Oh man, so many thoughts on this! The graphics are really intriguing, as the melding of old school pixel art with 3D models gives it a very unique look. And while there's not a great amount of animation frames for characters and enemies (or even the basic walk cycle), the fact that they are drawn frame by frame instead of using modern cheating animation techniques makes me really happy :D. And I absolutely love the way the background is out of focus, giving the environment almost a model build feel to it (though I wish they took this a step further by designing the buildings and trees like they actually where little model builds, instead of just generic 3D models). Also, the gameplay systems seems really cool. I love how they are going for an open, exploratory feel for the game, and making every playable character have unique attributes, even outside of battle. And sticking with old school turnbased battling, while infusing it with some new elements. All in all I'm super stoked to try the demo now!
MrFozzilla I think he means the use of key frames and pixel merging. Key frames are copied images with slight changes to cut down on time spent (think new-age Arthur). Pixel merging (not sure if that's the real term for it) is putting the pixels of a character or object between the pixel resolution of that object, crossing the grid. I haven't seen many stand-out examples of this, but it's mostly apparant when pixel objects are turned at an angle, causing them to simply be rotated along with the grid instead of redrawn on the constant grid. Since this was not possible when the pixel style was used because it had to be, it's cheating.
MrFozzilla I was actually referring to techniques where you use 2D puppetry and stretching to create animation, rather than drawing pictures frame by frame to create the illusion of movement. It always end up looking cheap and wrong, no matter how much effort is put into it, imo. And more often than not the technique is used either because: a) it's less time consuming and thus the animation costs less to produce, or b) the animators aren't skilled enough to pull off real frame by frame animation. Most animators nowadays work with 3D animation after all, which unless you've learned to be proficient at both is a different skill (even if both 2D & 3D animation of course have shared concepts between each other). And since 2D puppetry is basically rigging on a 2D model, it's a skill that translates better for a 3D animator. Doesn't translate into nice looking animations though, I'm afraid... So to me, if you're making 2D animation and you aren't drawing it frame by frame, you're cheating. I'd even take an animation that's nothing but keyframes with no tweens rather than 2D puppetry; and I'm dead serious, btw.
Same here this actually got me most hyped to buy a Switch now. Mario and Zelda will be awesome of course too but Octo really tickles my RPG senses all the right ways.
Now this is FF 10 :P well it a type of FF 10ish game? Still it kinda sad we lost the only serie that was doing Trun basse RPG whit realistic graphique... (oh well I guess Xcom and Valkiria chronicle could work but they are not really True RPG (they are more tactical game))
Played the demo for about an hour. still going at it. Quite pleased with combat and the overall look and feel of the game. High on my list of titles to buy for the switch.
I must say, I kind of agree. While Xenoblade 2 was one of the games I was more excited about at the Switch Demo, Octopath Traveler seems to be having a much more promising development.
I love the art style, but I tried the demo and found it kinda boring. Visually it's very beautiful. The art style reminds me of Secret of Mana so I was hoping it would be active battle.
judgebeanhead so because you didn't pay attention to the battle style they showcased and assumed it would be something else, it's bad/boring? Great logic bud
judgebeanhead if you can invest in the story it's not boring. I've played Primrose's Path and I look forward to see her revenge go through. Now onto Olberic's Path. Looking forward to getting to know the rest of the cast. 2018 can't get fast enough.
This just bumped up to being one of my most anticipated Switch games! The blending of JRPG's and older table top style Western RPG's is something that I always wanted as an RPG fan. I have high hopes for this game! About to play the demo :)
I'm somehow more hyped for this than Pokemon. I can't tell if that means that Square did a great job with this game or GameFreak's game was sub-par. Then again, opinions.
Dwayne Somethin GameFreaks 3rd games were always sub par when they were new but when you look back at the older ones they where the best game in the generation like platinum or emerald.
