you didn't mention size and weight, one of the best if not THE BEST small camera you can buy, even today. Shame Leica isn't capitalized well enough to continue the CL line, still my favorite travel camera, by far.
I recently ended up buying the CL because of this video. And I love it. Thank you for the awesome detailed comparison. I've never enjoyed using a camera so much!
So, Matt, I bought a CL and it is a lot of fun to use. I also notice that it works with my Godox X2T Flash trigger and Godox flash units (B&H sells them) for Olympus hot shoes, which I use for Micro Four Thirds Panasonic Lumix hot shoes. I also notice that the battery is identical to my Lumix GX8 battery. Panasonic is very big in Battery technology, including having made batteries for Tesla cars for years. Since the CL uses a lot of battery power, it is cheaper to buy the Panasonic version - the BCL12 battery. Thanks for your great Leica reviews; this is my first Leica camera body.
Hi Jim , Welcome to Leica and congrats on your CL! Thanks for the battery information, that's a great tip thank you. You might enjoy some of my other videos , I've done quite a few as a heavy user of this camera for 3 years or so.
Iam a fujifim shooter and don't have any leica but iam watching this 23minutes video completely without any skipped. Its so pleasing review with ton of gorgeous images
Your channel is fantastic. It is like watching a gripping series where no detail is missed and the story build up is precise. You are sharing such wonderful information without unnecessary distractions in the story telling. It much like the Leica. Thank you.
what a fantastic review Matt! I'm sure there are quite a few people out there with an itch for their first Leica. To those this contribution was very valuable. And your stunning photographs are from another world. This shows that if anything the gear is not gonna be the limitation. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed
Thank you for the feedback! Yes I hope it’ll be useful to someone. Yes as you say considering how much gear I have gear isn’t really needed to make nice photos. Thanks for subscribing. A busy few weeks ahead planned so it’ll be worth it!
Great review Matt. It’s a shame Leica decided to discontinue the digital CL. As you noted, it’s a terrific travel camera and I find it as a perfect backup for a Leica SL2. The menu system is simple, which I really appreciate. It’s highly versatile because it can make use of AF TL, AF SL, and manual LTM, M, and R mount lenses (with appropriate adapters). The Leica SF40 flash unit is a nice companion for the CL.
I have to confess, You got me to click because of the thumbnail. Buttt, I really appreciated the review of the CL. A little old now in 2024, but worth a look.
portrait results are outstanding! both color and bw. all compositions, bw 'lines', sharpness / detail / (depth) of the eyes. The color and blur are all satisfying.
Matt. That’s the best review on any Leica camera. I just watched your 2020 review of the Leica CL. So informative and without the ego or hype or nonsense of many other people who do Leica reviews. Adrian
I'm new to your channel, but greatly appreciate the work and detail knowledge you put into your reviews - especially this on the Leica CL. The Leica 'look' in terms of colour, contrast, clarity etc, has beguiled me ever since I came across Leica as a camera brand and as a photography enthusiast. And then there's the build, the glass, the handling and general ergonomics, lack of extraneous menus and a wonderful sense of focus on the essentials for engaging and rewarding photography. I'm considering the CL as my first digital camera (excluding my iPhone) as my 35mm film Olympus rangefinder and RB67 Mamiya have all been gathering dust for years once the iPhone came along, and the convenience of having a camera always with me largely replaced having to lug either a studio camera around, or remembering to take the 35mm rangefinder with me on an outing. You mentioned that you felt the CL did not offer the true Leica 'experience' - for which you recommended an M system. And that the CL was more or less a generic APS-C camera that just happened to take Leica glass. For around the same size and weight, I'm considering the Sony A7C - which is FF, along with the CL. Yes, it won't have the Leica look, but it will have the FF Shallow depth of field look rather than the APS-C look - which FF look I generally prefer looking at files. it also strikes me as being very versatile having both photographic and video capabilities, is nicely made and finished and can be used with a variety of lenses, including Zeiss. I'm not necessarily looking to do RUclips video blogging, but I do have a number of outdoor hobbies and interests where it would be nice to shoot video clips as well as stills, to either share, or just to keep for enhancing memories of the experience. Did you test the CL on video at all, and if so, what were your thoughts on that feature? And despite all the pros and cons between a FF hybrid still/movie Sony A7C, and the minimalist photographers tool in the CL, if it was to be your one and only camera, for casual shots of friends and family, travel, formal and candid portraiture, which would you choose to own? I look forwards to your further reviews and thank you again for such a great and informative channel; a happy new subscriber. :-)
Hi John, i've not really used the CL for video but it can do it with limited features. The CL can capture great photos but it depends on the look you want from the camera. If it will help reach me at mrleica.com/zoom and I can answer all you questions and offer a few different options both Leica and other brands.
Nice video. Thanks so much. I had to give up using Leica rangefinders because of my aging eyesight. I now shoot with a Leica Q and a CL. Couldn't agree more about the CL.
