Well chose. The CL is still my favorite camera, especially for travel. Imho the best camera Leica ever made. And yes, I wish it was full frame, but nevertheless it delivers really top image quality
I wanted an autofocus camera to pair with my M11. I first bought a Q2 but really struggled only having a 28mm lens. So I sold it and bought a CL and man do I love that camera. Compact, light, autofocus, interchangeable lenses and Leica build quality and image quality. It’s a shame they discontinued the line but its still a fantastic camera today.
Just came back from a trip to a European region which is the opposite of Vegas, somewhat dreamy, beautiful rolling hills, everything is green, small towns with few people. My main setup: Leica CL with the 23 Summicron. After reviewing the images I again reached the solution that this combo simply delivers, and I frankly don‘t need much else. Does‘t mean that I am not tempted by all these other wonderful toys … 😊
I once owned a CL, but ‘upgraded’ to a Q2. While i love the q2 for street work, i often crave a 50 focal length, and had a trip planned that required longer reach. After renting Olympus, Fuji, leica sl2, I re explored the CL and fell in love all over again. I ended up buying a used CL along with every CL lens - and am off the charts happy. While shooting a prime usually, i went whale watching with the 55-135 zoom, and man, was this a perfect lens for the small body of the CL. I am so happy again, loving the build quality, optical quality across my focal lengths, as well as all the other attributes of the CL i always loved. Compact, small, wonderful build quality, and 24mp is all i need. So happy to see your ‘recent’ post on the CL - truly a wonderful experience.
I bought the CL December 2017 when it came out. I'll never sell it. Image quality and handling from this camera is superb. Best for street and travel photography and smokes every Fuji X Trans sensor camera.
Very much enjoyed my CL with Zeiss ZM glass. It was a great backup to my 24MP SL(601). Alas, I sold it to a gal in Cali. It really is the perfect EDC with the same modern 3-button controls and menus as the M-10 and SL2 cameras.
I have the CL’s cousin, the TL2, and all these years later it still puts out outstanding images in comparison to what’s currently available on the market. I recently added the TL Summilux 35mm 1.4 lens and wow…what a lens. The 23mm Summicron TL is fantastic in its own right, but this Summilux TL is an entire league of its own. It’s sort of a shame that the CL-T cameras don’t get the credit they deserve. Although this could be a good thing because it allows for us to enjoy these cameras and lenses more to ourselves 😊
I love my CL for all the reasons you mentioned, I even put some black tape over the red dot and it looks like a cheap p&s rig. It’s so tiny compared to my SL2, obviously it’s not an SL2 but for some (small) reason it seems to get more use when I travel 😂. Looks like your trip was a blast, hopefully see you back in California soon. Cheers mate!
In the past I have owned the M3, M4, M6TTL, and M262. All great cameras. I currently have a IIIF RDST, Q2M and the CL. I think of all of these my favorite is still the CL, not only for its haptics and travel applications but also for the wonderful image quality with both the native lenses and M lenses. As far as I'm concerned it is a forever camera.
I have a CL and most of the TL Leica lenses. I purchased an SL2 body with the intention of “upgrading to full frame” and using my TL lenses until I could afford said full frame Leica SL lenses. I never really liked the SL2, it just didn’t feel right or sound right. I sold the SL2 before ever purchasing any SL lenses and don’t regret it one single bit. Unfortunately I made the mistake of picking up a M10-R into my hands and taking one shot through a 35mm summilux ! Thousands of dollars later I now have an M system to go with my CL. The systems compliment each other nicely in my opinion, sometimes the auto focus is absolutely necessary, most times it is not. My only gripe with the CL is the lowlight performance, its not great for night street photography, if that’s your thing, then any of the Q’s would work.
Thanks Tony! Another viewer enjoys the same setup as you! Yes I took the Q for night shots but didn't use it once. (See the new blog linked under the video)
Interesting video. I visited Vegas in early June with the CL along with the little Elmarit-TL 1:2.8/18. and light weight. Thanks for the great content.
I bought two Leica CLs when the Q3 was announced and folks were tossing them in the trash (figuratively) for fund$. With Voigtlander lenses on these guys my street camera search is over. Hey, my Sony FF cameras are my work horses, but these CLs are always with me on trips and the street. Thanks Q3.
About 6 months ago I was wanting to replace my old/reliable Nikon V1. I wanted to get back in pure manual operation with manual focus lens. I was looking at Nikon V6's then I stumbled upon Matt's RUclips page and his review of the CL. About 3 months ago I bought a used mint CL with the Leica M -> L adapter from a Leica forum member. I love the CL with vintage style manual lens. I set the camera up via Matt's RUclips settings. The CL is really perfect as a CL version II would need to be Full-Frame but then it would not be a CL ! A camera is only as good as the one you want to always walk out of the door with. If I was a portrait photographer like Matt I would get the SL as well. The images from the CL are so realistic as they always put a smile on my face.
Thanks for the kind words and congrats on your CL! Yes I use the SL for most portraits but the CL is so nice for travel. I'm happy you are enjoying yours too!