Dwayne Somethin Game Freak Pokemon series isn't as what it used to be and I think people know what to expect by now. This looks pretty fresh and combines both Western and eastern RPG elements. Plus the art style is unique,so it seems to have more going for it. But those are also my opinions.
it's probably because we're so used to the formula and look of pokemon games and already know what to expect from them (even if they tried to switch it up with Sun/Moon). and it's also worth mentioning that nothing announced for pkmn ultra is even relatively exciting. i thought it was going to be a squeal like black/white/2 but it's looking like a total dud so far.
Man...so excited for this game. While watching the Nintendo Switch presentation back in...I think it was January, I couldn't stop drooling over this game being shown and was wondering when they'd show it again. This Nintendo Direct REALLY made me want a Switch and just in time now that a Mario Odyssey Switch bundle with two beautiful red joycons is coming out in a bit over a month!
I wasn't sure about this game at first, but after having played the demo, I'm super excited! I thought the graphics looked amazing in the trailer, but (of course) it's even better on a large HD TV. The combat system feels awesome, especially with the HD rumble. It makes me feel that much more powerful. Additionally, knowing when to Boost and how much Boost you should use makes for very interesting strategies. I really can't wait to see where they take this game.
Definitely the highlight of the show for me. As someone who likes the Brave Default combat system, this team's amazing style of art and music, this was already bound to be high up my list. But the converging stories, and unique approaches to RPG overworlding of each character, are what really elevated it above and beyond.
I've been waiting for this game since it was announced in January, and I was so pleased that Nintendo & Square Enix surprised us with a demo after we hadn't heard a thing about it since January! I'm so happy this title is getting the positive attention it deserves, and I can't wait for the full game to arrive. Honestly it's my most anticipated game of 2018 at this point. I hope Square Enix will consider using this style in the future for brand new projects as well as remakes. I'd love to see some classic JRPGs like the early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games remade in this '2D-HD' style.
Usually I'm not into games like this, rpg type games never really interested me before. But after trying the demo, they won me over. This game is a must play. Like I think I'll likely be playing this demo even after I beat it. I'm hungry for the full version. I would suggest this game to anyone.
Loved every second of the demo. Just glad I don't have a certain number of times I can use the demo, because I'm going to be playing this over and over until the full game comes out!
I was not looking forwards to this when i first saw it on the Nintendo switch presentation half a year ago but now after the direct I love it and now i want to play it and use it for inspiration for my own game.
As a pixel art freaking lover, this is a must pick even if the gameplay is not good (but probably will be awesome since it's from the Bravely Default team).
I played the demo and surprisingly enjoyed it A LOT to say the least... I normally don't like (J)RPGS but this game is awesome! I hope a lot of people pick this up or at least try the demo!
I can already tell this is going to be a masterpiece... the demo is simply sublime and I didn't even touch the Primrose demo. Awesome game ! Will definetly keep an eye on it :D
I like how they seem to be implementing the whole "who you chose changes what happens" idea that they used in Seiken Densetsu 3. This looks really promising.
this is the rpg that younger me loved and wanted more of. so happy to be able to play another portable rpg soon :) I miss the feeling of losing yourself in the story, through battles, the characters, etc. to the point where you forget where you are and what time it is (lol). this game is gonna have so many hours put into it ^_^
I love fighting random NPC's. I hope they take advantage of that and have great surprises. I liked it the most in Radiata Stories. Mostly because you kick them. It really reminds me 3D Dot Heroes the most though in looks, just with 2D character sprites.
DueMagician921 It's so good lol With so many old JRPGs coming back slowly, I hope they finally will as well! I wouldn't mind Shadow Hearts and Valkyrie Profile 2 too.
I'm honestly interested in this game, it'll probably become super underrated
Kiawe you liar. Some things never change with
You. May you find dickflower and start anew
Hughesflow27 wtf
Kiawe You're right. Hey we gave them something to think about though huh?
Lol
Hopefully you can transfer your data from the demo to the full version.
Definitely a *8/8* for me
g8 b8 m8 i r8 8/8
Too much 8
Gr8 m8, you gave it a good r8ing
btuuu 10/10
Oh man, so many thoughts on this!