They really pushed the CL as, "the camera Oskar Barnack himself would make today." (Founder of Leica and one of the reasons 35mm film actually took off despite being the smaller "worse" option compared to 120mm film (sound familiar? medium format film is obviously better, but 35mm has its strengths...just like APS-C/MFT) I guess they realized that by the release of the CL, the full frame cult was already in full swing thanks to basically every other camera maker but Fuji, Olympus, and Panasonic somewhat; because they went from bringing up the great Barnack's name and praising the CL (rightfully so, one of the best cameras they've made in a long time when comparing strengths and weaknesses) to flat out discontinuing the entire APS-C line. I was lucky enough to pick up a CL body at the lowest point of value before it has surged back to MSRP or higher value. I only have a 35mm Leica TL lens, the rest are all Sigma lenses that work fantastic on the compact body. I could use it for work and be content, but I'd rather have my E-M5.III kit stolen or damaged over my CL kit. There are obvious weaknesses to the smaller sensor of the TL/CL cameras, but that also was said about 35mm film. Leica had a chance to lead a compact premium push with APS-C, a goal truly worthy of bringing up Oskar Barnack, but instead they opted to go the way of quick wealth instead latching onto selling off the brand for maximum profit and making worse more expensive than Lumix cameras with the SL line. All I can do is dream Sigma will take the plunge into an APS-C BSI-CMOS sensor based camera using maybe a modified Quattro/fp L design to suit l-mount body wise and with a solid sensor with the faster readout that comes with APS-C to maybe reduce rolling shutter. If I could get that mixture of tech with the same quality great touch screen and software, I'd buy one on the spot to go with my CL to use my l-mount lenses.
Yes great cameras! I still use mine even years later. I have cameras from all the Leica lines and the CL can hold its own. Lumix might do a follow up if not Sigma.
I agree with your views. I use CL with Sigma 16mm f/1/4; Leica TL 35mm f/1.4 and Sigma 56mm f/1.4. Thinking of getting an M 75mm f/1.5 manual as the telephoto.
One of the fews honest and free minded review about the CL. Usually I ask myself if those who are dismissing it as a poor man M camera or an expensive Fujifilm gear have really used it. I own a CL, an x100s and a digital Pen F and I can say that the Leica is the nearest to the analog spirit of the three. It was my first camera at all and it tooks me only five minutes to set it up to my likes - b/w and all manual - without reading the manual... I know that it could sound blasphemous to the average L[E]yCAnthrope out there, but I use the CL almost esclusively in conjunction with a Pentacon 50mm f1.8 and I really love the results. Of course I'm a bad photographer but not being a professional I enjoy the photography and my CL...
Thanks! Great to hear you enjoy the CL too! NO I love using old lenses on my CL.. see my vintage lens video or Canon LTM lens video.. or Voigtlander lens video haha ..these little lenses are fantastic on the CL :)
Matt Osborne I”ve already seen your videos, they”re a really interesting, mixing professional style with true passion. I suggest you to try the Pentacon 50mm f1.8 on your CL. Here is my Instagram profile instagram.com/monochrome_das_wesentliche/ forget about the pictures, - I’m a poor photographer...🙄 - and just look at the shallow depth of field obtained with that lens. Imho the bokeh it’s on par with ff...
Hello Matt, at first "Best Wishes for 2022" and thanks for your posts. I would like you to clarify something: looking to the Internet, I'm not able to know if the Leica CL is having or not the low-pass filter... If it's having, does it compromise the image quality ? Chris
I bought the Leica CL a few years ago, and it is the most amazing little camera. I bought it with the 23 mm lens, which is marvellous. I like the newest firmware and it now offers a crop mode, like the Leica Q, and this is useful. A comfortable and portable lightweight, excellent quality camera. I especially like the fact there are very few buttons and menu confusion. It is a simple, basic, straightforward, intuitive camera. Good video, Matt. Excellent argument for buying this camera.
I use the Leica CL for two and a half years now with the 23mm Summicron TL f2.0 and the 60mm Elmarit TL f2.8 macro. Outstanding image quality and a lot of fun to work with because I hardly notice the camera while shooting. I also bought a 'Novoflex' adapter ring for my 5 Pentax ltd. prime lenses. They also work very well on this camera, although manual focus only, for me no problem. Nice camera and lens round up with nice images. Thank You
this sounds like an excellent option for street photography - i would put my 5 lens 50mm on it - the cropped sensor is making me hesitate though - thoughts?
Thank you very much for helping me make my mind up. My husband bought me a Leica SL and the 24-90mm lens as a surprise BIG Christmas present. I have only had it 2 days and I am finding it far too big and heavy for my kind of photography (as beautifully engineered as the camera is). I am hoping that the retailer (a good one) will accept a return and let me exchange it for the CL and a couple of lenses and accessories. I currently have a Sony A7Rlll which I love but find, these days, I am using my Galaxy phone camera most of the time because I don't want to lug a big camera about. But, of course, a phone camera is nowhere near the quality I would like. So, HUGE thank you and, here's hoping the shop will agree to a swap. Your portraits at the end of this video are SUPERB.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you again, Matt. Here's the final wish list: the CL body, 18mm pancake, 60mm macro (I do a lot of macro) the Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 Nokton lll and the adapter (just watched your review on that👍) plus 2 spare batteries and that still leaves change of £140-ish. Just 🙏ing the shop will agree otherwise I'll have take up weight lifting at the age of 68! I'll let you know.
Hi Gary, I’ve shot the CL with 10s of models over 3-4 years so I can’t remember the lenses I see exactly. See the CL blog posts below the video and many images are embedded so you can double click to see the lens info.
Excellent presentation. Greatly appreciate the portraits at the end. I shoot people/street interview shots, but I notice there are very few examples of people portraits on photo sites or even lens ads...making new lens selection difficult for my purposes.
Terry Allen thanks Terry, I’m happy to target that niche then! :) All my videos show portraits I think. The M lenses review series etc. Much more to come as we go forward. 👍🏻😊
Just such an excellent review! Thank you very much, this is just what I am looking for. I used an original Leica SL film camera back in the 70's, so for me it's a return to yesterday with today's technology. Thank you!
Thanks John! I'm working backwards to you, i've had the CL for 3 years and I recently bought the Leicaflex SL and also the Leica SL.. (see those videos) All are great cameras!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you again Matt for those videos, excellent! If I were going to buy a CL Kit to save money, which I am seriously considering besides the Leicaflex, which of the 2 kit lenses would you recommend? I have a line on a beauty of a Leicaflex SL2, so most likely buying before Christmas. Buying the Leica CL is next, while the Kit pricing is in effect, just left with that question of which lense makes the most sense. Take care, and Happy Holidays!