I've had the Q and Q2 both great. I now have a CL (and other cameras) Don't understand your comments about the biggest disadvantages being it's now discontinued and APSC. What's difference does it make now it's discontinued? Does it still take pictures? It was apsc when you bought it right? Every lens you bought for it 'now' has a different focal length? Isn't the focal length of the lenses the same as when you bought them?
Congrats on your CL. Discontinued - I mean some people don't like to buy into a line of cameras that's finished. APS-C - yes when I bought it I used my 35mm f1.2 lens a lot on it to give me 50mm. Since then I've acquired a lot of 50s so those are now all longer. I mean if it was FF it would be a huge hit but if you use it as it is then just work around the crop factor. I guess all the Fuji guys have to live with APS-C so it is possible but once you go to FF it's hard to go back IF you use vintage glass with nice bokeh edges. Of course if you use modern glass and or stop down or only care about the centre then the CL is fantastic. I still keep and rate the CL but that's why I mention the points I do.
Responding to a six month post, but I feel compelled to add this. I sold my CL kit a while back (keeping two lenses to use on my SL2) and regretted it soon after. I no longer shoot film, and I need autofocus due to my eyesight issues, so I don't use manual focus lenses like Matt, but the CL was still an amazing camera to use. I also have a Q3... But here's the thing: Though fortunate enough to have those two Leicas, the CL was different and worth every penny. So, after wrestling with the decision, I bought a used one recently and have zero regrets. It fills an important "niche" for me, and I find that I take it with me more than the Q3, which is brilliant, but... Thanks for all your videos. I love your work and the valuable information you provide us here on RUclips.
Survived Vegas! Stayed away from the tables. I have an APS-C and like it. It is just another format. It "makes me" closer. Thanks for another good vid and a safe home to you.
Great videos Matt! How would you consider the CL now in 2024? I'm currently switching from Fujifilm to Lumix S5 cameras for professional work, but I'm considering a Leica CL as a "B-cam" for things like shutter-drag dancefloor photos, moments where I need a little more reach, as well as generally documenting holidays and family life with a lighter camera, etc. It's tempting to go for the CL... or perhaps save up for an M262 (I enjoy manual lenses)
I would be careful doing this. Your B cam will become your A cam :) .. I bought as a B cam to my M240 and it instantly was my A cam for the next 2+ yrs. I still use it in 2024
Found your channel... wanted a Leica and the CL is the entry sweet spot. Was Canon / Nikon and for years now Fuji. Xt 1 till XT 3 with several lenses. Got the Fuji X100V to test fixed lens... loved it and sold it for the CL... now got the CL with the kit lens 18-56 now got the 23 F2. eyeing for the 18mm for a mini Q set up :) love you channel great photography. keep up the great work :)
Matt, I read somewhere that some m lenses protrude inside the cl body and hit the plastic that surrounds the sensor. Have you ever experienced that? If yes, what lens was it?
Hi, no that’s not true. Some wide lenses with large rear optics won’t fit many cameras including the CL but this is uncommon. Jupiter 12 is the most known example. It won’t fit the SL either. Assume the CL works with most lenses.
Thank you so much Matt, I think it is mostly the case with collapsible lenses and some other exceptions like the leica super angulon 21mm f4. I'm glad it's so rare. Thanks once again, keep inspiring! @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
I first bought the CL, then I added the Q2. I always travel carrying these two cameras, CL with APO-Vario-Elmar-TL 55-135. I am thinking of adding the Q3 for on-camera charging.
Actually got a CL from MPB and really, really like it. Shot fujifilm X for some years, so I'm not super stuck on full-frame, but I realized after having it for a week that if I kept it I would end up buying another set of lenses basically just for that camera. I decided I should just stick with the Q2 for my "small kit". For 35mm FOV my Q2 camera is still "better" (ie larger sensor area) than aps-c. And, another funny thing is that on aps-c my favorite focal length is 28mm, and the Q2 has exactly that. I just wish I could pull up aps-c frame lines in the finder on my Q2 :(
Matt , I have the CL and the M10-R. Both are great cameras. When I need very wide angles, I grab the CL and the 11-23. I use the M10 because I like a rangefinder and it forces me to slow down. I like the CL because of the EVF, controls and ergonomics. I was at the Houston 1940 Air Terminal museum today and photographed a Lockheed Loadstar with the terminal in the background using the CL and the M10-R. Image quality from both cameras was great. The better shot was with the CL because of the wider FOV with the 11-23 than with the Elmarit-M 24
Thanks Jay, nice! Yes if you are stopping a FF camera down anyway the APS-C Leicas are excellent. Smart move using the 11-23, sounds like a great shoot!
Using my CL with the stellar APO Vario Elmar TL 55-135, Vario Elmar TL 18-56 and the Elmarit-TL 1:2.8/18 is and has been for years an absolute blast. I even shoot full auto, because I looooove the out of the camera look the best. I wouldn't change a single thing!