What are "modern cheating animation techniques"? Not trying to argue with you or anything, just curious what you meant by that
MrFozzilla I think he means the use of key frames and pixel merging.
Key frames are copied images with slight changes to cut down on time spent (think new-age Arthur).
Pixel merging (not sure if that's the real term for it) is putting the pixels of a character or object between the pixel resolution of that object, crossing the grid. Since this was not possible when the pixel style was used because it had to be, it's cheating.
Robert Blanchard I'm into animation a bit so I know about keyframes and such but that second part is news to me
Thanks for the info
The demo was flawless imo
MrFozzilla I was actually referring to techniques where you use 2D puppetry and stretching to create animation, rather than drawing pictures frame by frame to create the illusion of movement. It always end up looking cheap and wrong, no matter how much effort is put into it, imo.

"Eight brave souls"
"Eight lands"
"Eight stories"
I give this game an 8
Out of 8
gr8 b8 m8, i r8 8 out of 8
Waheed Abdullah it looks so boring.
tjlnintendo lmaoooooooooooooooop
Out of 10
Too many 8s
It's amazing how many choices you make in this game!
This game needs to chill it's already got me by the balls. If only I had a switch I'd be on that demo immediately.
Marche800 to tell you I just played the demo and even tho this game demo is far from being polished it's really good the story is very engaging.
Same here this actually got me most hyped to buy a Switch now. Mario and Zelda will be awesome of course too but Octo really tickles my RPG senses all the right ways.
im going to buy a switch just for this
Marche800 I played the first story, it was good. Like I played Bravely Default
C ddd not even for breath of the wild? Even if you don't like that type of game you'll love it afterwards
"Antagonistic Man"
Oh boy, I can't wait to play as Protagonistic Man!
TheRedCap30 He probably doesn't talk so that he can be more relatable to the player.
Nathaniel Driggs Eh, it's Squeenix. The main character might be an established character, like they did in a good number of Final Fantasy games.
Robert Blanchard Yeah, all the characters are voice acted if the two in the demo are anything to go off of
TheRedCap30 I see what you did there, sir
Now THIS is an RPG!
Link Densetsu you go and do research.
Link Densetsu why?
Now this is FF 10 :P well it a type of FF 10ish game?
Still it kinda sad we lost the only serie that was doing Trun basse RPG whit realistic graphique...
(oh well I guess Xcom and Valkiria chronicle could work but they are not really True RPG (they are more tactical game))
Knight Warrior Now this is a rly boring game
Knight Warrior just because it has old style does not mean "This is an RPG" lmao many good current RPG out there
Oh Square Enix..
You have done it again
Not gonna lie this looks amazing and right down my alley
The music has already got me so hyped and coupled with the art style. OFF TO DOWNLOAD THE DEMO!
This game looks fantastic
A Nintendo Switch exclusive from the makers of the Bravely Default series. A definite must for both Switch owners and fans of JRPGs.
Looks absolutely rad.
Jealous trolls be like: I could make this with Rpg Maker in 2 weeks!
With Unreal Engine 4 and original orchestrated music, I'd love to see them trolls try lol. xD
I’d like to see them try.
Seriously, I want more games like this and I heard there will be a sequel soon.
*1 weeks
*claimed them
wonder why they haven't done it yet lol
Played the demo for about an hour. still going at it. Quite pleased with combat and the overall look and feel of the game. High on my list of titles to buy for the switch.
Primrose can allure me any day.
MarioSonic64 Saw Etika's stream?
No
MarioSonic64 She's a snake
Slufffy Gamer Aren't we all?
This looks SOOOO AWESOME! I'm incredibly hyped!
I'm crying...this is so beautiful..
DragonLord222 I am sure you are crying bc of this game.
I want this more than Xenoblade 2....*puts up shield*
Spryte-WiiMix xenoblade looks boring
While I loved Xenoblade, this had a better trailer.
