Badass truck! I worked for a guy who had one of those with wrecker bed on it. He had a small junk yard and we used it for moving cars around the yard. It was a beast!
It was about 55 years ago, just over the ridge from you in Doty. The machine was a 1951 Dodge half ton pilot house. It sounded just like your power wagon except it was a 3 on the tree with fluid drive. This video takes me right back there and begs this question. How can an old jalopy pickup $5 worth of gas, a friend and a old rainy muddy Pacific Northwest afternoon bring back such warm fuzzy memories?
What a beast. My late Father used to wake up early to plow our road in the Michigan winter in his ‘47 Power Wagon. That truck ended up in the (now defunct) Walter P Chrysler Museum.
My friend and I bought several of these monsters when they were cheap in the 80's. We had so much fun in the desert with them. So simple and so bulletproof. Miss them all. Sure enjoyed the video.
I always thought an old power wagon would be cool to have, and yours sure fits the bill! A friend had one and we had a lot of fun on the backroads of Western Pa !
reminds me on my 80 w150 slant i just did. After some time i got it to not only idle correctly but got the cooling setup right and i wanted to test it on the highway and yeah a piston in the front caliper is not happy at all soooo that puts off going anywhere fun to do some mudding. i want that powerwagon and all the problems that come with
What a old beast. I remember a horror movie with a truck like this back in the day and maximum overdrive had a air start tow truck somewhat like it too. Yesterday I saw one of these tricked and restored, stretched, with hemi power too. Way over the top but cool. It was green. Ya know when I was young ya before electric light lol these were common to see sitting on old farmstead places. If the tractor broke they used them to pull a plow and I am serious that's a thing. You may want to soak that tank it's a bit rustic lol. That was some goo in the bowl. Have a tractor with the same issues. Lumpy gravy lol
Oh yeah. These were designed to drag farm implements and essentially be a truck and tractor together. The rear PTO setup is really neat. Mine doesn’t have it, but it’s obvious where it would have been. Yeah… I guess I should have done something with the tank before pressing it into service. That’s my bad.
Even better - forget the clutch. What we were both doing here is floating gears like a big rig. I was double clutching for the first year or so, but thanks to a couple commenters referencing my double clutch technique on a previous video, I learned the truck shifts much better with simple rev matching and no clutch. But occasionally one forgets 😅
Naaaaahhh… that’s what gears are for 😅 eventually I will go through the carb (or replace it) and do a tune up or something. But I’m ok with slow. It’s not supposed to get there quickly
This truck was made back when if you broke down, all you needed was a pair of pliers, a piece of bubble gum and some bailing wire and you could almost always get it back up and running. Back when stuff was meant to be fixed and to last.
What a rig that truck is! Looks both fun and scary at the same time! It's amazing that it's still running after all these years or as my uncle use to say, well worn in. He had a 61 Jeep Willys truck that was terrifying as your rig is hahaha!
@@DeadDodgeGaragethat thing can hurt you even if you are careful. Rough riding as all get out, and that steering wheel... NEVER hold the steering wheel in a way that fingers wrap around it or go through the inside of the rim. It WILL bite you.
Those old Dodge flathead 6 were indestructible. We had one that had 5 cracks in the block, wouldn't hold coolant. I beat the shit out of our 56 Fargo 1 ton. I blew the rear end, getting stuck in the bush hauling wood. It just wouldn't die!
Ok, that settles it - I want one. And after we get my brother's 55 Plymouth going I'll get a Power Wagon. Both are super cool!! Why do I want a flathead so badly???!!
I have done a few videos on that. I sold that truck in driving condition, and shortly thereafter the new owner broke the crankshaft in half… in his defense, the new, clean engine oil had all mysteriously disappeared. I bought it back, then sold it back to my friend who owned it before, and now we’re going to put a big block in it. Hopefully sooner than later… I’m getting tired of looking at it. Haha.
Those Power Wagons were specifically built to be able to go off-road, BUT trust me and be grateful it didn't happen.... Your body is thanking you. Your spine didn't end up being compressed, your kidneys didn't get bruised, your shoulders didn't get strained and your hands didn't get hammer smacked by the steering wheel suddenly responding by turning as things such as boulders, roots, ruts, Chevy's, Fords or Toyotas get run over which instantly change the Power Wagons steering geometry as its front tires goes over them. Even at 1/20 mph the steering wheel will suddenly snap back at about 200 mph as it overtakes such obstacles and if you have your fingers or thumbs or any part of your hands placed so they are on the inside of the steering wheel when it happens, the spokes of the steering wheel can break bones. With those trucks, it is not a matter of IF the steering wheel snaps back, but it is a matter of WHEN it happens and I guarantee you that it WILL HAPPEN.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I was trying to be funny. I would hope you are aware of how they ride and handle since you own it and that confirms that you know the humor of why I said that your body would be grateful for the delay. However there are a lot of the viewers who are not familiar with them and are not likely to understand what a vehicle like that can do to them if they were in one. For example few people realize the steering wheel can hurt them at low speed just by holding it wrong. Broken hands and dislocated fingers and thumbs HURT.... LOL.
Noooo. This here is a workhorse. I was hoping to find another 2wd art deco truck (‘39-42, ‘46-47) like I used to have to build something like that when I stumbled across this unit. Being the original factory 4x4 civilian truck, being all original, and being highly desirable means this isn’t a rat rod candidate. But I hope to do one someday.
Surprisingly? I haven't had any complaints. Helping them all with their cars helps. And... and I know this will come as a shock... but I'm not the loud neighbor.
No. If all I had was a cab, or the factory drivetrain was missing or destroyed, I would strongly consider a Cummins or full chassis swap. But I have a complete, fully operable original drivetrain here. It doesn’t smoke. The clutch doesn’t slip. The transmission and transfer case work as they should. I can’t take it apart! That would be like kicking a puppy. This one will live on as a survivor - but if I find another acceptable donor some day, it’s on.
WHY? The way that truck is set up that stock old flathead 6 already has enough power to pull George Washington and the rest of Mt Rushmore from its current location all the way to Washington State.
Dude..... FOR THE LOVE OF MR NORM....... PLEASE FIX THAT TRUCK!!! I WILL HELP ...I WILL COME THERE.... BE DAMP FIGHT THE MOOSES SAVE THE DONKEY AND EAT THE BREAKFAST BURRITO
I mean I’m working on it. Rear fenders are $800, bed floor, complete interior kit, and then a body and paint job some day… if you want to send me some of your hard earned bucks I’ll be happy to spend them! 😅

@@clevelandmaker386 I have been looking for rear fenders for this truck for over two years... I got the tailgate from Tom, and it's awesome because it almost perfetly matches the cab. I made suitable bed sides out of a '78 8' stepside bed. But rear fenders are really tough. Those $800+ repros are just about the only option I've come up with - and that kinda hurts.
Badass truck! I worked for a guy who had one of those with wrecker bed on it. He had a small junk yard and we used it for moving cars around the yard. It was a beast!
The amount of past abuse and neglect that truck has endured has to be enormous. Yet with only minor attention it keeps on ticking. Remarkable!
Mopar tough!