I too really enjoy the digital CL for travel and street photography. I hope Leica decides to bring a replacement someday. Their discontinued X series is even smaller. I'd love to see a successor to those as well but I doubt either will be made.
I specifically bought the CL in 2019 after traveling with a 1936 Leica III and loving the small form factor (after years with dSLRs). The CL really felt like a modern evolution of the Barnack.
After your last video you answered a comment of mine and suggested a CL. I’d already considered getting one but did a bit more research. On Thursday I was past a major camera store in Bangkok and I saw a CL in their Leica display, brand new. This one for some reason they insisted on selling paired with a Leica 1i8-55 lens which I didn’t want. They checked stock and was surprised to see they had another but body only. I got a deal of equivalent of £1650. I’ve paired it with a couple of Sigma lenses. I will get out this weekend and see how it performs
If Leica would re release the CL I would jump right in. Own both M11 and Q3 but having a camera with AF, interchangeable lens it’s a plus for travel. I been leaving my Q3 behind and taking my Sony A6400 with some the sigma 18-50 f2.8 as my travel backup waking around camera.
I bought the Cl because of its size and performance. The 23mm Summicron gives amazing results, nobody notices it is not a full frame camera even when I enlarge the image. Love my CL. I use it professionally for product images with the APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60. It looks like a cheap bridge zoom camera when i take it out! Also, your fault i bought it!
I always enjoy your videos, thanks! Despite buying my son a Q (which he adores), I’m a Nikon fan so I’d love to see you test a Z50 if you get time? Compared to the CL it is a spit heavier and is only 21Mpix (not 24) otherwise I’d suggest it wins in all other areas, especially the nice grip...
Unless you’re a bird photographer the answer to that question is always “small camera. Small lenses”. I had a friend who loved the CL. Great colors and B&W.
agreed mate something to be admired about long term projects. I love shooting landscapes, but the images I look back on with with most pride are the people pictures. Like the look of that CL Matt, still loving the Q2 tho'. I recently got a Zorki 4, love it to bits even with a big damn light leak, it's being fixed at the moment can't wait for it's return, although I now fancy a wee barnack haha, it never ends. @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
U hv deffo got me interested in the Leica CL …. I’d really like a small inconspicuous (Leica) camera; esply if it is capable of making images anywhere near yours… 👍👍
a bit different thought here. I love cl and got it years ago. I bought Q3 this year, and it soon replaced all my previous cameras, including cl. I tried to carry multiple cameras when I travel, and it didn't end well. I soon lost in changing cameras and lenses. That's why I found the high-resolution and digi crop extremely useful. Instead, I carry 2 flash lights (SF60 and SF40, incl sfc1). I love Q3 so much, but it may only work for me. 28 35 50 focal lengths are enough for me, and the crop is acceptable in my shooting. I think this is the "ultimate" camera for me.
Great, it's always nice to find a camera that suits our particular shooting style. Yes for those that don't need shallow DOF and are happy to crop the Q3 is a great option. (I love playing with lenses too much to ever consider the Q2 or Q3. (My Q I use for occasional weddings).
Great review. I just bought a D-LUX 7 as a back-up for my M-P240. My Q is on sale now, because I feel too limited with the fixed lens. BTW, the Q is a great camera for those, who can live with a 28 mm only. Keep on rolling.
Ive kept my CL over M240 and SL2-S as it still gives the enigmatic Leica look but I get best results with first generation bayonet mount Voigtlander M lenses (eg. 12/5.6, 15/4.5, 25/4, 40/1.4). I've resisted the ultra small 28 and 40 you have here as I find them too soft, feel the punch of the CL sensor is a bit lost on those more modern lenses. Thanks for covering Viva Leica CL!
Thanks Samuel, yes I think the CL offers great bang for the buck these days. It's interesting you prefer the older lenses. I feature the older 21/4 soon so stay tuned (not on your list but the same series).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks for your reply Matt, yes I've tried the 21 and 28mm Voigtlander Vintage line lenses which were nice but strangely for a 'Vintage' label I still found them a bit modern and sharp. Like you say, its exciting times though...
Matt, very nice video highlighting the virtues of a terrific little camera that I wish LeicaI hadn’t discontinued. I had a CL and gave it to someone (plus a few Leica TL lenses: 18 mm f/2.8, 18-56 zoom, + Macro 60 mm f/2.8). I got another, all the TL lenses, and three adapters (Leica M to L and R to L, and a Novoflex Nikon F to L). The CL looks quite interesting with my used Leica Super Elmar-R 15 mm f/3.5 on it. The CL was of course never going to replace Nikon or Canon full-frame cameras for super telephoto applications (i.e., fast action sports or wildlife). However, its 24 MP sensor and compact nature makes the camera good enough for most folk’s use and a perfect travel companion. The EVF is not as good as that on the SL2, but it’s certainly good enough. The camera feels very good in my hands (I often use the Leica CL handgrip too) and I love the simplicity of its buttons and menu system. I’ll be getting another CL this year as a backup. I passed up a Paul Smith edition unit in Wetzlar about a year and a half ago. However, that fun look has since 😮grown on me.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Weather permitting, I’ll be photographing the 8 April 2024 total Solar eclipse. I’ll be using the following kit: - Leica SL2 on an Astro-Physics 160 mm f/7.5 apo refractor (with a field flattener). - Leica CL + Leica L 100-400 zoom lens (the crop sensor will allow me to use this lens where it operates better, i.e., away from the extreme end of the range) - Leica M-11 + APO Telyt-M 135 mm f/3.4. The first two will be atop a Takahashi EM-200 Temma2 German equatorial mount. The M11 will be on an ultra-portable iOptron Sky Guider Pro German equatorial mount.