I just bought one of these for the m glass I use on my X1D and thanks to this video I’m now super excited to get going! Will also get the 18mm for a light travel combo which is not really the forte of the XID. Thanks for the great review!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yep managed to “steal” a 23mm summicron absolutely mint for £850 on eBay and a 55m f1.4 7artisans L mount for £100 both Fab. Only thing with the 7a lens only focus peaking available but I’m v happy with the pics it takes. All paid for (incl the CL body) by selling my Rf50mm which has been languishing since I got the hasselblad.
The CL was my first Leica. My eyesight is not great, and it varies with light and time of day - so I can't rely on manual focus. I have a Q2Mono and an SL2 now, and they're my favorite 'experience' in photography. I have some Sony Alphas, and they're very good, but they always seem to take a bit more effort to get variable results.
You have helped me. Big thanks!! I wanted a second body & was tossed b/w Used Leica Q or New Leica D-Lux 7.. Used was putting me off and D-Lux 7 being a micro 4/3 .. this CL is a sweet spot and will give more freedom with lens range. Getting one now!!
Man, I’ve got an itch that I may have to scratch pretty soon. My LUMIX digital cameras just don’t have the look I want, even if I use my Leica glass. I’m looking at the CL really closely. Great vid as usual. I’ll look at your other vids soon before I take the plunge. Thanks!
Hi Henry, yes I don’t shoot Leica for the logo. I like the look of the sensor. I have a capable Nikon D800 but don’t like the look of the sensor - perfect but lifeless
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Well it came in yesterday. It was listed as Excellent + at Adorama here in the states. I was shocked to get it in the original packing with all accoutrements in place, right down to the fancy drawer box and silk bags. The camera itself looks mint. I am so grateful for your review. Now that I have had time to practice with it, all of your suggestions were spot on! Especially the use of M lenses and manual focus. I thought the Sony a6000 series was good, but this one surpasses the Sony for the type of photography I enjoy. Now I can use my M and LTM glass on digital and enjoy it instead of struggling with my other digitals and M glass.
Hi, Matt, I think a CL should be good for shooting moving subjects with my M lenses, especially the longer ones. Interesting to test my Tele-Elmarit 135 mm lens at its moderately high ISO.
I discovered recently your channel and I am really enthousiastic about it ! Thx for all this share from a Leica lover. I just bought a Leica Q and I really enjoy it . The Leica Q2 was too expensive for me but really I don t regret it as I am fond of the 28mm focal length. I was not a all interested in the CL (I even didn’ t know it existed …) but after seeing your videos on it I am really wondering if it wouldn’t be the perfect complement of it for longer focal and mainly portrait… You perhaps could have include it in your recommendation to buy it. It s even the same batteries !! :). So Now I damn you because I need to find the budget for it :). Thanks again and keep on make us dream with these wonderful cameras and lenses.
Matt - thanks for the video, commentary, and example pictures. Please consider making a video using the native Leica L mount lenses on the Leica CL. How do they feel in the hand, how close do they focus, how quick/quiet is the auto focus, how stiff/sloppy is the manual focus, and how does the image quality feel to your M lenses? With your experience it would be helpful for us amateurs. Lastly, I love your portraits - very nice indeed. Thanks.
fbmooers thanks and great suggestion! Yes I have this in the pipeline but your specifics help too so thanks. I have other stuff pre-planned first but perhaps in September I can. (You can now join Patreon - link in video description to see videos coming sooner plus lots more unseen videos. I might try to put up a BTS clip showing the CL + 18mm kit lens this weekend for you as I own that) 👍🏻😊
Hi Craig, I checked to remind myself.. they are shot with 10+ different lenses. The best suggestion would be watch the lens reviews I post and you may see some of the same photos shared there.
Why not a Sony A7 III instead of a Leica CL? Full-frame, you can also customize buttons for magnification, it's cheaper, has in-body stabilization and battery allows triple the shots.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I also "hated" digital cameras, but I have now used digital cameras since 2007 and I will not get back to analog ever again ! I loved my old manually and mecanical cameras, but now with Sony cameras it is like having an old tool modernised, I use my Sony A7RIV in manual mode with both aperture, shutter, ISO and most of the time manual focusing, when you know the camera well it is the best ever tool for photography I have ever used in 5 decades !
I doubt .most of you could tell the difference between apc and ff when the photography is good. A7 3 has a class action suite for failed shutter mechanism

