power with altitude, because they recover the lost air density with turbochargers. Superchargers on the otherhand cannot, since they are driven by the crank.
To equip a compact crossover with a 900+ hp engine, is just insane...PWR result is higher than on Monster's old Pajero...which were also insane before...
This drivers balls have to have there own gravitational pull because he was clipping the cliff... several times!!!! These pikes peak climbers and IOMTT runners are monsters in a class all their own.
After you said that, I read all the comments on this discussion and there are only two theories.1-altitude can rob up to 30% of this turbocharged engine power. 2-altitude doesn't reduce significantly this turbocharged engine power. I wrote the second for you, which is the right one.Turbocharged cars and a quick exhaust valve called waste-gate to release air from the intake when the pressure goes over the set limit, the atmospheric pressure around the car doesnt influence the oxygen intake in TFI!
This guy has no fear. He also has monster skills, confidence in himself, and his machine. He cuts some of those turns like a boss. He also seems to go faster on the dirt! Hay bale? What hay bale! And the spectators must have a death wish!
Yeah Rod millen has his own track outside his house he invites people from around the world to have some fun racing each year its insane thats a kiwi for ya :)
Honestly. I really dont think they needed all that aero. With balls as big as his, im sure the car would have stuck to the ground. Holy crap. What a run!
Ok i thought ecu was programmed with limits in its ability to adapt the AFR. Here i see all diesel to smoke in the mountains and all gas engines smell strong About parts : is a set of injector can handle so big differences between top and bottom of the race ? oh, that is no issue. It would have been interesting to see what Mr Tajima could have done in equivalent machinery. Maybe Ari and Nobuhiro should have a race together.

I've been up pikes peak many times. It's a white knuckle drive at 25mph towards the top . I couldn't imagine it at those speeds... :P
One of THEEE BEST VIDEOS ON RUclips!

congratulations 2011.... Monster has done it now... 9:51, a new record! nice driving
It's amazing the car can even move while being weighed down by that driver's gigantic balls of steel.
i never watched rally...now i play DIRT3(Suzuki sx4 HELL YEAH !!!) and i found that i fugggin' love this shit...mad respect to all these drivers !
Will anyone EVER be able to break Loeb's record? Maybe only Tajima can do it, but he will need a dead-dead serious machine to do it.