I waited in hope Leica would release a CL2 - it would have been perfect for me. I gave up assuming they'd ever release one and bought an X-T5. I could buy a used CL but the tech is quite old and I wanted new tech. If they released a CL2 I'd sell the Fuji tomorrow.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I suspect Leica are aloof (arrogant?) enough to think they know what their customers desire. Fuji are selling a lot of APS-C cameras and the price difference between a high end Fuji and a CL style Leica would be shallow enough to have some people 'upgrading'. Perhaps their 'marque' status is more important to them than high sales. Maybe you could convince them, Mr Leica! :)
Excellent and timely video Matt, thanks. Im in a bit of a quandary - I have a trip to Sydney coming up again, and I will have no more than half a day free time to pack in some shots. What to take ? Has to be small, light and bombproof ... 1 lens only ... enough "battery" to not die on the first shoot ... and decent enough output to be worth spending the time shooting on. Half a day only also means there is a cap on spending for new kit as well. Tossing up between the M3 + half a dozen rolls of film, or my ratty Pentax K3 with a manual focus film lens (which is a pretty decent street shooter setup) I don't shoot for clinical accuracy and perfect images - I want 1930s style propaganda posters. Both of the above suit my style. "Why not both ?" is not a choice - because "why not both" quickly escalates into a whole backpack full of "options", and no time to just shoot. 1 Camera, 1 lens, 1 format .... lets go
Just curious, what do you think about the Leica T/TL/TL2 cameras. I watched your videos about CL/TL lens and like your comments about the CL camera. But for T/TL/TL2 camera, other RUclipsrs seem to have split opinions other than the universal appreciation of its unibody. What do you think? Thanks.
Hello, I went for the CL as I need a viewfinder. Those without seem more like phone photography for me. They are even smaller though and will give similar photos.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks a lot for your reply. Love your channel, very honest opinions and very useful techniques/tips. You inspired my love for Leica.
I'm thinking about getting a CL but what does it mean in realistic terms when Leica will no longer support the model in the future being a discontinued series? Firmware updates presumably will no longer be available but what does that mean for it's longevity and maintenance? Thanks in advance!!
I rarely remember to do firmware updates do that doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I’m sure you can still get them repaired/ serviced for a few years to come
great video as usual Matt, been thinking for a long time now i need a small Leica digital compact and the leica CL looks great for street photography , i have a Leica V-LUX 5 ,its a great camera but its quite chunky to take out with me all the time., so a camera like the CL would suit me......
Can you please do a review on the new voigtlander 28mm color skopar that was briefly featured in this episode? waiting on a solid review before I make a purchase between an ultron and the skopar!
Ok let’s put it this way, I’ve owned T, Tl,TL2, Q,SL, lumix S m1 and S5m2 + others . I still have and carry the CL and greatly miss the TL2. More recently using the Ricoh gr3 as well. Leica has made a mistake by not furthering it’s APSC line. Large cameras are not the norm anymore, they suck to travel with because they are more of burden to carry/ pack and those in the moment snap shots you just don’t bother taking after a while because of the hassle factor. For me the Cl and Tl cameras have given me fantastic images because of what they are, they allow more access. And yes I shoot the CL in professional shoots not just travel, editorial and documentary Currently I’m in France, and walking the CL with 20-60 lumix lens along with 11-23, a super versatile set up. This allows for ultra wide to 90 mm or so. The gr3 is on a wrist strap in my hand always ready, the 28 is my favorite all rounder. RUclipsrs talk about being discreet with a small camera and that’s true but to me to be most discreet use your cell phone, everyone has one. Also let’s get real fast lenses are great for certain purposes they are tools, but massive bokeh is not needed in every photo, it doesn’t to me look more professional and certainly not artistic. F2 f2.8 keeps things smaller lighter and the camera’s iso can make up the difference in lower light these days To this end,, the lighter smaller the camera is its better for me.
Great! Yes I love a small setup too. I have that 20-60 kit lens and yes it's so light (and plastic) it works quite well on the CL for a zoom. I tend to shoot small MF primes but we both enjoy the same small cameras.