You mention that what you see in the EVF is what you get. About depth of field with a TL Lense or even SL Lense, when you shut the aperture with the dial, it doesn’t really shut the aperture until you press the shutter button. So what you see is always full aperture like on DSLR. Is there a way to preview the result like it is possible to do on a DSLR pressing a front button with the CL?
Thanks for the correction. I shoot manual focus lenses 99% of the time so I dial in the aperture on the lens and see the resulting effect. Yes sorry I forget it can be used with AF lenses too! (and they work differently). Apologies.
I'm probably not the best person to ask as I don't use this function but maybe ask on a forum or check the camera specs online. Hopefully you find the answer.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt for your fast answer. On the Lulix S1 series you can preview the aperture but not sure if you can on SL2, CL nor TL2...
Very, very thoughtful review. Much appreciated. And great images as well! Very beautiful. One question I had concerns the Leica files. Images shot with Leica (CL or otherwise) always seem so nice. I wonder if this has to do with the image processor, or maybe it’s just the lenses? The colors are always so beautiful. I have three Zeiss zm lenses which I use on Sony a7r3 presently, but was considering the CL as a compact camera option. Do you think that the Leica color space offers something different (more) than Fuji, for example, which I have shot on in the past and have loved. (I am also considering the x100v.)
Hello thanks for your feedback! Colours are a combination of glass and sensor so you can’t pin it to just one. Each brand has their look, cameras and lenses. I would suggest searching your lenses on Flickr and try to find them used on a CL or M10 (especially) to see the colours. The Leica M8 and M9 has very different colours as shown in those videos. I have a lens shoot out video in the pipeline and it shows how much colours change by lenses alone.
Hi Steve, you might need to compare images to Fuji images but I would expect it to be similar to the latest Fuji cameras. To my eyes the CL DR is similar to the Leica SL/SL2, M10, Lumix S5.. .and better than my M240 in that regard.
The crop factor does not affect the perspective though, so the face distortion from using a 35mm on APS-C is not the same as using a 50mm on a full-frame.
R G I am not sure to understand your point. The perspective is Only dépendant on the distance to the subject… so if you are at the same distance, the perspective /distortion of the face will be the same with a 50mm on a full frame and with a 35mm on a crop sensor… the only slight difference will be the size of it as 35*1.5 = 52.5 which is not exactly 50mm but I it won t increase the distortion… If we push it a little as with a 52.5 équivalent you can be a little more far from your subject to have more or less the same size, it will be even less distorsion with the 35mm on apsc :)
@@philmtx3fr “the perspective is only dependent on the distance” is not true though. Focal length is a big component as well. To convince your self of that. Use a 21mm and compare a portrait taken with the same magnification as a 50mm (so 2 different distances as well). The face will be exaggerated with the 21. The effect is even more pronounced as you shift the subject away from the center of the lens.
@@rg3412 if you change the distance of course it will change the perspective / distortion … that s why I say the distance determines the perspective . Do this test on your side : 2 pictures same distance one at 21 , one at 50, then enlarge /zoom the picture taken with 21 (like a crop ) you will have the same perspective ;)
Thanks! Sadly not but i've never noticed not having it. Leica M cameras don't have IBIS but can still take nice photos. The SL2-S has IBIS* These photos are all quite old now. See the latest video for new images :)
In Chapter 6 you talk about the EVF and your conclusion is that with the CL you have a WYSIWYG-preview of the picture. And it is not with the Leica M. Is that really true? With the M240 and M10 I have Live View and can use an EVF too. To me this works very good too. Beside this, thanks for the Video and a lot of other videos. I get a lot of informations from your videos.
Thanks Joakim. This video was made before I got the M240 EVF. If you asked me today the M is better to have a constant view of a scene such as street or wedding photos BUT the CL is still easier for WYSIWYG but you get blackouts from EVF. CL is faster than M EVF (M240 one is very slow) but and you have to half press on shutter to see exposure on M but CL is constant. Don't get me wrong I still use the M240 but if the CL was FF it would be a killer combo. I do prefer RF cameras normally so this surprised me.
Matt, I am wondering if you have used the new Sigma L mount APS C zoom on the CL. It's focal equivalent is 28-75mm at f2.8, what makes it interesting is its small size yet has autofocus. I would like if you can get your hands on one to do a review. This is another thing the CL could do vs. a rangefinder, except the Tri Elmar which mimics a zoom but you need an extra VF
Thanks, i've not used any Sigma lenses yet but I would like to try a few. I will see what I can do next year. If I can grow the channel it should give me more access to more gear to test.
I am using only Sigma lenses on my CL and in particular the 18-50 zoom. The two prime I have are the lenses I prefer (90mm and 35mm f2) but the zoom is great for travel and convenience reason. Great image quality.