I must say, I kind of agree. While Xenoblade 2 was one of the games I was more excited about at the Switch Demo, Octopath Traveler seems to be having a much more promising development.
Can't we have both? I don't want to choose between them. :'(
Gettin both
This music! I need this now!
Game looks crispy
I'm gonna buy it mainly cause it just is visually unique. I like the art for the characters a lot besides the graphics.
FaithyTree HD 2D!

The graphics are astounding
So who's playing the demo right now??? :)
Josie Dez Me! 😃
Josie Dez. THIS GUY, RIGHT HERE!
Josie Dez I can't no switch, but is it a good?
metalwater81 It's awesome. Its very easy to understand. The battle system is very simple yet fun. I'm playing with Primrose atm.
metalwater81. I don't know how you do it living without a switch this long. The game is fantastic, btw.
Can't wait to try the demo
I'm going to download the demo once I get home. I can't wait for this game!
Got the demo as soon as I could. I'm coming 😫
Still stunning to this day. Can't wait for the second
Playstation fan here, but this looks amazing looks like I'll be getting a switch for this and xenoblade chronicles 2!
This just bumped up to being one of my most anticipated Switch games! The blending of JRPG's and older table top style Western RPG's is something that I always wanted as an RPG fan. I have high hopes for this game! About to play the demo :)
Is this going to get a physical copy? If so, this is a Day One buy for me!
no digital only sorry.
Highly likely, if not Nintendo is stupid.
Brandon Luong It’s the choice of the publisher, not Nintendo.
i really hope they release a physical copy
Brandon Luong That's not Ninty's choice
Just finished playing the demo for about half an hour. This games gonna be good!
HD 2D looks great!
Remake of GOLDEN SUN and FFVI like this PLEASE !!!
Notorious Yasss!
I'd say it's Square. They may get flak here and there, but at the end of the day, they know how to present a game. The artstyle just amplifies things.
Dwayne Somethin Game Freak Pokemon series isn't as what it used to be and I think people know what to expect by now. This looks pretty fresh and combines both Western and eastern RPG elements. Plus the art style is unique,so it seems to have more going for it. But those are also my opinions.

Dwayne Somethin the team who makes the bravely games are amazing
This game looks absolutely stunning!
Low-key hyped for this
That music...I wanna be in this journey. Please take me!!!
Looks awesome! Downloading demo now.
Gotta say.....
WHAT A GAME!!!! THAT DEMO WAS THE BEST!!!
Man...so excited for this game. This Nintendo Direct REALLY made me want a Switch and just in time now that a Mario Odyssey Switch bundle with two beautiful red joycons is coming out in a bit over a month!
I love the pixel art characters in the 3D land, it reminds me of Pokémon Black and White.

ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER MADE
FRIKEN GORGEOUS!! Ahh... ! No words can describe how beautiful this game looks!
Loved the demo so much! cant wait to buy the full version in 2018!!
I LOVE THE GRAPHICS
I've been waiting for this game since it was announced in January, and I was so pleased that Nintendo & Square Enix surprised us with a demo after we hadn't heard a thing about it since January! Had a great time with the demo. I'm really looking forward to this now!
Just bought. Just about to play. Fingers crossed for turn based! BRING BACK THE LOVE!
This game is INCREDIBLE!!! I can see it being RPG of the year when it releases! Nintendo is BACK, baby!!!
The reminds me a lot of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the chosen where you play as your party members!!! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
... Don't you always play as your party members in an RPG
Love this Game!
THIS is the Square Enix that I love. So glad they're going back to their roots on this one. The music is top notch as always too.
The music for this game is absolutely fantastic!
The storyline is so freaking amazing , for everyone who chose to start as Primrose , did the story make anyone else want to or literally cry ???
Usually I'm not into games like this, rpg type games never really interested me before. But after trying the demo, they won me over. This game is a must play. Like I think I'll likely be playing this demo even after I beat it. I'm hungry for the full version. I would suggest this game to anyone.
this is my kind of RPG awesome music
What gorgeous piece of artistry. I swear the art style itself should be put in a museum.