I just picked up a like a CL because I couldn’t decide between the SL or SL2. I previously had a Q and expected to be getting a Q2 someday, but an M10m and M10R took the budget. I really wanted something smaller than the Ms & Q, and I’ve achieved it with the CL. I’m very happy so far with my choice. I’ll never buy an L lens, just adapt Ms.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I’m taking it out on a first trip in a few days. Not long or important enough to bring the m10s and the too many I’ve purchased. It’ll be the CL with a 35 2.5 Color Skopar, 50 Jupiter-8, and i just picked up the 18 Elmarit TL. 28, 52, 75- I’m good and it all fits in ⅓ of my smallest peak sling.
Hi, I am interested in the CL. I am looking for a small compact camera to compliment my M11. Something I can always have around when out and about without worrying too much about it or feeling the weight. Whilst I’ve always had Leica Ms for my main camera for a compact option I’ve had a series of „unsatisfying“ cameras. Most recently I had a couple Fuji X100 cameras (1 x 100F and 2 x 100Vs) but they kept failing quite quickly (I always got refunds). Also I just didn’t get on with the Fuji system. Regardless of how many people love them after a Leica M it feels like operating a computer. I also had a Ricoh GR ii, which I didnt like much either and later sold. However the Ricoh despite being fiddly to use had one great feature - Snap or preset focus mode. This made it really good for „shoot from the hip“ street photography. Now I thought about getting another GR and I know the Gr iii is supposed to be much better. But still, apart from this focus feature, I really didn‘t like using it. So would the Leica CL fit my needs? Can you pre set the focus with a TL lens and use the zone method? What if you fit a manual focus lens? I guess in this case you can zone focus. How well does this work? Thanks
You drank the Leica Kool-Aid. You can't go back! Just tested this. Set focus in manual mode at F2 so its shallow DOF and can see fine focus. .Turn camera off. Turn back on. Yes the lens stays in the same position and remains where you left it. If you can live without the DOF markings then yes, you can zone focus!
@@yopuivideo Hey thanks for trying this! Much appreciated. Does the CL have any visual representation of DoF on the screen? Either the Fuji or the GR had this (maybe both, I don’t remember).
Sadly I part exchanged my CL against a used SL2 which is stupendous but too heavy to carry as far as the CL, which really is a great travel camera.. I had slightly damaged the CL cosmetically and got a low but fair price for it, and I am missing it badly.
Glad you had fun in the US, or so it seems! I wish I could've flew out to vegas for a workshop, that would have been great! Hahaha, I also see that you have experienced the Liquid Death. First time I saw one of those was my camera operator having a can at 9am in the morning and I thought she started drinking early! I love Fremont much better than the main strip, it was the old vegas charm what I was looking for. When I went to Vegas for NAB almost 10 years ago with a few of my production buddies, I loved it so much that my director friend wrote a script at the hotel at night, and the next day I cast a model and we filmed a short film with a steadicam on Fremont (a full size steadicam, not a gimbal), no one turn an eye to stop us, no one spike camera for the 6-7 hours that we filmed there that afternoon; it was so much sensory overload, and it detract attention from the camera. Side note, audio in the video might be clipping or compressed too hard. It is not bad, but thought I will bring that to your attention ;-)
Thanks Rex! A few people want me to do workshops in the US. See the latest MrLeica.com blog post. I'll try to come out to do more. Liquid Death - yes! I thought he was on the beer too haha. Great story around Fremont. I was shooting film too so hopefully I can make a video on that. Thanks about the audio. The podcast (Blue Yeti) seems better than my Rode Wireless Go II mics for sound quality, now I just need to learn how to post-process audio! I just increase/decrease the levels so it looks mostly in the yellow and no red (I thought) as some of my early videos are too quiet.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Please do! I am overdue for an UK trip to visit my cousin, so who knows, we might cross path sooner than later. The Yeti has a larger diaphragm, so it is receiving more air than the Go II; I am not a big fan of the Go DAC (digital to analog convertor), but for something quick on the run, it is not a bad option. Most certainly, audio quality changed drastically, since about two months ago! At first, I almost miss the old Matt voice lol Now I am used to it, it is a very welcoming changed.
@@rexypoooo thanks for the feedback, yes I’m being jumping between the mics and I moved house so setup (room spec changed - size, echo etc) and yes hope to catch you soon!
Hi, I do monthly whats in my bag videos on Patreon. There must be over 24 episodes on there from various trips to suit different needs. Check them out.
OK Matt, I love your stuff always.. But the biggest take away from this video is the discovery of John Free. HOLY CRAP!!!!! He's like the Fred Dibnah of photography.
The only thing holding me back from a CL, is my beloved Sony RX1, which gets the most use over past 10 years, and is always with me when SL2-S too much to carry. I expect the CL would be more a pleasure to use, but hard to give up the full frame RX1 with that fantastic 35mm Zeiss f2.
Thanks Dave, yes I think if and when you want to use other focal lengths, that could be an excuse to get the CL. (I'm not so good with fixed lens cameras as I like to experiment with lots of optics for different character!)