Hey Matt, I just bought a fed 2 and a bunch of primes including a Jupiter 9 and canon 135 lenses ($500 total) and I’m looking into getting a digital camera to shoot these on. I know mirrorless is the way to go but I just don’t trust the system in general. When I hold my Nikon d3 I don’t worry about dropping it and breaking it or it getting wet. It’s just one of the most reliable cameras of the digital age. And I’m looking for that in a mirrorless package. I’m looking at either the Nikon z9 which is crazy expensive rn or a Leica SL. I’ve heard both those cameras are quite robust. But the m39 lenses would look ridiculous on those big bodies. I’m wondering if this camera would be a good match for me. I’m just worried about the build quality, robustness, and if it’s at all weather resistant.
Hi Kevin, the SL is a tank and I love it. I took the SL, CL and M240 for an afternoon model shoot + 5-6 fast primes.. I had equal chance to use all 3 and tried to. Final shoot count was SL 349 / CL 32 / M240 24 :) I guess the SL wins! The CL is great for a compact setup. It is Leica so solid but not weather sealed. I still keep mine for travel/ backup but now use the SL.
Hello, just to say that a Leica M8 is around 800€ here in France... not 1700€ as you mention. I sold mine 1200 because it was in mint condition. 1700€ is more the price of an M9
Matt, at 13:00 you mention how what you see is what you get (exposure-wise) in the EVF on the Leica Cl. This is certainly true for the L-mount lens but does it also apply when one uses an M lens via the Leica M-Adapter L, too?
Very interesting vidio, thanks. I had a Q but it was quite heavy but a fantastic camera. I sold it so I am waiting for the Q2 to drop in price so I can pick one up for around £3k
Thanks Peter. Leica let me borrow the Q for a weekend to test. I liked it, especially for weddings. The CL is much smaller and lighter. I will try to test the Q2 so I can share with you all here.
Thanks Matt for this video. I have studied the CL and am convinced it's the camera for me. What I'd like to know is the silver anodized more durable (eg: scratch resistant, etc.) than the black anodized?
LJS S. Hi, I’ve never seen the silver in person but I can tell you that the black doesn’t have a mark on it after 2.5 yrs of regular use / travel so I think you will be fine with the black and if silver it should be equally as good.
Do you feel comfortable having only one card slot (especially when shooting weddings)? Did you ever have any card fails? It would be great to hear/read your take on that topic.
Hi yes I think with modern cameras and SanDisk Extreme codes it seems ok. I use multiple camera bodies too so I have I guess some cover from that. Any digital feels safe and easy compared to when I shoot weddings on film so I’ve never even considered needing 2 slots. It’s a great question though
Must be very handy for street photography. I saw one second hand Paul Smith limited edition for sale, quite cheap, I wonder if I could change this uggly blueish color :-)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I've got a Lumix S5 + several lenses including the Sigma 16mm. that's why I'm considering completing my gear with a second hand CL mainly for street photography
Congrats Michael! I think you will love it. I didn't expect to like mine let alone it become my main camera! It was only supposed to be a backup solution!
Hi Matt, As usual great video and great review. The good is I already own this CL :-) ... I enjoy it very much using TL lenses and sometime M lenses such as Elmarit 28 or Summicron 35 witch is much smaller than the TL. Thanks for the time spent ... :)
I might not be the best person to ask as I prefer manual focus glass but if you see my 2 sigma lens vids they were fine on CL. No different to on SL from memory.
Hi Matt. I read that the CL is being discontinued so Leica can focus on full frame. Speculation I know but could we see a similar compact size full frame camera from Leica in the future?
Thanks for the excellent review! I really adore this little camera. Maybe one day... if I may give you a minor input on your videos: maybe try lowering your tripod a little bit, so we don’t have the feeling of looking down on you :) Thanks for your work!
Thanks Tobias and for the tip. I will check my tripod before my next recording.. it has probably moved 30x since this video. Hope you can get a CL one day! The price will drop year on year.
Hi Terry, have you seen all my videos on these, I use quite a few. It depends on condition, if both good then it’s a decent price. That lens alone if a clean copy might be $500. See the video and/or get me on mrleica.com/zoom if you need help before buying.
Hello, yes I did a full video on the 18mm. That wins for best size. Other than that I would avoid TL lenses for SL/S5 as you only get half the MP with a APS-C lens (see it in the recent 28mm shoot out video- you will see the difference in size). I use Leica M and R lenses mostly but if you want AF you can check out other L mount lenses. SL lenses are probably the best but you pay higher price.
Thanks Tashi! Yes you can. I would hold the setup by the lens though so not to stress the lens mount. (I have a 200 f2 Nikkor!) :) Just remember the crop factor will give you a 450mm which is probably what you are planning anyway. I use Nikon lenses on my CL a lot.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You have made me bite the bullet and I'm going for the CL. Thanks. I hike a lot , the size is perfect. For that classic Leica colour output which is the main reason for the purchase which first lens should I buy?