I'm already in love with the soundtrack
Lets apperciate this music for a second please
Such a beautifully crafted RPG, you bet I'm getting this.
Wow this game came out of nowhere for me. Wow it looks so unique! The music sounds great and I can't wait to try it out.
This seems beautiful. And the music is fantastic! I'll give this a chance!
So hyped for this game!!
Loved every second of the demo. Just glad I don't have a certain number of times I can use the demo, because I'm going to be playing this over and over until the full game comes out!
DAY ONE PURCHASE. The demo is fantastic.
What I love about this trailer is that there is no graphical trickery. What you see is what you get and what you get is amazing.
Definetly getting it. Looks beautiful and very good
I haven't been this hyped since overwatch! The graphics look so beautiful!
SaGa - Octopath Traveler
These gameplay mechanics LOOK
SOO
GOOD
Square you need to make more games like this again.
Eightly Default...
Bravely Traveler
Final Octopath Trigger Default of Mana: Legend of the Seven Stars
Tony Bamanaboni [TomatoPowers] Eight Stars*
Lol. Ye this game definitely has the look of it. I keep tricking myself thinking it actually is a bravely default game
But instead of Brave Points (BP) they use Boost Points (BP),although they work a bit differently.
I was not looking forwards to this when i first saw it on the Nintendo switch presentation half a year ago but now after the direct I love it and now i want to play it and use it for inspiration for my own game.
Played the demo and it was amazing this will be the best square RPG in YEARS
man I want to listen to that soundtrack from 1:57 forward all day it's so good
Eisenberg has the same English VA as Dio from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
So Patrick Seitz?
Yup
As a pixel art freaking lover, this is a must pick even if the gameplay is not good (but probably will be awesome since it's from the Bravely Default team).
The setup of the 8 separate stories brings back memories of "Live A Live". If it turns out to be anything like that, I'm instabuying.
1:05 I love the music that starts here!
I been waiting a long time for a game like this
"outta my way"
Olberic voice is huge
Guys u need to try the demo it's tremendous
I played the demo and surprisingly enjoyed it A LOT to say the least... I normally don't like (J)RPGS but this game is awesome! I hope a lot of people pick this up or at least try the demo!
THIS SHOULD BE BRAVELY THIRD
Skraatch That Don't worry, we'll get Bravely Third (Hopefully for the Switch and 3DS). But this game looks absolutely amazing in it's own right!
Well at least Eisenberg is in this game.
Abel G Isn't that Caldisla at 1:07?
ProTactician Now that you mention it,IT REALLY LOOKS LIKE CALDISLA.Eisenberg is Olberic's last name though.
Also just notice the name Eisenberg as you mention it :D
I wasn't really interested at the first sight but I'm SO hyped rn, totally going to buy this game!
THIS is a game I would get, an epic looking RPG!
I absolutely love how this game looks.
this is the rpg that younger me loved and wanted more of. so happy to be able to play another portable rpg soon :) I miss the feeling of losing yourself in the story, through battles, the characters, etc. to the point where you forget where you are and what time it is (lol). this game is gonna have so many hours put into it ^_^
man i played the demo and its GOOD!
The voice acting 😍. I'm pretty damn excited for this game.
This is how I could imagine a golden sun rendition for the switch
ALRIGHT GUYS. WE JUST GOTTA MAKE SHURE WE DON'T GO TO WWlll BEFORE THIS COMES OUT. AND WERE GOOD
We're good
Wow, the music is superb!
Oh my God! I just played the Demo and never even heard about this before. I love this game already and can't wait for the full version!
How long is the demo?
That one shitposter that lives in your fridge around one hour of actual game play, but you can train with the battle system as long as you want
Cannot wait for this game!!! The demo was soooo fun! It left me with wanting more.😅
I really.. REALLY liked what I saw and played.. Congratulations Square and Nintendo..