Matt because I follow you I viewed your video non the Leica CL with the 18mm Elmarit 2.8. I have a CL too, with several lenses, but somehow I never knew about the ELmarit TL. So Ebay had a 4 AM auction that had zero bids on a never used lens. I made sure I bid high because I new the "Lurkers" like me who bid with 15 seconds left had to be considered. When the auction ended , low and behold there were 4 other biders and I won the lens for $400. MPB and KEH both have used EX condition for over $600, so I got a bit of a bargain for losing a couple hours sleep.
I hope Leica makes a updated CL Fuji is doing well with their APSC cameras and the CL with an updated sensor with IBIS, PD tracking and better high ISO would do real well in L mount. Sigma makes many small contemporary C lenses for APSc.
Thanks for the feedback and sorry it was a bad experience. This is from last year so the newer videos probably sound different. (I did have some videos with worse than normal audio after moving to a small apartment).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt, I watched a few of the newer ones too. The style is the same, but the clipping is much less. Also, great content, this should always trump delivery. Thanks for creating.
Thanks, I prefer "real" lenses, that's why I tend not to use P&S cameras (BUT I know many love the GR cameras) (The GR is too close to iPhone photography for me I think.. too easy!)

Haha, I didn't miss anything, trust me lol! :) Yes it was too warm but showed what the city offers. The bags I use are linked below the video. I've done a video on them before but i'll likely do another as I have a new addition to the "system" that I use. They're great!

The CL is a great walk around camera. The pictures it delivers are stunning.
Thanks, yes I think so!
Well chose. The CL is still my favorite camera, especially for travel. Imho the best camera Leica ever made. And yes, I wish it was full frame, but nevertheless it delivers really top image quality
Thanks Steve! I'm happy to see so much appreciation for the CL in the comments!
I love my CL. I wish they would continue the apsc l-mount
Maybe Lumix will pick up the APSC route but FF are getting so small now too..
Great! I'm glad you found the CL. Yes it's sad they stopped the CL line but hopefully there will be small camera collab in the future.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComdo u have any info on any upcoming cl esque camera from leica? Plz say yes 😅
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom That would be nice.
Great stuff! Yes agreed the CL works great for travel photos.
Looks like you're having a wonderful time! I'm so glad. I love my Leica CL. I always enjoy your very informative videos, thanks! 📷
Thanks Lucy! Yes it was fun
Great story! I'm glad you managed to get a used one and found a system that suits you. Yes I love mine for these types of trips.
I have 2 Cls My wife took the first one. She used it once and never gave it back. I love the Barnack form factor.
I bought the CL December 2017 when it came out. I'll never sell it. Image quality and handling from this camera is superb. Best for street and travel photography and smokes every Fuji X Trans sensor camera.
Yes great camera! I just got the M10 for a FF setup but I still like the little CL
Very much enjoyed my CL with Zeiss ZM glass. It was a great backup to my 24MP SL(601). Alas, I sold it to a gal in Cali. It really is the perfect EDC with the same modern 3-button controls and menus as the M-10 and SL2 cameras.
Thanks! Yes I use the CL as my SL backup too (I'm doing that next week).. and yes the 3 button layout makes everything very familiar.
Matt, Still love my CL and those amazing lenses. Shame on you Leica! for discontinuing this terrific camera.
Thanks! Yes it's so good for these situations ..agree a shame
Great! Yes the 35 is the 50 Lux for the TL cameras 👌🏻
Love my CL! I don't think it's possible to get better image quality with a camera that small.
Thanks Don! Yes I love my CL for stuff like this.
Thanks and great to hear you enjoy your CL too! Yes, lots of fun!
Great! Yes it pairs nicely with the iiif too
but unfortunately the M3 will outlast it by decades
And by the way, the UX is stellar and AFAIK even singular in the market. These two wheels are a game changer up to this day.
Thanks. Great minds think alike! Ah yes the 18mm gives such a light/small setup!
Watched John Free's videos so many times. The one about the tramps in the LA freight yards is unbelievable. Great photographer
Thanks David! Yes! I watched it again yesterday
Thanks Q3.
Nice! Smart move I think. Yes £1500 with lens is crazy cheap (great lens for AF shooters).
Welcome to Vegas! You are in my time zone now.
Hey thanks Wei!
Thanks and good to see some CL love! I still have mine.
Survived Vegas! Stayed away from the tables. I have an APS-C and like it. It is just another format. It "makes me" closer. Thanks for another good vid and a safe home to you.
Thank you! Yes no tables for me. I know my weaknesses!
I still use it in 2024
..and I rarely pick up my S5
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom oh brill! Thanks Matt!
Thank you! ..and I’m glad you discovered the little CL!
Hi Matt. Do the CL Lightroom presets work with Photoshop? I have the Photoshop Elements, not the full version. Thank you.
Hi Dave, no all LR presets (from anyone) only work with LR. You don't use presets with PS.. you use it to edit individual photos not batch edit
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Ah, thanks Matt, I wasn't sure. Keep up the good work!
I first bought the CL, then I added the Q2. I always travel carrying these two cameras, CL with APO-Vario-Elmar-TL 55-135. I am thinking of adding the Q3 for on-camera charging.