I have the CL and find it to be an amazing camera. I also bought recently at Sony A7C which is lovely, and light and full frame. The images from it are amazing, but I really wish it was simplified in terms of menus like the CL. What I like about Leica is that it is minimalist in design and function. Still, the A7C is a very useable camera. I set up the menus to work for me, and I don’t fiddle with them.
@@mrmartygervais Interesting to hear as I'm weighing up both the CL and the A7C as a potential purchase. It will be my first digital camera (discounting my iPhone). Since getting the iPhone my Olympus 35mm film rangefinder has sat in the cupboard gathering dust. Having experienced both, if you could only have one, and as an 'only' camera, would you choose the A7C or the CL?
Fantastic photos. IMHO the CLs design however leaves alot to be desired. It looks like a apsc version of the Q /X with the top cut off to show its structure??...Is it really to recall past leica? If so at least make a faithful homage to the past by making the system functional and have distance scale on the lens to allow for hyperfocal distancing. form follows function...
Thanks Marc, all valid points. Yes I’m happy with only one AF lens for the CL. Like you I prefer ‘proper’ lenses hence I use probably more like 98% M glass. 18mm is a nice size and weight as a backup.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Despite small negatives however the compactness size of the af lens and the form factor has given the CL all the hallmarks to be a great modern system. The L mount alliance looks really promising. Im hoping refined iterations of the CL to come...
I’m tempted to get the CL to go with my SL and use with both my adapted M lenses and native small primes. Trouble is - will this kill my desire to use the SL? I can’t go back to M - my eyesight isn’t up to rangefinder focusing these days.
Thanks Matt, the CL is great. I still use mine as my main camera. You can see weekly videos on Patreon of me using the CL with various lenses on model shoots (BTS video etc) - www.patreon.com/mrleicacom I think you would take the CL if want a light setup or crop factor added to your lenses then SL for shallow DOF and FF look. 2 bodies will gives every lens you have 2 different uses/ focal lengths.
I already have a Lumix G85 with 3 decent lenses. But I am reallllly tempted to enter the leica ecosystem with the CL. I only have two concerns, will it be a little too much for beginners to get the grasp off and most importantly, What if they come out with a CL-2 sometime next year?
The CL is extremely easy to use and the small size makes it very fun and portable. I’m not sure what they could improve but I know people always speak of a possible CL2.
Thank you Robert! No all good on the CL.. you still need goggles on the lens to give access to close focus function but that is mechanical only. Otherwise 100% functionality on CL.
Hi Matt, firstly I have to say what fabulous, thoughtful reviews you do - kept me up until 3AM last night! Just getting back into photography after a 20 year brake (I was semi professional) and wondering what gear to get. My old cameras were Canon F1 and Mamiya RB67 but now want to get into digital and fairly lightweight hence seriously considering the Leica CL over a DSLR. My photography will be mostly landscape which doesn’t appear to be the natural hunting ground for the CL but...why not...or am I missing something? I have always used my film cameras in manual mode and manual focus as I like to keep things simple so what lenses would you recommend? In my 35mm film days I would carry a 24, 35, 50 and 80mm lenses so the Elmarit 18-56mm ‘might’ suffice or should I be looking at a couple of prime lenses say 24/28mm and a 60/70mm equivalent? Finally would my Lee ND graduated filters work with the CL - ie would I be able to preview the effect through the viewfinder? This would all be much easier if I could go into a camera shop but due to COVID it’s quite impossible - living in the SW doesn’t help much either! Many thanks and great pictures btw!
Hi Guy, thanks! Yes I think the CL is fine for most things. You can use wide angle M glass like the Voigtlander 15mm for example. The 18mm TL AF lens is great lightweight setup. See my other M lens videos for more lenses. I tend to use M glass on mine. 28mm Elmarit is amazing and 90mm Macro Elmar if you want small and very sharp. Not the cheapest though. If you want 1-2-1 help on this you can find me on Patreon too. I use as teaching platform and to help people etc. Yes can use filters no problem with adapter.
Many thanks for your fast reply. After watching more of your videos I think I might go down the voigtlander M mount lens route then maybe one day I may get a Leica M camera... What are your thoughts on buying new or used for both camera and lenses and in particular are there any advantages in buying a 2020 camera or lens against ones 3/4 years older plus?
Hi Matt I am very happy with my CL but I get an issue with my sigma 56mm dc dn f1.4 which is the only native L mount lens I have. I am very happy with this combination anyway I get an issue on the visualisation of the depth of field . Usually on hybrids when you push a little the shutter button to focus the aperture is closing to the right aperture value which makes you able to evaluate the final depth of field linked to the aperture you choose through the view finder which is useful. This works for instance on my Leica Q. With my cl and this 56mm sigma lense it doesn’t work as the aperture stays full open when you focus … do you have the same issue on your Leica native lenses or sigma if you have one ? I must say that I am at 4.1 level of firmware so normally up to date… Thx for your feedbacks and experience on it.
Hi Phil, sorry I missed this. Interesting. I've never noticed this though don't have any Sigma lenses either. It's the lens not fully talking to the camera it seems. I don't think you can get around it but I might be wrong. (I'll be honest I've started using MFT too so i'm using the CL less currently).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I will ask sigma support. I hope they won t just have a basic support behavior saying : pLse update to last level of FW without knowing if it resolve it or not :(
As much as a M8 could make sense for the CCD sensor, a Nikon Z6 with its thin sensor stack filter seems to make more sense than the CL. It’s cheaper used, FF and with so much more into it. Curious to see a review of your M240 vs Z6. 🙂