Great! Yes the USB-C option of the Q3 is ideal
I just wish I could pull up aps-c frame lines in the finder on my Q2 :(
Nice! Yes it’s dangerous getting into a new system.. new lenses always follow! :).
Great stuff! Yes the CL still has a lot to offer. People often overlook it.
I too really enjoy the digital CL for travel and street photography. I hope Leica decides to bring a replacement someday. Their discontinued X series is even smaller. I'd love to see a successor to those as well but I doubt either will be made.
Great! Yes we can hope!
I specifically bought the CL in 2019 after traveling with a 1936 Leica III and loving the small form factor (after years with dSLRs). The CL really felt like a modern evolution of the Barnack.
Great! The price still holds up well now.
Wow great find Jeff and good price too I think! Congrats!
Hearing your voice i wonder what really happened in Vegas !
btw thanks for sharing the info
Ha thanks! I must have a suspicious sounding voice :)
Yes! CL2.. this was part of the original video but I cut it shorter. Maybe Leica-Panasonic will bring us something in 2024
That hurt to read. The Sony is such a soulless camera whereas the Qs personality is totally different- yet you lump them together. Are you a dentist?
7:28 Yay, drawbacks! I wish every review included these -- they're often the most useful information.
Thanks James!
Haha sorry that I made you buy it but great you are enjoying it. Yes the TL lenses are great performers, no question
Thanks! If I ever get to test both I will be sure to make a video
The Leica X and X2 are also great travel and walk-around cameras.
Thanks! I must try to get one at some stage just to do a video
Unless you’re a bird photographer the answer to that question is always “small camera. Small lenses”.
I had a friend who loved the CL. Great colors and B&W.
Thanks Carlos!
Nice work Matt, and thanks for the link to to John Free, I'd seen some of his work years ago, really enjoyed this rail yard video. cheers
Thanks Paul, yes I watched it again yesterday too! I think it shows the work of a "proper" photographer.. inspiring images.
agreed mate something to be admired about long term projects.
Great content Matt!
Thanks Jon!
U hv deffo got me interested in the Leica CL …. I’d really like a small inconspicuous (Leica) camera; esply if it is capable of making images anywhere near yours… 👍👍
Thanks William, yes I like it!
a bit different thought here.
Thanks Paul! Great. Yes as I mention in the blog post below the video, I had the Q with me but I didn't use it.
Thanks John! yes I still keep my CL. The best Leica for travel and I love that I can use all lenses on it. I'll do a video vs. my M10 at some point.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I’m looking forward to that comparison.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Weather permitting, I’ll be photographing the 8 April 2024 total Solar eclipse. I’ll be using the following kit:
- Leica SL2 on an Astro-Physics 160 mm f/7.5 apo refractor (with a field flattener).
- Leica CL + Leica L 100-400 zoom lens (the crop sensor will allow me to use this lens where it operates better, i.e., away from the extreme end of the range)
- Leica M-11 + APO Telyt-M 135 mm f/3.4.
Yes I think others were waiting too. I had mentioned the idea of the CL2 in this video but I cut it out in the final edit. We can hope!
Tossing up between the M3 + half a dozen rolls of film, or my ratty Pentax K3 with a manual focus film lens (which is a pretty decent street shooter setup)
I don't shoot for clinical accuracy and perfect images - I want 1930s style propaganda posters. Both of the above suit my style.
"Why not both ?" is not a choice - because "why not both" quickly escalates into a whole backpack full of "options", and no time to just shoot.
1 Camera, 1 lens, 1 format .... lets go
Nice! All good problems to have! You see what I take and it works great for me.
I’m sure you can still get them repaired/ serviced for a few years to come
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you for the insight! :) Now to sleep on it before I potentially embark on my first Leica journey!
great video as usual Matt, been thinking for a long time now i need a small Leica digital compact and the leica CL looks great for street photography , i have a Leica V-LUX 5 ,its a great camera but its quite chunky to take out with me all the time., so a camera like the CL would suit me......
Thanks Michael! Yes the CL works really well for me as a small setup
Can you please do a review on the new voigtlander 28mm color skopar that was briefly featured in this episode? waiting on a solid review before I make a purchase between an ultron and the skopar!
I'm glad you saw that little teaser! :) Yes i'll review the lens in the coming weeks (they arrived yesterday)(multiple versions)
Still loving my CL. Now thinking to buy used 35mm f1.4 or 23mm f2.0.
Great, me too! (the CL). I love mine with M lenses but the 18mm is the lightest option.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I also always use 35mm cron. The manual lens on CL is a great experience, even though not like a real rangefinder.
And yes I shoot the CL in professional shoots not just travel, editorial and documentary
Currently I’m in France, and walking the CL with 20-60 lumix lens along with 11-23, a super versatile set up.
F2 f2.8 keeps things smaller lighter and the camera’s iso can make up the difference in lower light these days
To this end,, the lighter smaller the camera is its better for me.
Great! Yes I love a small setup too. I have that 20-60 kit lens and yes it's so light (and plastic) it works quite well on the CL for a zoom. I tend to shoot small MF primes but we both enjoy the same small cameras.
I still daily use my TL2 and it’s still one of the sexiest cameras I’ve ever seen.
8:33 It's amazing you could fit so many cameras in one bag especially with a chunk boy like Hasselblad.
That's what I love so much! (I was actually carrying the M4-P too in a side pouch (add-on) :)
Looking for ways to "stretch the dollar" when buying camera gear is always tremendously rewarding and undoubtedly enhances the creative process.
Yes! I love great value/performance kit
Congrats!! Yes I love it with M glass and have little interest in L glass. Enjoy!
Yes just use proper M/LTM lenses, pre-focus once and they stay the say with camera on or off. That’s my approach. I’m not a focus by wire fan.
Sadly I part exchanged my CL against a used SL2 which is stupendous but too heavy to carry as far as the CL, which really is a great travel camera.. I had slightly damaged the CL cosmetically and got a low but fair price for it, and I am missing it badly.
Sorry to hear. The CL prices are coming down so you might even profit from selling and buying again later
Digital CL. Hmmmm.. might be an interesting solution coupling it with 2X converter and Sigma 60-600mm for moon photography.. ;)
Yes! I was using a 90mm on mine last week for the same idea.
Ha cool stories. Never looked into CL before but I would probably get a iiif first one day :)
Thanks Thomas! Now you have the SL, CL next as your backup :P
Pls do a what's in your bag and recommendations to luggage bags and keeping Leicas safe during transit
Hi, I do monthly whats in my bag videos on Patreon. There must be over 24 episodes on there from various trips to suit different needs. Check them out.
Looking forward to the upcoming Voigtlander 28mm f2.8 Color Skopar review
Thanks! I'm happy you spotted that little teaser :)
OK Matt, I love your stuff always.. But the biggest take away from this video is the discovery of John Free. HOLY CRAP!!!!! He's like the Fred Dibnah of photography.
Haha yes he’s cool! (Fred was also very cool!)
I have a CL too, with several
lenses, but somehow I never knew about the ELmarit TL.
So Ebay had a 4 AM auction that had zero bids on a never used lens. I made sure I bid high because I new the "Lurkers"
like me who bid with 15 seconds left had to be considered.
When the auction ended , low and behold there were 4 other biders and I won the lens for $400.
MPB and KEH both have used EX condition for over $600, so I got a bit of a bargain for losing a couple hours sleep.
Great! I’ve done the same in past. Always a good time for a bargain!
I hope Leica makes a updated CL Fuji is doing well with their APSC cameras and the CL with an updated sensor
with IBIS, PD tracking and better high ISO would do real well in L mount. Sigma makes many small contemporary
C lenses for APSc.
@@zenjitsuman hope so!
One of the best kept secrets is that Leica CL!
Yes!!
Audio on headphones is as crunchy and pleasant as walking on broken glass
Thanks for the feedback and sorry it was a bad experience. This is from last year so the newer videos probably sound different. (I did have some videos with worse than normal audio after moving to a small apartment).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt, I watched a few of the newer ones too. The style is the same, but the clipping is much less. Also, great content, this should always trump delivery. Thanks for creating.
The Ricoh GR iii might suit more people, methinks.
I had both of them and the CL has so much nicer rendering and colors
Thanks, I prefer "real" lenses, that's why I tend not to use P&S cameras (BUT I know many love the GR cameras) (The GR is too close to iPhone photography for me I think.. too easy!)
Thanks for confirming! I know many like the GR cameras
😊
Thanks!
...ohhhh Matty...what no gravy @5:40,you mean to say you didnt take one for da boyz🤣😂..gr8 vlog sounds like you had a gr8 time, but 45 degrees, nope not for me.What was the carry you were using around town out of interest..?
Haha, I didn't miss anything, trust me lol! :) Yes it was too warm but showed what the city offers. The bags I use are linked below the video. I've done a video on them before but i'll likely do another as I have a new addition to the "system" that I use. They're great!
haha atta boy love ur work@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
I said cl....😁
Congrats! Well spotted :)
I got married twice in Vegas
Haha :)
Hi NO the SL2-S or M 10 or M11 would have been better, that is just me.
M10/M11 with a small lens - yes (esp. the black M11) SL2-S is awesome but not as my daily carry
Good common sense.
Thanks!
“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” 😁
Haha, this was the exception!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Well worth the watch.
i debate selling my x100t and my nikon D300 to get a CL all the time
I can't recommend what is best for you but yes I would happily use the CL of these 3 cameras.
The Leica CL is the only real #LeicaEDC
Yes for a true compact, add the 18mm!
What happened to: what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas? 😂
Haha I only explained the photography side :P
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 😁

At times he sounds like a man possessed by the devil.
Haha oh dear.. I'm not sure why it sounds different to normal
It really is almost unlistenable. This is the second video that has had *very* strange audio. Good subject, but...
@@timaswan thanks and sorry the audio is bad for you. Others said they liked it more now I’m back on the Blue Yeti podcast mic. I’ll keep trying to adjust things