Thanks, Matt since reading your M8 review and then this video I have been doing a little research and this CL has got me at the point of purchasing this camera. Decisions decisions.
Maybe. It’s at the top end. The lens alone used to cost £1k. Still a great camera. I just got the M10 but I’ll do a M10 + CL combo video when I get time. (For similar money you can get SL2-a and maybe M10, depending on your needs etc.
I am dreaming of an M mount CL, or an M body (so FF) with EVF instead of a rangefinder (I still like a rangefinder, but more choice is better). I already have a Fuji Xpro 3 so no need the actual CL...
AcidicDelusion I would pick the CL purely for the size and fact it offers so much more being an interchangeable lens system. Note. I don’t own a Q but I tested one from Leica for a weekend. (See www.MrLeica.Com blog write up and photos).
I own a Leica TL2 since 2 years now and I’m wondering if l will go for the CL soon, for its better EVF than the visoflex is. Do you see any difference in image quality between the 2? By the way I subscribed !
Hi Jorge, if you like film but don’t want to develop it get the M9. If you prefer smooth modern high iso high dynamic range fast small camera get CL. Both have their place so it depends on your taste.
How about the CL vs m8? I’m currently using the summaron 35 3.5, how would you compare these two cameras with their advantages and disadvantages (mostly shoot monochrome street snapshots)? Should I keep the CL and save some money to get a m10 or trade the CL for a m8? Thanks.
Chi Yan Lau they are complete opposites. Watch the M8 video. M8 is slow noisy, CL is fast more quiet, M8 low dynamic range low high ISO, CL is opposite. M8 photos have more character/ more film like. See video for example images.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'm thinking of buying a CL, but I'm undecided between the CL a Q and the D Lux 7. I know that the Q is much better, but I'm worried about being stuck with a single focal length, even more so being a 28mm, which seems to me unsuitable for Portrait. Despite having the smallest sensor, the D Lux 7 seems very interesting to me, mainly because it has a good lens and image stabilization (which the CL doesn't have). But I have some doubts about the image quality of a 4/3 sensor. What is your opinion about it?
you didn't mention size and weight, one of the best if not THE BEST small camera you can buy, even today. Shame Leica isn't capitalized well enough to continue the CL line, still my favorite travel camera, by far.
Thanks Anne, I think I'd used the camera for so long the size was just normal to me! I mention the size in lots of the other videos made after.
I shoot Fujifilm Panasonic and the Leica CL I REALLY love the Leica. Don't know for sure why, but I know I do. Great results.
Thanks Roger, great. Yes I still love my CL. I still have it.
I remember last year you made a video comparing CL vs M240 and that push me on my decision to buy the CL and I still do not regret it :)
Jerome Arnould thanks Jerome! I better watch what I say in future then haha :) Thanks for letting me know, it’s nice to hear it!
I recently ended up buying the CL because of this video. And I love it. Thank you for the awesome detailed comparison. I've never enjoyed using a camera so much!
Thank you for your kind feedback! I will do some more CL videos in the future as I love mine too!
What was your work around for audio
Thank you for the feedback! :) I have a few Fujifilm videos but they are film bodies! :)
I recently bought a secondhand CL after ditching my Lumix S5. It’s changed my photography.
Hi John, great to hear that you enjoy the CL. I have both those mentioned cameras and yes the CL is much nicer to use.
Your channel is fantastic. It is like watching a gripping series where no detail is missed and the story build up is precise. You are sharing such wonderful information without unnecessary distractions in the story telling. It much like the Leica. Thank you.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
what a fantastic review Matt!
Thanks and agreed. See the last 2 videos, I used the CL in New York
I have to confess, You got me to click because of the thumbnail. Buttt, I really appreciated the review of the CL. A little old now in 2024, but worth a look.
Yes still a great camera, I still use mine!
portrait results are outstanding! both color and bw.
all compositions, bw 'lines',
sharpness / detail / (depth) of the eyes.
The color and blur are all satisfying.
Thanks! that’s what 10yrs of constant model photos does I guess but I appreciate your kind words 🙏🏻
Matt. That’s the best review on any Leica camera. I just watched your 2020 review of the Leica CL. So informative and without the ego or hype or nonsense of many other people who do Leica reviews. Adrian
Thanks Adrian! Just my 2p worth! Great little camera although currently I’m using the SL more.
Fran D thanks Fran, yes the CL is very under rated I think!
Thinking of getting
an M 75mm f/1.5 manual as the telephoto.
Thanks! Yes lots of nice lens options for the CL :) See the 75mm 1.5 video - great lens!
Hello Matt, at first "Best Wishes for 2022" and thanks for your posts. I would like you to clarify something: looking to the Internet, I'm not able to know if the Leica CL is having or not the low-pass filter... If it's having, does it compromise the image quality ? Chris
Hi Chris, the CL has no low pass filter as I understand and I like the images.
i always appreciate your honest reviews and advise Matt... keep it up bro!
Thanks Banj! I appreciate your support!
Thanks Marty! Great to hear you enjoy the CL too! :) I've done more CL videos if you ever want to binge watch ha :)
They had a 18mm lens too?
I use the Leica CL for two and a half years now with the 23mm Summicron TL f2.0 and the 60mm Elmarit TL f2.8 macro. Outstanding image quality and a lot of fun to work with because I hardly notice the camera while shooting. I also bought a 'Novoflex' adapter ring for my 5 Pentax ltd. prime lenses. They also work very well on this camera, although manual focus only, for me no problem. Nice camera and lens round up with nice images. Thank You
Takuan thank you. Sounds a great setup. I use M le ads as I already owned them but I might try the 23mm lens when I get chance.
Outstanding review Matt. Extremely helpful. You are an amazing photographer. Your images are stunning.

this sounds like an excellent option for street photography - i would put my 5 lens 50mm on it - the cropped sensor is making me hesitate though - thoughts?
Yes it depends more on your lenses. If you are ok with 1.5 crop on all existing lenses then it's a great camera.
Thanks Christine! Fingers crossed you can swap it! If you like using your phone get the 18mm pancake lens for the CL. You will love the size! :)

Thanks, if I get one to test I will be sure to share my results/ thoughts.
Thanks Randolph. Yes I appreciate the CL and SL for my nine perfect eyesight. I love the SL I use now so the CL is more as a backup.
Hi Matt, in your video we see you use CL for portraits with M lenses. Do you use any L lenses too? Thanks.

Hi Wilfred, yes the CL is excellent. It's especially nice to use paired with smaller lenses.

Thanks.

Why not a Sony A7 III instead of a Leica CL? Full-frame, you can also customize buttons for magnification, it's cheaper, has in-body stabilization and battery allows triple the shots.
I generally don’t like digital sensors but Leica seem Ok. Normally they look to digital for me.

Very informative, as usual. How does the dynamic range of the CL compare with that of the Fuji cameras, for example the XT-3? Thanks
Hi Steve, you might need to compare images to Fuji images but I would expect it to be similar to the latest Fuji cameras. To my eyes the CL DR is similar to the Leica SL/SL2, M10, Lumix S5.. .and better than my M240 in that regard.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks
The crop factor does not affect the perspective though, so the face distortion from using a 35mm on APS-C is not the same as using a 50mm on a full-frame.
Thanks i've never tested exactly side by side
Do this test on your side : 2 pictures same distance one at 21 , one at 50, then enlarge /zoom the picture taken with 21 (like a crop ) you will have the same perspective ;)
your photos are amazing matt! dose this camera have ibis?
It's focal equivalent is
28-75mm at f2.8, what makes it interesting is its small size yet has autofocus. I would like if you can get your
hands on one to do a review. This is another thing the CL could do vs. a rangefinder, except the Tri Elmar which
mimics a zoom but you need an extra VF
Thanks, i've not used any Sigma lenses yet but I would like to try a few. I will see what I can do next year. If I can grow the channel it should give me more access to more gear to test.
I am using only Sigma lenses on my CL and in particular the 18-50 zoom. The two prime I have are the lenses I prefer (90mm and 35mm f2) but the zoom is great for travel and convenience reason. Great image quality.
Very helpful. Thank you
Thanks no problem!
I still keep mine for travel/ backup but now use the SL.
..and the CL will add the crop factor to your lenses remember 1.5x FL
December 2021, still love my CL.
Great to hear Anne! I will do a follow up video for mine soon (ish)
Hello, just to say that a Leica M8 is around 800€ here in France... not 1700€ as you mention. I sold mine 1200 because it was in mint condition.
1700€ is more the price of an M9
Sounds like great price to buy and sell!
Matt, at 13:00 you mention how what you see is what you get (exposure-wise) in the EVF on the Leica Cl. This is certainly true for the L-mount lens but does it also apply when one uses an M lens via the Leica M-Adapter L, too?
Hello yes any lens on any mirrorless camera as far as I know. I use various lenses on the CL and all work the same - M, R, LTM..Nikon,..

LJS S. No problem 👍🏻

How does it focus with the Sigma lenses? As fast as on other mounts like Canon and Sony (tracking aside)?
I might not be the best person to ask as I prefer manual focus glass but if you see my 2 sigma lens vids they were fine on CL. No different to on SL from memory.
Nice review but great photographs, I like the compositions!
Thanks Fabrizio! I’m a photographer not a speaker so I’ll take that thanks! :)
Thank you. Very informative.
Thank you Stavros!
Hi Matt. I read that the CL is being discontinued so Leica can focus on full frame. Speculation I know but could we see a similar compact size full frame camera from Leica in the future?
Yes I’ve heard the same. Not sure they’ll do a FF version as that would kill there SL line.
Thanks for the excellent review! I really adore this little camera. Maybe one day... if I may give you a minor input on your videos: maybe try lowering your tripod a little bit, so we don’t have the feeling of looking down on you :) Thanks for your work!

Hi Matt. I suppose you may have answered this elsewhere. Apart from TL 18mm, which TL lenses would do well on SL or Panasonic S5?
Hello, yes I did a full video on the 18mm. That wins for best size. Other than that I would avoid TL lenses for SL/S5 as you only get half the MP with a APS-C lens (see it in the recent 28mm shoot out video- you will see the difference in size). I use Leica M and R lenses mostly but if you want AF you can check out other L mount lenses. SL lenses are probably the best but you pay higher price.

Awesome review, probably one of the best, like the Leica CL camera simple yet stunning. Could I fit a Nikon 300 mm 2.8 lens to this tiny camera?
Thanks Tashi! Yes you can. I would hold the setup by the lens though so not to stress the lens mount. (I have a 200 f2 Nikkor!) :) Just remember the crop factor will give you a 450mm which is probably what you are planning anyway. I use Nikon lenses on my CL a lot.

If you want to keep more money in your pocket and in the bank, then buy a Sony 6000, 6100, 6300, 6400, 6500 or 6600 camera, there are tons of very good to exellent lens options from different brands to choose from :) Or go for a Sony A7 series camera in fullformat 36x24 sensor.
Thanks, I'm mostly into my film cameras so the digital cameras I have do most of what I need. Thanks for info though!
Marc Chan thanks Marc! I’m sure the CL2 is in the pipeline! :)
You are a great photographer
Thanks Jon! Very kind.
You can see weekly videos on Patreon of me using the CL with various lenses on model shoots (BTS video etc) - www.patreon.com/mrleicacom
I think you would take the CL if want a light setup or crop factor added to your lenses then SL for shallow DOF and FF look. 2 bodies will gives every lens you have 2 different uses/ focal lengths.
How long has the CL been out for? Reason being are we expecting a CL2?
Nov17 so yes agreed we might see a CL2 later this year! :)

Thanks for these reviews. Are there any focusing limitations with the 50mm DR on the CL?
